More Than Early Diagnosis for Alzheimer’s

Georgia Memory Net is known for helping Georgians living with memory challenges or cognitive decline get an accelerated, accurate diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. We also help the families of Georgians living with Alzheimer’s with connections to local support and educational resources that can improve their lives.

One such resource is our Embracing Improvisation video series, which shows how the skills of improv theatre can help care partners better validate their person living with dementia.

The first step to support is diagnosis. If you’ve noticed signs of memory loss or cognitive decline, don’t wait. Make an appointment with your Primary Care Provider and tell them about your symptoms. They may refer you to Georgia Memory Net for diagnosis. Visit GaMemoryNet.org/referrals to learn more.

Dear Friend,

A Word from President & CEO Bert

It’s been a busy springtime for GPB. We were honored recently to host the producers of Antiques Roadshow for a filming in Savannah, and the best part was getting the chance to meet so many of you there! I always encourage GPB staff to participate in as many of these events as possible because there’s nothing more affirming than meeting you and hearing exactly what GPB means to you. In fact, GPB means so much to so many, and we’re honored to steward this wonderful resource for you! So, be sure to tune in next year for the three episodes of Antiques Roadshow produced in Savannah! In the meantime, we’ll have lots more wonderful programming for you to engage with on all our platforms between now and then.

If you’ve been staying up on the news, it’s no secret to you that public media has been in the headlines quite a bit. While this isn’t the first threat to our federal funding, it’s likely the most significant in the history of our industry. That’s why it’s so important, if GPB is a valuable part of your life, that you do your part to help sustain it. Protect My Public Media is a national effort bringing together all public media stations in advocacy for the work we do. It offers information and opportunities to contact the decision-makers where you live. I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to visit protectmypublicmedia.org and sign up. In a few short clicks, you’ll be able to send a letter to all your elected representatives in DC sharing how much you value GPB. As of the writing of this letter there have already been more than 1 million emails sent to Congress just over the last couple of weeks. It is in times like this that your words are so much more powerful than our own. So, please help us stand up for the vital work GPB does, not only on TV and radio, but in providing unique educational resources and opportunities to Georgia’s children, lifesaving public safety messaging and community connections that can’t be replicated anywhere else.

We want to be here for all of Georgia. You can certainly help us continue the powerful tradition of public media in keeping you informed, safe and educated. Thank you for your continued support for GPB and know that we’ll continue to do all we can to be here for you every day.

Warmest regards,

This summer, we’re taking a trip back in time to the prehistoric era. After 25 years, the hit series Walking with Dinosaurs adds a new chapter to the stories of long-lost giants as the BBC partners with PBS to reveal recently unearthed fossils. With cutting-edge technology, experts can share how they lived, hunted, fought and died more accurately than ever before, their tales brought to life by state-of-theart visual effects.

Located just over an hour away from GPB’s Atlanta headquarters in Cartersville, the museum provides a look into the fossils found across the Southeastern United States and across the world, and curator Ryan Roney is its most passionate expert and advocate. I visited Tellus and spoke with him in April about the casts on display and how they relate to Walking with Dinosaurs, why there aren’t many dinosaur fossils found in Georgia and much more.

“It’s that sedimentary regime where you’re at,” Ryan explained as we walked through the fossil exhibit, familiar friends like the Edmontosaurus and Triceratops on display (you’ll meet them in the show!). I asked why dinosaurs weren’t found in Georgia and instead, some of the bones the casts on display were made of came from Alabama instead. “We talk about the fall line, but the fall line actually sits about 20 miles south of where the ancient coastline was. So those sediments that you’re in won’t have had the whole animal as it comes down the stream. There is Cretaceous material almost all the way to Macon, but none of that outside of Stewart and Chattahoochee County have any fossils in them. The other ones are just sediments.”

For more from my interview with Tellus Curator Ryan Roney, please visit our MyGPB blog at gpb.org/digital/mygpb For our series of digital and social videos covering fossils across Georgia and beyond, please visit our YouTube page through this code.

Walking with Dinosaurs premieres June 16 at 8 p.m. and will air June 16, 17 and 18 for 6 episodes. The show will be available to stream on the PBS App and GPB Passport.

Our Podcast Catalog Is Growing!

GPB is proud to introduce two new podcasts this year, focusing on past and present news stories that have captured the attention of Georgians across the state.

Available now: Manufacturing Danger: The BioLab Story

When a chemical fire broke out at the BioLab facility in Conyers, Georgia in 2024, a plume of smoke blanketed the area, triggering evacuations and urgent warnings to stay indoors. But for many residents, this wasn’t just an isolated emergency—it was part of a larger pattern of industrial incidents that raised serious concerns about safety and oversight.

In Manufacturing Danger: The BioLab Story, Pamela Kirkland investigates what led to the fire, how officials and the company responded, and the lingering questions about its impact on the community. Through firsthand accounts, expert analysis and newly uncovered details, this series explores the broader implications of chemical safety, regulation, and corporate responsibility—while giving voice to those living with the consequences.

Coming soon: Robbery, Inc., in partnership with the Marietta Daily Journal

In April 1974, a group of thieves tunneled beneath Roswell Street in Marietta, Georgia and blasted their way into the Cobb Exchange Bank vault— only to be mocked for escaping with just $1,000. But as investigators dug deeper, they uncovered a far bigger mystery and the story of a career bank robber whose daring heists and prison escapes made him a legend.

Find both podcasts at gpb.org/podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Check Out GPB’s Summer Learning Resources

Did you know that more than half of students in grades 1 through 6 will lose 39% of their school year gains during summer break? That’s a lot of lessons learned that are lost during that time! But GPB is here for parents and caregivers to help their students continue the fun learning process with ideas you can implement at home or on vacation, from conversation starters to hands-on activities. Print out our guides (available in English and Spanish) to keep at home and to go wherever your summer break takes you: every destination is a learning opportunity!

In addition, GPB’s “Getting Ready” video lessons serve as a resource for parents and caregivers to understand what their student needs to know before entering Pre-K through 5th grade, from classroom tours to important milestones for students to achieve during each school year. All guides are created by Georgia teachers with guidelines from the Georgia Department of Education’s Georgia Early Learning and Development Standards so students can learn at their own pace and teachers will be able to meet students where they are when they reach a new grade level.

Summer days may seem long, but the new school year will be here before you know it and it’s best to be prepared. Find out more about tips and strategies for getting ready for the new school year on our website.

Donor Spotlight

Wilma Harrington

This month, we’re talking with Leadership Circle donor Wilma Harrington, who says she first donated to GPB in 1989.

Why is GPB important to you?

GPB is important to me because I get balanced programming in terms of news and information. I appreciate getting both sides of an issue. I’ve been a public broadcasting fan since the 1970s. It provides education and information. I think it’s important to provide a platform that’s unbiased.

Do you remember when you first donated to GPB and why?

I first donated in 1989. I think I became a $10 Sustainer. I had been listening to WUGA (Athens) and watching the television programs. That was the first time I paid attention to the pledge drive. The thank you gift that year was a T-shirt with the Morning Edition crew. I realized how important public media was to me and that I could afford to give.

How has GPB’s programming improved your life?

One of the biggest things I get from GPB is learning about Georgia. My favorite program is Georgia Outdoors. I learn so much about the state. It helped me learn about Little St. Simons and Georgia’s Barrier Islands, and I now go there regularly. MASTERPIECE and the other programs are also great for edification. I appreciate being able to watch shows on my own schedule. One of the greatest perks of supporting GPB is access to GPB Passport.

Why do you think it’s important to support the mission of GPB and what sense of satisfaction do you have as a donor knowing you’re contributing to our work?

I think it’s important to support public media because of the unbiased information and quality programming it provides. It makes me feel good. I’m pleased that I’m at a time in my life where I can donate at the level that I do. I feel like I’m helping make a difference.

Caregiving Stresses the Need for Security and Support for Caregivers

“There are only four kinds of people in the world: Those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need a caregiver.”

The long-term care system in the United States is in crisis: more than 105.6 million people are caregivers, and with a million unpaid family caregivers providing 34 billion hours of care annually, they are missing out on an estimated $67 billion in personal lost earnings. As caregiving in America faces the pressures of an aging baby boomer generation and a rising life expectancy, a new film hopes to amplify their message and provide caregivers the security and support they provide for others.

From Executive Producer Bradley Cooper, Caregiving highlights this urgent issue through caregiver stories and interviews with experts, sharing the experiences of paid and unpaid caregivers navigating the challenging yet immensely meaningful work. From spouses feeling alone in their care for their partner, to home health aides providing care with the same kindness as a family member to parents and children caring for their family members in a world not built for people with disabilities, the documentary is a harrowing, captivating look into the reality many Americans face, and if they haven’t yet, they likely will.

Yet despite the dire state many of the film’s subjects find themselves in, love and hope prevail. In Conyers, Georgia where Malcoma Brown-Ekeogu devotes herself to her husband’s care, she shares that “The journey’s been tough, but I’ve fallen even more in love with him. Even though he was disappearing, our love was growing.”

Narrated by Uzo Aduba and directed by Chris Durrance, Caregiving premieres June 24 at 9 p.m. GPB will explore caregiving in Georgia with special news features throughout the month. In addition, we will offer a website with caregiver resources and an upcoming film screening with the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers.
