FROM AFRICA TO THE WORLD SEPT. 18, 2024 - FEB. 23, 2025
Dear Friends,
I hope you have had a productive and relaxing summer wherever you are across the state (or beyond). As we move into the autumn months, we here at GPB are making wonderful progress on our strategic planning efforts. At the time I’m writing this letter, we have landed on our new mission, vision and values statements. Our leadership is putting the final touches on our goals for the next five years, and we’ll be very excited to share all of that with you come January.
When I became CEO a year ago, I had ten years of experience working at GPB. I thought I knew the organization inside and out! But there is nothing like moving into a role like this to teach you just what you don’t know! It’s actually been a wonderfully exciting experience getting to know this company from a new vantage point. In my previous role, it was always my responsibility to assist in ensuring the company’s success through fundraising and awareness. Now, my job is to provide security and longevity, not only for the company in the communities we serve, but also for the many people working within the operation who give so much of their lives in service to you! GPB is so much more than anyone thinks, and I hope over the last year I’ve done my part in helping you understand that. As we move forward in our new strategic plan from 2025 to 2030, the ultimate goal is to teach everyone GPB serves just how vital of a resource it is for all of us!
As you thumb through this issue of Next, I hope you’ll take just a moment to reflect on the diversity of content you can find here and know that we’re always doing our part to bring you more! As always, I leave you with my most sincere thanks for your gifts of support that help GPB be all it can be!
Warmly,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO

BIGCATS24/7 Reveals the Challenge of Survival for Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs in Africa.
Premieres Wednesday, September 18 at 8 PM
Tune in beginning Wednesday, September 18 at 8 p.m. as the new thrilling six-part nonfiction series, BIG CATS 24/7 transports viewers to Botswana’s wild Okavango Delta, one of the most dynamic locations on the African continent. Produced in partnership with BBC & BBC Studios Natural History Unit, the series uses the latest filming technology to follow lions, leopards and cheetahs day and night, revealing the lives of big cats like never before.
This raw and unfiltered observational wildlife series shows their fight to survive in an increasingly challenging world. From unprecedented wildfire to floods and extreme drought, the African cats and the BIG CATS 24/7 camera crew are tested to their limits. With extraordinary, unparalleled access, filming from the ground, the air and through the night in an area unvisited by tourists, the BIG CATS 24/7 team works together to follow the cats’ lives around the clock while forming unique bonds along the way.
“…Expect the unexpected and to witness things you’ve never seen before in an African wilderness that’s almost as dynamic as the cats.”
- Roger Webb, Executive Producer BBC Studios Natural History Unit

“Not only is BIG CATS 24/7 educational but it is visually and emotionally captivating,” Roger Webb, Executive Producer BBC Studios Natural History Unit said. “Being able to go deeper into the lives of Africa’s big cats than ever before is a mouth-watering prospect. Expect the unexpected and to witness things you’ve never seen before in an African wilderness that’s almost as dynamic as the cats. It’s sure to be a rollercoaster of drama and emotion and it’s why we’re so excited to be making BIG CATS 24/7.”

Georgia Public Broadcasting and Fred Rogers
Productions Host Explore Your City with Alma’s Way Community Event
Attendees pick up educational materials for Alma’s Way.
On Saturday, July 13, GPB hosted Explore your City with Alma’s Way in collaboration with MARTA and Fred Rogers Productions at the MARTA Arts Center Station in Midtown Atlanta.
The event was inspired by one of PBS Kids’ newest shows Alma’s Way, an animated series from Fred Rogers Productions, the producers of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Created by actor and author Sonia Manzano, who positively impacted the lives of generations as “Maria” on Sesame Street, Alma’s Way was inspired by Manzano’s own childhood. The title character, Alma, is a young Puerto Rican girl who lives in the Bronx with her family among a diverse group of friends and community members and is always curious about the world around her.
Participants talked with event partners including the Fulton County Library and enjoyed various activities.
The event featured organizations such as MODA, Midtown Alliance, Fulton County Library, and the Atlanta Regional Commission. There was music and dancing with the FyreNation Crew, and MARTA train conductors who talked about working on trains and buses. Families also participated in a book swap, group mural drawing, bubble-making, and chalk drawing.
We always enjoy bringing PBS Kids shows to life in our communities. Daniel Tiger will be visiting Atlanta this fall! Save the date and stay tuned for details on the next Be My Neighbor Day on Sunday, October 27!

Congratulations to the Winners of the PBS KIDS Writers Contest
GPB is thrilled to extend heartfelt congratulations to the winners of our 2024 PBS KIDS Writers Contest launched in January of this year. The annual contest is open to Georgia students in kindergarten through third grade. Story submissions can be fact or fiction, poetry or prose, and each year they are judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations. For each grade level, there is a first, second, and third place winner.
On Saturday, June 29, we welcomed the winners and their families to an awards ceremony at GPB’s Atlanta headquarters. The event buzzed with excitement as kids experimented with fun STEAM activities, recorded their stories in our radio recording studios and cheered for each other’s successes!

THANK YOU TO THE HARPER FAMILY FOR THEIR GENEROUS DONATION THROUGH THE CARS PROGRAM
There are many ways to support GPB, and one of them is the CARS vehicle donation program that encourages individuals to donate a used car or vehicle that they no longer need. GPB Donor Mark Harper and his family decided recently that their beloved Toyota Sienna was no longer serving them and would be better utilized by supporting an organization that they love. “Just like the car, GPB has been woven into our daily life for many years,” said Harper. “We brought our twins home from the hospital in this car. They’re teenagers now, but have grown up watching GPB.”
The beloved Toyota Sienna that has traveled thousands of miles over the years transporting children to daycare, family sporting events, school, playdates and concerts, will now come back to the Harper family in the form of the GPB programming they enjoy, including All Creatures Great and Small and Endeavour.
