Accelerated, Accurate Diagnosis
For Alzheimer’s & Related Dementias
How to get a referral to Georgia Memory Net
Many Georgians say they’ve noticed problems with their memory. But only a minority of them have received a diagnosis for their symptoms, meaning they and their families don’t have access to appropriate treatment and support.
For Georgians experiencing memory loss or cognitive decline, a referral to Georgia Memory Net could be a good next step. GMN provides accurate and accelerated diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias at Memory Assessment Clinics around our state, and via telemedicine.
The first step is to have a conversation with your Primary Care Provider to ask if a referral to GMN is right for you. Visit GaMemoryNet.org/referrals to learn more about getting a referral to a GMN Memory Assessment.

Dear Friends,
As I write this note, I’m a little over a week from finding out that I have been chosen as the next CEO of Georgia Public Broadcasting. When I came to GPB 10 years ago, I had no clue how special this place would become to me. Certainly, I knew of GPB’s value to Georgia having grown up on it, but what I saw on television and heard on radio was only the tip of the iceberg as I would soon see for myself. The last decade has been a joyous journey of discovery, and I’m still learning new ways every day that GPB can be an even greater asset to those who use it. And while I’m honored and feel a great deal of personal pride, this isn’t about me. This is about carving out a strong and successful future for this beloved company.
My vision for GPB is one that fully embraces our roots as an educational service. I believe that we can use the valuable programming we bring to you from PBS and NPR combined with our own local content to enlighten and engage communities across the state. We are uniquely poised to do this because we can do so with no commercial interest. Instead, every dollar we’re given will be used for you. I’m excited to see what we can do together.
And I’m excited to have you along for the ride as well. Remember, this is YOUR company. The work we do is to enrich your life as well as the lives of your family and loved ones. The dollars that you give are the foundation for everything we will do going forward. So, please remember GPB as you make your charitable giving plans. Now may even be a good time to assess what you’re giving and add a few dollars in to help us take these new steps forward. As we move forward in my first year as CEO, I’ll share more with you about plans and accomplishments for the company you are generously supporting.
What’s most exciting in this new phase of my time at GPB is that our relationship won’t change at all. You’ll still see me on television, hear me on radio and read my thoughts monthly in this publication. I want to be as close as possible to the act of sharing GPB’s vital mission with the communities that we serve. That includes you!
And now, let the adventure continue!
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO

AMERICA OUTDOORS with BARATUNDE THURSTON
Season Two Premieres with an Adventure in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp

Wednesdays at 8 PM Beginning September 6
AMERICA OUTDOORS with BARATUNDE THURSTON returns with its second season, as the host, a best-selling writer, podcaster and comedian, travels across the US to uncover more amazing stories about how we work, play and interact with the outdoors.

In a country as diverse as America, Baratunde is on a mission to see how culture, history and the land itself are shaping what we do when we step away from the comforts of home to embrace an outdoor way of life.
Season two highlights even more regions and environments, finding unique expressions of our outdoor culture in Utah, Maine, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oregon and the Suwannee River in Georgia and Florida.
The season premiere episode, “Suwannee: Wild River,” explores one of the wild rivers in America. Its watershed creates woods and wetlands, marshes and cave systems. From its headwaters in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp, where he meets a Baptist minister who holds services there, Baratunde takes a journey on the Suwannee and learns how this unique environment inspires a whole range of passions.
“I love getting to experience this country through the lives of people deeply connected to nature,” said Baratunde. “I’ve witnessed healing, transformation and plain old fun. This second season has more America and more outdoors!”
Season two episodes will also explore the growing evidence that links people’s overall wellness with being outside and new ways of making the outdoors accessible to everyone. The series will continue to showcase how Americans seek out the outdoors in the most unlikely of places, even as our changing climate grows more extreme.
Tune in Wednesday, September 6 at 8 p.m. as AMERICA OUTDOORS with BARATUNDE THURSTON premieres a new season.

“I love getting to experience this country through the lives of people deeply connected to nature.”

The Moth Radio Hour’s Meg Bowles Talks About the Experience of Storytelling

Get Your Tickets for The Moth Mainstage in Atlanta Coming November 30
Meg Bowles is the kind of person you want to sit next to at a dinner party. As a senior director and co-host of the Peabody Award winning The Moth Radio Hour and director of The Moth Mainstage, there’s no doubt she could keep a good conversation flowing with stories.
From her experience of casting storytellers for The Moth Mainstage, including a NASA astronaut who commanded the first shuttle mission after the loss of Challenger, to a doctor who saved Mother Theresa’s life, Meg has helped create a special connection between storytellers and audience members since volunteering in the late ‘90s to help The Moth founder George Dawes Green set up events in New York.
“I’m always so amazed after 20-odd years to walk into a theater where the only thing on stage is a microphone, and it’s full of people whose only expectation is to hear a story,” said Meg. “That’s moving to me, and it makes me love my job.”
As Meg relates, George had previously lived on St. Simons Island, and he would often sit on the front porch with his friends telling stories.
“When he moved to New York, he missed that, so he wanted to bring this Southern tradition of telling stories and listening to each other there,” said Meg. “The idea for the title came from the moths he used to see flying around the porch light back on St. Simons Island.”
On November 30, The Moth Mainstage is coming to Atlanta, and audience members will get the chance to experience the unique connection with the featured storytellers that Meg has helped foster.
“I think the beauty of The Moth Mainstage is that you get to hear from someone that you would never get to meet.”
-Meg Bowles
“I always tell storytellers I work with that it’s not a performance,” said Meg. “It’s sharing. You want a person to forget that they are sitting with 900 or a thousand other people. You want them to feel like you’re talking just to them. When someone performs, everybody critiques them, but when somebody shares, you lean in and cheer them on.”
Over the years, Meg says she believes people have come to trust The Moth to deliver good stories and attending one of The Moth Mainstage events can introduce audiences to new perspectives.

“I think the beauty of The Moth Mainstage is that you get to hear from someone that you would never get to meet,” said Meg. “Suddenly there’s an understanding for someone’s life choices or situation that you didn’t think about before, and there’s a shift in your opinion.”

For information on how to get tickets for The Moth Mainstage at Atlanta’s Center Stage Theater on Thursday, November 30, visit gpb.org/moth.
Tune in for The Moth Radio Hour Saturdays at 5 a.m. and Sundays at 11 a.m. on GPB Atlanta 88.5. You can also listen to the program at these times and Fridays at 7 p.m. on GPB’s statewide radio network.

GPB IN THE COMMUNITY
GPB Partners with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month – a time to address this stigmatized and often taboo topic. As a public health issue and eleventh leading cause of death in the United States, according to statistics released by the CDC earlier this year, suicide can be prevented through more investment in educating people about the issue and its warning signs, research and mental health advocacy.
GPB will air a series of interstitial spots across our nine-station television network this month which highlight mental health issues and suicide risks. The spots are made possible by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts as part of the community engagement initiative around the PBS documentary Facing Suicide. Each spot will direct viewers to call 9-8-8 to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. As Georgia’s behavioral health authority, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) responds to 9-8-8 calls and coordinates services and support for Georgians who seek help through the line.
GPB is proud to work with DBHDD as a community partner to raise awareness of the resources available to Georgians through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
To watch the documentary Facing Suicide and find more information on a range of mental health topics, visit the GPB Mental Health and Wellness site at gpb.org/mental-health where you’ll find news stories, additional video content and resources for adults and children.
If you or someone you know is dealing with self-harm or suicidal thoughts, please call 9-8-8.

Time For A Diagnosis For Memory Issues?
Three Answers From Kyle Brunen, Georgia Memory Net Project Director
Though hundreds of thousands of Georgians say they’ve noticed signs of memory loss or cognitive impairment, the majority haven’t received a diagnosis for those symptoms.
We asked Georgia Memory Net’s Kyle Brunen three questions about how, and why, to get a referral for diagnosis.

In the past, it could take Georgians over a year to get an appointment for Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Has that changed?
The landscape is changing but there’s still a lack of cognitive neurologists to help patients with cognitive decline and memory loss. Worse still, the majority of these providers are typically clustered in large cities, which creates access barriers for rural areas. Since 2018, we have been building the Georgia Memory Net (GMN) to meet this need for early diagnosis and treatment. With funding and support from the state, we have established seven GMN Memory Assessment Clinics throughout Georgia, oftentimes reducing wait times from months or years to days or weeks.
How do Georgians get a referral to Georgia Memory Net for accelerated and accurate diagnosis?
If you or a family member are struggling with symptoms of memory loss, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider (PCP). If your provider decides that a more comprehensive assessment is needed, they can refer a patient to GMN with a simple form.
1 2 3
What are the benefits of diagnosis?
An early and accurate diagnosis is crucial. Identifying the specific type of cognitive impairment can lead to more appropriate and customized care. New therapies are here to help slow the progression of cognitive decline, but they are only effective for some patients who are identified early in the stage of disease progression.

Jon Nelson and Hannah Goodin Bring Fans the Best of High School Football with the Football Fridays in Georgia Podcast and More

GPB’s weekly live television airing and stream of Football Fridays in Georgia kicks off September 1, but GPB Sports’ Jon Nelson and Hannah Goodin haven’t been sitting on the sidelines waiting for the games to begin.
As an integral part of the GPB Sports team, Jon and Hannah have worked together for seven years, and they serve as co-hosts of the companion Football Fridays in Georgia podcast.

“What I always say is that we share the state with the state.”
-Jon Nelson
GPB Next caught up with them a few weeks prior to the official start of the high school football season in mid-August as they recorded a preseason preview all-star edition of Football Fridays in Georgia featuring high school football reporters from across the state.
“We’re getting high school football fans caught up,” said Jon. “Everybody is all optimistic as 400-plus schools get ready for the 2023 season.”
Both Hannah and Jon are also excited about the interviews they’ve conducted with high school football coaches from across the state.
“We call it ‘Zoomapalooza’,” said Hannah. “We spoke with 36 coaches on Zoom from South, Central and North Georgia. Jon also went to multiple media days to interview the Atlanta coaches and players.”
One of the most important aspects of high school athletics that Jon and Hannah say they always discuss with coaches is the sense of community that it helps to build.
“What I always say is that we share the state with the state,” said Jon. “The more that we think we’re not alike, the more that these interviews remind everybody that we are. It’s exciting for GPB Sports to be a conduit of that information.”
Hannah agrees that she loves sharing stories about the positive impact of high school sports. “Players are getting opportunities to work in their communities because of the football program. You’ll get chill bumps when you hear what high school football means to these small towns.”
New episodes of the Football Fridays in Georgia podcast are available each Wednesday. To listen in with Jon and Hannah and get more sports coverage, including blogs, schedules and the stream of the Football Fridays in Georgia game of the week each Friday at 7:30 p.m. beginning September 1, visit gpb.org/sports
