gpb next magazine Dear Friends, It’s been a busy summer at GPB, and as the fall season approaches, we’re excited to talk about new programs and initiatives that we believe you’ll find valuable.

This month’s cover story features an overview of the threepart film The U.S. and the Holocaust from Ken Burns, who is known for directing and producing some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made.

Inspired in part by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s “Americans and the Holocaust” exhibition and supported by its historical resources, The U.S. and the Holocaust airs Sunday, September 18 – Tuesday, September 20.

From this historical journey, we turn to a geographical one as season two of Rivers of Life, which premieres Wednesday, September 28, examines the wildlife, people and scenery of three of Earth’s great rivers; the Zambezi, the Danube and the Yukon.

We’re also proud to spotlight the accomplishments of young athletes and schools around the state through Football Fridays in Georgia. High school football is truly something that brings communities together, and encouraging community and engaging our audiences in important issues through our content is the cornerstone of GPB’s mission.

You can read more about how we’re accomplishing this through the GPB Education article on enhancements to our Georgia Studies digital course and the GPB Community Engagement feature on our work to provide mental health resources through partnerships with organizations including NAMI Georgia.

It’s also our goal to bring you a sense of hope through gaining a greater understanding of the world around us, so I’ll end on a note about our new weekly feature Salvation South. You can read how creator and host Chuck Reece was inspired by hope and healing in the GPB Radio section.

Courtesy: Library of Congress The film tackles a range of questions that remain essential to our society today, including how racism influences policies related to immigration and refugees as well as how governments and people respond to the rise of authoritarian states that manipulate history and facts to consolidate power.

“History cannot be looked at in isolation,” said Ken Burns. “While we rightly celebrate American ideals of democracy and our history as a nation of immigrants, we must also grapple with the fact that American institutions and policies, like segregation and the brutal treatment of indigenous populations, were influential in Hitler’s Germany.

And it cannot be denied that, although we accepted more refugees than any other sovereign nation, America could have done so much more to help the millions of desperate people fleeing Nazi persecution.”

The film also looks at American policy on topics ranging from Calvin Coolidge’s staunch anti-immigration ideology to FDR’s Lend-Lease bill and how these fights took shape on the home front, including the emergence of Nazi sympathizers.

Similarly, new light is shed on many of the well-known controversies surrounding the American response to the Holocaust, including the dreadful story of the more than 900 Jewish refugees aboard the MS St. Louis, who were denied entry to Cuba and the U.S. in 1939 and the enduring debate over whether the Allies should have bombed Auschwitz.

he Georgia Studies digital course is a free resource aligned to the Georgia standards for 8th grade social studies. It contains 10 units of study along with support materials.

Now a recent upgrade to the course gives students a more accessible, engaging design with enhanced graphics and interactives. Educators can now link to students directly to specific pages and elements, favorite content and share to Google Classroom.

huck Reece, the founding editorin-chief of The Bitter Southerner, has launched the online magazine

Salvation South, and as part of his new venture, he’s commenting on Southern culture and values in a weekly GPB Radio segment.

As Reece explained in a blog for GPB about the new publication, Salvation South is “inspired by hope, healing and — most importantly — the desire to create a place on the web and a community of people where civil conversation can happen. We celebrate the culture of the South and discuss issues of importance to our region.”

M

ental health has been an ongoing focus of GPB’s community engagement work over the past several years, and we continue to bring information and programming around this topic to communities statewide. This month,

we’re highlighting National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Suicide rates across the U.S. and in Georgia have risen over the past decade.

Suicide is currently the tenth leading cause of death in Georgia and the second for those aged 10-24.*

GPB is pleased to partner with NAMI Georgia this month and next to present workshops for young people and the adults that care for them to raise awareness around suicide prevention. The mission of NAMI Georgia is to empower affiliates to create communities where all affected by mental illnesses find hope, help, and acceptance through support, education and advocacy.
