This month’s cover story features an overview of the threepart film The U.S. and the Holocaust from Ken Burns, who is known for directing and producing some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Inspired in part by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s “Americans and the Holocaust” exhibition and supported by its historical resources, The U.S. and the Holocaust airs Sunday, September 18 – Tuesday, September 20. From this historical journey, we turn to a geographical one as season two of Rivers of Life, which premieres Wednesday, September 28, examines the wildlife, people and scenery of three of Earth’s great rivers; the Zambezi, the Danube and the Yukon.
We’re also proud to spotlight the accomplishments of young athletes and schools around the state through Football Fridays in Georgia. High school football is truly something that brings communities together, and encouraging community and engaging our audiences in important issues through our content is the cornerstone of GPB’s mission. You can read more about how we’re accomplishing this through the GPB Education article on enhancements to our Georgia Studies digital course and the GPB Community Engagement feature on our work to provide mental health resources through partnerships with organizations including NAMI Georgia.

My husband Peter and I were happy to finally make the decision to let go of motorcycles we no longer use to support one of our favorite organizations – GPB! We are from upstate New York originally, and we have supported public television and radio throughout several states since the 1990’s. We have always appreciated the level of intelligence and kindness that public broadcasting provides in such a chaotic world. For years my husband ignored the drama programming, and then I got him hooked on Cadfael, Endeavour, Grantchester and As Time Goes By. Now he realizes how poor American broadcasting choices are compared to British on GPB! Don’t even get me started on Poldark and Downton Abbey! saying...donorsourare

Holocaust Memorial Museum’s “Americans and the Holocaust” exhibition and supported by its historical resources, the film examines the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany in the context of global antisemitism and racism, the eugenics movement in the United States and race laws in the American South. Combining the first-person accounts of Holocaust witnesses and survivors and interviews with leading historians and writers, THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST dispels competing myths that Americans either were ignorant of the unspeakable persecution that Jews and other targeted minorities faced in Europe or that they looked on with callous indifference.

“History cannot be looked at in isolation,” said Ken Burns. “While we rightly celebrate American ideals of democracy and our history as a nation of immigrants, we must also grapple with the fact that American institutions and policies, like segregation and the brutal treatment of indigenous populations, were influential in Hitler’s Germany. And it cannot be denied that, although we accepted more refugees than any other sovereign nation, America could have done so much more to help the millions of desperate people fleeing Nazi persecution.”
“While we rightly celebrate American ideals of democracy and our history as a nation of immigrants, we must also grapple with the fact that American institutions and policies, like segregation and the brutal treatment of indigenous populations, were influential in Hitler’s Germany.” – Ken Burns
The film tackles a range of questions that remain essential to our society today, including how racism influences policies related to immigration and refugees as well as how governments and people respond to the rise of authoritarian states that manipulate history and facts to consolidate power.
The U.S. and the Holocaust Screening Events 7gpb.org
The film also looks at American policy on topics ranging from Calvin Coolidge’s staunch anti-immigration ideology to FDR’s Lend-Lease bill and how these fights took shape on the home front, including the emergence of Nazi sympathizers. Similarly, new light is shed on many of the well-known controversies surrounding the American response to the Holocaust, including the dreadful story of the more than 900 Jewish refugees aboard the MS St. Louis, who were denied entry to Cuba and the U.S. in 1939 and the enduring debate over whether the Allies should have bombed Auschwitz. Join us for screening events in Atlanta on September 28 and Savannah on November 16 to learn more about what was happening in the U.S. during this time and how Georgians were responding to the antisemitism of the Nazi regime.
