A Word from President & CEO Bert Wesley Huffman

Dear Friend, It’s been a long, hot summer, and I’m sure that like me, you’re ready for the cooler temperatures and natural beauty the fall season in Georgia brings to us. And, whether you’re preparing for fall activities or getting an early start making your holiday plans, I hope that GPB continues to be a trusted source of information and enjoyment for you throughout the rest of the year. One of our most popular initiatives, Be My Neighbor Day, is back this month. There’s nothing more heartwarming than seeing the smiles on children’s faces as they meet the beloved PBS KIDS character Daniel Tiger and learn about acts of kindness and what it means to be a good neighbor. It’s an honor for GPB to stage this annual free event in partnership with our friends at CompassionCon and provide a safe space for children and their caregivers to learn and grow. To find out how you can attend this year’s event, visit gpb.org/community. As you’ll read in our cover story, this month also marks the premiere of Sesame Street and the Great Elephant Adventure. Ever since seeing the preview at this year’s PBS conference with a surprise appearance from Elmo, I’ve been excited to share the program with all of you through the broadcast and community engagement events we’re hosting around it, including our special day with Zoo Atlanta highlighted in the article. If you’re looking to host your own fall gathering of friends and family, GPB is providing free discussion kits for screening Marked!, our 12-part series capturing the people and places integral to Georgia’s role in the American Revolution. You can request your kit at gpb.org/marked. Finally, in advance of the 2026 midterm election on November 3, GPB has produced a voter guide that explains where candidates stand on a variety of issues. You can find the voter guide and GPB’s latest election coverage at gpb.org/elections. We’re always looking for unique ways to serve Georgians, as I hope these programs and initiatives demonstrate. We have more exciting things in store, so take in a breath of fresh fall air, and know that as a valued GPB donor, you are truly a part of helping us Unite & Uplift Georgia. Warmly,

Bert Wesley Huffman

Elmo Goes Wild: Inside Sesame Street and the Great Elephant Adventure by Rachel Buchman

F

or Elmo, a safari is about much more than spotting lions, giraffes and elephants in the wild. It’s a journey.

That’s what Ms. Naserian, a new friend Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Nina meet during their first-ever safari adventure to Kenya, explains to them. “Safari” is the Swahili word for journey, an especially fitting lesson for an adventure that takes the Sesame Street friends from the comforting familiarity of an elephant sanctuary into the wild and, for Elmo, into some big feelings about friendship and saying goodbye. Premiering Oct. 14, Sesame Street and the Great Elephant Adventure brings together Sesame Workshop and NATURE for a special episode filled with discovery, friendship and an important message about protecting wildlife. The adventure begins with an online elephant adoption. Eager to meet their new friend, Elmo, Abby and Nina travel to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, where they meet a young elephant and the keepers who care for her. Their journey continues into the African bush, where they encounter animals they and their Sesame Street friends love, including lions, hippos and giraffes. But the journey isn’t only about what Elmo discovers in the wild. It’s also about what happens when the adventure comes to an end.

“Through Elmo and Abby’s adventure, we hope families will be inspired to explore together and to discover why protecting wildlife is so important.” - Fred Kaufman, Executive Producer for NATURE

As Elmo prepares to leave his new elephant friend behind, he struggles with feelings of separation. For PBS’ youngest viewers, the story offers an approachable way to talk about a feeling that can be difficult to understand: loving someone and still having to say goodbye. For adults, the episode offers a window into the lifesaving work of organizations such as the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The episode also introduces young viewers to some of the reasons elephants need protection. Staff at the wildlife trust explain, in age-appropriate terms, how habitat loss, hunting and other threats can put vulnerable animal populations at risk. A family poses with Elmo at the Zoo Atlanta event.

Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Nina (Suki Lopez) on a wildlife safari led by guide Ms. Naserian (Silayio Kirisuah).

“Collaborating with Sesame Workshop on this special NATURE episode is an incredible opportunity to introduce young audiences to the wonder of the natural world,” said Fred Kaufman, executive producer for NATURE. “Through Elmo and Abby’s adventure, we hope families will be inspired to explore together and to discover why protecting wildlife is so important.” That message extends beyond Kenya. In Georgia, GPB is working with local organizations to connect families with conservation and education efforts close to home. On Aug. 29, GPB hosted an event at Zoo Atlanta, where families could meet Elmo, learn more about the episode and discover more about the elephants and other animals in the zoo’s care. At the heart of the special is a simple lesson: Sometimes the best way to care for a friend is to let them thrive where they belong.

Sesame Street and the Great Elephant Adventure premieres Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. on GPB. The episode will also be available to stream with GPB Passport, YouTube, the PBS KIDS Video app, the PBS app and online at pbs.org/nature and pbskids.org.

GPB and the Georgia Council on Economic Education Launch

New Game Teaches Middle and High School Students About International Trade

I

n partnership with the Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE), GPB recently hosted an event to celebrate the launch of Let’s Trade, a new game designed to help students in grades 6–12 understand the role international

trade plays in our daily lives.

Let’s Trade features a friendly alien named Neila (alien backwards) who has crash-landed. Her spaceship is out of fuel, and players discover that Neila’s ship contains a unique product called Space-Made Items for Laughs and Excitement—or SMILEs. To create enough joy to power the ship and help Neila get home, players must produce and sell SMILEs.

”… there are opportunities for teachers to engage students with discussions on resources, prices, working with others, the importance of relationships, geography and more.” - Dr. Chris Cannon

Making SMILEs requires materials from around the world, providing the opportunity for students to learn how to negotiate deals, acquire the materials they need and sell SMILEs to willing buyers—all while managing their money and trying to generate enough global joy to send Neila home.

Panelists included Mike Raymer, GCEE Executive Director, Dr. Katrina Gulliver, Editorial Director at The Foundation for Economic Education; Scott Schara, Chief Operating Officer of US Multimodal Group; and Taube Ponce, Sr. International Trade Manager at the Georgia Department of Economic Development

The event at GPB’s headquarters featured an interactive teaching activity and live demonstration of Let’s Trade with Dr. Chris Cannon, GCEE Associate Director and Chief Program Officer. Attendees were also treated to a panel discussion moderated by GCEE Executive Director Mike Raymer which featured Dr. Katrina Gulliver, Editorial Director at The Foundation for Economic Education; Scott Schara, Chief Operating Officer of US Multimodal Group; and Taube Ponce, Sr. International Trade Manager at the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

“As an economic education resource, Let’s Trade is about as flexible and useful as they come,” said Dr. Cannon. “In addition to the obvious trade topics, there are opportunities for teachers to engage students with discussions on resources, prices, working with others, the importance of relationships, geography and more. I’m looking forward to seeing the creative ways teachers find to use Let’s Trade in their classrooms!”
