Accelerated, Accurate Diagnosis
For Alzheimer’s & Related Dementias
How to get a referral to Georgia Memory Net
Many Georgians say they’ve noticed problems with their memory. But only a minority of them have received a diagnosis for their symptoms, meaning they and their families don’t have access to appropriate treatment and support.
For Georgians experiencing memory loss or cognitive decline, a referral to Georgia Memory Net could be a good next step. GMN provides accurate and accelerated diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias at Memory Assessment Clinics around our state, and via telemedicine.
The first step is to have a conversation with your Primary Care Provider to ask if a referral to GMN is right for you. Visit GaMemoryNet.org/referrals to learn more about getting a referral to a GMN Memory Assessment.

Dear Friends,
It has been a whirlwind of a few months since my appointment as CEO of Georgia Public Broadcasting. Even after being involved in the higher levels of the organization’s leadership for the last decade, I’m still learning so much about how to navigate this new post. I carry no delusions about my level of importance within the company though. Ultimately, those doing the work that you enjoy every day, from GPB Next and Georgia Outdoors to Morning Edition and All Things Considered or our newest addition, Georgia In Play, are the ones who should be celebrated. And likewise, without you what are we exactly? The work that goes into these beautiful products would be completely lost without an audience; without the relationship we share with you across all our platforms.
And I keep going back to this phrase: Better Together. Here at GPB, when we pull together as one team, serving one mission, we’re unstoppable. And, in the same way, GPB is better together with you. Your participation, viewing, listening, and importantly, your support is the completion of this circle of creativity that begins with the simple spark of an idea. That is powerful. So indeed, we are all better together, and that’s why I’ve chosen this theme for my first year as CEO at GPB. You’ll be seeing it pop up in a variety of areas – from TV and Radio spots to fundraising campaigns. And internally it’s my goal to focus on unity, break down any silos that exist and level the field at GPB so creativity and service can come first.
I am so excited about what the coming year is going to bring, and I’m excited to bring you along with us. Please keep reading, watching, listening to, and using our products. And please remember that the lion’s share of the funding that keeps this all going is from people who do just that. People like you. And, in a year, I am confident we’ll look back and see all that we’ve accomplished at GPB and agree that we are indeed BETTER TOGETHER.
Warmest regards,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO

GPB Partners with Georgia Educators, FableVision Studios and the Georgia Department of Education for GASHA GO! World
The New App and Web-Based Learning Games and Animations Teach Computer Science and Problem Solving Skills to 4-8-Year-Olds

Picture a world where Gashlings, playful, kind, thoughtful creatures who live inside of arcade machines, come out at night to guide young adventurers on a journey filled with imagination, problem-solving and creative exploration. This is GASHA GO! World, a first-of-its-kind app and web-based learning collection designed to teach computer science to 4-8-year-olds in a fun and innovative way.
Created and developed by GPB in partnership with Georgia educators, FableVision Studios and the Georgia Department of Education, GASHA GO! World is a first-ofits-kind app and web-based collection featuring games, animated videos, a set of vocabulary cards, educator support guides and an activity book with stickers.
Featuring Gashlings Zoom, Deejo, Pow, Tuft, Bazzle and Geo, GASHA GO! World focuses on computational thinking, digital citizenship, innovative design and creative communication.
FableVision Studios president and co-founder Gary Goldberger, along with the company’s creative director Leigh Hallisey, explained the creative process behind GASHA GO! World and the importance of collaborating with students and teachers on its development.
“We are so proud of our long-standing partnership with GPB and the Georgia DOE,” said Gary. “This app is the culmination of years of work creating the GASHA GO! Universe. The GPB Educational team has always brought amazing creativity to the table.”
“When GPB was testing it, students actually named the characters,” said Leigh. “We’ve been focus testing every time we make games with them, and they are helping co-develop with us, which is awesome.”

FableVision Studios has worked with many different PBS stations on projects, and assures parents, caregivers and educators that along with GPB, the developers have the same commitment to serving children.

“We want to make sure that as many kids as possible can use what we make, regardless of what their physical or developmental abilities are,” said Leigh. “With GASHA GO! we made sure we’re modeling values and things that we believe in – creativity and working together. The big idea with this GASHA GO! round is it’s only by working at something and trying and failing and trying again that you really do learn.”

Help Support GPB by Donating Your Vehicle
Do you have a vehicle you’re thinking of selling, trading in or don’t need any longer? You can support GPB by donating your used car, truck, SUV, motorcycle, RV or boat.
You can skip the hassle of selling it yourself, and pick up is free no matter where your vehicle is located. We’ll handle the rest, from selling it to providing you with a tax receipt, and the proceeds benefit GPB.
Bob and Holly Jacobs recently donated their Studebaker Avanti, which had belonged to Bob’s father. “I donated it to NPR because NPR is part of my daily routine,” said Bob. “NPR was imprinted on me as a youth. My mother was a faithful listener. Through her it became part of my life.”
GPB serves communities throughout Georgia and beyond, including yours. Donating your vehicle is a great way to help keep GPB strong for all of us. Each vehicle donated supports our mission to foster a love of learning, culture and community.
Join with the Jacobs and hundreds of others who have so generously donated vehicles to GPB. Visit us online at www.gpb.org/cars to find out more or call 877-GPB-1-CAR (877- 472-1227).

GPB RADIO
GPB’s No Pledge Drive Pledge Drive is Underway!
We’re taking a different approach to fundraising on GPB Radio this fall with our No Pledge Drive Pledge Drive. Instead of a traditional Fall Fund Drive where we take time away from the programs you listen to on GPB, we’re airing short messages to remind you of how essential your support is to enable us to bring you trusted, fact-based news coverage and informative conversations that present multiple sides of the issues we face. But while we’re coming to you less on the air to ask for your support, our program costs are increasing significantly – including the fees we pay to NPR and PBS to broadcast the programs that mean so much to so many. We hope you’ll continue - or consider increasing - your support to help us meet the challenges ahead and be of even greater service to communities throughout Georgia and beyond.

LISTEN TO GPB RADIO
Thoughts from GPB Radio Staff on the Importance of Donor Support and Their Work...
“As the daughter of a librarian and first African American corporate manager of a major retail chain, I was raised to be a critical thinker. I grew up listening to Morning Edition and All Things Considered as they played on the radio in the kitchen and the car. As an adult, I choose to work in public radio because it welcomes all people to engage in the conversation. It fosters a sense of community. It feels like home to me. Even in these difficult days this country is going through, I am reminded that we are better when we take time to listen to one another and work through the tough issues together. That is why I work in public radio.”
“I work in public media because we’re guided by the public interest. We’re chasing important stories that matter in the long run, and that’s how I want to spend my time. I’m also in public media because we’re here for everyone, with no paywall blocking access to good information. Donor support makes it all happen, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Peter Biello, GPB Host of All Things Consideredand our Georgia Today podcast
Leah Fleming, GPB Host of Georgia in Play
“I’ve been with GPB since 2006, but long before that I was a listener. As a reporter I’ve covered a wide array of topics, including agriculture, education and the environment. I’m now the News Director and help edit and shape the stories you hear on GPB. When you support quality public radio, you support a team of dedicated journalists who work every day to share stories from people and communities across the state. Your support funds the work of our newsroom, and as I like to tell people in my community, ‘I don’t just work here, I’m also a donor.’”
“I grew up with public radio and television. Maybe that’s why I love words and books so much! Now I get to interview authors as part of our new books podcast, Narrative Edge. I love getting to satisfy my curiosity along with our listeners’.”
Orlando Montoya, Producer/Newscaster Josephine Bennett, Director of News and PartnershipsGPB IN THE COMMUNITY
Join Us for a Live Remote Broadcast Thursday, October 12 of All Things Considered with GPB Host Peter Biello

Every weekday, listeners from around the state tune in to GPB from their homes, offices, cars, and elsewhere to catch up on the day’s news and commentaries with All Things Considered. As one of NPR’s flagship programs, it has been a news source staple for over five decades. In fact, All Things Considered is the most listened-to, afternoon drive-time, news radio program in the country.
Many of today’s loyal listeners grew up humming the tune to the synthesized theme music from the backseat of their parents’ family car. The program’s roots run deep in the hearts of many Georgians. That’s why GPB is pleased to invite you to view a live remote broadcast of the program at Eventide Brewing in Atlanta on Thursday, October 12 from 4 - 6 p.m. Fans at the event will have the chance to meet GPB’s local All Things Considered host, Peter Biello, participate in some trivia and even take home exclusive GPB swag.
We hope you can join us for this live remote broadcast Thursday, October 12 in Atlanta. Please visit gpb.org/community for more information.
Time For A Diagnosis For Memory Issues?
Three Answers From Kyle Brunen, Georgia Memory Net Project Director
Though hundreds of thousands of Georgians say they’ve noticed signs of memory loss or cognitive impairment, the majority haven’t received a diagnosis for those symptoms.
We asked Georgia Memory Net’s Kyle Brunen three questions about how, and why, to get a referral for diagnosis.

In the past, it could take Georgians over a year to get an appointment for Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Has that changed?
The landscape is changing but there’s still a lack of cognitive neurologists to help patients with cognitive decline and memory loss. Worse still, the majority of these providers are typically clustered in large cities, which creates access barriers for rural areas. Since 2018, we have been building the Georgia Memory Net (GMN) to meet this need for early diagnosis and treatment. With funding and support from the state, we have established seven GMN Memory Assessment Clinics throughout Georgia, oftentimes reducing wait times from months or years to days or weeks.
How do Georgians get a referral to Georgia Memory Net for accelerated and accurate diagnosis?
If you or a family member are struggling with symptoms of memory loss, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider (PCP). If your provider decides that a more comprehensive assessment is needed, they can refer a patient to GMN with a simple form.
1 2 3
What are the benefits of diagnosis?
An early and accurate diagnosis is crucial. Identifying the specific type of cognitive impairment can lead to more appropriate and customized care. New therapies are here to help slow the progression of cognitive decline, but they are only effective for some patients who are identified early in the stage of disease progression.
