Many Georgians say they’ve noticed problems with their memory. But only a minority of them have received a diagnosis for their symptoms, meaning they and their families don’t have access to appropriate treatment and support.
For Georgians experiencing memory loss or cognitive decline, a referral to Georgia Memory Net could be a good next step. GMN provides accurate and accelerated diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias atMemory Assessment Clinics around our state, and via telemedicine.
The first step is to have a conversation with your Primary Care Provider to ask if a referral to GMN is right for you. Visit GaMemoryNet.org/referral to learn more about getting a referral to a GMN Memory Assessment Clinics.

Dear Friends,
November has arrived and brings with it the unofficial start to the holiday season as we celebrate Thanksgiving. We are certainly in a period of thankfulness and reflection at GPB. Every year at this time, we publish our annual report for donors in Next, and as I look at the various initiatives across the organization, I want to express my most sincere gratitude to you because our work would not be possible without the support of our loyal donors.
I hope that when you read it, you’ll realize how much your gift helps us serve Georgians in innovative an impactful ways, from opening dialogues around important topics through our community engagement events, to bringing you news and features about the many wonderful places in our state. As the fall season has brought so much devastation from hurricanes to our region, it’s also important to note that GPB plays a vital role in disseminating information to keep our citizens safe through our partnership with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA).
But the year isn’t over yet, and as you’ll see, we’ve got lots of exciting things happening this month, including the premiere of Ken Burns’ new documentary series, LEONARDO da VINCI. You’ll also read about our coverage of the Georgia Reads campaign kick-off and how you can learn more about this literacy initiative.
Lastly, you can enjoy Thanksgiving with GPB as we bring you the annual favorite “Turkey Confidential,” a special episode from The Splendid Table. Check out the article and send in your meal preparation questions now so you’ll be ready for the big day!
Warmest regards,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO
LEONARDO da VINCI
A Film by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon
LEONARDO da VINCI, a new, two-part, four-hour documentary directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon will air November 18 and 19, at 8 - 10 p.m.
The film is Burns’ first non-American subject and looks at how the artist influenced and inspired future generations, and finds in his soaring imagination and profound intellect the foundation for a conversation we are still having today: What is our relationship with nature, and what does it mean to be human?
Set against the rich and dynamic backdrop of Renaissance Italy, at a time of skepticism and freethinking, regional war and religious upheaval, LEONARDO da VINCI brings the artist’s towering achievements to life through his prolific personal notebooks, primary and secondary accounts of his life, and on-camera interviews with modern scholars, artists, engineers, inventors, and admirers.
“No single person can speak to our collective effort to understand the world and ourselves,” said Ken Burns. “But Leonardo had a unique genius for inquiry, aided by his extraordinary skills as an artist and scientist, that helps us better understand the natural world that we are part of and to appreciate more fully what it means to be alive and human.”
LEONARDO da VINCI follows the artist’s evolution as a draughtsman and painter, scientist and engineer, who used notebooks to explore an astonishing array of subjects including painting, philosophy, engineering, warfare, anatomy and geography, among many others.
Tune in on Monday, November 18 at 8 p.m. for the premiere of this captivating documentary on GPB. LEONARDO da VINCI is also available on GPB Passport as part of a full collection of Ken Burns films.

GPB Teams Up with Former NFL Player and Literacy Advocate Malcolm Mitchell to Share the Excitement of the Georgia Reads Campaign
GPB brought the excitement of the Georgia Reads Campaign official kick-off event on Monday, September 30 directly to homes and classrooms across the state with a live stream that attracted nearly fifty thousand viewers.
The Georgia Reads Campaign is designed to draw attention to the urgent need for improved literacy rates among Georgians of all ages, with a particular focus on increasing students’ reading proficiency by the third grade. This campaign is an extension of SB211 Governor Brian Kemp signed into law, establishing the Georgia Council on Literacy.
The GPB Education team with Malcolm Mitchell (center).
During the kick-off event, former NFL player and literacy advocate Malcolm Mitchell addressed a crowd of over 300 second graders and their teachers, emphasizing literacy’s critical role in education and lifelong success. The broadcast also featured a special reading of My Very Favorite Book in The Whole Wide World by Mitchell, who serves as the Georgia Reads Coach.
Mitchell, who has dedicated himself to promoting literacy since his time as a professional athlete, expressed his enthusiasm for the Reading Rally, saying. “A community that reads together, succeeds together.”
You can view the live stream of the Georgia Reads Campaign kick off at gpb.org/georgiareadsday.
By providing educational resources, hosting community events, and engaging with students and families, the campaign aims to foster a love of reading and circumvent consequences for Georgians, as low achievement in reading affects economy, safety and health. Visit the official website at georgiareads.org.
GPB IN THE COMMUNITY
GPB Explores History of Disability with Screening and Panel Discussion for Renegades
GPB held a community event on October 5 to celebrate the release of Renegades, a new digital series of five documentary short films showcasing the lives and cultural contributions of little-know historical figures with disabilities. The five films focus on the lives of Brad Lomax, Celestine Tate Harrington, Daniel Inouye, Judy-Lynn Del Rey and Thomas Wiggins.
Hosted by award-winning musician and disability rights champion Lachi, Renegades premiered Tuesdays, October 1 – October 29 on the American Masters YouTube channel, PBS.org and the PBS App in honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
In partnership with Oglethorpe University, GLS (Georgia Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled) and New Disabled South among others, GPB’s event featured an accessible screening of the film followed by a panel discussion. Attendees were invited to explore Oglethorpe University’s Museum of Art, including current exhibitions, The Gaze and Feel the Music, that celebrate accessibility and disability pride.
One in four American adults have disabilities, yet those with disabilities remain underrepresented in the media. Launched in conjunction with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act by American Masters, ITVS and Inspiration Films, Renegades offers a vibrant and experiential understanding of disability history and encourages exploration of the societal and interpersonal values of both non-disabled people and those with disabilities.
“The American Masters Renegade series was amazing in itself, but when you allow people to discuss what they just witnessed and how they felt about it, it only cements the need for all of us to continue the good fight,” said Garrick Scott, Executive Director of Multiple Choices Center for Independent Living, who moderated the discussion panel for the event.

GPB Programming Highlights
As a supporter of GPB, you help fulfill our mission to create, produce and distribute high quality programs and services that educate, inform and entertain audiences and enrich the quality of their lives. Thank you!
Here are some highlights of the diverse and compelling programs we brought to you on our television, radio and digital platforms this year.
Television
This past spring was especially busy with the premiere of four new MASTERPIECE series: Nolly starring Helena Bonham Carter, the thorny romance of Alice & Jack, the true tale of injustice and wrongs righted, Mr. Bates vs The Post Office, and Maryland, the story of estranged sisters who unite to unearth the truth about their mother’s death.
GPB also aired new seasons of the PBS perennial favorite Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and took viewers on armchair journeys to the Mediterranean (Hotel Portofino), the Cornish Coast (Doc Martin), London (Miss Scarlett and the Duke), and Australia (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries). Also making its return last winter was Season 3 of MASTERPIECE’S popular All Creatures Great and Small
Our PBS offerings were complimented by a host of local and originally produced programs. GPB was fortunate to team up with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for a very special co-production - ASO Presents: Carlos Simon Curates - featuring Grammy nominated composer Carlos Simon and the Morehouse and Spelman College Glee Clubs.
We aired new seasons of Georgia favorites A Fork in the Road hosted by David Zelski, Georgia Outdoors hosted by Sharon Collins, View Finders hosted by Chris Greer and Paul Daniel, fall staple Football Fridays in Georgia, and our latest original program - Peach Jam, a diverse mix of musical acts from across the state - hosted by Jeremy Powell. Peach Jam and A Fork in the Road have been formatted into successful original podcasts as well.
GPB’s external production partnerships were recognized with eight nominations at this year’s Southeast EMMY Awards. Your Fantastic Mind took home two statuettes, and the documentaries Inside the Warren Commission and Stefan Thomas: Rock and Chisel earned one each. GPB also distributed several shows nationally to public media stations around the country, including: A Night of Georgia Music, View Finders, Your Fantastic Mind, and Inside the Warren Commission.
In the world of politics, GPB recorded the Atlanta Press Club primary debates in our TV studios, then aired and streamed them live this past spring. GPB also broadcast Governor Brian Kemp’s 2024 State of the State address.
For kids ages 4-8, PBS KIDS debuted Lyla in the Loop. The series follows a Jamaican American girl and her fuzzy blue sidekick on their comical adventures exploring computational thinking and creative solutions while helping others in their community.
Radio/News/Digital
Anchored by the reporting of GPB’s award-winning journalists and our broadcasts of NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, GPB brought thousands of hours of breaking news and in-depth reporting, as well as cultural, social, political, science and sports coverage to audiences statewide. Among several exciting developments, host Pamela Kirkland joined Devon Zwald on our Morning Edition team, and in June we added an extra hour to the show featuring a wide range of local content from GPB’s news reporters.
On the national front, we carried live coverage of President Biden’s State of the Union address and the Presidential debates between Donald Trump and Joe Biden and Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Pamela Kirkland reported live during the PBS Primetime Trump/ Biden Debate Special from the GPB studios parking deck overlooking the CNN Studios where the debate took place.
Stateside, GPB carried the Atlanta Press Club Debates and the Governor’s State of the State address on our 20-station statewide radio network. As an important service to our listeners, we also carried news conferences from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and Governor Brian Kemp as Hurricane Debby swept up the coast.

Host Donna Lowry speaks to Governor Brian Kemp on Lawmakers.
Throughout 2024, GPB News is participating in the CPB’s America Amplified voterengagement project. GPB has received over 400 audience responses, the most of any participating station, to an online survey of voters rating their top issues in the upcoming election. In response, reporter Sarah Kallis has produced stories on the five top-of-mind issues for voters - Reproductive Rights, Democracy/Bipartisanship, Environment/Climate Change, Economy/Cost of Living, and Immigration. GPB has also produced a voter’s guide with answers from the candidates to voters’ questions.
We aired a wide range of special programming for Black History and Women’s History Months, including I See U - MLK Day, Selected Shorts: A Celebration of Langston Hughes, and Kitchen Sisters: Buildings Speak, Pioneering Women Architects. And we made changes to our weekend lineup, adding No Small Endeavor and Bullseye with Jesse Thorn.
Our All Things Considered team of Peter Biello and Orlando Montoya launched a lively and entertaining book review podcast called Narrative Edge which had nearly 400,000 downloads in its first year. Peter is also host of our daily news podcast Georgia Today
Accolades: GPB’s Lawmakers marked its 54th season on the air, with host Donna Lowry and Producer Tristan Smith garnering an Emmy nomination for the Lawmakers Beyond the Dome technology special. GPB was also invited to be a pilot station for the PBS YouTube Multi-Channel Network thanks to our success with the platform. GPB has seen significant growth across some of our YouTube channels, with the main channel seeing a 40% jump in views while Sports channel subscribers have grown by over 60%.

Foundation Support FY 2023-2024
Thank You To These Foundations Who Make Our Work Possible
Grants awarded to Georgia Public Broadcasting by private and corporate foundations are crucial to keeping our original programming thriving. Without their support, award-winning programs such as Georgia Outdoors, GPB News and GPB Education’s digital resources and outreach to schools would be significantly diminished.
