Dear Friends,

Springtime has finally arrived in Georgia, and with it your May issue of GPB Next. This is always an exciting time of year for us here at GPB. Festival season is in full bloom, so our teams have been out and about from The Atlanta Dogwood Festival to the Savannah Music Festival extolling the great efforts of GPB in communities across the state. Remember, we’re more than television and radio – GPB’s efforts in communities are what set us apart from other commercial media companies. Be sure to check out GPB.org/community from time to time to see where we’re going to be and hopefully, we’ll be near where you are soon. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at ask@gpb.org or 800.222.4788 if your community is looking for a way to partner with GPB around our programming or resources!

As we’ve discussed in Next over the last few months, GPB is deep into a strategic planning process that will set our goals and intentions for the next five to ten years. So far, we’ve had very fruitful sessions with board leadership, organizational leadership, staff, donors and community stakeholders. I’m excited to share the efforts of this plan later this summer with all of you so we can embark on the next adventure for GPB together. One theme I see repeatedly is GPB’s role in storytelling and local stories. I would expect that we will be putting a tremendous amount of effort into this in the coming years. GPB is uniquely positioned to serve Georgians through untold storytelling. There are so many wonderful things happening right now in Georgia that we are built to highlight!

One thing we’re also hearing in feedback is how much you value this magazine. Thank you for taking the time to read through, and I’m glad to know it is of value to you. Not only do you get to keep up with television schedules, but you’re also given an insider’s look at the work happening across our company, spanning from television and radio content to digital initiatives, community engagement and education. We want to be an asset to you and your fellow Georgians. Ultimately, GPB exists to make communities better, and I believe we do it every single day. Enjoy!

Warmly,

gpb

GPB News Partners with America Amplified to Focus on Voters’ Voices in 2024 Election Coverage

Georgia remains in the national spotlight as the country heads into the November 2024 election. Its status as a “battleground state” means candidates and their surrogates will likely make several trips to the Peach State as they try to win votes.

As part of our commitment to share stories that reflect the cities and towns that make up Georgia, GPB’s coverage for 2024 will be focused on YOU, the voters.

To assist with our news coverage plan, GPB is taking part in America Amplified, a community engagement journalism initiative funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that provides resources to help public media newsrooms across the nation more deeply engage the communities we serve.

To help us tell community-driven stories, we need your help. Please take a few minutes and fill out our voter survey at gpb.org/elections.

As part of our survey, we’re asking you to share with us what your top three issues are as you decide which candidates will get your vote. Your answers will help us identify and cover those issues and ultimately, create a congressional voter guide where candidates will be asked the questions you want answered.

Our goal is to hear from as many people in Georgia as possible, so thank you in advance!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Shelly Kleppsattel

GPB’s supporters range from one-time $5 givers to mid-level donors, to planned givers who leave us in their estate plan, to transformational Leadership Circle donors who invest in GPB’s programming and resources, which secure our future. This month, we spotlight mid-level donor, Shelly Kleppsattel

How long have you been a GPB donor?

I honestly do not know, which means it’s been a long time. I started as a sustainer and then was inspired by the Prince Family Match opportunity and made a larger one-time gift.

What drew you to GPB?

Both PBS and NPR. I’m old enough to remember when channel options numbered in the few, and public television was often a go-to for our family. Now, many of my sentences start with “I heard on NPR that …” and whenever I rent a car the first thing I do is locate the local affiliate station on the car’s radio. In terms of broadcasting, the programming at GPB is stellar, well-rounded and always enjoyable.

How do you engage with or enjoy GPB content?

Radio, television and Passport. From contributors such as Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. to Ken Burns, to travel with Rick Steves and Samantha Brown to Downton Abbey, there is something for everyone.

Why do you think it’s important to support the mission of GPB and what sense of satisfaction do you have as a donor knowing you’re supporting our work?

I think of it in terms of a streaming service of sorts – just as I pay for the privilege of Netflix or Amazon Prime, there is a cost associated with content. Access to public television and NPR is a privilege and the only way to guarantee excellence in content is to be part of the financial foundation that supports those efforts Until this year, I was unaware of the scope of the online education opportunities afforded to school kids. While I do not have children of my own, as a society we are collectively responsible for ensuring that we support future generations, and this is made possible through the online educational efforts of GPB.

Indie Lens Pop-Up Season 24 Screenings Offer Thought-Provoking Films

Pictured: Attendees at a screening of A Town Called Victoria

GPB will wrap up another great season of Indie Lens Pop-Up film screenings with a chance to watch clips from the film The Tuba Thieves. Hosted in partnership with 7 Stages Theatre for their Curious Sensory Encounters, the screenings occur Friday, May 17 – Monday, May 20 Visit 7stages.org to learn more.

Indie Lens Po-Up Season 24 began in December with a showing of A Town Called Victoria. Attendees were asked to break into small groups afterwards to discuss what makes a welcoming community. The conversation was led by our friends from Out of Hand Theater and Music in Common.

The Loudermilk Conference Center graciously hosted our second Indie Lens Pop-Up screening. On January 28, the community gathered to watch Razing Liberty Square. The panel discussed climate gentrification and its implications in the Atlanta area.

In February, GPB traveled to Mercer University in Macon to screen Breaking the News. The panel had a thought-provoking conversation about how newsrooms that embrace the lived experiences of their journalists create more engaging content and civic participation.

In April, we screened Matter of Mind: My Parkinson’s in GPB’s Atlanta studios in partnership with the Parkinson’s Foundation. The post-screening discussion featured a conversation with Dr. Thomas Wichman, of the Morris K. Udall Center of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease Research and a representative from the Georgia chapter of the Parkinson’s Foundation.

CALL TO MIND: Birth & Depression: The Unspoken Conversation

Friday, May 10, 2 p.m.

Seventy-five percent of postpartum problems go untreated – often with devasting consequences. Suicide and overdoses are leading causes of maternal death in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first-ever pill specifically aimed at postpartum depression, but most health plans don’t cover the medication. This special program looks at the under-recognized public health issue of postpartum depression and the challenge of treatment.

In addition, as part of her regular reporting, GPB News Senior Health Reporter Ellen Eldridge will share the story of Operation Sky Savior, a program that takes military veterans skydiving as a form of mental health exercise. Listeners can tune in for GPB News on the GPB Radio Network and GPB Atlanta 88.5 FM. The GPB News web page at gpb.org/news also features the latest headlines.

In 2023, we created the GPB Mental Health and Wellness page at gpb.org/mental-health For those interested in learning more about mental health topics, the site is regularly updated with news stories and resources for adults and children, like the Emmy-winning youth mental wellness series Hope Givers produced through GPB Education and distributed nationally to PBS Learning Media.
