Dear Friends,

Welcome to the March 2024 issue of GPB Next. As you begin to shake off the colder months and look toward the renewal that springtime brings, please be reminded that here at GPB we’re in our own cycle of renewal. For several months now, we’ve been getting deeper into the process of strategic planning and audience research.

As I have shared before, it’s time to set a new strategic vision for GPB, and this is the first step in that direction. In the media world, it sometimes seems that the technology of years can happen in only days, so it’s important that we’re on top of the digital landscape as it continues to evolve. While GPB will always be mission-centered on delivering broadcast television, radio news and information, we must also look to new delivery mechanisms in the digitalscape, deepen our roots based in education and extend the arm of community engagement in a way only a public media company can.

Perhaps what I love most about GPB is that every day is something new; a new challenge to rise to and meet. I hope that in the coming months we’ll become even better at sharing our mission with you and people all over our state – GPB is more than a media company, more than television or radio – we are a vital community resource and a strategic service organization aimed at making your experience as a Georgian better and more informed.

As you thumb through this issue, you’ll see lots of places where we’re making a difference. And, of course, there’s always room for the entertainment we curate for you as well. From new MASTERPIECE series to interesting and unique programs produced right here in Georgia celebrating Women’s History Month - as I always say, there’s something for everyone on GPB.

Thank you for your continued support as we strive to serve you and your fellow friends and neighbors across Georgia. Together, we can ensure that GPB builds a bridge into a vibrant, engaging and dynamic future.

Warmly,

gpb

Don’t Miss CALL THE MIDWIFE Season 13 and MASTERPIECE ’s “Nolly ” and “Alice & Jack ”

If you have plans on the evening of Sunday, March 17, you may want to clear your calendar and prepare the popcorn as three new, must-see drama series premiere on GPB in one night .

Kicking off at 8 p.m., the beloved series, CALL THE MIDWIFE is returning with an allnew Season 13 featuring six new episodes. This period drama explores the complex medical and personal situations on the midwifery and district nursing rounds.

Season 13 features Poplar coping with the popularity of home births under the auspices of the Sisters and the characters seeing stories of poor housing challenges and health issues for the nurses, midwives and nuns of the Nonnatus House.

Next up, at 9 p.m., GPB presents an all-new and unforgettable MASTERPIECE series Nolly. The show stars Helena Bonham Carter as the British soap opera legend Noele “Nolly” Gordon. As one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and 70s, Nolly was unceremoniously fired from her hit show “Crossroads” at the height of her career, making front-page news, and causing her to make a pivot to theater where the question of why she was fired still haunted her.

Stream your favorite programs with GPB Passport - gpb.org/passport

This new three-episode series is a bold exploration of how the establishment turns on women who refuse to play by the rules. Nolly is an outrageously fun and wildly entertaining ride through Gordon’s most tumultuous, trailblazing years, while also being a sharp, affectionate, and even heartbreaking portrayal of a forgotten icon.

And lastly, we’ll end the night with an all-new love story for the ages: MASTERPIECE ’s “Alice & Jack,” premiering at 10 p.m., starring Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson. When the couple first meets, they’re bound by a connection so powerful it seems nothing can break it, but life and its emotional complexities get in the way. This rich cinematic series is honest, intimate and surprisingly funny, while revealing love in all its unexpected, kaleidoscopic beauty.

From female trailblazers in their careers, to unforgettable love stories, these new dramatic series will have you hooked through the end. Don’t miss their premiere on Sunday, March 17 from 8 - 10 p.m. on GPB

GPB and Mercer University’s Reg Murphy Center for Collaborative Journalism Host

Insightful Discussion of Breaking the News

GPB hosted a public screening and panel discussion at Mercer University’s Reg Murphy Center for Collaborative Journalism in February for Breaking the News. The film focuses on the launch of the news agency The 19th* and explores what people read in the news and why certain topics are chosen as news.

As a formal partner of the Center since 2011, GPB has played a role in training new generations of journalists.

“Our students have benefited greatly from working alongside the professionals at GPB Radio and our partners in television and print,” said Liz Jarvis Fabian, Civic Journalism Senior Fellow at the Center, who moderated the panel discussion.“The screening of Breaking the News was another great opportunity to open students’ eyes to the struggles and obstacles they may face in traditional newsrooms and discover the passion of those who are willing to walk away from a secure job to reach underserved communities. This may be the inspiration they need to take the extra steps to include those who might not have a voice otherwise.”

“The screening of Breaking the News was another great opportunity to open students’ eyes to the struggles and obstacles they may face in traditional newsrooms and discover the passion of those who are willing to walk away from a secure job to reach underserved communities.”

Fabian was joined by panelists Tanya Ott, Assistant Professor of Journalism in Residence at Mercer University; Traci Powell, Founder of the Pivot Fund; Keith Reed, Editor at Capital B; and Sofi Gratas, a GPB reporter based in Macon who covers rural health and healthcare for GPB. The group held a thoughtprovoking conversation about how newsrooms that embrace the lived experiences of their journalists create more engaging content and civic participation.

“It’s so refreshing to watch the reporters in Breaking the News build an entirely new newsroom that’s focused on empowering groups that have largely been ignored,” said Gratas. “It’s not easy being a woman, both in a general sense and in the journalism world, and I’m eternally grateful to those before me who have worked tooth and nail to change the landscape.”

Breaking the News is part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up series that brings people together for film screenings and conversation. If you missed the film’s GPB broadcast and you’d like to explore the topic of how news stories get covered and whose point of view gets centered in the stories, you can stream the film with GPB Passport.

Special Lineup of Georgia-Focused Documentaries Airing Monday, March 25 Commemorates Women’s History Month

In commemoration of Women’s History Month, GPB is presenting a special night of fascinating documentary films highlighting the stories of women from Georgia.

Beginning at 9 p.m., Lillian Smith: Breaking the Silence, tells the story of a child of the South who was seen as a traitor for her stance on racial and gender equality. Smith’s bestselling novel “Strange Fruit” denounced the toxic social conditions that repressed the lives and imaginations of both Black and white Americans.

“Lillian Smith is an unsung hero of the Civil Rights movement and was one of the few white Southern writers who remained in the South to write about the evils of white supremacy and segregation,” said the film’s producer, Hal Jacobs.

At 10 p.m., The Day That Shook Georgia explores the 1971 explosion at the Thiokol Chemical Plant in Woodbine that took the lives of 29 workers, predominantly Black women. The explosion was one of the worst industrial disasters in U.S. history, and a grassroots campaign seeks to award the victims with the Congressional Gold Medal.

“The explosion at the Thiokol Chemical Plant in 1971 was a significant event in our nation’s history,” said the film’s director, Patrick Longstreth. “It has nearly been lost from collective memory, and yet it grows more relevant over time. We hope this film will inspire people today who are working for safer working conditions, equal pay for women and better opportunities for minorities.”

At 10:30 p.m., Mary Crovatt Hambidge: Whistler, Wanderer, Weaver, Utopian shares the life of the founder of the Hambidge Center for the Arts and Sciences, which maintains a 600-acre artist residency in Rabun County. Born and raised in a prominent South Georgia family, Hambidge hung out in bohemian circles in New York in the 1920s, then found her calling after she moved to the North Georgia mountains and started homesteading and employing local spinners and weavers.

“Curiosity and access are the two keys to documentary filmmaking,” said producer Hal Jacobs. “In 2014, I was editing the web content of the Hambidge Center for the Arts and Sciences and came across the story of its founder. Who wouldn’t want to know more? Fortunately, I had complete access through the Hambidge Center.”

To learn more about Mary Crovatt Hambidge, Lillian Smith and the victims of the Thiokol Chemical Plant tragedy, tune in for this special night of programming

“We worked with Georgia educators and leading industry experts to tell a holistic story of Georgia’s water,” says Mary Anne Lane, Director of Educational Content at Georgia Public Broadcasting. “One of my favorite features in this online resource is the collection of career videos, so kids can explore the variety of job opportunities in the water industry.”

Georgia Water joins GPB’s collection of 30+ virtual learning journeys and is the third collaboration between GPB Education and Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. Previous projects include Georgia’s Water Live Exploration and episodes of Camp GPB.

“We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with GPB and the opportunities they offer to showcase the vital water resources of Georgia,” says Sarah Skinner, Manager at Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. “Resources like the virtual learning journey allow us to take kids on an in-depth exploration of how water plays an important role in every aspect of our daily lives. Water is a shared resource and we all must do our part to conserve and protect it.”
