Dear Friend,

As I write this, I am just returning from the PBS Annual meeting. Each year, this provides the opportunity for public media stations from across the country to gather and preview upcoming episodes for the new seasons of favorites such as MASTERPIECE, NOVA, NATURE and Finding Your Roots, as well as new documentary series and PBS KIDS programs. And while I can’t go into great detail because much of the program information is embargoed until closer to the airdate, I can say that once again I came away from the meeting deeply inspired by the stories and their creators.

I’m also equally moved by the chance to talk with people from other stations and hear about their continued commitment to serve their communities through the programming, particularly after a very difficult year with federal funding cuts. Rather than being deterred, it’s clear we’re all more determined to present our audiences with unique, untold stories and vital resources such as children’s programming that helps prepare them for school and teaches valuable life skills.

One highlight of the conference for me was author Jacqueline Woodson’s discussion of how children need “mirrors and windows” in literature and media to see their own lives reflected and to understand the lives of others. When children see characters and experiences that resemble their own, it helps to validate their existence, while having a window into a different world teaches them to appreciate the humanity in others. I tend to think that’s true for all of us regardless of our age, and it reminds me how important the work GPB does is, because our vision to Unite & Uplift Georgia means that we invite everyone in for stories and initiatives that we hope will resonate with them in a meaningful way.

The Fans Fueling Atlanta’s Soccer Revolution

By Rachel Buchman Atlanta is a soccer city.

It feels like both a gradual development for Georgia and something that happened all at once. Georgia isn’t new to passionate fans: whether it’s the Atlanta Braves and Savannah Bananas baseball teams or football teams at a variety of experience levels, the array of pop culture conventions, or the fans who travel to every Antiques Roadshow taping or attend every MASTERPIECE drama screening at GPB’s studios on 14th Street. Georgians don’t shy away from celebrating the interests that they love: it’s a way of life in this state. But while I’m familiar with taking over downtown Atlanta every Labor Day weekend for Dragon Con, I’m less versed in Atlanta United: Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a fixture of Atlanta’s skyline, advertisements are everywhere and merchandise shops are packed with customers, but the soccer fandom still feels both vibrant to those in the know and a mystery to those who have yet to experience a game.

Until now: with the 2026 FIFA World Cup arriving in Atlanta this month, the momentum around the event and soccer in Georgia is growing.

That includes a new four-part documentary series from the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau and production team Tantra Worldwide, United We Roar. But instead of interviews with multiple Atlanta United players and coaches, the documentary looks at soccer in Georgia through a different lens: the fans, and the friendship and communities created out of the love of the team.

“The series [highlights] the growth of the sport through fans and local businesses while expanding the story beyond the pitch,” said Sheretha Bell, Senior Vice President of marketing and brand strategy, Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It reflects Atlanta’s cultural heartbeat through music, creativity and community.”

Through the perspectives of six of the largest supporter groups of Atlanta United FC to capture the sheer scale and diversity of the fanbase, viewers are introduced to groups that are inclusive of race, gender, class and age, from the LGBTQ community to the youth soccer teams who are inspired by Atlanta United to hone their skills. They come from different backgrounds, but they unite as one to support the team and each other.

“Across every group, there’s an intentional effort to create space for connection, expression and belonging,” Bell explained, sharing that such connections range from card games and bar hangouts to showing up for one another’s families in times of need. “That’s what makes this soccer culture, and really Atlanta’s culture, so powerful.

It’s not just a moment of success, either. When both the Atlanta Convention and & Visitors Bureau and Tantra Worldwide were asked what surprised them when making this series, the answer was discovering how deep Atlanta’s soccer roots are, but revealing a system that is being sustained and expanded for generations to come.

“You have one of the most passionate fan bases in Major League Soccer, but also real investment in what comes next – through the new U.S. Soccer Federation Headquarters, the addition of a new National Women’s Soccer League and continued growth in youth recreation leagues, academies and innovative approaches like Soccer in the Streets,” Bell shared, regarding both the passion and longevity of both Atlanta United FC and soccer as a sport. “Together, these efforts show how the ecosystem around the game in Atlanta is being built for long-term impact.”

It’s a heartfelt, fascinating look at how a team and a sport has changed the lives of so many in Atlanta for the better, and it’s difficult to resist experiencing a game for yourself.

“The people are the culture,” Bell replied after being asked what drew the Visitors Bureau and Tantra Worldwide to telling the fans’ stories. “You see it in the artwork across the city, hear it in the music in and around the stadium and taste it in the food at local restaurants and tailgates. Even the kits and the fan gear become expressions of identity, heritage and pride. It’s all distinctly Atlanta - diverse, global and deeply connected - and it’s the fans who bring it to life.”

And if you want to attend an Atlanta United game for the first time, Bell insisted that new fans shouldn’t be nervous about stepping into Mercedes-Benz. “Just show up and be ready to have a great time. Even if you don’t know much about soccer, you’ll have 75,000 friends to learn from and cheer alongside.”

n partnership with Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra continues its long-standing tradition of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with The King Celebration Concert 2026 airing Friday, June 19 at 8 and 10 p.m.

Conductor Jonathan Taylor Rush presents works by Uzee Brown, Jasmine Barnes, Adolphus Hailstork and William Grant Still, plus gospel songs and other repertoire reflective of the Ebenezer worship experience in this television broadcast, first shown

by GPB via livestream in January. The special also features guest vocalists Dr. Patrice E. Turner, Timothy Miller and Tamika Patton, along with the combined choruses of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Home is Where the Vicar is: The Final Season of Grantchester

I

t’s the end of an era, or at least the end of a police detective teaming up with a vicar to solve murders in a small town near Cambridge.

After 11 seasons, Grantchester comes to an end this summer. Initially based on James Runcie’s series of mystery novels set in the 1950s, the TV show has expanded into an array of characters and plotlines, including three vicars and the townspeople who support, challenge and love them as part of the Grantchester family.

Incidentally, family is what’s on the top of Alphy’s mind at the start of this season: at the end of Season 10, he discovered that Geordie had found his birth mother without his knowledge and permission, and after much reflection, he set off to find her at the address given. Season 11 opens with Alphy’s newfound bond with his mother, Mira, one that he can only describe as “perfect.” As far as he’s concerned, everything can stay the way it is.

And yet, nothing is perfect: a murder at an American-style drive-in film launches the final chapters of Grantchester’s beloved cast. Alphy begins to question his faith the more he learns about Mira, her reasons for abandoning him as a baby and how her life has unfolded since. Cathy’s desire to grow CeCe’s Boutique creates tension and regrets between those she loves most, Leonard looks for meaning to his life beyond the halfway house he started with Daniel, Larry and Miss Scott navigate their new marriage and Mrs. C remains suspicious of any changes in the town, from a new accountant for the boutique to sampling a hot dog at the drive-in. And at the center of it all, trying to hold everything together, is Geordie, plagued by past decisions of his own as he contemplates both his personal and professional future.

In some ways, it feels familiar: Geordie utters “Christ on a bike” at least once, Alphy contemplates the morality of the Church, Leonard offers his support and Mrs. C meddles in everything she shouldn’t, alongside a weekly murder wrapped up in the span of an episode. But the characters are evolving, leaving fans to wonder if Alphy will make sense of his prophetic dream and come to terms with the hypocrisy of the faith he strongly believes in, or if Geordie will finally confront what’s holding him back in the comfort of his current position as both detective and husband.

But through it all, fans are rooting for these characters. They’ve followed the journey of Grantchester’s residents for over a decade, and I believe they’re rewarded for that devotion. Alongside gut-wrenching plot twists and disagreements between almost everyone, fans are still treated to callbacks from earlier seasons, a guest appearance from a MASTERPIECE favorite from another show and the beautiful English countryside.

From the small town to the vicarage, it’s a fond farewell to Grantchester in the best way.

And as we are given a glimpse into the future of Grantchester beyond the series, we hope for the best for our Grantchester family.

Or at the very least, a walk with a vicar and a detective who doesn’t hesitate to remind him that he’s a “sly dog.”

Season 11 of Grantchester premieres on GPB-TV and streaming on June 14 at 9 p.m. and will air for eight episodes.

Powerful Screenings Spark Impactful Community Conversations

T

his spring, GPB went into the community to organize events that offered opportunities for reflection and meaningful dialogue.

In March, we gathered at GPB Studios to honor Barbara Jordan through the film The Inquisitor. As community partners, D4 Women In Action and The Links, Incorporated Atlanta (GA) joined us for this event and were instrumental in making the night a success. They continue Jordan’s life’s work of uplifting communities through civic understanding, storytelling and the steadfast belief that every voice has the power to shape a more just and compassionate society.

We also visited Kennesaw at Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education for a screening and panel discussion of Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History. Following the film, we engaged in a discussion focused on Georgia’s special history of Black and Jewish collaboration, resilience and cultural interconnectedness—and explored how these stories continue to shape our communities today.

In April, we traveled to Dublin to show the film Make a Circle, a love letter to early educators and a rallying cry for a childcare system in crisis. We partnered with the Dublin-Laurens County Chamber Community Foundation to showcase work being done to increase the economic and social well‑being of parents as well as support economic development in the Upper Coastal Plain region.

We were thrilled to work with these amazing partners and help amplify their message throughout Georgia.

Inside GPB GPB Hosts “Bring Your Child to Work Day” and Promotes Marked! at Atlanta-Area Events

A

pril marked a busy month for GPB as we hosted our first-ever “Bring Your Child to Work Day” and participated in the annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival and Live Thrive Kids Day, where we featured Marked!, our production initiative

capturing Georgia’s role in the Revolutionary period.

“Bring Your Child to Work Day” treated the children of GPB employees to educational activities and tours of the radio and television studios that were all designed to help foster more of an understanding of their parents’ workplace and what’s going on behind the scenes when they are watching their favorite PBS KIDS shows on GPB. Marked! host Maiya May and producer Andrew Iden joined GPB at our tent at the 90th annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival to greet attendees and talk about the series as we shared clips before the digital premiere in April.

GPB also made our first appearance at Live Thrive Kids Day, a free, family-friendly event hosted by the Atlanta-based nonprofit Live Thrive. The event was designed to introduce environmental sustainability practices through hands-on, engaging activities. GPB encouraged sustainability with the use of recycled paper to create a special Marked! card matching game, where participants learned about pivotal Georgia characters in the American Revolution.
