Dear Friends,
Just a few weeks ago, I was honored to get to spend some time in England with a group of GPB donors. While there, we visited some iconic MASTERPIECE locations such as the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, home of author James Herriot and his classic stories featured in All Creatures Great and Small, Highclere Castle (forever Downton Abbey to millions of devoted fans) and the lovely Grantchester church featured in the eponymous program on Sunday evenings premiering its ninth season Sunday, June 16 at 9 p.m. on GPB. While seeing these unique and special locations was certainly a memorable highlight, what I will carry with me most is the deep and passionate discussions about GPB and the work we’re doing in communities across Georgia. I mean, what other television station can take you to another country to deepen your relationship with a show you love with others who feel just as passionate about it as you do? That, in itself, represents the powerful proposition of public broadcasting - we exist to connect you both physically and metaphorically. These GPB supporters had the opportunity to physically connect with these iconic places, but they also gained a connection with the programming that is uniquely provided through a public broadcasting station like GPB. If you ever feel the need to deepen your connection with GPB, never hesitate to reach out. There are always unique opportunities we can offer from premiere screenings to children’s events to travel excursions, all with the goal of connecting you to what you love. That’s our mission.
This month in GPB Next, in addition to Grantchester’s premiere, you can read about a series of film events around Wild Hope as part of GPB’s work in the community, as well as summer resources available to your children in the upcoming school vacation months. I’m also excited to share with you some changes coming to Morning Edition locally on the weekdays to offer you a better, deeper connection with news from around the state. GPB is doing so much!
Thanks for your continued support of the variety of unique connecting experiences we offer. And don’t worry, in addition to all these wonderful inperson opportunities, there is always a chance for that good old-fashioned connection with your television screen.
Warmly,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO

As the ninth season of the hit MASTERPIECE series Grantchester begins, it’s 1961 and life is good for Will and Geordie. The families are always together, from Sunday lunches to planning summer holidays. But when Will is approached with a life changing offer, can he leave Grantchester and Geordie behind?

This plot development comes as actor Tom Brittney, who has played the much-loved character Reverend Will Davenport since 2019, announces that this will be his last season so that can focus on new projects.
But as one door closes, another one opens and the village welcomes Rishi Nair (Hollyoaks, Count Abdulla) as the charismatic vicar, Alphy Kotteram. Reverend Alphy Kotteram has an instinctive distrust for authority and absolutely no desire to get involved in murder investigations. However, Alphy and Geordie (Robson Green) will discover they have a lot more in common than they first think, and Alphy will find that in Grantchester, murder is never far away.

GPB IN THE COMMUNITY
Wild Hope Inspires Georgians to Help the Environment
In celebration of Wild Hope, a series of short films that highlight the intrepid changemakers who are restoring our wild places and sparking new hope for the future of our planet, GPB has participated in community events that focus on what Georgians are doing to help the environment.
Most recently, in March of this year, GPB partnered with Science for Georgia and the Fruitful Community Foundation to find more examples of wild hope in the state. The Fruitful Community Foundation worked with Dekalb County to create climate resilient landscapes outside some of their public libraries. These landscape projects serve as an example of how organizations throughout a community can make their greenspaces more sustainable while still creating outdoor spaces for people to enjoy. You can learn more about the organization’s work at fruitfulcommunity.org.

Children learn more about the environment at CompassionCon.
Science for Georgia offers many resources that help build bridges between scientists and the public. During the event, they discussed ways that the public can create their own version of wild hope in their communities and offered advice to make real change. Science for Georgia offers many ongoing events, including Climate Survival Training and Georgia Science Junction that helps connect science to society. Visit scienceforgeorgia.org to learn about these events and more.
This past fall, GPB hosted the Environmental Hub area of CompassionCon, where attendees explored conservation successes from around the world and learned about fun and exciting ways to get involved in our community.
Tune in at 7 p.m. Wednesdays beginning June 12 to watch the broadcast of Wild Hope, or stream the entire series now on GPB Passport. You can find out more about community events featuring Georgia organizations inspired by the series at gpb.org/community.

ASO Presents: Carlos Simon Curates Explores
Eclecticism of Black Music Experience
Program Premieres June 21 During African American Music Appreciation Month
Composer Carlos Simon at the ASO.
First proclaimed by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, each June, African American Music Appreciation Month celebrates musical influences that comprise an essential part of our nation’s treasured cultural heritage.
As part of the programming available through GPB exploring African American music, ASO Presents: Carlos Simon Curates, will premiere Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. Simon, an Atlanta native and Morehouse College alum, felt called to make a program that reflects both the Black experience in music and his own journey as one of the premiere Black classical composers in the United States.
14 gpb next magazine Stream your favorite programs with GPB Passport - gpb.org/passport
Now composer-in-residence at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., Simon was discouraged from listening to music other than gospel when he was a child growing up in church. However, in his teenage years, he was exposed to broader examples of Black music, and this concert reflects his eclecticism.
“I hope the concept of this concert, or the blueprint, will be duplicated around the country, to show that it’s possible that we can have a concert that has spirituals, but yet opera arias, and that we can have a piece that’s contemporary, and still with the same message of unity and hope and of change and social justice,” Simon explained in an interview segment during ASO Presents: Carlos Simon Curates

The Lesser Known Signs of Alzheimer’s
with Ashley Varner, PHD, MBA, LCSW
To acknowledge Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, we asked Emory Healthcare Clinical Social Worker, Ashley Varner what are the lesser-known signs of Alzheimer’s and related dementias?
Many know that memory problems and a decline in thinking ability may be signs of Alzheimer’s. But there are others to be aware of. Such as:
Difficulty with familiar tasks, like driving to church or making a grocery list.
Confusion with time or place, such as not knowing the month, or how they got to a location.
Difficulty understanding images or words. These can make reading, driving, and conversing difficult.
Losing things and not being able to retrace their steps to find them.
Decreased judgement like mismanaging money or maintaining poor hygiene.
Changes in socialization and personality, like withdrawing from social activities or becoming uncharacteristically suspicious, depressed, or fearful.
If you or a loved one are exhibiting some of these signs, talk to your Primary Care Provider to see if a referral to Georgia Memory Net for accelerated diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and related dementias is the right next step.
Learn more about GMN referrals at GaMemoryNet.org/referral.

Become A GPB World Traveler and Enjoy Discounts on Transcendent Travel Tours Coming Fall 2025
Imagine going on a trip that showcases the shooting locations from some of your favorite shows on GPB. In April of this year, through our partnership with Transcendent Travel, an experience-based travel provider out of London, GPB supporters had the opportunity to take part in two different tours that provided a behind-the-scenes view of some of public broadcasting’s most popular series.
All Creatures - A Television Focused Tour of England, highlighted locales from the historic dockyards in Call the Midwife, to the picturesque village represented in Grantchester. Additionally, the tour included a visit to Chatsworth, home of the Duke of Devonshire and one of England’s finest country houses, walking tours of London and York, as well as a visit to the Yorkshire Dales, the picturesque home of James Herriot of All Creatures Great and Small.
The Great British Telly Tour of England offered visits to Winston Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms, a walking tour of Dorchester-on-Thames, the scenic location of Midsomer Murders, a tour of Highclere Castle, the grand home of the Crawley family from Downton Abbey, tours of Oxford and The Cotswolds as well as Bletchley Park, home of the WWII codebreakers.
If you missed these tours, GPB will be offering two trips in the fall of 2025. You can receive a substantial discount on these trips by becoming a GPB World Traveler.

This documentary shed light on an unknown tragic story about the abuse of black children for the first time, accurately detailing how young people in the small rural town of Americus, Georgia got involved in a civil rights demonstration against a local theater. After being arrested, thirtytwo girls were isolated and imprisoned in a deserted civil war era prison for forty-five days. It features interviews with many of the surviving women who open up for the first time about what happened that painful summer of 1963 and how their lives changed. It also features interviews with two civil rights icons, Congressman John Lewis and Julian Bond, who not only remember the incident, but reflected passionately and put into historical perspective the plight of the young girls.

POV: KING COAL
Monday, June 24 at 11 PM
King Coal, through the personal memories of a 4th generation coal miner’s daughter, meditates on the complex history and future of the coal industry, the communities it has shaped, and the myths it has created. Filmed in Central Appalachia, the film documents the cultural roots of coal and its waning impact over a sector of American life, while also making space for a dream of the future to emerge.
