PBS KIDS OFFERS A SUMMER OF POSSIBILITIES

by GPB CEO Teya Ryan

As noted in this month’s GPB Education section, we’re proud to provide families and educators with Getting Ready guides and videos that prepare kids to head back to school in the coming months.

And, in addition to these great resources from GPB, you can also find a variety of free materials from PBS KIDS that will spark your child’s curiosity and creativity with hands-on activities, tips and games around different themes supporting literacy, math, science and life skills.

In the meantime, PBS KIDS offers these tips to help keep your kids excited about learning this season:

Ask lots of questions.

• Encourage your kids to participate in conversations by asking them questions like:

“Why do you think that happened? What will happen next?

Encourage kids to search for answers.

• When your children ask you

“why?” see if you can work together to figure out what they need to know or do to find the answer.

Try something new.

• Summer is a great time to try new things like reading a new kind of book, tasting a new food or exploring a new park.

Just have fun.

• Summertime comes along only once a year, so make sure to have fun while you’re learning. My Summer Checklist

The much-beloved series Downton Abbey returned to the big screen with its second theatrical feature, Downton Abbey: A New Era in May, and GPB hosted a special evening of advance screenings at Atlanta’s AMC Phipps Plaza 14. Downton Abbey devotees had the opportunity to mingle with fellow fans at an exclusive Saks Fifth Avenue shopping event and reception fit for the Crawleys, where they also received a copy of the hardcover book, Downton Abbey: A New Era: The Official Film Companion, in advance of its publication.

Downton Abbey: A New Era, the sequel to the 2019 feature film, Downton Abbey, reunites the beloved cast as they journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.
