iving secret, unseen lives, plants are often overlooked. Yet they are as aggressive, competitive and dramatic as animals — locked in life-and-death struggles for food and light, taking part in fierce battles for territory and
desperately trying to reproduce and scatter their young. Surprisingly social, they communicate with each other, care for their young and help the weak and injured. They can plan, they can count — and they can remember. The Green Planet, a new five-part documentary series hosted by Sir David Attenborough, travels the globe, from deserts to mountains, from rainforests to the frozen north, to present a fresh understanding of how plants live their lives.

Thermal cameras, macro frame-stacking, ultra-high-speed cameras and the latest developments in microscopy reveal the lives of plants and their incredible beauty.

Biello began his radio career at WHQR in Wilmington, North Carolina in 2007, serving first as a newsroom intern and then as host of WHQR’s Morning Edition. From there, he became a producer, announcer and host of Weekend Edition Saturday at Vermont Public Radio. In addition to hosting All Things Considered for New Hampshire Public Radio, Biello hosted The Weekly New Hampshire News Roundup, Writers on a New England Stage and The Bookshelf from NHPR. “GPB has demonstrated a commitment to excellence that I find admirable,” said Biello. “I consider myself lucky to be part of this talented team of journalists. The news and information you hear through GPB is a key part of a healthy democracy. I’m looking forward to continuing my career with this essential institution.” Biello holds an MFA in Fiction from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a BFA in Creative Writing from the University of Maine at Farmington.

theatrical feature, Downton Abbey: A New Era in May, and GPB hosted a special evening of advance screenings at Atlanta’s AMC Phipps Plaza 14. Downton Abbey devotees had the opportunity to mingle with fellow fans at an exclusive Saks Fifth Avenue shopping event and reception fit for the Crawleys, where they also received a copy of the hardcover book, Downton Abbey: A New Era: The Official Film Companion, in advance of its publication. Downton Abbey: A New Era, the sequel to the 2019 feature film, Downton Abbey, reunites the beloved cast as they journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa. ARTHUR BRINGS JOY TO THE COLUMBUS CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL AND COMPASSIONCON
A
rthur, the star of television’s longestrunning children’s animated series and everyone’s favorite aardvark, joined GPB
for two events in May, including the Columbus Children’s Book Festival and CompassionCon. The weekday PBS Kids series Arthur, based on the bestselling books by Marc Brown, celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year and has touched audiences around the world with its heartfelt and humorous stories about family, friends and the challenges of growing up. Brown, one of the nation’s most acclaimed authors and illustrators for children, joined Arthur and GPB staff members for the Columbus Children’s Book Festival, hosted by the Columbus Public Library. Arthur’s next stop with GPB was CompassionCon, an outdoor festival in Grant Park hosted by Compassionate Atlanta, a non-profit which seeks to raise awareness about the benefits of compassionate action throughout the Greater Atlanta area. MONDAY, JULY 4, 7 PM A Night of Georgia Music, a concert recorded at Macon’s historic Grand Opera House showcases some of the Peach State’s most iconic songs, headlined by three of Georgia’s most well-known musicians. R.E.M. founding member and Macon native Mike Mills, along with students from Mercer University’s Robert McDuffie Center for Strings and its founder, internationally renowned violin soloist and Macon native Robert McDuffie, are joined by former Allman Brothers Band member and current Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell for this electrifying performance. 96-HOUR OPERA PROJECT
HIGHLIGHTS ATLANTA OPERA’S UNIQUE COMPETITION
MONDAY, JULY 11 - WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 7 PM This three-night broadcast Monday, July 11 - Wednesday, July 13 at 7 p.m. captures The 96-Hour Opera Project, a composition showcase and competition launched by The Atlanta Opera, in which teams of composers and librettists will create completely new and compelling 10-minute operas. The competition is designed specifically for composers and librettists from historically underrepresented communities. The 96-hour project is only open to those who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, Asian-American, Pacific Islander, Arab-American, Latin-American or other communities of color, including those artists from outside the US. Each creative team has been paired with a story drawn from Georgia’s past and present based on materials provided by this year’s Stories that Resonate partners, representative nonprofit organizations with storytelling at their core, including The Atlanta History Center and The Center for Civil and Human Rights.
