A Contemporary Australian Detective Drama starring Lucy Lawless Premieres Friday, July 12
with Stephanie Vyverberg, APRN, NP-C
Thousands of Georgians say they’ve noticed signs of memory loss or cognitive impairment but haven’t received a diagnosis for those symptoms. We asked Emory Cognitive Neurology Program Director of Patient Centered Integrations and Nurse Practitioner, Stephanie Vyverberg, to share her reasons for Georgians to get a diagnosis as soon as possible.
First, there are medical benefits to early diagnosis. People who get diagnosed early may be eligible for new treatments or even participate in clinical trials. Diagnosis can also encourage lifestyle changes that may help preserve cognitive function.
Early diagnosis can save money. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, if all Americans were diagnosed early it would collectively save around $7 trillion* in health and long-term care costs.
Earlier diagnosis allows more time to plan, and can also help families connect with support services in your area to lessen their collective care burden.
There are emotional benefits to early diagnosis too—knowing the cause can lessen anxiety about symptoms, and give families an opportunity to make the most of their time together. 1 2 3 4
To sum up, if you’re noticing symptoms— don’t wait. Talk to your Primary Care Physician and ask if an appointment with Georgia Memory Net for diagnosis is appropriate. You can learn more about referrals at GaMemoryNet.org/referral.

Dear Friends,
Well, it’s the middle of summer, and here at GPB we’re in the middle of so many wonderful things. While traditionally summertime is a time to slow down and relax a bit, we like to go against that trend to ensure that your much-deserved downtime is filled with wonderful content and opportunities to engage with us! This month, in addition to learning about the new 10-part Australian drama series My Life is Murder, we’ll keep you up to date with some of the innovative work we’re doing in education by highlighting the student winners of our recent Georgia NASEF FarmCraft® 2024 competition. And summer is a great time to be out and about, so we’ll share plans for a unique community engagement opportunity on Tybee Island next month.
There is always so much happening at GPB. As we reach the end of our budget year, I do want to take an opportunity to thank you for your continued support. Know that the dollars you give do more than provide entertainment. They go deeper to provide educational opportunities, civil conversations, unbiased news and so much more. Thank you for entrusting your investment in GPB.
Please, do your best to stay cool on these long, hot days, and know that when you need to cool off, GPB will always be there for you with something to make you reflect, smile and think!
Warmly,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO
Actress Lucy Lawless trades in the chakram, the signature weapon she used against villains as the title character in the popular series Xena: Warrior Princess, for a match of wits in My Life is Murder. The contemporary Australian detective drama stars Lawless as retired cop Alexa Crowe and airs Fridays, at 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. July 12 – August 9. Although she’s officially retired, her old boss Kieran (Bernard Curry, Once Upon a Time) regularly asks for her insight on cold cases. Whether Alexa wants to or not, she can’t seem to stop solving crime.
“The Boyfriend Experience”
Retired detective Alexa Crowe is intent on one goal—fixing her professional-grade, German bread maker. Then her former boss, Kieran, contacts her for help on an unsolved case: a successful businesswoman who plunged to her death from the 19th-floor balcony of a male escort’s apartment.
“The Locked Room”
Kieran brings Alexa another cold case— a family man named Alan Gillespie was shot dead in a motel room, with the windows and door locked from the inside and the security chain in place.
“Lividity in Lycra”
When the CFO of a hospitality empire dies on a cycling ride with friends, the coroner rules it death by misadventure. But Kieran is suspicious and asks Alexa to look into it.
“Can’t Stand the Heat”
Culinary student Ivan Zhang was found dead in the school’s kitchen after slipping on oil and smacking his head. However, Kieran considers the scene suspicious.
“Feet of Clay”
A year ago, beautiful young PR assistant Christina Cortez was killed in a hit-and-run by a drunk driver who turned herself in a few days later. Kieran wants to know who sent Christina the mysterious message that prompted her to be at that fatal spot in the first place.
“Another Bloody Podcast”
When a true-crime podcast blames Kieran for the lack of progress on an investigation into the killing of a young gay man, Alexa is determined to help him out.
“Old School”
Alexa revisits her younger days after her beloved high school teacher dies. Acting on Kieran’s hunch that it wasn’t an accident, Alexa investigates the new principal - who also happens to be her old classmate.
“Remains to Be Seen”
While jogging one morning, Alexa collapses. As she confronts her mortality, Kieran takes the opportunity to hand her the case of Patrick Mandel, a gambling addict found buried in an already occupied grave.
“Fake Empire”
When Kieran asks Alexa for help with the unsolved murder of a nurse, she declines until he mentions the involvement of clairvoyant Chloe Angel, who knows details about the case not released to the public.
“Mirror, Mirror”
As Alexa’s birthday approaches, Kieran gives her an early present: the case of a plastic surgeon obsessed with getting her own cosmetic procedures.
We begin our day with GPB radio, and listen, off and on, throughout the day and evening. My car radio is also tuned to 89.7FM. Your programs are a vital part of our family’s daily life and education! We don’t watch much television, but when we do, we turn first to GPB. We appreciate you, and feel honored to support the vital service GPB provides!
I absolutely love GPB. In today’s world, it’s wonderful to know that you can truly get good clean programs on television. I am inspired to support GPB to ensure that Public Media continues with the quality programs I have gotten accustomed to. What’s more amazing is there is always something available and suitable for all ages!
LISTEN TO GPB RADIO
GPB is dedicated to serving families and children with educational resources that can be used in K-12 classrooms, as well as spaces outside of school. Parents and caregivers have been turning to PBS KIDS on GPB for years as a trusted source for stories and advice on raising kind, caring and resilient children.
Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street, has been at the forefront of this work for more than 50 years. Generations of children have grown up watching Sesame Street, learning everything from the basics of ABCs and 123s to creative problem-solving and important social-emotional concepts.
This summer, GPB is pleased to host a series of virtual screenings of the latest docuseries from our friends at Sesame Workshop, Through Our Eyes. Journey into the lives of American families from the perspective of children themselves. Through Our Eyes follows kids as they navigate formidable challenges – from parental incarceration to homelessness, climate displacement to caring for wounded military parents. We also meet kids who are facing and fighting racism, promoting cultural preservation and building the future they wish to inhabit.

Four teams of Georgia NASEF Farmcraft® 2024 winners were honored with an awards ceremony and live-streamed event on May 2 at Skillshot Media studios in Atlanta.
GPB collaborated with the Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF) and the U.S. Department of State, on the free, engaging STEAM-based program that teaches the challenges faced by agricultural producers and distributors in Georgia and around the world in a custom Minecraft game. The program was open to teams in grades 3-12.
Georgia NASEF Farmcraft® 2024 began this past February with preseason challenges, in which lessons plans are provided to educators that reinforce the learning objectives of the program and can be integrated into curriculum throughout the year. The regular season began in March, and Minecraft Education Edition was provided free to all participants throughout the course of the program.
This year’s program focused on the impact of digital technology on agricultural productivity, asking the question “How do you grow more with less?” Many of the agricultural productivity increases in the last few decades have directly resulted from the adaptation and adoption of digital technologies to farming.
GPB worked with partners at Georgia Forestry Foundation, Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, and others to design Georgia-specific pre-season challenges within the standard Minecraft game. Participants used their problem-solving and creativity to complete the three pre-season challenges related to forestry, vertical farming and aquaponics, and regenerative agriculture. Each pre-season challenge has an educator guide for classroom implementation.

GPB Hosts Tybee Island Event in
If you’ve been watching Hope in the Water, the three-part nature docuseries that began airing on GPB June 19 featuring environmental enthusiasts Shallene Woodley, Martha Stewart and Baratunde Thurston, you may be wondering how Georgia is working toward a sustainable future for the planet.
Though Hope in the Water airs its last episode July 3, Georgia has plenty of stories to inspire viewers, including those featured on A Fork in the Road, GPB’s popular series with a companion podcast that are each hosted by David Zelski.
(From L - R) Environmental Enthusiasts Shailene Woodley, Martha Stewart and Baratunde Thurston reveal hidden underworlds jeopardized by climate change, irresponsible fishing and exploitation and habitat destruction, in Hope In The Water.
In August, David will be part of an event hosted by GPB on Tybee Island featuring some of the local people on the Georgia coast who are contributing to the region’s success, including Bryan Fluech, Associate Director of Extension at the UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant.
The mission of the Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is to improve the environmental, social and economic health of the Georgia coast through research, education and extension. One of the ways they do this is through their Oyster Hatchery, which is expected to revive the once-thriving oyster industry in Georgia.
A Fork in the Road has profiled many of the farmers, fishers and chefs who work with these oysters and other coastal delicacies in several episodes, including, “Ocean Fresh,” “Coastal Treasures” and “Sauce and the Sea.”
Visit gpb.org/community to find out how you can attend the Tybee Island event and learn more about the participants, including those featured in A Fork in the Road.

This exhilarating period drama follows a British family who runs a hotel for upper class travelers on the magical Italian Riviera during the glamorous ‘Roaring 20s’ but also under the dark cloud of Fascist Italy.
Many Georgians notice the symptoms of Alzheimer’s or related dementia and do nothing about it. But an early diagnosis can also lead to more effective treatments, additional support for the person with Alzheimer’s and their loves ones, and access to clinical trials.
If you’ve noticed signs of memory loss or cognitive decline, don’t wait. Make with your Primary Care Physician and tell them about your symptoms. They may recommend an appointment with Georgia Memory Net for an accelerated, accurate diagnosis.
