When we launched in July 2020 as GPB Encore, it was in response to what you’ve told us about your desire for more GPB programming information.

I want to thank our publishing partner Encore Atlanta for helping us first launch last year under its brand. It was an ambitious effort during a pandemic, but one that we feel was crucial to help us stay connected in a time when we were not able to enjoy face-to-face interactions with you as our supporters.

As our arts and entertainment community returns to regular activities this year, Encore Atlanta will focus on its core mission as the performing arts magazine and program in Atlanta, providing news, stories, and event information, while GPB will conduct all publishing operations for GPB Next.

It is with a sense of hope and excitement that we’ve chosen the name GPB Next, as it represents our pledge to move forward from a trying year and challenge ourselves as an organization to consistently produce innovative content and resources across all our platforms.

A CAPITOL FOURTH AMERICA’S NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

elebrate our country’s 245th birthday with a star-studded musical spectacular! The 41st edition of America’s Independence Day celebration returns with hosts two-time Emmy Award-nominated actor John Stamos and multi-platinum recording artist and star of television, film and the Broadway stage, Vanessa Williams.

The show has become a national tradition with its dazzling fireworks display over the iconic Washington D. C. skyline.

Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional live concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol will not take place. The special presentation will however be hosted live from Washington D.C., featuring all-new pre-taped performances by top stars from pop, country, R & B, classical and Broadway, including Georgia’s own Gladys Knight, Alan Jackson and Jennifer Nettles.

Live coverage of the fireworks during the broadcast will be captured by multiple cameras stationed around the city.

UNG graduate Anita Renfroe, of Stone Mountain, won a Fulbright award that took her to Malaysia in 2017. A member of UNG’s Corps of Cadets, Renfroe earned a degree in Arabic language and literature and numerous highly competitive scholarships, including the opportunity to study for a year in Morocco.

GPB RADIO A MARTINEZ JOINS NPR’S MORNING EDITION

A

new voice comes to NPR this month as A Martínez joins Rachel Martin, Noel King and Steve Inskeep as the fourth host of Morning Edition and Up First, the popular daily news podcast that highlights the top three stories listeners need to start their day. He fills the vacancy in the host lineup that was left after David Greene’s departure in 2020.

Martínez has hosted Take Two at Southern California Public Radio (KPCC) in Los Angeles since 2012. Before that, he was a familiar voice to sports-talk radio listeners in Los Angeles as host of 710 KSPN’s In the Zone. During his tenure, Take Two has created important forums on the air and through live events that have elevated the voices and perspectives of Angelenos, and provided coverage of the region’s challenges including homelessness, climate change and systemic disparities in health and education.

ach year, I look forward to attending the PBS Annual Meeting, an event that gives me the opportunity to meet with public media station colleagues from across the country to share ideas and preview upcoming programming.

Last year’s conference was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, but that didn’t deter anyone from public media’s core mission - to produce and deliver thoughtful content – from educational programs to popular dramas to trusted news – that’s available to everyone.

STAKEHOLDERS REPORT 2021 HIGHLIGHTS MOST TRUSTED INSTITUTION For the 18th year in a row, Americans named PBS the “most trusted institution” in a nationwide survey, outscoring government institutions and other media sources in both trust and value.

#1 FOR EDUCATIONAL MEDIA PBS KIDS was ranked as the #1 educational media brand for children compared with other children’s media providers, including Disney +, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.

TAX DOLLARS AT WORK 69% of respondents call PBS a “good” or “excellent” use of tax dollars, falling only behind the country’s military defense (77 %) and oversight of food and drug safety (73 %).

SERVING THE COMMUNITY PBS and member stations serve over 100 million people per month through programming broadcasts, more than 32 million people per month on PBS’s site and apps, and over 51 million viewers per month on social media.

QUALITY KIDS PROGRAMMING More than 60% of all kids age 2-8 – or 16 million children – watch PBS on local stations yearly. PBS KIDS reaches 13.6 million monthly users and shares 359 million monthly streams across station branded digital platforms.

KIDS CONTENT 24/7 Overall, in 2020, PBS KIDS video content was streamed 4.71 billion times, up 32 percent from the previous year.

GPB DONOR SPOTLIGHT

K

athleen Olive never met a musical keyboard she didn’t like. This is evident from the memories her sister Tricia Colburn shares as she reflects on Ms. Olive, a lifelong lover of the arts and public media who succumbed to a fourth battle with cancer last year.

Ms. Olive’s donation to GPB through our Planned Giving initiative helps assure that others have the exposure and opportunity to participate in the arts she felt everyone deserves, and this month, we’re honoring her memory.

“From the time we were young kids to the day she died, her solace, her joy, her problem solving, as well as her relaxation and sanity were sourced from her fingers on the keys of a piano, organ, or keyboard,” said Ms. Colburn. “Playing and performing brought her peace and joy, and she magically shared it wherever she went.”

At a young age, the sisters began taking piano lessons. It was Ms. Olive, however, who reveled in the exercise. As Ms. Colburn recalls, she would show up while she was practicing and take over the keyboard, even making well-placed mistakes so their mother would not know that it was her playing instead of her younger sister.

Though she only charged Ms. Colburn a dime for these “performances,” Ms. Olive’s talent would go on to earn her a spot at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music and a rewarding career that included stints as a minister of music and teacher to hundreds of music students over the years. She also generously shared her gift through organizing and playing fundraisers for various causes.
