The FREE Annual Wellness Visit
Georgians over 65 are eligible

The Annual Wellness Visit, or AWV, is a non-invasive visit with your Primary Care Provider’s practice that’s free to most Medicare-eligible Georgians over 65. The appointment is designed to assess future health risks and create a personal prevention plan.

Georgia Memory Net recommends that every eligible Georgian over the age of 65 takes advantage of their free Annual Wellness Visit. We especially recommend the AWV for those who may be experiencing memory challenges. Part of the AWV looks at memory and cognition, and can reveal symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.
If signs of Alzheimer’s are found, your healthcare professional may recommend an appointment with Georgia Memory Net for an accelerated diagnosis and treatment plan, as well as connection to support organizations in your area. Visit GaMemoryNet.org/referrals to learn more about getting a referral to a GMN Memory Assessment Clinic.

Dear Friends,
Happy July! For many of us, summertime is about slowing down just a bit. Hot summer days and evenings recall memories of outdoor barbecues, hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill, fireworks and all the Americana that comes along with it. But July means something else in the nonprofit world. It’s when the fiscal year begins, and budgets change over, issuing a whole new challenge for the year ahead. And the next year is certainly a challenge for us. The rising dues to PBS and NPR paired with a smaller state appropriation this year means that individual giving and YOUR support of GPB are the catalysts to our success.
We are so fortunate to have the support of the state of Georgia to provide muchneeded funding for our facilities - including the many towers and buildings across the state, as well as the equipment needed to ensure that GPB remains on air 24 hours a day to serve the people who depend on us. Additionally, state funding helps us retain a smart and capable engineering team, the infrastructure needed to run our business and our all-important education initiatives that influence the lives of students and teachers every day.
Where do you come in? Well, when I am asked that question, I generally answer with another question – What do you love about GPB? For most of you, the answers would range from MASTERPIECE to PBS Newshour, NOVA and NATURE to NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered to GPB’s own original productions such as Georgia Outdoors or our local news content. If you answered similarly, guess what? It’s all funded by YOU! Your dollars of support help keep everything you love and enjoy on GPB TV and Radio. So, in a year that is sure to be a challenge, I hope you’ll consider a little something extra for GPB. Even five dollars a month makes an enormous difference. Importantly, I know that together we can rise to the challenge in the year ahead and keep GPB strong for the many varied communities we serve across the state and beyond. Why? Because we must!
Warmest regards,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and Interim CEO

SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS
Writers from the Worlds of Literature, Music, Film and Television Explore Southern Identity

The American South is known for its boundless creativity, absorbing personalities and evocative landscapes. SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS, a new three-episode series premiering July 18, follows some of the region’s most compelling and influential contemporary creators to the places they call home and explores how these communities have fertilized the stories they tell in books, songs, poems, plays and on screens large and small.
SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS traverses the South, from the mountains of Appalachia to the Gulf of Mexico. The series reveals a vivid patchwork of diverse American stories that celebrate the resilience and joy of Southern people and the innate talents of the region’s writers.
“SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS comes from our desire, as native Southerners, to show the South in an authentic light.”
Arkansas PBS CEO, Courtney Pledger
Among the featured creatives are some of the most recognized storytellers from the worlds of literature, music, television and film, including novelists Jesmyn Ward, Angie Thomas and David Joy; country music artist Lyle Lovett; poet and memoirist Natasha Trethewey; poet Jericho Brown; musician/songwriter, screenwriter and actor Billy Bob Thornton; singer-songwriters Brittany Howard, Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Thao Nguyen and Adia Victoria; songwriter and actress Mary Steenburgen, screenwriter Qui Nguyen; author and culinary historian Michael Twitty; and Stranger Things series creators, Matt and Ross Duffer.

SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS was created by filmmaker Craig Renaud and Arkansas PBS CEO, Courtney Pledger. “SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS comes from our desire, as native Southerners, to show the South in an authentic light,” says Pledger. “And we can think of no better way to do that than through the experiences of the region’s writers and creators who are able to engage us, move us and take us to a deeper understanding of such a dynamic place and its people.”

SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS featured poet, Jericho Brown, is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Creative Writing and the Director of the Creative Writing Program at Emory University in Atlanta. He is also the author of the collection, The Tradition (2019), which was a finalist for the 2019 National Book Award and the winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. His poems have appeared in Buzzfeed, The Nation, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New Republic and TIME, among other publications.

Amplify Military Voices with StoryCorps

Have you heard of a “driveway moment”? It’s a term broadcast professionals use to label a compelling story that keeps you glued to the radio in a parked car long after you’ve made it to your destination. There’s no denying that stories connect us and stir up emotions within us unlike most things can.
At GPB, we’re committed to sharing these compelling stories. This summer, we are partnering with StoryCorps to highlight the experiences of Georgian veterans, service members and military families through the Military Voices initiative. In sharing their stories, we hope to provide a platform to honor their voices, amplify their experiences and let them know that we – as a nation – are listening.
If you or a service member you know has a proud moment, defining memory or lesson from a military experience to share, we’d love to invite them to an upcoming virtual or in-person recording.
Things Every Georgian Should Know About the Annual Wellness Visit
The Annual Wellness Visit is a way older Georgians, and their Primary Care Providers, can monitor their health and work to prevent future illness. We asked Georgia Memory Net’s Dr. Ted Johnson to share the five things every Georgian should know about the Annual Wellness Visit:

1. What is the Annual Wellness Visit?
An Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) is a check-up for seniors that Medicare covers each year. During the visit, your provider reviews your medical history, checks your current health, and makes a prevention plan to help you stay healthy.
2. Who qualifies?
You must have Medicare, not be in a hospital, and be over 65 years of age. If you receive other services or treatments during the visit Medicare may charge a fee. Before getting any additional services, talk to your primary care provider about what is covered and any potential costs.
3. What is the Mini-Cog?
The Mini-Cog test is part of the AWV that checks a person's thinking ability. It only takes a few minutes and can help detect early signs of dementia or Alzheimer's disease. However, it's not a diagnosis, and further testing may be necessary to confirm any cognitive impairment.
4.
What’s next if dementia symptoms are found?
If your provider believes you’re showing signs of dementia, Georgia Memory Net (GMN) is available to help with accurate and accelerated diagnostic services. If diagnosed, GMN specialists will develop a treatment plan for you based on your needs, and you can work with your primary care provider to help manage your symptoms and maintain your quality of life.
5. How do I find info on referrals to GMN?
If you’re worried about your memory or thinking skills, ask your primary care provider to refer you to Georgia Memory Net. You can get information for patients and providers at gamemorynet.org.
Georgia’s Leanna Pierre Brings Traditional Caribbean Cuisine with a Twist of Southern

Norcross resident, Leanna Pierre, laughed as she recalled the conversation she had with her supervisor when she asked him for time off to participate in Season 2 of The Great American Recipe. “Who walks into their boss’ office and says, ‘I may need to leave for up to three weeks to film this TV show, but I can’t talk about it’?”
But as an attorney, Pierre undoubtedly made a compelling case and, to our viewer’s delight, participated in the second season, which premiered on GPB on June 19.
Featuring home cooks from across the country as contestants, The Great American Recipe celebrates the multiculturalism that makes American food unique and iconic, from family favorites passed down through generations to internationally influenced recipes. Each week, the contestants are judged on different cooking challenges and face elimination if they have the judges’ least favored dish. The series airs Mondays at 9 p.m., and the competition culminates with the selection of the winner during the finale on August 7.
-Leanna Pierre“Food is one of those great unifiers across culture, place, race and time.”
In addition to her day job as an attorney, Pierre is a wife, mother, food blogger, world traveler and proud daughter of Caribbean-born parents. Her mother, Pat, and paternal grandmother, Felis, started teaching her how to cook at the age of eight. Today, her cooking style is an eclectic mixture of traditional Caribbean cuisine from their influences, with a twist of “southern comfort” that was developed over her 15 years as an Atlanta resident.
Pierre’s journey as a contestant on The Great American Recipe began when her recipe blog, Mrs. Island Breeze, caught the attention of a casting agent. You can view it at mrsislandbreeze.com. Her signature and fan-favorite dish, Caribbean Stewed Chicken with allspice and fresh thyme, “captures so many different parts of who I am,” Pierre explains. “Both of my parents are from Barbados, so I’m a first-generation American. The flavors bring me back to that special connection I have in the kitchen with my mom and grandma.”

Pierre believes great food plays a powerful role in bringing people from all walks of life together. “Food is one of those great unifiers across culture, place, race and time,” she says.
Tune in Mondays at 9 p.m. to see how Pierre fares with her fellow contestants during The Great American Recipe and join the conversation on social media at @gpbmedia.
