All Creatures Great and Small Returns for Season 2 on MASTERPIECE Sunday, January 9 by Mandy Wilson The premiere season of All Creatures Great and Small was one of PBS’s biggest hits of 2021, with Vogue declaring “A visit to the fields, farms, and pubs of the faraway English countryside feels … like just what the doctor ordered.” Based on James Herriot’s beloved bestselling novels about a young vet and his surrogate family in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales of the 1930s, the series returns for a second season of heartwarming and humorous stories on MASTERPIECE Sundays at 9 p.m. January 9 – February 20. Nicholas Ralph (The Most Reluctant Convert) returns as James Herriot, a young vet from Scotland who moves to Yorkshire to take a job in a local veterinary practice in the farming town of Darrowby.

As season two opens, James returns from Glasgow where he has been visiting his parents for Easter. While there he is offered a job at a modern local veterinary practice and must decide between staying home in Glasgow with his elderly parents or returning to his new life in Yorkshire. GPB EDUCATION PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST LAUNCHES JANUARY 17
Winners Will Receive a Prize Pack and Be Featured on GPB’s Website
R
eady, set, write! Beginning January 17, GPB invites Georgia students in kindergarten through third grade to create a great story, illustrate it and enter the PBS KIDS Writers Contest.
The deadline for submissions this year is April 15. Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry, or prose and will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations. Winners will receive a prize pack and their stories will be featured on gpb.org. The contest is supported by a robust set of resources for children, families and teachers, including activity sheets and checklists to inspire children during the brainstorming process.

CEO SPOTLIGHT by GPB CEO Teya Ryan It’s a new year! I welcome 2022 because I know there are going to be so many great programs and events GPB will be bringing to you this year. In the last few years, we have grown GPB radio into a huge footprint of 19 stations across Georgia that have transformed GPB’s newsroom into a multi-bureau, all-platform operation. With technology and the pace of world, national and state events affording us with both opportunities and challenges, we’ve become Georgia’s premier source for trusted and respected news through our work with NPR and the journalistic skills of our reporters across the state. Recognized consistently with honors including accolades from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, Atlanta Press Club and most recently the Edward R. Murrow Awards, we’ve continued to elevate our radio content that is award winning news. Growth means change, and with that I’d like to offer my congratulations and thanks to someone who has been a vital part of the GPB News team for 15 years. Rickey Bevington has served as a leader both on and off the airwaves, including hosting Ask the Mayor with Atlanta’s Keisha Lance Bottoms and interviewing public figures including former President Jimmy Carter, former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams among others. Rickey has served GPB News as both Senior Correspondent, news director and most recently, the host of All Things Considered. In recent years, Rickey has studied and become very engaged in international policy through her work as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations’ Local Journalists Initiative, the German Marshall Fund, Climate Action Women, the French American Foundation and the Georgia Council for International Visitors among other organizations. Her passion has led to a new position as President of the World Affairs Council in Atlanta, a nonpartisan membership organization Rickey Bevington that provides a forum for informed discussion of global affairs that impact metro Atlanta. It is affiliated with Georgia State University, the J. Mack Robinson College of Business and the World Affairs Council of America. Though her voice will be missed at GPB, I’m grateful for the lasting impact Rickey’s work will have and pledge a continued commitment to quality journalism as you our donors generously make possible. PLANET PRESCRIPTION EVENTS ADDRESS CLIMATE ISSUES The COVID-19 crisis is brutally showing us how vulnerable we are to existential threats. There is an unconnected pandemic sweeping the planet – health impacts from air pollution and the climate crisis. But we have the prescription – listening to science and stories, while making our voices heard can create a healthier planet for all of us. Join us for a virtual Planet Prescription screening event on January 11 during which we will listen to stories from health professionals as they witness how the air pollution and climate crisis are impacting human health, especially children’s health and the communities impacted most by racial injustice. On January 18 we will host a follow-up conversation focused on Eco-Grief: Coping with the Emotional Impacts of Climate Change. Climate change is increasingly recognized to pose a variety of threats to human health, including mental health and well-being. Guests from Active Hope and Georgia Interfaith Power and Light will share coping mechanisms and actionable steps we can take individually to care for the planet and for ourselves.

HOME DIAGNOSIS PREMIERES ON GPB SATURDAY, JANUARY 8 AT 10 AM Dubbed This Old House meets CSI, Home Diagnosis is the first program ever dedicated to promoting measured home performance while highlighting best practices for home improvements/high performance building proven through diagnostics. Led by home performance experts Corbett and Grace Lunsford, the series features the couple as they travel the nation in their high-performance tiny house, #TinyLab. Along the way, they meet with homeowners to diagnose their mystery problems and prescribe real solutions to help them prove their home is a safe, healthy, comfortable place as well as informing viewers on how these lessons can apply in their homes as well.

JANUARY 15 BIG PICTURE: Performance vs. Energy Efficiency Indoor Air Quality requires understanding ventilation and air tightness targets, and with low income weatherization and government programs pushing for EE, the origin of the ‘energy audit’ is exposed as good at heart but inconsistent with building codes, and possibly harmful for the home’s occupants.
JANUARY 22 DESTRUCTION: Water is Everywhere Moisture is a central instigator of chemistry and with a focus on drainage, leaks, flooding, mold, restoration, humidity, using humidity to flush homes and finding ways to control it. In this dramedy set in the 1960s, high-flying Delhi graduate Dr. Prem Sharma (Sanjeev Bhaskar – Unforgotten) replaces a South Wales coal-mining village’s local doctor. He and his wife, Kamini (Ayesha Dharker – Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones), have eschewed a glamorous lifestyle in London for the sleepy Welsh village, a fact that the regal Kamini does not let her husband forget.
