Dear Friend, Welcome to February! It’s hard to believe that we’ve already made it into the second month of 2024. I hope that, so far, your new year has gotten off to a great start. Here at GPB we’re in full swing. In addition to special programming in commemoration of Black History Month, GPB will bring you tons of exciting premieres this month from Henry Louis Gates, Jr. to MASTERPIECE! And, on the organizational front, we’ve just started a months-long process of strategic planning. The future of GPB is bright, but it is important that we, as a company, all know exactly what it will be. When that process is finished later this year, we’ll be re-launching the iconic and beloved brand of GPB, so stay tuned for what that will look like. One important first step in this process is a deep dive into audience research. It’s important that we hear from you about what you want to see at GPB. Together, we can all build an exciting future for this multi-faceted multimedia company. One thing is for certain – GPB will continue to serve with YOU first in mind. Gospel is more than the soundtrack of the African American experience, “it’s the beating heart and soul,” said Gates. “From the Great Migration to today, the history of Black gospel music and preaching is one of constant movement, and it’s long been a dream of mine to bring it to public television. We’re blessed to have such outstanding partners in delivering this series and concert at a time in our nation when the need for Gospel’s transcendent, healing powers is so great.” Throughout its four hours, GOSPEL gives a look at the history of Black religious music and preaching, showcasing the symbiotic relationship of words and song present in any Black church. The series examines the origin of Black gospel music, which blended the sacred spirituals with the blues tradition and soared to new heights during the Great Migration.

An Interview with Local Expert Tammy Ozier
A
udiences everywhere have been enjoying the mysteries, surprises and revelations unearthed by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the Finding Your Roots research team for years, and the current season 10, which began
last month, does not disappoint. Mixing cutting-edge DNA research and old-school genealogical sleuthing, Finding Your Roots uncovers long-buried secrets, hidden identities, and lost ancestors. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the curtain pulled back on celebrities including Alanis Morissette and LeVar Burton. If the show has left you curious to do your own genealogy research, but you’re not sure where to get started, you’re in luck. To deep dive into the in’s and out’s of uncovering exciting truths in genealogy research, we checked in with local expert Tammy Ozier, former President of the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the AfroAmerican Historical and Genealogical Society. Ozier is known for her passion in uncovering her own family origins, as well as helping others begin their own family ancestral research journeys through her genealogical firm, Ancestral Pathways LLC. Check out this excerpt from the interview below: How and when did you first become interested in genealogy and family ancestry? Ozier: In college a friend asked me if I knew the names of my great-grandparents and their siblings. I didn’t, and he gave me a chart I used to interview my mother so she could give me the names of both sides of my family. I started officially documenting my family in a family tree in 2000. What is the most surprising thing that you have found in your own research journey? Ozier: I found an 1838 document where my 4th great-grandfather, Godfrey Jason, was being sold. It was the first document I actually saw of any of my ancestors being enslaved.

What are your recommendations for someone who is just getting started in researching family genealogy? Ozier: There are a few items to think about getting started, particularly for African American researchers: Always consider name variations, spelling doesn’t matter. Don’t assume your ancestors were enslaved before the Civil War; about 10% of Black peoples were free prior to the war. Before trying to find enslaved ancestors, complete family research from the present back to at least 1870. The formerly enslaved did not always take the surname of their enslaver. All records are not online.
Follow these key steps for genealogy: Document what you know; start with yourself and progress backward. Interview family members to fill in gaps. Develop a plan to answer genealogy questions what information do you want to know? Conduct research online and in-person. Analyze the records you gather. Summarize your findings. Share the story with your family and others. GPB EDUCATION Georgia Farmcraft 2024 Uses the Popular Game Minecraft to Teach Students About the State’s Agricultural Industry Pre-Season Launch is February 13

PB Education is inviting students throughout Georgia to participate in Georgia Farmcraft® 2024, an educational program that uses the popular game Minecraft to enhance understanding of the evolving agricultural
industry and its impact on global food security. The program is open to all ages but is designed to supplement the learning of students ranging from 8-18 years of age. “This is a unique opportunity to offer a Georgia version of the free Farmcraft® program that is presented to youth around the world by the U.S. Department of State and the Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federations (NASEF®),” says GPB VP of Education Laura Evans. “Georgia is the first state to offer a regional version of the competition to students in our state.”

Each year, Farmcraft® participants have been tasked with challenges that are faced by farmers, as well as those that explore the relationship between agricultural and environmental sustainability. Georgia Farmcraft® 2024 is focused on the impact of digital technology on agricultural productivity. Framed by the question “How do you grow more with less?,” Georgia Farmcraft® 2024 will share new technologies and approaches that farmers can use to increase how much they grow, improve how they grow it, and have more options for where they can grow it. Georgia Farmcraft® 2024 begins February 13 with pre-season challenges, in which lessons plans are provided to educators that reinforce the learning objectives of the program and can be integrated into curriculum throughout the year. The regular season begins March 11. During the pre-season and regular season, streaming events called Food for Thought, will feature experts on the topic areas who will answer questions from the organizers and participants. Scores from all participants who complete all the challenges will be used to determine several award winners for the season, who will be announced during an awards presentation in May in collaboration with Skillshot Media. Minecraft Education Edition is provided free to all participants throughout the course of the program.

Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth was raised in the crucible of segregated Birmingham but he was forged by its attempt to kill him. When the KKK planted a bomb underneath his bed and he emerged unharmed, he was sure he was saved by God to lead a Movement. His work inspired freedom movements around the world.
