Now that we’ve had time to look back on a very successful year-end for 2021, I want to take a moment to offer my thanks to you for making that happen! Over the last few years, we’ve made it our goal to introduce you to the philanthropic side of this organization. While we will always be a go-to destination for quality, entertaining and educational programming on television and radio, we are frankly so much more. The primary differentiator between us and our commercial counterparts is found within the pages of this book. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: Riveted: The History of Jeans Premieres Monday, February 7, 9 PM

New Documentary Explores the Evolution of the Iconic American Garment Boot cut, flare, ripped and faded. Mom jeans, dad jeans, skinny jeans. Everyone has their favorite style and their favorite pair. American Experience: Riveted: The History of Jeans, premiering Monday, February 7 at 9 p.m., is the fascinating and surprising story of the iconic American garment. “Jeans are the perfect, quintessentially American item through which to examine the complex story of America,” says American Experience executive producer Cameo George. “They reflect their times and provide a unique and unexpected starting point for discussions of race, gender, class and culture. And they’re also one of the few things we all agree on—we all love our jeans!” From its roots in slavery to the Wild West, youth culture, the civil rights movement, rock and roll, hippies, high fashion and hip-hop, Riveted explores the garment’s rich history, featuring interviews with a diverse cast of historians, authors, designers and so-called “denim heads.”

“JEAN-OLOGY” The invention of blue jeans is typically credited to Levi Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant looking to make his fortune selling garments to the 49ers during the California Gold Rush. But half a century before Strauss, enslaved people in the American South were wearing a precursor of denim made from a coarse textile known as “slave cloth.” The blue hue of jeans resulted from an arduous dyeing process using the indigo plant. West African enslaved people had invaluable expertise for growing, processing and dyeing the plant that had been brought with them. During the postwar era, jeans became the unofficial uniform of teen rebellion, prompting some schools to ban them. Jeans manufacturers fought back, forming the Denim Council, to convince the public that jeans would not corrupt their children. By the 1970s, jeans had evolved into a billiondollar industry. The rise of “designer jeans” and labels such as Jordache, Calvin Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt made jeans a designer item many could now afford. The emergence of hip-hop in the 1980s and 90s pushed jeans into a new realm. Baggier cuts and subversive takes on preppy high-end brands such as Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger reflected anti-establishment and rebellious notions.

Georgia Public Broadcasting Receives $175,000 Grant from Truist Foundation to Create a New Bilingual Game Start It Up! GPB has received a $175,000 grant from Truist Foundation to create a new bilingual (English/Spanish) online simulation/game - Start It Up! - designed to allow players to experience making realistic decisions surrounding starting a small business. Produced in collaboration with the Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE), FableVision and the University of Georgia Entrepreneurship Center, the game will be designed for high school and college students. It will simulate the role entrepreneurs and small business owners play in creating and growing a new business from the ground up. Game play will be linked to real-world examples, including small business best practices and start-up strategies, key financial products, approaches to doing business and examples of small business successes, offering players insight and advice from entrepreneurs who have successfully created thriving businesses in communities throughout Georgia.

SNAP JUDGMENT PITCH POINTS: Find A Character: Who tells the story? Brevity: Tell us the basic bones of the story. Detail: Let us know a couple of small details about why this person is so interesting. Plot Points: Pitch us stories that unfold like a film. The Twist: The character should not be a stereotype. This person should behave surprisingly at some point in the story. A Solid Ending: How have things changed from beginning to end? How has the character changed? Trope to Avoid: Something really sad or tragic happened to me and I got over it by doing something positive. The Truth: The story should be true to the best ability of the person telling the story. Many stories rely on the recollections of the storyteller, but the story should be true.

CEO SPOTLIGHT by GPB CEO Teya Ryan While you, our individual donors, are the lifeblood of Georgia Public Broadcasting, this month I’d like to draw your attention to a source of support you may not be aware of – private and corporate foundations. Grants from these partners also play a role in bringing you the programs and services you depend on. In addition to general support for our original programs, grants often provide critical seed money for new initiatives and special projects. One of our most ambitious endeavors is the digital reimagining of GPB News, including our specially branded GA Today e-newsletter and podcast. The transformation of our journalism division to meet the demands of the digital age would not be possible without the support of a leading Atlanta foundation. Much of our grant support is in service to children and youth. Resources such as the VR Initiative, a virtual reality project teaching kids everything from the Civil Rights Movement to Georgia Forestry, was made possible by seed money provided by a grant. Still other grants are indispensable for keeping the work of our Education Outreach Specialists going strong. One new grant, among others this year, will enable us to create a video series teaching kids the fundamentals of environmental science. Another program benefitting from grants is our award-winning natural science TV series, Georgia Outdoors. Bolstered by this support, host Sharon Collins has safely filmed an amazing array of specials showcasing our state’s natural wonders despite challenges presented by the pandemic. Finally, documentaries like The Macon Sound, our celebration of Macon’s incredibly rich and diverse musical heritage, would not be possible without funding provided through grants. These are just a few examples of how grants help keep our offerings for you fresh and evolving with the times. And while I hope you’ll join me in thanking our community of grant makers for supporting GPB, I also want you to remember that it is your support that keeps these programs going year after year. In spring of 2021, the Big Tent featured The Threepenny Carmen. In this version of Bizet’s beloved classic (February 13), the rough and tumble environment of The Threepenny Tavern presents a nightly variety show with Carmen (Megan Marino) and flamenco dancers.
