GPB is celebrating a new docuseries that explores the story of African American movement over the 20th and 21st centuries, and how it has shaped our nation by exploring the meaning behind those movements January 28 - Feb 18 at 9 p.m.

Hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Great Migrations: A People on the Move explores the transformative impact of Black migration on American culture and society. From the waves of Black Americans to the North—and back South—over the last century to the growing number of immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean today, the film shows how movement is a defining feature of the Black experience.

“The Great Migration was not just a seismic historical event; it’s an ongoing story.”

- Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

“The Great Migration was not just a seismic historical event; it’s an ongoing story,” said Gates. “Our series focuses on three dramatic migrations that have profoundly shaped the African American experience and redefined what it means to be ‘Black’ in this country: the great migration from the Deep South to the North and West; the reverse migration back to the South, and most recently the astonishing large migration of Africans and West Indians to this country in recent decades. In fact, more Africans migrated to the United States in a ten-year period than were forcibly shipped here over the entire course of the slave trade! Our series is the first to explore these three mass movements of Black human beings to this country, and what that has meant for the reshaping of American culture.”

Episode Overview:

Tuesday, January 28, 9 PM- “Exodus”

Episode 1 explores the first wave of the Great Migration (1910–1940), when more than a million Black Americans fled the Jim Crow South for the promised lands of the North.

Tuesday, February 4, 9 PM- “Streets Paved in Gold”

Episode 2 explores the second wave of the Great Migration (1940-1970), highlighting how Northern and Western Black communities matured through migration and transformed the cultural and political power of Black America.

Tuesday, February 11, 9 PM - “One Way Ticket Back”

Episode 3 shows how the reverse migration of Black Americans to the South—driven by mass movements, economic change and an ongoing struggle for freedom and opportunity—continues to reshape the country.

Tuesday, February 18, 9 PM - “Coming to America”

Episode 4 tells the story of African and Caribbean immigrants in the United States, examining their profound impact on American culture.

As part of GPB’s community engagement initiative around the series, we are partnering with the Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora (CSAD) at Georgia State University for the third annual Black History Month Global Read-a-Thon on February 26. This livestream event features individuals from different countries and cities that come together to read from selected books and share a local custom or cultural performance with the virtual audience.

The overarching goal of the Read-a-Thon is to promote global unity around reading and literary freedom, with emphasis on books and themes that celebrate Africa and the Black Diaspora. This year’s theme is “Roots: The Journey of Us,” focusing on narratives of journeys across the African Diaspora.

Visit gpb.org/community to learn more about the Read-a-Thon and other community events celebrating Great Migrations throughout the state.

Georgia Legends Features Our State’s Premier People and Places

Beginning Monday, February 3 at 9 PM

Curious about some of Georgia’s most famous citizens and most notable businesses and institutions? Tune in for the premiere of Georgia Legends at 9 p.m. Monday, February 3. As the series begins, host Jeff Hullinger will guide viewers through episodes capturing the lives of captivating figures from civil rights pioneers Xernona Clayton to entrepreneur Ted Turner and more.

Episodes include:

Andrew Young / NuWay Weiners

Andrew Young was a preacher, civil rights leader, and one of the most influential leaders in our state. Jeff Hullinger explores the life journey of Andrew Young and the impact he had on not only Georgians, but the country. The fast-food chain NuWay Weiners was one of the earliest hot dog restaurants in the country and is still considered a food institution throughout the middle of the state. Their decades long rivalry with Atlanta’s Varsity for being “top dog,” is legendary.

Arthur Blank / Ted Turner

Two maverick leaders, both titans in the world of business; both revolutionized their industries and brought recognition to Atlanta and the state. Jeff Hullinger sits down with Home Depot Co-founder Arthur Blank to talk about his life, his influences, his teams, and his continued philanthropy that helps so many Georgians. And sometimes called the “mouth from the South,” Ted Turner is so much more. From billboard company owner, celebrated yachtsman, to media mogul, Turner not only changed the broadcasting landscape but has tried to make the world a better place in the process.

Nathan Deal / GA Visitors Center

Former Governor Nathan Deal discusses the many roles that he has taken on in his lifelong service to the great state of Georgia and his continued support for his wife’s legacy to literacy and education. Also in this episode, it may be the country’s oldest continuously used Welcome Center, but most Georgians would have to stray far off the beaten path to find it. A look at state’s first visitors center and the history that created it.

Xernona Clayton / Robert Frost

Jeff Hullinger explores the lives of two “outsiders” who impacted the lives of so many Georgians. Xernona Clayton came in the 1960’s to help Martin Luther King in his quest for civil rights and stayed on to become a television trail blazer and beloved member of the Atlanta community. And, when Pulitzer Prize winning Poet Laureate Robert Frost accepted an invitation to teach a class at a small private college in Decatur, little did he know that it would form a decades-long relationship with the women of Agnes Scott College, influencing a generation in their love of language and poetry.

Jimmy Carter / Steve Penley

He was 39th President of the United States and the only Georgian to reach the highest office in the land, but to most people, he was simply “Jimmy.” Jeff Hullinger shares the complicated life and times of James Earl Carter, as well as the colorful and patriotic inspirations of Atlanta artist Steve Penley.

Rosalyn

n Carter

/ Roy Barnes

They were two “politicians” taking on a cause that would influence the rest of their careers. For Rosalynn Carter it would be a lifetime promoting mental health care in the state as well as the country in her role as First Lady, and for former Governor Roy Barnes it would be the painful and difficult challenge of removing civil war imagery from Georgia’s state flag. Jeff Hullinger explores the lives and political challenges of two Georgia Legends.

Funny Woman: Season 2

Sunday, February 2, 10 PM

Season two promises more laughs and heartwarming connections as we see Gemma Arterton (The Kings Man, Summerland) return as Sophie Straw, the nation’s favorite TV comedy star, navigating her newfound fame and career, a group of good friends, while her romance with Dennis, played by Arsher Ali, is full of promise. However, with new opportunities come new challenges; will Sophie be able to embrace her real life and challenge outdated cultural conventions?
