SUPPORT GPB AT THIS SPECIAL TIME OF YEAR STARTING TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3.

The Holidays Are The Perfect Time To Check In On Older Relatives

The holidays give many Georgians the opportunity to spend time with older relatives. It’s also a time when we may notice new symptoms from our older loved ones, which might include memory loss or cognitive decline.

If you notice these signs in someone you care about, it’s time to talk about getting a diagnosis for Alzheimer’s or related dementias. Georgia Memory Net provides accurate and accelerated diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias at Memory Assessment Clinics around our state, and via telemedicine.

Don’t wait—schedule a conversation with a Primary Care Provider to ask if a referral to GMN is the right next step. Visit GaMemoryNet.org/Referral to learn more.

Support GPB at this special time of year as we kick off our Season of Giving with Giving Tuesday, December 3.

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe we’ve made it to the end of another year! Here at GPB, December is always buzzing even beyond the excitement of the impending holidays. This month, we’ll partner with the Georgia High School Association to broadcast and stream Georgia’s high school football playoffs and championships – an astounding three days that consistently lands us as the nation’s highest rated PBS station over the course of the broadcast. And we’ll lean into our role as Georgia’s storyteller by bringing you a variety of programs all month long that warm your heart and prepare you for a few days of stillness and calm as we close the year. It’s also our Season of Giving turn our thoughts to you and what you want to see on GPB. Instead of our usual fundraising programming, we pepper the schedule full of holiday favorites and your most requested programs.

I continue to be so thankful that you choose to support our work. I believe that GPB is a cultural touchstone and an important part of the very fabric of our state. Your support, at whatever level, ensures that we will continue to be a knowledge hub where Georgians of all ages can access a variety of free and trusted platforms that encourage lifelong learning and collaboration. You make that happen!

I’m looking ahead to a very exciting year for GPB in 2025. As we enter our 65th year of service to the state, we will launch our ambitious five-year strategic plan and a beautiful new brand that better reflects what GPB means to you and all of Georgia. So, stay tuned to Next where you’ll see all of it first next month.

As always, I remain grateful for our relationship, and I’m hopeful that you and your family will enjoy a moment of calm and togetherness as you celebrate the holidays in a few short weeks.

Warmest regards,

Miss Scarlet

Season 5 of Miss Scarlet (formerly Miss Scarlet and the Duke) will premiere in January – but GPB will present the entire season on Passport beginning December 8!

GPB Kicks Off the Season of Giving with Giving Tuesday, December 3

Show Your Support for Georgia Today

Most people are familiar with Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving when many retailers offer highly promoted sales at discounted prices and traditionally open early (maybe even midnight). And then comes Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, created by retailers to encourage people to shop online with wide-spread sales and discounts. But most important is what comes next… Giving Tuesday, a day of generosity that spotlights the important work of nonprofit organizations.

More importantly, Giving Tuesday is the official start of GPB’s annual Season of Giving! Up to 13% of donations to GPB come to us during this crucial time, more than any other time of the year.

This year GPB will partner with Georgia Gives, the official organizer for the global Giving Tuesday campaign in Georgia. This campaign, started in 2012, raised over $33 million for Georgia nonprofit organizations in 2023, uplifting and supporting many worthy causes across the state.

This year Giving Tuesday is December 3, and we would love to have your participation as we work to raise $40,000 in support of our daily Georgia Today podcast. Hours of reporting, research, fact checking and writing go into each episode, bringing you in-depth and compelling stories from all over Georgia that you won’t hear anywhere else. It takes a team of journalists, editors, and producers to bring this podcast every weekday to listeners in every corner of our state.

There are two ways you can participate in this special Giving Tuesday fundraising effort and help us reach our goal. Please consider making a donation and help us spread the word about this important campaign. Visit gagives.org/story/gatoday to learn more and make a donation.

During this special time of year as you reflect on the organizations that matter to you, we hope you’ll consider supporting GPB. Your support will keep GPB’s public service strong and accessible to everyone in the year ahead and will come back to you in the form of thousands of hours of great television, news, information and more from GPB.

GPB IN THE COMMUNITY

GPB Hosts Indie Lens Pop-Up Series Featuring Films from Independent Lens

For years, the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary series Independent Lens has featured acclaimed films by some of today’s most talented awardwinning independent filmmakers, and the Indie Lens Pop-Up initiative gives people a chance to come together to view them and take part in community-driven conversations.

“Our films honor individuals whose determination in the face of challenge reflect major issues impacting our nation and our world,” says Lois Vossen, Executive Producer of Independent Lens. “These films are intensely personal and yet speak to universal challenges. They show how there is possibility for progress against even the most intractable challenges, when people come together in hope and purpose.”

Each year, GPB is grateful to collaborate with partners around the state for an engaging Indie Lens Pop-Up series.

GPB EDUCATION

GPB is inviting students throughout Georgia to participate in Georgia NASEF Farmcraft® 2025, an educational program that uses the popular game Minecraft to enhance understanding of the evolving agricultural industry and its impact on our state’s economy. Offered in partnership with the Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federation, the program is open to all ages but is designed to supplement the learning of students ranging from 8-18 years old. Educators in classrooms, clubs, and after school programs can build teams of up to four students to compete. Each team must have an adult facilitator. Standardsaligned lesson plans are provided to educators that reinforce the learning objectives of the program and can be integrated into curriculum throughout the year. Team scores on the challenges will be used to determine several award winners for the season that will be announced in March and win prizes. Minecraft Education Edition is provided free to all participants throughout the course of the program.

Learn more and get registered to compete at gpb.org/Georgia-Farmcraft

Does your child thrill in writing or telling stories?

This is their opportunity to have a story published on GPB’s website! Encourage them to enter the PBS KIDS Writers Contest for Georgia students in kindergarten through third grade. We will provide all the resources you need, including activity sheets and checklists to spark inspiration during the brainstorming process.

The contest launches January 21. Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry or prose. They will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling, and integration of illustrations. Winners will receive a prize pack and their stories will be featured on gpb.org

To see the winning stories from last year and get more information about the contest, visit gpb.org/writers-contest. The contest is made possible with generous support from Steve Kuranoff and Cathy Selig.
