Many Georgians notice the symptoms of Alzheimer’s or related dementia and do nothing about it. But an early diagnosis can also lead to more effective treatments, additional support for the person with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones, and access to clinical trials.
If you’ve noticed signs of memory loss or cognitive decline, don’t wait. Meet with your Primary Care Physician and tell them about your symptoms. They may recommend an appointment with Georgia Memory Net for an accelerated, accurate diagnosis.

Dear Friends,
As you thumb through the pages of this issue of GPB Next, I hope you’ll take a moment to think about the depth and diversity of platforms, programs and opportunities we offer you every day. There is most certainly a proliferation of content out there on countless channels and streams, but I like to think that what you get from GPB cuts through the noise and stands firm as more than just quality – in fact it offers an almost intangible sense of companionship. We seek out friends who make us better people, challenge us, open new possibilities and sometimes just make us laugh. That is GPB. We’re levelheaded, we keep our wits about us in challenging times, we constantly seek to educate you throughout the various stages of your life, and perhaps what differentiates us most is that we truly care about you, and everything we do, everything we produce, everything we seek out to share with you is carefully and thoughtfully curated for YOU!
As I’ve shared with you in Next before, we’ve been in the midst of a strategic planning process here at GPB since March, and it has been an incredible journey of discovery. But, maybe more so than that, a journey of affirmation. The world is moving fast, technology is changing every day, but we’re keeping up and continuing to bring you the information, entertainment, educational moments and unique opportunities to experience these things in person. And we’re doing that on more platforms than ever right now. Just go to gpb.org and take a look at the variety of content streams we bring you, from innovative home improvement and travel on Create to deep discussions and enlightenment on Knowledge to the beauty and reverence of the arts and creators on All Arts and unique worldviews of NHK. And of course we can’t forget the quality, educational children’s programming found 24 hours a day on GPB Kids – the only kids channel packed with intentional, educator developed learning moments for the little ones you treasure. There is so much, and I’m excited to share with you even more about GPB’s future plans in the coming months, so please stay tuned!
Meantime, enjoy the following pages packed with unique and inspiring moments and know that we’re here to continue that enlightened path of companionship with you always.
Warmly,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO

In a new three-part series from American Public Television, Alan Carr’s Adventures with Agatha Christie premieres Thursday, August 1 at 7 p.m. and continues weekly through August 15.
Alan Carr is a well-known British comedian, TV personality and lifelong fanboy of the best-selling novelist of all time, Agatha Christie. Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and started her writing career after her sister Madge bet her she couldn’t write a decent detective story. Even today, we can be sure Christie won this bet since her work is outsold by only the Bible and Shakespeare. She is best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, as well as the world’s longest-running play – The Mousetrap
Agatha Christie
The Mousetrap at the St. Martin’s Theatre.
In this all-new series, Carr embarks on a very personal adventure to visit the quintessential locations that inspired Christie’s most beloved characters, Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. From the quaint villages of Miss Marple to the metropolitan Art Deco elegance of Poirot, Alan Carr’s Adventures with Agatha Christie is a funny, entertaining, and fact-filled travelog through Britain’s most beautiful landscapes, celebrating the woman who immortalized them in her writing and offering a fresh new perspective on her life and work.
Carr’s series will be followed at 8 p.m. by season one of MASTERPIECE, Poirot, inspired by Agatha Christie’s fictional character, Hercule Poirot. Poirot is among Christie’s most famous and long-running characters, appearing in 33 novels, two plays, and 51 short stories published between 1920 and 1975.
In the series, David Suchet stars as Poirot, the mustached super sleuth who solves murders with penetrating perception and no small amount of self-regard.
Don’t miss out on this spotlight on Christie’s life, work and the real-life locations which inspired her world-renowned stories.

GPB Partners with the Multiple Autisms Collective for a Family Meet-Up
Attendees pose at the Navigating Autism In Communities of Color premiere on March 22 at the John Lewis Student Center, Atlantic Theater in Atlanta.
GPB organized a meet-up event at the Metropolitan Library in Atlanta on July 24 in partnership with Multiple Autisms Collective that offered families a chance to meet with organizations around the city that offer support and resources for children with autism and developmental delays. In addition, the event offered story time, activities, games and information on PBS Learning Media resources.
The Multiple Autisms Collective is an interdisciplinary and collaborative effort between academic and community partners that raises awareness of autism in diverse communities through real stories of struggle and hope.
In addition to giving families who are going through the same life experience the chance to meet with each other, the event also showcased the Multiple Autisms Collective’s film Navigating Autism in Communities of Color, which explores the unique struggles of navigating autism in a structurally unequal society.
A collaboration between the School of History and Sociology and the School of Literature Media and Communication at Georgia Tech, and The Color of Autism Foundation, Navigating Autism offers a first-hand account of the challenges and hopes for a future that embraces autism in Black communities.
“We created the documentary to raise awareness about autism in the Black community and the inequities evident in diagnosis and services,” says Jennifer S. Singh, an Associate Professor in the School of History and Society. “We also wanted to provide stories that are relatable to families who are experiencing autism.”
After the July 24 meetup, the community was invited for a virtual screening of the film on July 29. Participants watched the film, then had a discussion with parents that were featured in the film.
GPB Partners with PBS News Hour Reporting Labs and Georgia’s Secondary Educators and Students to Launch Student Voices Collective
GPB is joining with PBS News Hour Student Reporting Labs and Georgia’s secondary educators and students to launch Student Voices Collective for the 2024-25 school year.
The dynamic partnership kicked off with an immersive one-day in-person workshop at GPB’s Atlanta headquarters on June 13 led by members of GPB’s news and education staff and PBS. The comprehensive training covered mobile journalism, podcasting, on-site recording, editing and more.
Student filmmakers create their own short videos for their showcase.
Student Voices Collective empowers secondary educators and students across diverse disciplines and amplifies student voices, along with expanding their knowledge of civic engagement, media literacy and digital citizenship.
Student participants will explore pressing issues, including the upcoming presidential election, and benefit from one-on-one mentoring, ongoing virtual check-ins with reporting and production teams and access to a speaker’s bureau of journalism professionals.
GPB will showcase student-produced content on its Young Voter Voices site throughout the coming school year at gpb.org/education/student-voices
Be sure to check out the Student Voices Collective website and encourage our participants by sending ideas for student reporting to education@gpb.org.

We’re officially at the start of the high school football season and GPB Sports’ coverage of Friday night football beginning August 16 at 7:30 p.m. This year, the anticipation is palpable as the GHSA has revamped the region classifications going into the new school year, and in turn, is shaking up the already fierce competition.
In an interview with Jon Nelson, On-Air Host and Producer for GPB Sports, he explained that this year, the competition will be unmatched and there are sure to be some upsets.
“Not only is the talent incredible across the state, but the players are experiencing more competition and pressure than ever since the 7A classification has been removed,” Jon said. “This decision to condense the regions, puts a few previously reigning champions lumped together, chasing the same title. This will make for an insanely entertaining season!”
Specific teams of interest to Jon and his team in the 5A region include Gainesville, Roswell, and Milton as well as region 1-4A which now includes Ware, Warner Robins, Perry and Benedictine.
GPB Sports host, Jon Nelson.
“To cover this level of competition - you know something big will be happening every week,” Jon predicts. “All of these hyper competitive regions and teams are going to be ranked in the top ten for most of the season in their classification and for a top ten team to chase their championship on the road will make for some great stories…”
While you can expect the condensing of the regions to be increasing the competition this season, you can also expect Jon and the GPB Sports team to be there giving you the playby-play on the Football Fridays in Georgia podcast.
And, just because it’s been off-season for football, doesn’t mean the coverage has stopped. Be sure to check out the GPB Sports Football Fridays library to get caught up before the season’s kick-off. Recent content from Hannah Goodin’s “Beyond the Lights” segment features stories and interviews with the coaches, players, officials and teams of family and fans behind the scenes of Georgia’s best football players and programs.
Want to join us this season as we discover the best talent across the state and feature the fierce competition along the way? Follow along at gpb.org and on the GPB Sports app.
