Alzheimer’s Diagnosis Is Just Part Of The Picture
Many Georgians know Georgia Memory Net helps people experiencing memory challenges or cognitive decline get an accelerated, accurate diagnosis for Alzheimer’s or related dementias. But there’s more to GMN’s services.
Georgia Memory Net also creates a per sonalized care plan for those diagnosed with dementia—a plan that can be shared with Primary Care Providers to help guide ongoing care. GMN also connects people diagnosed with dementia, and their care partners, with support organizations in their area so they can access the assistance they need and deserve.
The first step to access all this support is to schedule a conversation with a Primary Care Provider. Ask them if a referral to GMN is the right next step.
Visit GaMemoryNet.org/Referral to learn more about getting a referral for a GMN Memory Assessment.

Dear Friends,
Welcome to the April 2024 issue of GPB Next. By now, spring is beginning to show its life-giving colors across the state of Georgia; and likewise, GPB is showering you with colorful life-changing programming. As we have been doing intentional research on our audiences and looking internally to focus on bringing YOU the very best experience from the work we produce and distribute here at GPB, one thing always remains true – there is so much! That’s why, in GPB Next each month we try to highlight each part of the company so you can see the multifaceted work that GPB is doing in communities across the state every day. From our vital education programs for K-12 students to our thought-provoking community engagement opportunities to your favorite programs from NOVA, Nature or MASTERPIECE, GPB has something for everyone.
And, that’s part of what we’re working through now. Georgia is so dynamic – its people, its varying geographic locations – a spectrum extending from generations-long residents of the North Georgia Mountains or the South Georgia plains to the new transplants finding their way into the bustling city of Atlanta. Every day, our focus must be sharp in serving all of you. You come to public media to be challenged and to learn something new. But you also come for better awareness of your surroundings and a healthy dose of nostalgia. I’m excited to see the future of our company shaping up with a clear and concise focus on serving you – whoever you are.
This month in the magazine, we’ll celebrate Earth Month with programming tailored to highlight and inform such as Saving the Chattahoochee: The Story of the Women Who Defended the River, a fascinating documentary from Hal Jacobs. We’ll also relish the joy of childhood with a look at the library event introducing the new PBS KIDS series Lyla in the Loop, remember a recent donor event with public television and radio icon Rick Steves and encourage you to interface with GPB to Tell Your Story. As always, so many exciting things, and something for everyone.
Warmly,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB President and CEO

Take Part in a Screening of Saving the Chattahoochee: The Story of the Women Who Defended the River and Enjoy Other Special Programs
From the mountain laurel and rhododendrons in the North Georgia Mountains, to the azaleas in Atlanta neighborhoods, the cherry blossoms of Macon and fragrant star jasmine in the southern part of the state, the beauty that spring brings is a perfect reminder of why we celebrate Earth Month each April.
As part of GPB’s special Earth Month programming, on Monday, April 22 at 7 p.m ., you can tune in for Saving the Chattahoochee: The Story of the Women Who Defended the River. The documentary recounts the story of three generations of women leaders who sought to improve the environmental condition of the river, including former Atlanta mayor, Shirley Franklin, and Sally Bethea, the founder of the organization, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. As the most heavily used water resource in Georgia, the Chattahoochee River drains an area of 8,770 square miles.
In advance of its television airing, GPB will host a special free community screening of the film at the Columbus Public Library on Tuesday, April 16. Filmmaker Hal Jacobs will be joined by representatives from Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and Columbus State University to provide insight on the project and other ways to be involved.

Five Reasons Caregivers Should Participate In The Savvy Caregiver Program with Dr. Kenneth
Hepburn
Georgia Memory Net offers free Savvy Caregiver® training for people who help care for loved ones with dementia. Dr. Kenneth Hepburn, GMN’s Community Services Education Core, shares why it matters.
The program shares practical ways to guide the person living with dementia through days that are as safe, calm, and pleasant as possible.
It's Person-Centered: Savvy Caregiver teaches that personhood persists, and engagement is possible at every stage of dementia.
It's Proven: Research shows that taking part in the program strengthens the ability to provide care and reduce stress.
It Supports Care Partners: Caregivers—to be blunt—can be terrible at taking care of themselves. Savvy Caregiver emphasizes the importance of self-care.
The Price is Right: There is no charge for the course!

I’m a semi-retired attorney who works from home. During the day, I have GPB playing on my smart speaker. I watch PBS NewsHour almost every weekday, and something from Passport almost every evening. I have so appreciated GPB before and during the pandemic – familiar voices and faces that provided me with news, hope, and humor. Thank you!
GPB presents balanced, factual, and thoroughly investigated reporting and educational programming that entertains and encourages children and adults to live healthier and inspired lives. We have supported GPB financially for many years and plan to continue.

Pamela Kirkland Joins GPB as the Host of Morning Edition
Award-winning journalist Pamela Kirkland has joined GPB as the local host of Morning Edition. With an extensive background in radio, television and podcasting, Pamela’s career has taken her nationwide, covering four presidential campaigns, Congress and the White House.
Her experience includes producing for PBS NewsHour, where she reported on critical issues such as the opioid crisis, immigration and education. In addition, Pamela served as a field producer for CNN, and she has worked on podcasts including Reveal, from the Center for Investigative Reporting, and 70 Million, which explores issues within the criminal justice system.
“I’ve been on the air for just about a month and I love being able to celebrate the stories of Georgia each morning,” said Pamela. “I’ve already had a chance to speak with amazing people working to better the communities we live in and shine a light on issues that are important to Georgians. We also manage to have a little bit of fun, talking about some of the lighter news happening around the state.”
In addition to her work on Morning Edition, Pamela will also contribute to other GPB News content, including the Battleground: Ballot Box podcast.
“Looking ahead, I hope to continue having these important conversations and amplify the voices that don’t get as much attention,” Pamela added. “I look forward to opportunities to work directly in the community, and hope listeners tune in!”

The Cost of Inheritance: An America ReFramed Special Explores the Complex Issue of Reparations in the U.S.
After taking part in a three-year project funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to work with local communities on racial reparations, three Georgia colleges – Emory University, Spelman College and Wesleyan College - are sharing their results. Members of the public can learn more by attending a screening and discussion of the film The Cost of Inheritance: An America ReFramed Special.
Created as part of the Crafting Democratic Futures project, The Cost of Inheritance: An America ReFramed Special, explores the complex issue of reparations in the U.S. using a thoughtful approach to history, historical injustices, systemic inequities and critical dialogue on racial conciliation.

In January of this year, members of the community gathered at Emory University for a screening and discussion of the film, where professors from Emory and Spelman shared their ongoing research. Wesleyan College’s Lane Center for Social and Racial Equity has been working with Macon’s Tubman Museum of African American Art, History and Culture to host several community discussions that resulted in a series of historic markers that will be placed throughout Macon and preserve more of the city’s extensive and storied African American histories.
The Cost of Inheritance: An America ReFramed Special is available to stream online, and on the PBS Video app on your smart tv.
Spelman College will host a screening of The Cost of Inheritance on Sunday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. Visit gpb.org/community to learn more and register for this event.
