As we enter the month of May, I’m sure many of you are starting to plan for the summer season and take a break from the hustle and bustle of your day-to-day responsibilities.

With most of the spring flowers at their peak, the month of May provides a sense of renewal, when we’re inspired to stop and take notice of our natural surroundings and reflect on what we’ve accomplished at this point in the year.

At press time, we have just learned that we are nominated for 25 Southeast Emmy awards, including Overall Excellence, a special achievement award presented for excellence in the overall operations of a television station, news/sports cable system or online media outlet.

But, for GPB, it’s not really about being nominated or winning awards – it’s validation that we are following through with our vision to “Unite and Uplift” Georgia by providing rich stories of our state’s history and culture, educational content and resources, community engagement opportunities and public safety initiatives.

It’s because of you, our donors, that we can do this work. Your willingness to stand by GPB in whatever season we’re in is the key to keeping our vision vibrant. To that end, we’re presenting more exciting programming this month, including Life On Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure, a new documentary from Sir David Attenborough that tells the story behind his legendary series Life on Earth. The documentary premieres on May 6, two days before Sir David celebrates his 100th birthday.

And following last month’s digital premiere of GPB’s original series Marked!, which examines Georgia’s role in Revolutionary history, it will premiere on television May 18. Revisit the Groundbreaking Series That Cemented Sir David Attenborough’s Legacy as the Most Influential Wildlife Filmmaker of Our Time

I

n 1976, Sir David Attenborough embarked on an ambitious three-year global odyssey to film Life on Earth, an innovative documentary of unprecedented scale.

Attenborough and his team traveled to 40 countries to document over 600 species

and faced extraordinary challenges along the way, including a coup in the Comoros, gunshots in Rwanda and threats from Saddam Hussein’s army in Iraq. Written and

presented by Attenborough, Life on Earth set out to “tell the greatest story in all the world”: how life on our planet evolved.

Fifty years after production began, and in celebration of Attenborough’s 100th birthday, Life On Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure offers rare, behind-the-scenes insight into the making of the groundbreaking series. Featuring exclusive interviews with Attenborough and his original crew, the special captures the triumphs and setbacks of filming the series during a pivotal era in television history, when jet travel and color filming were relatively new. Life On Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure premieres Wednesday, May 6, at 8 p.m. on GPB. Life on Earth was the first series to combine cutting-edge camera technology and techniques. Time-lapse, microphotography and filming speeds of up to 10,000 frames per second were used to capture animal movement in ways never before seen — from striking rattlesnakes to leaping lemurs and hovering hummingbirds.

New Kodak film stock allowed the team to produce some of the sharpest and most colorful wildlife footage at the time, while the new Canon 300 lens enabled the camera crew to film at dawn and dusk and document new animal behaviour previously thought impossible to record.

“Natural history television has produced an understanding in the audience about the importance of the natural world,” said Attenborough. “It’s an understanding of the part humanity plays in the way the world operates and the way in which we are totally dependent on the natural world. Every breath we take and every mouthful of food that we eat comes from the natural world, and if we damage the natural world, we damage ourselves.”

The documentary details how the team captured some of the series’ most astounding moments — a lioness ferociously taking down a wildebeest, the rare moment a male Darwin’s frog “gives birth” by mouth and Attenborough’s unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, which he calls one of the greatest privileges of his career.

Upon its broadcast on PBS in 1982, Life on Earth quickly became a global phenomenon, commanding the attention of over 500 million people in more than 100 territories. Its extraordinary success launched five decades of ambitious wildlife storytelling and cemented Attenborough’s legacy as the most successful and influential wildlife filmmaker of our time.

American Experience: Citizen King Thoreau’s legacy continues to resonate throughout history, influencing many. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one such person inspired by Thoreau, particularly by his essay “On Civil Disobedience.” This contributed to King’s creed of non-violence, one that surprised many Americans and achieved success in several civil rights hot spots and is highlighted in the film American Experience: Citizen King.

Service Day with the Georgia Conservancy Thoreau believed we should each have a special place of refuge, beauty, meaning or inspiration. On April 18, GPB partnered with the Georgia Conservancy during their Service Day at Sweetwater Creek State Park in Douglas County. Participants celebrated nature and reflected on our connection to it through hands-on projects throughout the park. Beyond the Battle: How One Couple Is Redefining Street Dance Culture WeOnFyre Cypher available now on GPB Passport

assion. Expression. Inclusion. Those are just a few words that describe Anthony “Fyrefli” Gasaway, Jr. and Joy “Kuma” Gasaway, professional street dancers, instructors and co-founders of the Atlanta-based international

dance crew FyreNation. As friends of GPB, we’ve enjoyed watching this incredible organization grow, including their participation in various GPB-led events focused on culture and outreach.

Now, they’re telling their story, including how they launched the community dance and networking event WeOnFyre Cypher, to public media fans across the country.

The couple was chosen as one of three recipients of the 2026 “ALL ARTS Artist in Residence” series from PBS ALL ARTS. Their film, WeOnFyre Cypher, premiered on GPB Passport on April 14 and is now available to stream. Ahead

of the premiere, I asked them about their journey to FyreNation, how dancers of all ages and skill levels can get involved and what they hope viewers will take away from the documentary.

For Joy, dancing became a passion early on. After trying out ballet, she shared that she met some actual street dancers in her junior year of high school. “They were always dancing at assemblies or just online, and that was pretty cool,” she shared. Dancing soon became something she leaned upon for support, when in the mid-2010s, her mother fell sick with endometriosis. “I needed another space to express what I was feeling at that time, because it was a lot. I needed other people around and at the time, dance was my solace.”

That was when she considered the idea of hosting dance cyphers. Popularized in hiphop culture as a gathering of artists improvising on the spot, dance cyphers weren’t nearly as popular as their vocal counterparts. This was something Anthony understood as well. Passionate about dance as a young man and supported by parents who also loved dancing, he entered a dance battle by chance as a teenager and earned his dancing nickname, Fyrefli, from a friend.

Moving to Atlanta from Houston made it difficult at first for him to be accepted by local dance crews. “I wanted to form a crew because so many crews out here were very cliquish,” Anthony explained. “If you’re a certain skill level and you’re not from Atlanta, they don’t want you at the forefront.”

But when he met Joy, everything changed. When the world entered lockdown in 2020, Anthony began to teach online dance classes and found Joy’s dance videos on social media. “I saw what she was doing, and I loved the style,” he said with pride.

What began as sharing tutorials and refining techniques led to sharing dreams and refining goals, and friendship turned into love and marriage. “We want to show the full potential of what dance can do…[it] could be more than just us being in clubs wearing uniforms…we can do more than just battle all the time,” Anthony continued. “The cypher can be a touchpoint as a family-friendly safe space in the community.”

And for Joy, the film puts a spotlight on how dancing can inspire others. “We’re filming what our story is. A lot of people think that dancers are amongst the starving artists.

But dancers are everywhere, and there needs to be more representation. I’m happy that we’re able to provide some of it.”

Recipe of the Month

Celebrate National Buttermilk Biscuit Day May 14 May 14 is National Buttermilk Biscuit Day and here in Georgia, we can’t let the day pass by without a celebration. So, we turned to our friends on GPB’s social media pages and asked their recommendations as to who has the best biscuit in Georgia.

Responses were varied, with an overwhelming majority insisting that a friend or family member made their favorite biscuit. But several local restaurants pulled ahead with multiple recommendations, and we’re pleased to announce the finalists from over 80 different eateries. Here are your top picks:

But if you prefer to celebrate with a homemade buttermilk biscuit, we suggest this recipe from Erika Council and our friends at PBS North Carolina: originally from North Carolina, Council is the baker and recipe developer at the heart of Bomb Biscuit Company in Atlanta.

Ingredients: 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening, cut into ½-inch bits and chilled 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into very thin slices and chilled 1 ¾ cups full-fat buttermilk, well-shaken and chilled, plus more for brushing

Adjust the oven rack to center position and heat oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda in a large bowl.

Then, work in the shortening, followed by the butter, with fingertips until only pea-size pieces remain each time. Cover and place in the freezer for 15 minutes or until the fat is firm.

Add the buttermilk in a slow, steady stream, stirring with a fork until dough forms and pulls in all the flour mixture. The dough should be a sticky ball that looks shaggy.

Turn the dough onto a floured work surface. Dust the dough with flour. With floured hands, pat the dough into a rectangle that is 1/4-inch thick. Starting with one short end, fold the dough in thirds, as though folding a business letter.

Push firmly straight down through the dough without twisting the cutter. Gently gather the dough scraps and cut out more biscuits until all the dough is used.

Arrange the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 1 inch apart.

Use a soft pastry brush or fingertips to lightly brush the tops of the biscuits with buttermilk. Bake until golden brown on top, 12 to 15 minutes.

Hope Givers: Supporting the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Georgia’s Youth

s Director of the MFA Film Program at the University of Georgia, I spend a great deal of time thinking about the future—about the students we teach, the stories we tell, and the communities we serve. That sense of responsi-

bility is one of the reasons I created Hope Givers, an Emmy Award–winning series produced in partnership with GPB. The series highlights young people across Georgia who are making a positive impact in their schools and communities.

Our youth today face growing pressures. Social media, academic expectations, bullying and the lingering effects of the pandemic have all contributed to increasing concerns around anxiety, depression and isolation. These realities require thoughtful and community-centered responses that encourage connection, empathy and resilience.

Hope Givers was created to shine a light on young people who are choosing leadership, service and kindness. By sharing these stories through public television, we help students see examples of their peers creating change. When young viewers see people their own age making a difference, they begin to realize that they, too, have the power to positively impact their communities.

Our partnership with GPB has allowed these stories to reach classrooms and households throughout the state. Public media has a unique ability to inform, inspire and educate, and together we have worked to ensure that the voices of young leaders in Georgia are heard.

Beyond the television series, we bring this mission directly into schools through Hope Givers Live! - an interactive program designed to engage students in conversations about empathy, leadership and mental wellbeing. These events across the state (over 30 mostly rural counties thus far) have provided students with an opportunity to see positive role models, share their perspectives and understand that their voices matter.

The impact has been measurable. Data from Hope Givers Live! events shows that the overwhelming majority of students report feeling more connected to others and being able to identify a trusted adult after participating in the program. Educators consistently report increased student engagement in discussions around kindness, leadership and community responsibility. Just as importantly, students often say the experience helps them realize they are not alone in facing challenges.

These conversations are particularly meaningful as May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. Supporting the mental health of young people is one of the most important investments we can make in the future of our communities. When students feel supported, valued and connected, they develop the confidence and resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this work has been witnessing how young people respond when given the opportunity to lead. When we highlight acts of kindness and service, students begin to see themselves not just as participants in their communities, but as contributors to positive change.

The Emmy recognition for Hope Givers is an honor, but the true success of the program lies in the students and schools it reaches. Every story we share and every live event we host reinforces a powerful message: hope is something young people can create through compassion, leadership and action.

If we continue to uplift young voices and create spaces for meaningful dialogue, we can strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of students across Georgia. When young people realize they can be hope givers, they begin to understand something profound—hope is contagious and it has the power to transform communities.

PB and the Georgia Public Library Service are partnering to create a playful, Georgia standards-aligned digital learning experience in libraries across the state with GASHA GO! World learning stations. The initiative began with

a kick-off event in March at the Metropolitan Branch of the Fulton County Library System.

Created by GPB in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education, FableVision Studios and Georgia educators, GASHA GO! World is a digital learning platform that builds core computer science (CS), math and literacy skills in children ages 5-8 through story‑driven games, animated videos, and hands‑on activities.

The GASHA GO! World learning stations created by GPLS and GPB to be placed in statewide libraries feature an iPad loaded exclusively with the GASHA GO! World app, accompanied by headphones, activity books, and informational pamphlets. Additionally, libraries are receiving activity books that reinforce the concepts introduced in the games, information trifolds that help families and teachers understand GASHA GO! World’s role in children’s education, a student passport that children can mail to GPB for a special reward and GPB-led training for library staff.
