Gamma Phi Beta
Dear Sisters, As chapters settle into the new school year, recruitment is in the spotlight for many. Whether your chapter has already celebrated Bid Day, is putting the finishing touches on preparations to welcome new members or has moved into continuous open bidding (COB), I want to remind you what recruitment actually is. It's not a pitch. It's not a sales process. Recruitment is showing a young woman her own future at Gamma Phi Beta before she's had the chance to imagine it herself. Find her first, and everything else becomes possible. Every year, we stand in front of thousands of young women who may not yet have an idea of what they're capable of. We've seen it before, in ourselves, in our sisters, in every woman who walked through recruitment nervous and unsure and walked out years later leading rooms she once would have been afraid to enter. Think about the potential new member (PNM) trying to figure out where she belongs, where, years from now, she'll look back and say, "That is where I became who I am." She's not just choosing a chapter — she's looking for a space to hold her while she grows; and here's what we get to tell her: it's here. That's what I mean when I say recruitment is about more than adding members. It's about helping more women see themselves in Gamma Phi Beta and building chapters they can't wait to come home to. This year’s Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, was a reminder of the home and strong sisterhood so many of us chose so many years ago. Over 750 sisters gathered to celebrate our 82nd Convention, and if you couldn't be there with us, I'm so glad this issue lets you feel like you were. Turn to page 24 to relive it with us. While Convention gives us the big picture of the power of our sisterhood, we never forget where it all started for us personally — our own chapter of initiation. I hope you'll take a few minutes with our 2025–26 Fiscal Year (FY) Chapter Snapshot on Page 12. It's filled with chapter statistics, including installation year, total initiated members, Gives Day and philanthropy fundraising and open advisor roles. Gamma Phi Beta is launching this biennium focused on recruitment, and we will remain focused on it every day until we meet again in 2028. Why? Because every future volunteer, every future donor, every future advisor, chapter president and International Council (IC) member starts in exactly the same place — as one woman looking for connection, belonging and a place to call home. Building Strong Girls
During practice, we did simple running games, like running back and forth inside the gym and running laps outside our school. The hardest moment for me was the practice 5k. It was very challenging because I had never run that far before, but I pushed through by knowing it would get me one step closer to the official 5k (and that there were treats at the end of practice). When it was time for the 5k, it was a little scary because it was loud, hot and crowded, but overall, really fun. While getting ready for the race, there was a lot to do, like get face gems and temporary tattoos, make hats and so much more. My favorite part was the photo shoot, where my mom, who was my running buddy, and me took photos with fun props. The running was tough because some of it was uphill but there were so many people cheering, holding signs and encouraging you to keep going. When we crossed the finish line, I felt happy and tired and that the two months of practice were worth it. GOTR has been an amazing program for me to experience. I now know that being a strong girl means that maybe you’re not always physically strong, but you can be mentally strong, push through, and not give up. I would tell other girls who are interested in GOTR that it’s a lot of fun, you can make a lot of new friends and gain more selfconfidence.

SUSAN PATTERSON Convention 2026 featured a virtual conversation with authors Susan Solie Patterson (Wisconsin-Madison) and James Patterson as they discussed their new book, “The Mother-Daughter Book Club” featuring Gamma Phi Beta. Susan has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was an All-American swimmer. She is the coauthor of “Big Words for Little Geniuses,” a New York Times bestseller. She is also a proud Gamma Phi Beta. James Patterson is the most popular storyteller of our time. He is the creator of unforgettable characters and series, including Alex Cross, the Women’s Murder Club, Jane Smith, Maximum Ride, and of breathtaking true stories about the Kennedys, John Lennon and Tiger Woods, as well as our military heroes, police officers and ER nurses. He has coauthored #1 bestselling novels with Bill Clinton, Dolly Parton and Michael Crichton. He has told the story of his own life in “James Patterson by James Patterson” and received an Edgar Award, ten Emmy Awards, the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation and the National Humanities Medal. In addition to the virtual interview, Susan shared her perspective on writing “The Mother-Daughter Book Club” with her husband, as well as a look back at her time as a GPhi and how her Sorority experience influenced the story and brought the pages to life for all GPhi members who read it. readers who haven't yet read the book, how would you describe it? 1 For The story is about joy, love, loss, tragedy and long buried secrets. At its heart, it celebrates the special bonds between mothers and daughters, the power of friendship and the strength of sisterhood. And that's why it feels especially meaningful to share it with all of you — my Gamma Phi sisters — because the bonds we form as sisters can last a lifetime. experiences or relationships in your life first inspired you to tell 2 What this story? The inspiration for this story grew out of our first novel, “Things I Wish I Told My Mother.” That book was inspired by my mom, who had recently passed away. A few days after she was gone, I was overwhelmed by the realization that I could no longer talk to her. I looked at Jim and said, “There’s so many things I wish I could tell my mother.” He said, “That 8
would make a great book.” And just like that, a story was born.
returned to Madison together last fall — a wonderful reminder of how enduring those bonds can be — almost like the book! Other friendships also found their way into the story. A longtime lawyer friend helped inspire aspects of Elin's personality and professional life. And because one of our characters is a doctor — we were fortunate to draw on the expertise of our niece, Brigid, who is an MIT/Brown University trained neurologist in real life. Her insights were invaluable in helping us get the medical details right.
of the relationships in the book feel deeply 3 Many authentic; how much of your own life found its way onto these pages? While the characters in “The Mother Daughter Book Club” are entirely fictional, each of them contains small pieces of real-life experiences and emotions. After all, we know relationships can be complicated and they evolve over time. Mother-daughter relationships, in particular, can be loving, complex, joyful and sometimes challenging all at once. We wanted to create characters who felt authentic and relatable — no cookie cutters. That's why the women in the novel are intentionally different — from an opera singer to a minister. We loved seeing them evolve organically as we wrote the book. Despite their differences, they share a common bond. They all met the first week of college and have been inseparable, building the kind of lifelong sisterhood Gamma Phi is known for. One that's been there through every laugh, every tear, milestone, challenge and celebration, even if it was long distance.
back on your life, what has sisterhood come 6 Looking to mean to you today compared to what it meant when you first joined Gamma Phi Beta? When I first joined GPhi, it was a way to expand my college experience, and joining a special circle of sisterhood made perfect sense. Today, I see it a little differently. Looking back, I realize sisterhood is not just about the years we spent together in Madison — it's more about the lasting connections that continue to shape us long after graduation. While it's not always easy to stay in touch because “life happens,” the bonds we formed remain. Sisterhood has come to mean a shared history, a sense of support and the knowledge that we are connected by experiences that helped shape us. I look back fondly on my time in Madison and Gamma Phi Beta is an important part of that story.
did your experience as a Gamma Phi Beta 4 How member shape the way you think about friendship, sisterhood and belonging? Since we wanted to have the story revolve around college friends (and their daughters) it made perfect sense to set the scene in Madison since Wisconsin is my alma mater. And what better way to create a bond than sisterhood? Gamma Phi was a special part of my college experience. It was the first sorority I visited during [recruitment] and very welcoming (the famous fudge bottom pie sort of sealed the deal). And a little bit about the Gamma chapter house — it's a historical beauty — Spanish/Mediterranean Revival style and about to celebrate 100 years (hear that, Gamma Chapter girls?), worthy of a crescent moon and all the pink carnations in Wisconsin! particular friendships from your college years 5 What or beyond influenced the relationships readers will
are the women who have most shaped your 7 Who understanding of friendship, and what did they teach you? It's difficult to point to any one person because my understanding of friendship has been shaped by a wonderful collection of women throughout my life. My mother certainly had a profound influence on me, and she always said, “You’re going to miss me when I’m gone.” (Of course, you were right, Mom). I was also very close with my aunts. They all taught me the importance of loyalty, kindness and being there for the people you care about. book explores mother-daughter relationships; 8 The what drew you to that dynamic and did your own
encounter in the book? Some of that inspiration came from the friendships I've been fortunate [enough] to have over the years. I remain very close to my Gamma Phi roommate, and I've stayed in touch with several other GPhi sisters as well. More recently, I've become friends with a fellow GPhi alumna who attended Wisconsin at a different time. Even though our college years didn't overlap, she's remained close with her Sorority sisters, and they even
experiences influence the way you approached it? “Things I Wish I Told My Mother” really struck a chord with readers and we decided to explore that dynamic further. We wanted to write a joyful book with a realistic love story and secrets. What better way to do that than with a group of college friends who love books and never need much of an excuse to get together? This time, we added their adult daughters to the mix, which opened the door to all kinds of interesting relationships, 9
perspectives and, of course, a little drama. And the food! Worthy “Mother Daughter Book Club” recipes are at the back (don't miss the Killer Chocolate Cake). made this the right project for the two of you to 9 What work on together? We've been “collaborating” for over 40 years — since our advertising days. We've since written five New York Times best sellers together — and what a joy they've all been. The first three were part of a children's book series, “Big Words for Little Geniuses,” followed by “Things I Wish I Told My Mother.” I'd always wanted to write children's books, but when I was in graduate school, my professor steered me toward advertising because he thought I'd have a tough time finding a publisher. But my dream came full circle with the “Big Words” series. “Things I Wish I Told My Mother” was an incredibly rewarding, emotional journey — and “The Mother Daughter Book Club” felt like the perfect followup because it combines the kind of stories we both love — relationships, family, friendship and characters who stay with you long after you've turned the last page. was the most rewarding part of collaborating 10 What as husband and wife on this book? Jim likes to say I'm his favorite collaborator — but remember, he writes fiction! And given he's had some impressive cowriters — Dolly Parton and President Clinton — I'm happy to take the compliment. The most fun part of the book for us was definitely the research. We traveled to Lake Como and basically got to “live” the book firsthand. We took a Riva boat ride worthy of Captain Danny, enjoyed the incredible homemade bucatini with Piennolo tomato sauce at La Goletta, while imagining Danny and Grace on their first lunch date and discovered the San Giorgio church with the four women saints in Varenna. We spent plenty of time eyeing lakeside villas, imagining one of them as Mariella's. There's something magical about walking the same cobblestone paths your characters might've strolled and seeing the landscapes you'd only imagined. While the book was mostly finished by the time we visited, we were able to embellish our journey, making our details authentic and the entire experience a lot more fun. Not every book comes with a trip to Lake Como! friendships change over time; what have your 11 Many own lifelong friendships taught you about growing
you. And I think it goes without saying that if you meet someone and discover they're also a Gamma Phi Beta, you've already got an instant bond, and very likely, an instant friend. readers take away one message about friendship, 12 Ifsisterhood or family after turning the final page, what do you hope it is? A few years ago, I was passing by the [Gamma Chapter] house on my way for an ice cream late at night. Just then, a group of GPhis walked up the path to the front door. I decided to take a chance. I was fully prepared for one of them to turn around, give me the side eye and politely turn me away. Instead, the exact opposite happened. These wonderful young women were genuinely excited to welcome me inside. Full of questions, they eagerly gave me a tour, wanting to know which rooms I had lived in and what the house looked like “back in the day.” They even found my picture on an old composite hanging on the second floor wall. They asked about the “phone booth” with the landline we all had to use before cell phones — a concept they greeted with laughter and complete disbelief. One of the women even turned out to be the daughter of one of my college classmates. I could go on, but I’ll never forget the sincere kindness they showed a complete stranger. That experience reminded me of what sisterhood truly is, and I loved every minute of it. do you hope Gamma Phi Beta members see or 13 What recognize about their own friendships when they read this book? There’s an unspoken bond between sisters that goes much deeper than crescent moons, pink carnations or even a secret handshake. It might not be blood, but it’s a special connection that's real nevertheless. Embrace it. Cherish it.
alongside someone through different stages of life? I'm always reminded of a poem with the notion that people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. It's one of those simple truths that sticks with 10
The Secret to Stress-Free Holiday Spending HOW SINKING FUNDS CAN HELP YOU SLEIGH YOUR HOLIDAY BUDGET. By The Money Confidence Project
The holidays can be the best. They can also be expensive. One minute you're sipping on hot chocolate, and the next you're shopping for gifts, booking flights or hotels, buying party outfits, and dreading your credit card statement. Holiday expenses tend to sneak up on you, creating a stressful shadow on what should be the most wonderful time of the year, but they don’t have to. One of the smartest ways to enjoy the season without the financial stress is by creating a holiday sinking fund ahead of time. A sinking fund is a separate savings account meant for a specific goal. Think of it as a dedicated savings bucket for an expense you know is coming. Instead of scrambling to cover holiday costs in December, you set aside a little money throughout the year. Even saving $25 or $50 each month can add up to a holiday budget that lets you celebrate confidently and relieves the financial stress that often comes with this time of year. Sinking funds work because they make big expenses feel manageable. Rather than relying on credit cards or dipping into your emergency savings, you're simply spending money you've already planned for. It's a simple habit that can reduce stress, help you avoid debt, and leave you feeling more in control of your finances. Best of all, you can use them for almost any planned expense, including vacations, pet care, home repairs, annual dues, or upcoming chapter and sisterhood events. Want to make it even easier? Create a Holiday Spending Goal in the Groove app. You can set a target amount, track your progress, and celebrate milestones along the way. Whether you're saving for gifts, travel, holiday décor, or all three, seeing your progress grow can be just as satisfying as crossing names off your shopping list. You can also learn more about sinking funds and savings tactics in the app.

fter months of planning, booking flights and picking out perfectly themed outfits, Convention 2026 was finally here. Gamma Phi Beta’s 82nd Convention brought 763 collegiate and alumnae together in Louisville, Kentucky, for the first time in our history. Inspired by Louisville’s rich horse racing tradition, the week was filled with connection, celebration and sisterhood. Unable to attend this year's Convention? Turn the page for a look back at the unforgettable moments! With a packed schedule featuring business sessions, vendor shopping, awards presentations, rituals and countless opportunities to grow in sisterhood, there was something for everyone. To kick things off, Wednesday, July 15, served as an optional arrival day. Registration, the Hat Decorating Room, ribbon station and Foundation Room were open to all, along with the opportunity to shop Gamma Phi Beta apparel and accessories at Crescent Corner. An invitation-only dinner for Supporters of the Heart took place that evening, while optional sisterhood activities gave attendees a chance to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones before the official start of Convention.

On Thursday, July 16, Convention officially began as even more attendees arrived, excitedly greeting one another with cheers, hugs and smiles. For first-time Convention attendees, or those needing a ritual refresh, a Ritual Review Session covered how membership is verified before entering Convention meetings, opening exercises and what to expect during Initiation and Memorial Services. Sisterhood Meetups offered sisters the opportunity to connect with groups including Sisters with Disabilities, LGBTQIA+ Sisters and Women of Color. Meanwhile, all collegiate chapter delegates participated in a Flag Processional practice, preparing to proudly represent their chapters while carrying their flags. The fun continued at Crescent Corner with the T-Shirt Bar, offered for the first time at Convention. Sisters had the opportunity to print custom t-shirts onsite, choosing from a variety of designs, colors and sizes to create a personalized keepsake that would serve as a lasting reminder of the week. That evening, the Welcome Dinner took attendees on a “Tour de Lou,” celebrating Louisville traditions from the moment attendees walked through the doors. Tables were decorated with symbols celebrating the city's history and culture, including northern cardinals, baseballs representing the Louisville Slugger Museum and a mix of roses and carnations. During dinner, sisters watched a nostalgic montage featuring footage from Conventions spanning decades, reminding everyone of the generations of members who came before them. While Convention is filled with celebration and sisterhood, it is also where the important business of the Sorority takes place. Following dinner, sisters gathered for the first business session,
26
which included the Opening Ritual, introductions, presentations of both alumnae chapters and collegiate chapters and the Presentation of Colors. To close out the busy day, two optional evening events gave attendees even more opportunities to connect. At the Collegian Sisterhood Reception, collegiate members came ready to swap Gamma Phi Beta merchandise, enjoy an assortment of desserts and dance the night away with music provided by the DJ. Across the hall, the Volunteer Sisterhood Reception offered a more relaxed atmosphere, complete with light hors d'oeuvres and meaningful conversations among volunteers and chapter advisors from across North America. Friday, July 17, began with opportunities to get moving. Members could participate in an optional Gamma Phi Beta-themed Jazzercise class or join the optional Girls on the Run (GOTR) Runners Group for a run through downtown Louisville. Both activities provided another chance to meet fellow attendees and build lasting friendships with sisters who shared similar interests. Following these events, meetups over coffee gave sisters the opportunity to reconnect with members from their own regions and meet regional team volunteers. The day featured two business sessions, providing sisters with opportunities to engage, participate and help shape the future of the Sorority. The morning business session included the Bylaws Forum, Bylaw Amendments and the State of One Gamma Phi Beta, with important discussions and decisions focused on the future of the Sorority.
27
The afternoon business session featured the election of the International Council (IC) and Nominating Committee (NC), as well remarks from GOTR, highlighting their mission of building strong girls. After an already jam-packed morning, sisters gathered for a celebratory lunch – and what a celebration it was! The “Winner’s Circle” Awards Luncheon celebrated the phenomenal accomplishments of collegiate and alumnae chapters, affiliated house corporations (AHCs) and volunteers over the past biennium. Long-time Kentucky Derby bugler Steve Buttleman made his appearance, sounding the bugle as a signal that it was time to begin. In keeping with Louisville's Kentucky Derby tradition and the Convention theme, the emcees appeared dressed as a horse and jockey, bringing plenty of laughter before the awards presentation even began. The afternoon was filled with smiles, applause and many happy tears as sisters and volunteers were recognized for their dedication, achievements and commitment to Gamma Phi Beta. With Friday evening came Confirmed Conventioneers! Sisters decorated their hats, adding one pink
carnation for every Convention they had attended. This year's celebration took place at Louisville's historic Churchill Downs. An evening dedicated entirely to celebrating sisterhood, it included dancing, a hat decorating contest and countless opportunities to reconnect with friends. The parade celebrated both Convention and the dedicated sisters who return for every celebration. Those with the most carnations on their hats had the honor of leading the parade. Members also had the opportunity to pose for photos with a real racehorse, making for an unforgettable memory. Like Friday, Saturday, July 18, began with the optional GOTR Runners Group and an optional yoga class, leaving attendees refreshed and ready for the final full day of Convention. It was also the last opportunity to visit the Foundation Room, Crescent Corner and vendors, and many sisters took advantage of one final chance to shop, connect and support Gamma Phi Beta. The final business session included a virtual Q&A with authors James and Susan Patterson (Wisconsin-
28
Madison) featuring their novel “The Mother-Daughter Book Club.” Those who registered as full attendees received a signed copy of the book in registration bags. Sisters concluded the conversation by singing, “I Love the Crescent Moon,” bringing Susan Patterson to tears of happiness. The session also included the presentation of several major honors, including the Philanthropist of the Year Award to Rochelle Strada Bullock (Loyola University New Orleans) and Carnation Awards to Jill Castilla (Oklahoma State), Kari Watkins (Oklahoma), Dr. Valerie Verge (McGill) and Gina Schaefer (Wittenberg). Members also got a first look ahead as Phoenix, Arizona, was announced as the location of Convention 2028. The session concluded with Courtesy Resolutions, Mentor’s Report and the Closing Ritual. Recruitment is at the heart of the Sorority, welcoming new members and creating opportunities to share in the bonds of sisterhood. Members gathered to rejoice in welcoming the next generation of GPhis at the Recruitment Luncheon, “Picnic at the Paddock.” This ticketed celebration brought members together
29
to reflect on and honor the successes of chapter recruitment throughout the past biennium. Following lunch, Carnation Award winner, Ace Hardware store founder, visionary entrepreneur and keynote speaker Gina Schafer (Wittenberg) delivered her inspiring keynote speech, "Just Because the World Underestimates Us, It Doesn't Mean Our Fate Is PreWritten." Through stories from her own journey, she encouraged attendees to find their inspiration and voice, confidently promote their skills and overcome self-doubt. Afterward, attendees had the opportunity to meet Schafer and purchase a signed copy of her book, “Recovery Hardware." The Memorial and Initiation Services provided members with the opportunity to reaffirm their
"Throughout the week, I watched collegians recognize that they are part of something much bigger than their own chapter, alumnae reconnect with longtime friends and sisters of every generation build new relationships. I left Louisville reminded of what Gamma Phi Beta is capable of and genuinely excited about the
commitment to Gamma Phi Beta while honoring sisters who passed away during the biennium, while also initiating six new sisters. These meaningful ceremonies served as a powerful reminder of the lifelong bonds of sisterhood and the traditions that unite generations of members. Finally, the Pink Carnation Banquet brought Convention to a memorable close. This year's theme, "Moonlight and Mirrorballs," celebrated Kentucky's history as the birthplace of the disco ball while providing an opportunity to honor the Sorority. Together, sisters celebrated Gamma Phi Beta, recognized the service of the outgoing IC and welcomed the newly elected IC as they begin the next biennium. The Gamma Phi Beta Loyal Friend Award was presented to Michael McPhee in recognition of his dedicated years of service to the Sorority as a staff member, volunteer, mentor and advocate for members. Gamma Phi Beta’s most prestigious award, the Honor Roll Award, is presented only when there is a deserving candidate and IC agrees on the recipient. Annabel Jones (Oklahoma) was honored for serving at the highest levels of leadership across Gamma Phi Beta, including all three governing boards, and for the lasting impact she has made on the Sorority. It was a night filled with friendship, gratitude and celebration, and a reminder of the incredible people who continue to make GPhi so special.
future we are building together. " — International President Stephanie Gauchat Carriere (Arizona)
Convention 2026 will be remembered as a time when sisters came together to celebrate, learn, conduct the business of the Sorority, strengthen lifelong friendships and create new memories. From Louisville's rich traditions to Gamma Phi Beta's cherished rituals, every moment reflected the spirit of sisterhood that continues to unite members. Until next time — Convention 2028 awaits!

A Little Note, a Lasting Welcome Move-in day can be intimidating. A new home, new roommates and a new season of life can bring plenty of uncertainty. For the women of Beta Delta Chapter at Michigan State University, creating a sense of comfort from the very beginning is a top priority. What began as a small gesture that may have gone unrecognized has grown into a cherished tradition. Before moving out of the chapter house for the last time, each resident leaves a handwritten note tucked inside a desk or dresser drawer for the sister who will call the room home next. Filled with words of encouragement, advice and sometimes even humor that will surely spark a smile, the notes offer reassurance between the excitement and nerves of move-in day. When a new GPhi moves in, she is welcomed by a former resident — someone she may have never even met, but who thought about her before she arrived. Eventually, she’ll become the sister leaving a note behind. It’s a simple tradition, but one that ensures every new resident begins her time in the chapter house knowing someone was already waiting to welcome her home.

Foundation
At this year’s Convention, the Foundation Room gave members meaningful ways to support Gamma Phi Beta’s future. Whether making a gift, honoring a sister or participating in fundraising activities, members came together to strengthen the Foundation’s mission and invest in the sisterhood.
Giving in Action The opportunity drawing and silent auction were highlights of the Foundation Room, with 161 donated items, more than 1,000 opportunity drawing tickets purchased and 221 silent auction bids placed. Every donated item, ticket purchase and bid reflected the generosity of sisters who are committed to advancing the Foundation’s mission maintaining lifelong sisterhood.
Creating Lasting Impact The generosity of Convention attendees translated into meaningful support for the Foundation. Through Foundation room activities, members raised $40,939. Together, Convention fundraising generated a total of $73,885 to support the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation and its mission.
Sharing in Sisterhood This year, the Foundation Room continued the beloved Hearts tradition. Members could purchase Hearts to recognize sisters, celebrate friendships, honor volunteers and more. Recipients proudly displayed their Hearts on their name tags throughout Convention before taking them home as keepsakes. More than 2,500 Hearts were shared with sisters and friends, serving as visible reminders of the cherished connections between members.
Continuing the Mission Every gift made during Convention helps strengthen the future of Gamma Phi Beta. Through the generosity of members and friends, the Foundation can continue investing in leadership opportunities, educational initiatives and programs that empower women for generations to come.

“I'm incredibly proud of what the Foundation Room represents. It's a place where sisters can see the lasting impact of philanthropy, celebrate the generosity of our donors, have a little fun and be inspired by the difference we're making together.” — Chief Development Officer Elizabeth Vaughn

Born in Minden, Nebraska, in 1938, Betty Kempf was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. A longtime educator, she dedicated her career to serving students as an English teacher, school counselor and school psychologist. Her commitment to Gamma Phi Beta was equally enduring. She assisted with the colonization of the Gamma Kappa Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, served as the chapter’s first chair and remained active in the Sorority throughout her life. Her three daughters, two granddaughters and niece followed in her footsteps by joining the Sorority. Her legacy will live on through the family, students and sisters whose lives she touched.
Born in London, England, in 1990, Cristina Grossu Biffle tragically passed away in a plane crash on December 18, 2025, alongside her husband, son and stepdaughter. A talented realtor, marketer, entrepreneur, children’s book author, event planner, multiple business owner and mentor, Cristina made a lasting impact through both her professional accomplishments and her dedication to others. In 2019, she was named in REALTOR Magazine’s “30 Under 30” list, recognizing her achievements in the real estate industry. She had a passion for helping others, having donated her time and resources to support communities in Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. A devoted wife and mother, she was known for her infectious smile and warmth that drew in those around her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Revisiting Convention 1966
It has been 60 years since sisters gathered at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for Gamma Phi Beta’s 52nd Convention, but the memories from that eventful week have a lasting impact.
The Philanthropy Board, established in 1952 to coordinate the Sorority’s philanthropic efforts, was dissolved, and its functions transferred to the Foundation. The Bylaws of the Foundation were also amended by the Trustees to provide for standing committees to carry on the work of the former Philanthropy Board. Dues were increased for the first time since 1958, reflecting the financial needs of the rapidly expanding Sorority.
Convention 1966 was hosted at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs National Park on June 19-23. The theme, “The Wonderful World of Gamma Phi Beta,” was meant to highlight the Sorority’s nationwide increase. 82 collegiate chapters and 78 alumnae chapters were represented with a total attendance of over 400.
At the Pink Carnation Banquet, retiring Grand President Orra Spencer Reid (Michigan) was presented with the first new white crescent badge set with diamonds. Helen M. Dodge Ferguson’s original diamond badge, bequeathed to the Sorority in 1937 and worn by the grand presidents since 1937, had become very fragile and was officially retired at Convention. It was placed on display at Central Office, but was unfortunately stolen in a robbery during the 1980s.
There were many opportunities for chapters to win awards, including for the most polished record books and the best original song. At the formal banquet, peanuts and olives were served as a way of honoring founders and past members. In keeping with the dinner’s theme, “Angels in Gamma Phi Beta,” centerpieces of 16-inch papiermâché angels were displayed with pride. 42
