GOWEEKLY 48 2018 RECIPE

Crispy Rocky Road Bars

Have you ever tried no-bake recipes? If not, start with these delicious Crispy Rocky Road Bars. They are dense, creamy, chocolate-y, and studded with peanuts and marshmallows. Crispy Rocky Road Bars are simply amazing and decadently rich.

Ingredients -

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 2 cups butterscotch chips 1 cup peanut butter 6 cups crisp rice cereal 4 cups miniature marshmallows

Directions -

-

Line a 9"x13" pan with parchment paper or wax paper Melt together the chocolate and butterscotch chips and stir well until smooth Once melted, add the peanut butter and stir until smooth Remove from the heat and add the cereal, stirring until it's completely coated with chocolate Now it’s time to add the marshmallows. Stir until they're evenly distributed. Give the melted chocolate a chance to cool down before adding the marshmallows. You don’t want them to melt in the mixture! Pour the mixture into your prepared pan and even it out with a spatula. Refrigerate until firm, and then slice into squares.

TIP: These bars will keep best in the fridge.

"The chocolate, the butterscotch, and peanut butter go together really well, the cereal gives a nice crunchy texture, and the marshmallows offer a touch of fluffy sweetness. Try it!

Bianca Berends

“To be an artist , means to be free” Oil paints, brushes of all kinds and sizes, canvases, large and small, all kinds of materials and art related books are just of few of the many items to be seen in the spacious atelier of Bianca Berends, a Dutch fine artist, and a portrait painter. Bianca, an optimistic and social individual, was born in Gouda, Netherlands. By: Jade Mambre. Photography by: Joelly de Palm At the age of four, she left the Netherlands with her parents and traveled the world and returned at the age of 11. When she was around 15 years of age, Bianca started to take painting more seriously while becoming more interested in the human form. She always explored her creativity. With the help of her experiences, she discovered she wanted to be an artist. Seven years ago, Bianca and her husband made

8

the decision to move to a warmer climate. After her father suggested Curaçao, she decided to visit the island once more after so many years. There was this instant connection, so, since 2011 she has been living in Curaçao and creating amazing colorful and mixed media artworks.

The Artist’s Academic Career Due to traveling the world with her parents, Bianca went to 18 different

schools. In high school, she chose drawing as one of her courses because she knew she wanted to go to an art academy and do a degree in graphic design. Right after high school, she went to Academie voor Beeldende Kunst, an art academy in Maastricht. During her first year, she explored various corners within the art world. In the end, she completed her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and a degree in art teacher training.

GOWEEKLY 48 2018 COVER STORY

With time, she found out that being a teacher was not quite what she wanted. Not long after, Bianca went to the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University and completed her master’s degree in Arts and Culture in 2000. That was also the year she decided to start painting full time. She specialized in portrait painting and worked on commissions for almost 15 years.

The Space to Create “If you always work with portraits you always have this framework” that you need to use. In contrast, Bianca wanted space to create, and experiment by trying new techniques. “I love to do something new each time and let the results surprise me.” When she worked on commissions, she started to miss the excitement of creating, which is why Bianca made the decision to stop. Since then, she has been working on a new series with the aim to explore different techniques and different materials. Looking at all her previous artworks she saw exactly what theme she should choose for her series: Beach Life.

Inspirations Bianca often looks at artworks of other artists, like Joaquín Sorolla, for inspiration. “You have to let yourself be inspired by what others are doing.” She is also constantly inspired by seaside scenes and the photos she takes at the beach. She is attracted to children because children have this “beach life feeling to them”. “They can play hours in the water and with sand.” They are simply happy with so little when they are at the beach.

Bianca’s Style She would describe her work as “colorful and modern, mostly oil paint combined with mixed media”. “My work has always been so colorful.” As a painter, Bianca sees the climate of Curaçao as an attractive force. The colors on the island really stand out, as Curaçao is so colorful and warm. “It is like a puzzle.” All her paintings are like puzzles with their very own unique character. They consist of different bits and pieces, which in the end form an entire work of art. “I am the happiest when I am in my art studio and when I am painting”

“I am the happiest when I am in my art studio and when I am painting”

Bianca would advise anyone who wants to be creative to go to an art academy because you can learn so much and explore different paths. You will also learn “to criticize your own work and to find the balance between being able to look [at your work] critically and also to be able to enjoy your accomplishments”. It is a part of an artist’s development. “To be an artist means to be free.” It is also a combination of having a talent and hard work. If you can persevere, “you will land on your feet no matter what…” Just “...follow your heart”.

A few of the Artist Achievements: • The Portrait Society of America recognized Bianca as a leading artist and she received a Certificate of Excellence. • One of her portraits was a part of the BP Portrait Award in London in 2004. • Bianca’s paintings were in different well-known museums and galleries in Great Britain, Canada, and the Netherlands. • She painted two portraits of the former governor of Curaçao, Frits Goedgedrag and one of the former governor of Aruba, Fredis Refunjol

I bet that you have a really great idea of what you would like to see come true, an idea or dream in which you put all your energy and passion to really make it happen.

Why Most of the time, we think of these ideas when we are struggling, when we are not happy with a situation or when you know that there is more than what you have right now (reality check). But why do we keep limiting ourselves? Simply because we have obligations, a mortgage, a family to provide for, we are not willing or we are scared to take risks or we just don’t know where to start. While eating some delicious food my mother cooked yesterday, it just kept me thinking. I know that throughout these years, she received major com-

LIMIT YOURSELF?

pliments about her cooking skills. So, I made some nice suggestions on how she can use those skills in a way she can earn an income in the weekends. Here are a few quick questions to help you find out if you still need to follow your dream: - Is my idea good enough to make people enthusiastic? - Are they willing to pay for my idea/product? - Make a summary of the costs and see if they are achievable. - First, test your idea to close family and friends.

- Check if you need a partner or if you want to do it by yourself. It’s not necessary to only dream of your passion. By making small steps you will know soon enough if your passion is something more than just a dream or a dream that you can control and make it a reality.

Invest in yourself. Yours, Jesse

How to SURVIVE the HOLIDAYS while being on a DIET

If your New Year resolution includes weight loss, don’t wait. Start planning now. Here are a few TIPS and TRICKS to help you work towards your goals: 1. Set realistic goals like maintaining the weight you've already lost. Continuing to lose weight will inevitably be more challenging with all the holiday dishes. 2. Write your goals down. Studies show that this helps you manage your weight better.

5. Sip smarter. Drinking plenty of water promotes healthy digestion, prevents headaches, and it fills you up. If you need a little variety, try infusing your water with cucumber.

3. Plan ahead. Keep the right food in your kitchen and make some great low-carb snacks as substitutes for sugary seasonal offerings. Plan on indulging too! Setting certain foods as a priority ahead of time will make it easier to avoid mindless snacking.

6. Be picky. Whether it's roast turkey or a holiday ham, protein dishes keep you feeling full and generally contain fewer carbs. As for sides, choosing acorn squash, green beans, red cabbage, and other flavorful and nutrient-rich holiday sides will help you stay away from empty carbs found in some of the other popular holiday dishes.

4. Eat before you go. Eating a meal to satisfy your appetite before you head to a holiday party will help you easily avoid cookies, pies, and other temptations.

Weight loss is not easy but Shape Curaçao truly believes that with family and friends around, you will be much more motivated!

Keep in mind: What you haven’t gained, you don’t need to lose.
