Adam Levine and Maroon 5 are being urged to pull out of performing at the Super Bowl halftime show in support of former NFL player Colin Kaepernick. More than 44,000 people have signed a petition on change.org calling on the group to cancel their plans to perform at the sporting event in Atlanta on February 3 next year. Maroon 5 have yet to officially confirm their involvement.

This is a Lebanese dish, excellent for dipping with vegetables or spreading on bread. It can also be used as a topping for just about any dish.

Ingredients - 1 ½ cups Greek yogurt - ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil - 1 tbls chopped fresh mint - 1 tbls chopped fresh dill - ½ tsp kosher salt, or to taste Directions Mix Greek yogurt, olive oil, mint, dill, and kosher salt together in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate up to 12 hours.

“Giving back

is the best gift you can receive"

Gershwin Bonevacia is talented, ambitious and driven. He is a poet, a writer and a storyteller amongst many other things. His purpose is to not only share his talent with the world, but to also let the younger generation display theirs. He is giving them a platform so they can express themselves. GoWeekly spoke to Gershwin about his love for poetry, his ambitions and his future plans. By: Jade Mambre | Photography provided by Gershwin Bonevacia Gershwin is born in the Netherlands but his roots lies in Curaçao. He lived on the island for a few years before returning to Rotterdam where he got interest-

ed in writing, especially poems. He wrote his first official poem at 16. This interest was sparked by his curiosity for philosophical thoughts. He liked the

wordplay of philosophers like Spinoza.

He is also a fan of Joost Paars, Saul Williams, Nina Simone and Bob Marley, whom he considers his inspirations.

Forward a few years later, he now organizes the ‘Poetry Night Amsterdam’ together with Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam, formerly known as ‘I speak’, where young and talented poets can display their craft. The difference between his Poetry Night and others is that at his event people from all walks of life are welcome to perform. One of his goals is to break the stigma that poets and writers should be old white males. According to Gershwin, it is the poet and the writer who speak things into existence, therefore it is important to give them a stage.

“Dyslexia has made him a very creative person”

He has never made it a secret that he suffers from dyslexia, but this has never formed an obstacle for Gershwin. It has been quite the contrary, because of this he is able to write in a very metaphorical manner. It is as if you are able to visualize his poems.

He states that dyslexia has made him a very creative person.

Gershwin started a one man show called ‘Regen dagen’ in 2015 and published a poetry bundle ‘Ik heb een fiets gekocht’ in 2017. ‘Regen dagen’ is an hour and a half long performance where he recites all his poems.

The message he wants the people to take home is that after all bad things that may happen to you the sun will shine eventually and everything will be better.

Having presented at Google, the University of Amsterdam and the van Gogh Museum amongst other big companies, Gershwin still hasn’t reached his ultimate goal. His ambitions are set high. He wants to become ‘Stadsdichter’ of Amsterdam and ‘Dichter des Vaderlands’. He is currently writing an opera for the National Opera and Ballet. He is also working on his next poetry bundle named ‘Wij zijn de sterren van de sterren’.

He recently presented his first bundle in Curaçao and has plans to work together with Bibloteka Nashonal di Korsou and Stichting Felis to make poetry and writing more accessible to the youth of the island. Giving back is the best gift you can receive.
