Red Bean Stew

Preparation

Step 1: Drain the beans through a strainer set over a bowl. Place the beans in a large soup pot. Measure the soaking water in the bowl, and add enough water to it to measure 2 1/2 quarts. Add this to the pot with the beans, turn the heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle boil.

Skim off any foam and/or bean skins.

Step 2: Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium heat in a large, heavy skillet and add the onions, carrots and peppers. Cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are tender and fragrant, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add 2 of the garlic cloves and continue to cook for another minute or so, until the garlic is fragrant. Season to taste with salt, add another tablespoon of oil and add the paprika. Cook, stirring, for a couple of minutes, until the vegetables are well coated with paprika and the mixture is

aromatic. Add a ladleful of simmering water from the beans to the pan, stir with a wooden spoon or heatproof spatula, scraping the bottom and sides of the pan to deglaze, then stir this mixture into the beans. Add the tomato paste and bay leaf, reduce the heat, cover and simmer 1 hour.

Step 3: Add the oregano, the remaining garlic cloves, salt to taste, cayenne, vinegar and sugar, and continue to simmer for another hour. The beans should be thoroughly tender and the broth thick and fragrant. Taste and adjust salt, and add more cayenne if desired.

For a thicker stew, strain out 1 heaped cup of beans with a little liquid and purée. Stir back into the stew.

Step 4: Just before serving, stir in the parsley. Serve with white rise or funchi.

1 Pound (2 1/4 cups) IBERIA Red Kidney Beans, washed, picked over and soaked for 6 hours or overnight in 2 quarts water 2 Tablespoons IBERIA infused extra virgin olive oil 1 Large onion, chopped 6 Garlic cloves, minced 2 Carrots, peeled & chopped 1 Large green bell peppers, cut in small dice 2 Tablespoons sweet Hungarian paprika 2 Tablespoons Iberia tomato paste 1 Bay leaf Salt 1 Teaspoon oregano Pinch of cayenne 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar ½ Teaspoon sugar Freshly ground pepper ½ Cup minced fresh parsley

According to Gionel Virginie, who is affiliated with the organization, believes that beauty is not only about appearance, but also about the participants’ intellectual abilities and their mental strength, which are the main elements that Curaçao International Crowned Queens helps the participants with. Keep reading to get acquainted By: Jade Mambre with the Queens who had the opportunity to represent Curaçao internationally.

Charayneli Sintjacoba, 8 years Charayneli joined the world of beauty pageants at the age of five. She always had this wish to be a model and to represent Curaçao abroad. Curaçao International Crowned Queens saw an amazing potential in Charayneli, and with a dynamic father, Raichel Sintjacoba, they worked on making her dream come true.

It was her first time participating in Santo Domingo, which is why she was just a little nervous; nevertheless, she whipped her hair and won the crown!

Charayneli is Miss Little Beauty World International 2018. She enjoyed her experience in Santo Domingo; she loved the scenery and seeing the many beautiful places.

Kares Alexander, 13 years When she was only four years old, she set foot in the world of beauty.

Her love for beauty started at a very young age. Yes, Kares is our Juvenile Carnival Queen of 2017 and 2018 and she represented Curaçao as a horse rider twice in Colombia. This year she traveled to Santo Domingo and came back home with the titles of Miss Beauty World International 2018 and Miss Pre-Teen Elegance. With Curaçao International Crowned Queens and a mother who always stands behind her, she achieved it all! "I never doubt myself, because, with my mother behind me, I will go for it!"

FUTURE GOALS: to be a pediatrician and to be a role model for youngsters.

Hasty Isenia, 16 years

Hasty Isenia started with beauty pageants when she was 11 years old, but she started modeling at the age of eight. When she was young, she used to watch the one and only Tyra Banks on YouTube, imitate her and train her walk at home. Her next step was participating in a casting, and then she continued with local beauty pageant competitions. After gaining experiences and after many preparations, she represented Curaçao in Santo Domingo and won the title of Miss Grand Prize Beauty World International 2018. She absolutely enjoyed exploring Santo Domingo and to get acquainted with the culture and the people.

FUTURE GOALS: to be a businesswoman, to have her very own clothing line, to become a professional model and to participate in Miss Curaçao to go to Miss Universe.

Fiona Jamanica, 19 years Fiona is a model who started her modeling career at the age of four. “My passion is modeling.” After Gionel Virginie approached her, she became part of the beauty pageant world. As a model, she went to New York twice for fashion week, but being in this world of beauty pageants is new to her. This new world exposed her to skills she never knew she had. “I learned to be in control of myself and my emotions.” She learned to open up and speak to those around her. Throughout her journey, she grew as a person. Fiona represented Curaçao in Miss Teen Mundial 2018 and won the title of Second Runner-up and the best body prize.

FUTURE GOALS: to be an international top model and to have her very own hotel.

Celia Klein, 18 years Celia made the decision to participate in beauty pageants after being approached by Gionel Virginie. She wanted to experience something different, something she would normally have never done. In May she participated in Miss Teen Américas 2018 in San Salvador. Even though she did not win a prize, she believes that she is now “richer in experience,” and that is without a doubt a winner’s mentality. Celia states that everything happens for a reason.

She did her utmost best and she will try again. The organization, Curaçao International Crowned Queens, is happy to see Celia’s personal development and her input. “We are proud of her”- Gionel Virginie. She is our Miss Teen Américas Curaçao 2018!

FUTURE GOALS: to become an entrepreneur in the world of tourism and to participate in Miss International, Miss world or even Miss Curaçao!

Daviënne Bislip, 17 years She is a brand new face in the world of beauty pageants. She had only one and a half month to prepare and follow trainings including public speaking trainings. She never used to wear makeup and especially not high heels. Even so, Daviënne Bislip is a youngster who is determined to achieve her goals. “I learned that if you put effort [in what you are doing] it will all run smoothly.” Not only is Davienne’s beautiful smile shining bright, but she also won the prizes Miss Elegance and Miss Best Dressed and she won the title of Miss Teen Tourism World Curaçao 2018.

FUTURE GOALS: to have her own business and to participate for Miss Curaçao and then Miss Universe.

Invest in your MIND Throughout my career, I meet a lot of people from different cultures who have different mindsets, educational backgrounds and so much more. I am always inspired by the story of these people, as sometimes lessons cannot be learned in classrooms. I am talking about life lessons. These lessons are, from my point of view, the best lessons you can learn to know how to control your mind and using the techniques in your life.

When you buy a device, it comes with a manual, so you know how to work with it or control it. However, the moment we were born we did

not receive a manual. So, in life, we do our best to make life as beautiful as we can in this world and to grow to be the person we want to be.

There are no limits!!

My best advice is to live like a sponge; yes, you read it perfectly, a sponge. Where ever you go, listen carefully to those who inspire you.

Ask questions to continue with your journey and act on the information you have been collecting to define and create your own world.

A “must have” book for you as a guideline: “Solve for Happy by Mo Gawdat. You will thank me later ;-)
