GOWEEKLY 07 2016 ENTERTAINMENT

Zendaya: ‘My job is to connect with the world’ Actress and singer Zendaya insists her main purpose in life is to share important messages with her peers. The 19-year-old rose to fame on Disney Channel series Shake It Up and, while she loves to perform, the star believes she can’t be selfish with her fame. “I don’t just sing, dance, and act because I love it,” she told the US edition of Glamour. “You have to have a purpose, and mine is to connect with the world, to get across messages that are important. I’d much rather be known for leaving a little stamp of positivity on one person’s life than for the last project that I did.” One of the issues close to Zendaya’s heart is raising awareness about AIDS and this summer, the star plans to travel to the International AIDS Conference in South Africa to give a speech as part of her ongoing work with the UNAIDS organisation. However, Zendaya is just as keen to point out the virus can strike anyone in any country and encourages people of all ages to get regular health checks.

Lady Gaga: Bieber cuddles up ‘Oscar nomination is extremely healing’ Pop star Lady Gaga’s Best Original Song Oscar nomination is “extremely healing” for her.

“It’s (nomination) truly an honour, and it is extremely healing actually, for it to be for a song that for both of us, is part of who we are,” she explained to People, “and I feel kind of vindicated for my own experience in a way because the song is us continuing to fight through our demons about it.”

Justin Bieber and his mother Pattie Mallette reunited on Monday night after almost two years of having a “non-existent” relationship. The 21-year-old singer and his mother went out for dinner at The Nice Guy in Los Angeles, with Justin later posting an image of their evening. In the snap, Pattie is seen tenderly kissing her son on his forehead, while Justin smiles bashfully for the camera. He captioned the shot: “Love love love.”

Source: www.music-news.com

The 29-year-old has been nominated alongside songwriter Diane Warren for their Til It Happens to You tune, which features in college campus rape documentary The Hunting Ground, and, as a victim of sexual abuse, Gaga has found the whole experience cathartic.

GOWEEKLY 07 2016 TO GO THOUGHTS

The Good Life! Text: Ruvette Dirksz

Inspired by the song ‘Dushi Bida’ by Aruban artist J. Thiel; I thought it would be good if we did an introspection and realize how blessed we truly are. Of course, our island has a lot of ‘not so good things’ happening but there are a lot of great things happening as well- and we should not lose sight of them.

“The good life is a process not a state of being, it’s not a direction but a destination” - Carl Rogers er Pleaseeoerdks 2 w ance! adv

If we constantly look at what we don’t have instead of cherishing what we have, we’ll have the impression that we are not complete or that we lead an empty life. This is not true. Don’t wait to have everything in place before YOU are in a ‘happy place’. Be happy with what you have while you work on what you want. The key to a good life is a perfect balance between abundance and values. Let’s live a good life enhancing ‘the good’. We must know that not all life with plenty of goods (material) is in fact good. Never ask to walk into another person shoes, for you do not know which path they took.

GOWEEKLY 07 2016 COVER STORY

Shirma Rouse Shirma Rouse is a singer’s singer. Music flows through her veins and it transforms into a powerful voice that can be compared to the greatest to ever do it. Even though she has accomplished a lot in her career, like singing with Chaka Khan, Michael Bolton and the Metropole Orchestra, and successfully participating in the Voice of Holland to name a few, she is now on her way to conquering the world. Her third album “Shout it Out Loud” is her most personal yet, with songs that will make you smile, cry, laugh and dance. Shirma spoke to us about life, music and her booming career. Text: Hayson Nicholls Photography by: Uriel Symor

“If I weren’t a singer I would love to help more people in need”.

Out Loud!

COVER STORY GOWEEKLY 07 2016

You have accomplished a lot in your career thus far. What are you the proudest of? ‘I am very happy and proud that my music is played in Japan and that I am able to tour in Japan. The funny thing is that they don’t understand a word I am singing, but they appreciate the music. That is so surreal. I am going on tour again in April.’

What do you do besides music? ‘I read, watch series on Netflix and I love to cook and eat. Sushi and chicken are my favorites. I have a concept called “Shirma’s Soul Kitchen” where once a month I cook soul food and sing for a select group of people. I provide both the food and entertainment.’

Location: Mundo Bizarro

Tell us about Shirma Rouse. ‘I am a singer, a teacher and a producer. I got in touch with music through my family. My father is a musician and a music engineer, both my grandmothers where church singers. I knew from a very early age that I wanted to be a singer too. I was always in awe when I saw my grandmother get on stage at the church and people became mesmerized by her presence and voice. I wanted that too and that’s how it all started.

When did you realize that you could really sing? ‘It might seem crazy, but I always knew that I could sing. It was when I moved to the Netherlands that I realized how well I could

sing. I was studying chemistry, so I never thought to make singing my career. More and more people were telling me to pursue a music career because they thought I was really good. I eventually listened and here I am now.’

Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with? ‘I admire a lot of artists. My dream collaboration would be with Bob Marley, who unfortunately is not amongst us anymore. His music is a great inspiration to me. Gregory Porter is also on my list and fortunately I was able to sing with him at a concert, but I would like to do it all over again. I still have Justin Timberlake on my collaboration to do list as well.’

What would you be if you weren’t a singer? ‘I would be a coach, in the psychiatric field. I am an ambassador an organization called Stichting Dushi that helps children that have been abused and neglected. I love making a difference for these children. So if I weren’t a singer I would love to help more people in need.’

What does the future hold for Shirma Rouse? ‘I am extremely happy where I am right now. I am currently writing a book. My new album “Shout it Out Loud” is out right now. I am taking life as it comes. I don’t have dreams, I make things happen. I wanted to tour so I made it happen. I am touring Jerusalem, Indonesia and Japan this year. Your future is in your hands. You have to create your own future. Set your goals and go for it.”

To hop on a small boat, go off into sea and start fishing is something I have always wanted to do. I recently had my first fishing experience and though most of the time you just wait to catch something, I’d say I enjoyed myself… a lot! Editor: Shari Jourdain

No materialistic stuff allowed Okay, so fishing equipment is materialistic too but you get my point. To really enjoy fishing and to be in the moment, you should leave your pretty clothes, smartphones and other digital stuff at home. Apart from the fact that it might get wet and damaged, you wouldn’t want to be on your phone the whole time during an activity like this.

Catch of the day What greater joy than to have fish for dinner on the same day you caught it? After a whole day fishing, believe me, you’ll be hungry. Though I only caught a fish or two during my boat trip, I’m still proud of my catch. I’m ready to go catch some more… wanna join?
