Jewish Heritage

Jewish Culture and Information Center Mėsinių St. 3

Vilnius was once called the Jerusalem of the North and was home to many famous Jewish scholars and rabbis who lived and worked to create a rich and diverse culture over the 700 years of their presence. The Vilna Gaon was the most famous scholar from Vilnius and a preeminent 18th-century leader renowned for his immense intellectual influence on Jewish law and mysticism.

THE GREAT VILNIUS GHETTO

The ghetto existed from 6 September 1941 to 23 September 1943, within the boundaries of Lydos, Rūdninkų, Mėsinių, Ašmenos, Žemaitijos, Dysnos, Šiaulių and Ligoninės streets. There were about 29,000 Jews living in it; most of them were murdered in Paneriai. Today, 23 September is a day reserved for commemorating the Jewish Genocide in Lithuania.

THE GLASS QUARTER

In a 1633 document, Ladislaus IV Vasa granted Jews the privilege of establishing their own quarter in Vilnius. The Glass Quarter was one of the most vibrant of the city’s arteries with the Great Synagogue as its most important building. Today, the quarter retains the memory of its former Jewish heritage.

THE SMALL GHETTO

In the 17th century, the intersection of Stiklių, Gaono and Žydų Streets was filled with Jewish merchants. During the Nazi occupation of Lithuania, the Jewish Quarter was turned into the Small Ghetto with 11,000 Jews. The Small Ghetto was liquidated and the vast majority of its inhabitants were murdered on 21 October 1941.

Saunas

A TRADITION ROOTED IN CULTURE AND HEALING

Saunas, locally known as “pirtis,” hold a sacred place in Lithuanian culture, dating back centuries. More than a wellness activity, they are intertwined with spiritual and communal life. Historically, saunas were central gathering spots for celebrations, where people performed cleansing rituals, and welcomed newborns into the world. While some traditions have faded, saunas in Lithuania remain an essential part of life, experiencing a revival as places for gathering and well-being.

Day Trips from Vilnius

TRAKAI

Trakai is the moment when a simple day trip turns into a story you didn’t expect to find so close to Vilnius. As soon as you arrive, the island castle rises from Lake Galvė like something out of a legend, especially magical in winter when the water freezes into a glassy sheet.

KERNAVĖ

It’s a place that makes you stop midstep, unsure whether you’ve stumbled into nature’s artwork or a memory of something ancient. The five hill forts rise gently around you, inviting you to climb their wooden stairs and take in the sweeping views of the Neris River valley.

LENTVARIS

What makes Lentvaris special is the feeling you get when you turn a corner and suddenly see the Neo-Gothic palace rising above the park. The lake adds another layer of calm; its still water reflects the palace so perfectly that you might find yourself stopping more than once just to take it in.

TRAKŲ VOKĖ MANOR

Žalioji st. 2A

Trakų Vokė Manor once belonged to Tyszkiewicz family. Today’s manor ensemble includes a palace decorated with columns, a bell tower with two towers, the Tyszkiewicz Mausoleum, the only stables in Lithuania with neoBaroque features, and other buildings.

Vilnius Historic Centre –UNESCO World Heritage Area

Vilnius, the political and cultural centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 13th to the 18th century, is an outstanding example of a city where Eastern and Western European cultures meet. The Historic Centre evolved over a period of five centuries and is one of the largest preserved historic centres in Europe, covering an area of 360 hectares. With its 112 quarters, the Old Town presents an authentic medieval network of streets, urban structures and impressive historical buildings in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles. Its current silhouette complements its historic multicultural urban context. For centuries, Vilnius has been home to Lithuanian, Jewish, Polish, Russian, German, Belarusian, Karaite and Tatar communities. The Vilnius Historic Centre was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
