I hope you enjoy this issue of The Arch Annual Report. You will find updates on the performance of our endowment, our annual donor recognition, and exciting new developments in the making. The Foundation staff enjoys the opportunity to share stories of campus activities along with the impact your philanthropic interests have made on Mines.

Over the past five years, the Foundation Board has had the privilege of having Lorin Brass serving as Chairman. Throughout his tenure, Lorin provided the leadership to achieve many significant accomplishments. Under his guidance and leadership, the Board of Trustees is truly engaged in the mission of the Foundation. We are building relationships with many alumni and friends to assist in advancing Mines as a sought-out engineering, science, and technology university. Leveraging the collective talents and resources of the community, we can continue to play an important role in developing tomorrow’s leaders.

This past year was certainly a time of growth for the Foundation. We have seen increased collaboration with the Rapid City community, enhanced corporate interactions, and continued financial support to the university. We are greatly appreciative of our alumni and friends who helped make this happen.

On behalf of the Foundation, thank you Lorin for your tireless efforts and significant contributions during your tenure as Chairman. You have provided an excellent example for us to follow. The SD Mines Foundation would like to extend our biggest thanks to Lorin Brass (MetE 75) for his service as Chairman of the Board of Trustees over the past five years.

“We have never received more from a Chairman than we have from Lorin Brass. The changes have been like night and day. I do not know if we could ever do enough to acknowledge his contributions,” said Todd Kenner, the incoming Chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees.

Lorin has been a member of the Foundation Board for the last ten years. During his tenure as Chairman, Lorin led the transformation through three university presidents and two Foundation presidents. He also took on the dual role of Foundation president and Chairman while the search for a new Foundation president was underway.

Lorin was instrumental in leading the search and recruitment of Joel Kincart, the current Foundation president, the adoption of best management practices for budgeting, emphasizing transparency, increased trustee engagement, improved relationships with the Alumni Association and Hardrock Club, and innovative partnering with the university to meet growing student housing needs.

“Lorin’s dedication to the Foundation over the past years has been nothing short of remarkable. He set the bar very high for future Foundation trustees and team members. A lot couldn’t have been done without the support from his wife Mary (CE 77). Both gave up a significant amount of their time to fulfill the dream of a stronger Foundation and university,” said Mike Selzer, Regional Development Officer, SD Mines Foundation.

On behalf of SD Mines Foundation, it is with great appreciation that we thank Lorin for the tremendous job he accomplished during his term as Chairman of the Foundation. We wish him the very best in his future endeavors and look forward to his ongoing involvement in SD Mines.

Because of you and your generous support, SD Mines was able to provide over 1,000 students with both academic and athletic scholarships totaling over $2,979,000 during the 2015-2016 school year.

Elizabeth Sailer joined the Foundation team this summer, bringing almost twenty years of experience in fundraising, community relations, and donor development. A Mines graduate, “Liz” is excited to be back on campus working for her alma mater.

Can you tell us a little about your background in fundraising?

I served as the Executive Director of a small Big Brothers Big Sisters organization in Iowa which required a lot of fund development. Most recently I spent fifteen years as the Development Director for the YMCA of Rapid City.

What is your connection to SD Mines?

I graduated from Mines in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Sciences with a pre-med emphasis.

What would you say most motivates you to do what you do?

I have dedicated my career trying to create opportunities for people to enhance their lives. It’s wonderful to play a small role in helping people achieve their goals or reach their fullest potential.

What is most rewarding about your job?

Working with people! We have wonderful, supportive alumni and incredibly talented students.

What are you most excited or passionate about?

Helping to make a positive difference in people’s lives.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working hard and raising money?

I love spending time with our daughter and her family, working in my yard, and riding our motorcycle with my husband.

Anything else you want readers to know?

My husband and I grew up together and both graduated from the School of Mines. We spent about 10 years living in Texas and Iowa, but were able to fulfill our dream of moving back to Black Hills in 2000. We have four goofy dogs so there is never a dull moment at our house.

CONNECT The Surbeck Center expansion and the new Alumni Center will create a hub of campus where students, alumni, friends, and the community can come together.

STUDY The Surbeck Center is a place students go to study, socialize, and find the resources they need to be successful. The Surbeck Center expansion will provide spaces that support student collaboration and promote excellence.

TUTOR Launched in fall 2016, the Student Success Center works in partnership with instructors and faculty advisors in each department to support students through the hardest classes at Mines. Students can access free tutoring and attend workshops on topics such as time management and learning strategies.

DINE The Surbeck Center expansion will accommodate additional seating for 300 students. When not used for dining, this space will serve as a student lounge and study area.

GATHER The Gail and Guy March Alumni Center will give our graduates a place to call home. This warm and welcoming building will showcase the accomplishments and memories of Mines alumni and the history and traditions of the university.

Surbeck Center

EXPANSION

When the Surbeck Center was constructed in 1961 as the hub for student interaction and gatherings, enrollment was 989 students. Today there are over 2,800 students enrolled with expected growth to 3,500 students by 2022.

ALUMNI CENTER

Guy March had the vision to establish both the Alumni Association and the Foundation to advance the School of Mines. Similarly, we now have the vision to construct the Gail and Guy March Alumni Center where the Alumni Association and the Foundation will be located and, as important, to provide a modern and inviting place that will serve the needs of alumni, faculty, administration, and students.

With Foundation staff offices on the top floor, the bottom floor will feature a variety of spaces, including the Alumni Association offices, meeting and conference rooms, a large event area, and a catering kitchen. The Proposed Alumni Center will have its own dedicated parking for convenience.

Privately funded through charitable donations, construction will begin when all funds have been secured.

Thanks to alumni and friends of SD Mines for your generous support of the university. I want to extend a special thanks to those who have established an endowment. Everyone’s support helps Mines produce future engineers, scientists, and leaders.

The investment committee continues to work with our investment advisor, INNOVEST, to obtain reasonable returns, while at the same time reducing risk. Last year, we switched some funds from actively managed to index funds.

In August 2016, the investment committee voted unanimously to replace most actively managed stock funds with index funds. With this action, 80 percent of our equity funds will be indexed. Few actively managed funds have been able to outperform index funds in recent years. Index funds have shown higher returns with lower fees.

The investment committee also voted to gradually replace hedge funds with fixed income funds. Hedge funds over the last several years have not been able to outperform fixed income funds. In addition, fees for hedge funds are significantly higher than for bond funds.

Our investment return this fiscal year was a negative 2.5 percent. This follows returns of 1.8 percent for FY15, 14.2 percent for FY14 and 10.4 percent for FY13. Investment returns have averaged 4.5 percent per year over the past five years. The breakdown by asset class and the performance of each class and its comparison to the benchmark can be viewed in the Endowment Portfolio by Asset Class chart.

STUDENT

SUCCESS CENTER

Launched this fall, and modeled after other successful campus programs, the new Student Success Center is designed to be a one-stop-shop for students to study, receive professional and peer support, or just hang out with friends.

Centrally located within the Surbeck Center, in the former Alumni Association space, students taking advantage of the new center are close to resources like counseling, ADA services, and the Career and Professional Development Center.

Many other universities have implemented similar programs to address low retention rates and student engagement with proven results.

Change is not always easy, but Lisa Carlson, Director of the Student Success Center, is looking to change the conversation about the need for help transitioning to college. She wants students to know “they have someone in their corner,� that there is a place to connect with others and to find academic assistance to ease them into Mines. Carlson, who relaunched the Women in Science & Engineering (WiSE) program to support female engineering students on campus, is taking the concept of a proven program to design a customized approach for students at Mines.

Initially, the focus of the Student Success Center will be on freshmen and sophomores, as well as those seeking a pre-health professional pathway.

Tyg Long, the freshman/sophomore student success advisor, will help identify at-risk undergraduates early in the semester and assist them in connecting with and using the appropriate resources on campus.

Erica Haller-Stevenson joined the team as the pre-health pathways advisor to help expand resources to one of the

fastest-growing areas on campus.

One of Carlson’s long-term goals is to eliminate the stigma of asking for help.

She is introducing new initiatives like “Tutors on Tour” which brings tutors to the students at places on campus, instead of having them come to the tutoring center. “Sunday Crunch,” a weekend study session with the added bonus of a cereal bar, is already successful and needs a larger space to accommodate the crowd of students who are attending the weekly event.

Carlson is looking to build partnerships and identify new ways of using and combining resources to help students. An enhanced partnership with the math department and faculty who lead the MathSpark readiness program is underway to help students overcome math barriers.

Looking ahead, Carlson sees the potential to help more students. The planned Surbeck Center expansion will include a much larger space for the Student Success Center, allowing for more tutoring and testing areas, room for additional staff to assist upperclassmen, and an expanded prehealth advising program. Workshops on topics such as leadership, career choices, and learning styles will also be offered.

Other offices under the direction of the Student Success Center include the Tech Learning Center, which offers additional tutoring options and testing, and the WiSE program. WiSE supports students through networking, outreach, and professional development.
