Suggestions on what to pack Although Louisville experiences four distinct seasons, summer tends to come early, fall lasts longer, and the relatively short winters bring more rain than snow. March is usually the wettest month, October the driest. Whatever season finds you visiting the city, the trip will be made better by packing the right things to wear. • Spring can have warm days but cool nights can linger. To stay warm, long sleeve shirts or light sweaters are suggested. An umbrella, raincoat and light jacket may also come in handy. • Summer can be very hot and humid. Bright, light clothing is a must. • Fall, like spring, can have fluctuating temperatures between day and night, so pack sweaters or light jackets. • Layering is the key to the winter months. Long sleeves, sweaters, medium to heavy coats, hat and gloves should be included if traveling to the city in winter. Any time of the year, there are some things that will make your stay even better. Don’t forget to bring a comfortable pair of shoes for visiting Louisville’s many attractions. To protect your skin, bring sunscreen rated SPF15 or higher. Just as you would do when traveling anywhere, if you have allergies bring along the appropriate medications. This is especially important if traveling to the area in spring or fall when allergy irritants can be especially high.

We can suggest themed tours that appeal to a broad range of interests, or make suggestions to customize an itinerary to make sure all the places you want to include on your visit to Louisville and the surrounding areas are included. Assistance can also be provided in planning itineraries for special niche markets, such as student tours and religious groups.

LOUISVILLE FACTOIDS For over 140 years, the world has turned to Churchill Downs the first Saturday in May for the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing, the Kentucky Derby. Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron and Johnny Bench are just a few of the baseball legends who have used the Hillerich & Bradsby Company’s Louisville Slugger. The Belle of Louisville, at over 100 years old, is the oldest operating Mississippi-style stern wheeler steamboat in existence today. Burgoo, especially popular in Louisville during Derby season, is a thick stew made with beef, chicken, venison and plenty of vegetables (usually anything you can find). The Hot Brown originated at the Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville, which was a popular gathering place during the 1920s. The open-faced turkey and bacon sandwich is topped with a rich cheese sauce. Imagine gracious Southern Belles at an afternoon tea in the summer. What would they serve in Louisville? Tiny sandwiches of Benedictine, a spread made of cream cheese, chopped cucumber and a touch of green food coloring. Jennie Benedict, a proprietor of a popular Louisville tearoom, was the first to serve it. The Mint Julep is revived as Louisville’s cocktail of choice each year as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. It’s a powerful concoction of sugar, water, crushed ice, bourbon and mint.
Modjeska, a candy treat, originated in Louisville by candy maker Anton Busath. This specially made marshmallow dipped in liquid caramel was named in honor of famed Polish actress Helena Modjeska after Busath saw her perform a play in Louisville. The Old Fashioned cocktail is another part of Louisville’s lore. It is said that a bartender, in a sudden burst of inspiration, tossed a few dashes of bitters into a glass of whiskey. Later, a dash of sugar and bit of lemon peel were added. The Old Fashioned has been named the Official Cocktail of Louisville. Derby Pie®, a concoction of walnuts, chocolate chips, sugar and a few other special ingredients, is so popular it is registered by trademark. When you order “whiskey” in Louisville you usually get bourbon, one of the region’s home products. 95% of all bourbon is made in Kentucky. Louisville has been named as one of the “best foodie getaways in the world” by Zagat.

Celebrating over 100 years, the Belle of Louisville is the oldest Mississippistyle steamboat still in operation in the world. She also claims the distinction of being a National Historic Landmark. The Belle was originally commissioned the Idlewild. In 1914, she served as a packet boat for many years carrying passengers and freight on America’s inland waters. In 1962, she was purchased by the city and refurbished back to her original splendor. The boat has three decks and can carry over 600 passengers. Public cruises are offered Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Spirit of Jefferson is the Belle’s “baby sister.” Built in 1963, the Spirit looks like an authentic steamboat, with the paddle wheel and tall stacks, but she is diesel powered. The Spirit can accommodate 300 passengers and offers public cruises year-round.

The Conrad/Caldwell House is an extraordinary example of Victorian Romanesque Revival architecture. The Thomas Edison Museum House is located in the Butchertown National Historic District. Just after the Civil War, Thomas Edison rented a single room in this simple cottage during part of the one and one-half years he worked in Louisville as a telegrapher for Western Union. Built in the 1850’s, the structure is one of few remaining shotgun duplexes in the area. Farmington was constructed in 1815, with the home’s design taken from plans by Thomas Jefferson. No house in Kentucky more embodies Federal architecture than Farmington. Built circa 1837, the house stands as a testament to the important role agriculture, along the river, played in the development of our country. Two upper middle class farm families, the Farnsleys and, later, the Moremens, brought the Riverside property to life by cultivating the fields and trading on the river. Today, visitors to Riverside may tour the historic house and grounds to get a glimpse into what life was like on this beautiful 19th century Ohio River farm. Whitehall, thought to have been built circa 1855, began as a modest twostory brick house in the Italianate style popular during the mid-19th century. Through the years, and various owners, the house has been renovated and expanded into its present day grandeur. Upon the death of the last owner, the house, gardens and many of the unique furnishings were bequeathed to the Historic Homes Foundation of Louisville to be shared with the public. Whitehall was extensively refurbished in 1994. The gardens of Whitehall are the centerpiece of the home and make it a popular place for outdoor weddings. There are four separate gardens – an arboretum, the Woodlawn Fern Garden, a Formal Florentine Gardena a Specimen Garden.

SHAKER VILLAGE OF PLEASANT HILL (approximately two hours east of Louisville) Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill The restored Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is a living history museum where the tangible reminders of an extraordinary life are preserved. Shaker Village is America’s finest, largest, and most completely restored Shaker community and living museum. Shaker Village provides you the chance to discover the magic of simplicity – in architecture, furniture, and daily activities – as intended by its founders more than a century ago.
My Old Kentucky Home State Park Among the many compositions penned by American composer Stephen Foster are “Oh! Susanna” and “Beautiful Dreamer.” Best known of all is “My Old Kentucky Home,” Kentucky’s state song. The supposed inspiration for Foster’s melody was his cousin’s plantation, Federal Hill, now the focal point of My Old Kentucky Home State Park. The historic home has rare period furnishings, formal gardens, a carriage house and smoke house, with costumed guides in hoop skirts and tailcoats.
LINCOLN LANDSCAPE (Hodgenville, KY, is the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and is an hour southwest of Louisville) Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site An early 19th century Kentucky cabin, symbolic of the one in which Lincoln was born, is preserved in a memorial building at the site of his birth. Climb the memorial’s 56 steps, one for each year of Lincoln’s life, and visit the “Sinking Spring” where the Lincoln family drew water.

Berea Located 30 miles south of Lexington, Berea is a picturesque small town in Central Kentucky and is synonymous with rich Appalachian traditions, arts, crafts and music. Known as the Arts and Craft capital of the State, Berea is bustling with shops, studios and galleries. Make sure you stop into the historic Boone Tavern Hotel and Restaurant located in the heart of the city.
FORT KNOX AREA (approximately 45 minutes southwest of Louisville) General George Patton Museum and Center of Leadership. This museum is one of the largest museums in the U.S. Army system. Many personal effects of General George Patton are displayed along with American and foreign armored fighting vehicles, uniforms and weapons.
The Abbey of Gethsemani Bourbon Heritage Center Located at Heaven Hill Distillery, this state-of-the-art center provides visitors with the ultimate educational and entertainment experience in the making and the history of what was designated “America’s Native Spirit” by Congress. Old Talbott Tavern Talbott Tavern is said to be the oldest western stagecoach stop in America as the westward expansion brought explorers from the east into Kentucky. According to legend, figures straight from the history books sought lodging here during their travels. Abraham Lincoln and his family stayed here, as did General George Rogers Clark and Daniel Boone. There are noticeable bullet holes in the now faded paintings and Jesse James is said to be responsible for them. The Abbey of Gethsemani Founded in 1848, the Abbey of Gethsemani is the largest and oldest Order of Cistercian Monks in the U.S. The Trappist Monastery was home to Thomas Merton and is known today for its delicious fruitcakes and cheeses.
AROUND LEXINGTON (approximately one hour east of Louisville) Kentucky Horse Park A working horse farm with 1,200 acres surrounded by 30 miles of white plank fencing, the Kentucky Horse Park is like none other in the world. Dedicated to man’s relationship with the horse, the park features two outstanding museums, twin theaters and nearly 50 different breeds of horses. Old Friends Beginning in 2000, Old Friends became a retirement and rescue facility for pensioned Thoroughbreds. After the news broke in 2002 of the inconceivable death of Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand in a Japanese slaughterhouse, Old Friends became the place where at risk racehorses – those whose racing and breeding careers have come to an end – came to live out their days in a dignified retirement in a manner they deserve. By promoting these one-time celebrated horses through a campaign of education and tourism, attention can be drawn to all retired Thoroughbreds and all equines in need. Tours are hosted daily.
West Point Located just minutes from Fort Knox, West Point is one of Kentucky’s oldest cities and is rich with Civil War history. It is here you can visit Fort Duffield, an earthen fort built by Union soldiers in 1861. The Bridges to the Past is a one-mile walk, along the old L & N Turnpike, that includes three pre-Civil War stone bridges. Knob Creek Gun Range Knob Creek Gun Range is Kentucky’s premier outdoor shooting range. It is a family-owned business with three generations of the founding family working there. The Range offers a safe place for target shooting, educational classes and firearm education. Gun safety is practiced at all times in the shop and on the range.
