Beyond their enforcement responsibilities, these officers often serve as cultural ambassadors. Many foreigners experience Thailand through their interactions with the Immigration Police, gaining insights into the nation’s warmth and friendliness right from their arrival.

Go Thailand Go had the honor to interview Police Lieutenant Colonel Kamontip Kemnark, Inspector of Investigation Immigration, Division 2 and Police Sub Lieutenant Kongchanok Suwannadis, Inspector of Division 2.

The officers of the Thai Immigration

Police are the first persons visitors to the kingdom meet when they arrive. What is the immigration department doing to ensuring a positive experience for visitors to Thailand?

We do realize that our people are the first personal experience when people enter the Kingdom. We also try to inform the travelers to advice them personally about when they need to leave our country, but honestly, that depends also on how many people are waiting in line. We, continuously, train our people to have a positive attitude all the time. For these training we organize regularly seminars/trainings for our people to keep the standard as good as possible.

What safety measures and precautions are in place to ensure the well-being of foreigners in Thailand?

It is in all our interest that foreigners who visit Thailand, or foreigners who live in Thailand, feel always comfortable. It is not about measures or precautions, it’s about informing what people can do in specific situations. We try to be as transparent as possible.

How does the immigration department handle lost or stolen belongings, aside from passports?

When people lose belongings, such as a wallet, camera, etc., we recommend to go to the nearest police station and report the lost items. Normally, the travel insurance request a police report to be able to pay the insurance amount to the customer. In case you lose your passport, it’s very important to report this at the nearest police station as soon as possible. With the police report, the people can apply for a new passport at their Embassy or Consulate General. With the police report and the new passport the people can do a request for visa extension to avoid an overstay.

Can you provide information on the procedures for registering a residential address as a foreigner in Thailand?

Every foreigner who resides in Thailand need to file his/her residential address at the Immigration Department every 90 days. The first time, this report needs to be done, with a special document that needs to be signed by the owner of the property where the foreigner resides.

Are there any cultural norms or local laws that expatriates should particularly aware of to ensure they integrate well into Thai society?

The Thai culture is in many ways different from other (western) cultures. A religious place you don’t enter with shoes, you don’t tap a person on the head. Don’t point to people with your foot etc.

How does the immigration department collaborate with other government agencies to ensure the overall safety and security of foreigners in Thailand?

The immigration police collaborates very close with the other police departments as there is the tourist police, municipality police, embassies, airlines etc., but also with courthouses and prosecutors.

Can you share insights into the current security measures at border crossings and airports for smoother entry and exit procedures?

We acknowledge, especially during “peak-hours” the long waiting times at the border. That’s why we introduced the automatic passport

check out for departuring people at the airports. People just scan their passport and, if approved, they can leave the Kingdom. In practice the travelers safe 6070% time. It’s not only a matter of time, but also a matter of annoying waiting that can be avoided with this new system. For arriving travelers the automatic system is also in use, but so far only for Thai passport holders. We are studying on the possibilities to make this also possible for passport holders with a valid visa.

What steps should a foreigner take if they need to extend their stay due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a family emergency or health issues?

This kind of situations are, of course, very sad for the people involved. But, we can assure you, that there is no any hassle to

extend your stay. As soon as the persons involved are able, they go to the nearest Immigration Office, with a hospital report and the extension will be approved. Please, don’t wait till the date that you depart, because that might be challenging. But actually, we need to inform you that it’s always up to the immigration officer how to deal with a possible overstay, as a result, the gullibility of our employees is abused.

Can you provide information on the measures taken to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable populations, including foreign workers?

Signaling possible human trafficking is a very important task of the Thai Immigration Police. Whether people enter or leave the country. Our people pay attention to all signals/characteristics that may be related to human trafficking. We regularly train our teams on this and also to ask the “right” questions, to be able to be sure that the situation is satisfactory.

Can you share insights to the most hilarious and the most difficult experience during your career as Immigration Official?

We told already that sometimes we experience hilarious/funny things....not too long ago, a foreigner handed over his passport, with a little bit a blushing face. In that case, normally, we are extra alert. And guess what, it appeared that the 3 year old daughter of the traveler, used the passport of her dad as a drawing book. The lovely girl, really used every single page of the passport. It was hilarious but also sad for the travelers. Because, unfortunately, we cannot let people leave the country with this travel document. So, we arranged a fast visit to their Embassy and the traveler was able to get an emergency passport and was able to travel one day later to his home country.

A passport is a very important travel document: never write or draw in the passport and never put stamps in the passport, others then the stamps of Embassies, Consulates General or Immigration Officials.

A few months ago a difficult situation arose: a foreign traveler had an overstay of 2 days. Also because he wanted to pass passport control around 2 a.m., and 2 hours after midnight means 1 extra day. The foreign traveler disagreed and started shouting at our immigration officer. Moreover, he started insulting our immigration officer and became violent. So, we arrested this aggressive man

and prosecuted him for overstaying and violence against our officer. You understand that we can never tolerate this kind of behavior. Fortunately, these types of situations are exceptions.

Instructions

In a medium pot, heat the coconut oil over medium heat.

Add the onion, garlic, jalapeno, galangal, lemongrass, and red curry paste and cook. Stir frequently, for 5 minutes, or until onions are softened

Add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes.

Strain out the aromatics (the garlic, onions, lemongrass, and ginger) and discard.

Add in coconut cream or milk, chicken breast , and mushrooms.

Simmer until chicken breast pieces are just cooked through, then add fish sauce, coconut sugar, and lime juice, plus more of each to taste

Cook 2 minutes, then ladle into serving bowls and top with sliced green onions and fresh cilantro.

Serve immediately.
