Announcements: Any announcement from the auction block will take precedence over written information in the sale book.

Liability: The owners, sale management or sale barn owners assume no responsibility for accidents, injury or stolen property. All buyers attend the sale at their own risk. The sellers are not responsible for any accident or injury to the animal after it is sold.

Bidding Disputes: The auctioneer will settle any bidding disputes and his ruling is final.

Care Program: We are more than happy to take the bulls home for you and keep them free of charge until April 15th, we will then semen test and deliver to your place within a reasonable distance. However if you opt to take your bull home with you sale day we will give you a discount of $50.

Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as it is declared sold.

Breeding Guarantee: All bulls are guaranteed to be breeders. It will be the responsibility of the purchaser to have these bulls semen tested before they are turned out with cows or before 15 months of age, whichever comes first. If they are semen checked under these terms, and found to be non-breeders, exercising options for adjustments apply.

Retained Ownership: Sellers retain 1/4 semen revenue sharing interest in all bulls. Purchaser will own 100% of the possession of the animal and salvage value of the animal. Any announcements from the block will take precedence to printed material.

Volume Discount: Buy 3 or more bulls receive a 5% discount.

Exercising Options for Adjustments: 1. The purchaser must notify the seller of their dissatisfaction for that particular animal in writing within six (6) months of the sale date.

2. In the event the animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the purchaser may return the animal to the seller’s farm at the purchasers expense, if the animal is in good condition. The seller is then entitled to a three (3) month trial following return of the animal at which time he will have the opportunity to determine the animals breeding ability. If at the end of three (3) months the animal is found to be a non-breeder, the seller shall have the option to replace the animal with another of similar quality or to refund the purchase price.

The Melroe and Lehrman families again welcome you to the Annual Profit Through Performance Sale. We need to start by expressing our appreciation to all the past customers and bidders on this sale. We also look forward to any new friends we might meet in 2018. It is also important that we welcome Jordan and Amanda Holt and their contribution to this sale as well.

As has been typical here the Windy Creek offering has been managed at the Lehrman’s near Spencer with the Melroe and Holt bulls being fed in North Dakota. Both operations have managed their bulls as they would expect their customers feeder cattle to be run. Rather than get heavy on details here, we have tried to take some time to describe the purpose for these cattle prior to each breed lineup. Overall, we hope you appreciate the value these Continental genetics have on both your cowherds’ and the bottom line when cattle go on feed. If anyone tells you heterosis isn’t real, remember it is fake news!

If you would like to view the cattle ahead of time, contact the respective ranches. The cattle will be available for viewing in Aberdeen all day on Saturday, March 3rd and sale morning. If you would like to join us for supper the night before, let us know – we would love to host you and get a chance to visit. We will also be serving lunch at the barn on sale day. At Windy Creek Cattle Company we strive for performance driven cattle. Surelock has been our go to bull for the past few years for adding power and pounds to our bull offering. Consistency and productivity are a common theme within this sire group. Time and time again they hit the scales hard at weaning and continue to excel while on test. The exciting news is this year the other sire groups we utilize have done a tremendous job as well in those categories. Our goal is to continue to bring you cattle that can work in various programs. Whether you are in the business of backgrounding, finishing or raising replacement females we keep you the customer in mind. Many of the bulls in our offering go back to some of the first Simmental genetics we acquired. Meaning those dams have consistently produced high performing functional cattle that work for our customers. The Data Because every operation has different management schemes and environmental challenges, we feel the most effective way to compare the performance of cattle is through accurately measuring desired traits, turning that data into the association, and select for the EPD we are trying to influence. EPDs are a means of comparing individuals.

The weaning weights reported in this catalog on all the Melroe and Windy Creek bulls has been turned in to their respective associations where they are adjusted to a common 205 days of age. Yearling weights on the Melroe and Windy Creek bulls have been adjusted using the formula recommended the Beef Improvement Federation, and used breed associations. The cattle offered here are from the very front end of their respective bull crops.

Adjusted Weaning Weight = (((Actual Weaning Weight – Birth Weight)/Days of Age) * 205) + Birth Weight + Age of Dam Adjustment

You will see that all the EPDs this year also identify cattle that are in the top third of their breed for each respective trait.

This should allow you to quickly identify the elite individuals for the traits you are pursuing.

The EPDs on the Melroe and Windy Creek bulls have been calculated based on their actual performance and reflect the Spring 2018 run. Because of our contemporary grouping and generations of data records they are higher in accuracy, thus a more reliable measure of their predicted performance.

CE – Calving Ease – Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. A higher number would suggest less calving difficulty.

BW – Birth Weight – Weight, in pounds, at calving. Bulls with lower EPDs would suggest lighter birth weights on average.

WW – Weaning Weight – Weight, in pounds, at 205 days of age. A higher EPD means we would expect more weaning weight.

YW – Yearling Weight – Weight, in pounds, at 365 days of age. A higher EPD means we would expect more weight at a year of age.

Milk – Difference in weaning weight of offspring due to milk.

API – All Purpose Index – Suggests the use of sires on Angus cows and first-calf heifers, with a portion of their daughters retained, and all remaining offspring put on feed and sold on a grid rewarding grade and yield.
