A delightful inheritance

IN THIS 125TH anniversary year, we pause and wonder at the heritage that we have received,

and consider how we are shaping that heritage in this time for the coming generations.

Goshen College was brought into being by ordinary people like us, who were extraordinary servant leaders. They were motivated by their own joy in learning and the possibility to create something new at the intersection of the tradition of Mennonite church, the locality of Elkhart County and the optimism of the late 19th century.

What have we inherited from these founders and servant leaders?

We inherited enthusiasm. Joining the teaching faculty of the Elkhart Institute in 1898, historian C. Henry Smith “faced the future with the enthusiasm born of hope and youthful confidence.” One of Goshen’s founders, John S. Coffman, described the Elkhart Institute as the “welling up of a pent-up stream that could no longer be suppressed. Disadvantages, opposition, fears of failure, all had to give way before the force that was driven into action by the deep consciousness of duty to God, to the church, to our young people, and to the cause of Christ in general.”

We inherited Christian faith and the vision that “the men and women going out from

Goshen College would be armed with a character that will never shrink from maintaining true principles, a trust that relies solely on the favor of God for success,” said Coffman. The commitments of Goshen College to Christian discipleship in general and to the Mennonite church in particular are an enduring inheritance. That these commitments have been questioned in every era of our history is evidence of their aliveness. We did not inherit faith that is sleepy or taken for granted, but a faith that is curious, growing and unafraid of struggle.

We inherited engagement with the world. In 1903, President Noah Byers declared: “Let our

motto be, Culture for Service.” It still is and we should not underestimate the radical nature of this motto. Goshen’s enduring commitment to service and to interconnectedness with local and global communities has been held in tension with academic and church culture.

In the face of the academic tendency to be elite and intellectual, Byers exhorted Goshen College not to produce “an aristocracy of cultivated parasites.” And in the face of the Mennonite church’s tendency to stand apart from society, J. Lawrence Burkholder asked in 1955 as a young professor: “Shall we go on and take a responsible position in society, or completely withdraw and become a sect in the stricter sense of the word?” Goshen College has over and over voted with minds, hearts and hands to engage and serve the world.

We inherited freedom, as Smith said in 1899, “…not because old habits of thinking are

always wrong … but because without this freedom growth is impossible …” Seven decades later, Ruth Krall, the founding professor of our women and gender studies program, asked her students: “What do you want to learn? What do you need to learn? And where do you want to look?” The freedom of Goshen College is grounded in our trust in truth and grace, and our openness to the diverse goodness of God’s Creation.

In the language of Psalm 16:6, we have “a goodly heritage,” a delightful inheritance in fact, and we are eager to steward it into the future.

About the cover (front and back) While Goshen College’s official beginnings in August 1894 as the Elkhart Institute were 12 miles away from the current campus (p. 56), the move to Goshen in 1903 saw new buildings that still stand and are central to the campus (front cover, 1915), even as much has changed.

The college has transformed and been transformed by the community it has called home for 125 years, while remaining Elkhart County’s only private, residential college.

The back cover shows the opposite perspective from that same time: from a rooftop (probably of the Administration Building) looking past the Aurora Gate, up 8th Street and towards the City of Goshen. Study-Service Term transitions from Peru to Ecuador

Another year of high marks for GC

On July 29, the final group of 15 Goshen College Study-Service Term (SST) students left Peru, officially marking the end of Goshen College’s 14-year program in the country. Since 2005, more than 600 students have traveled to Peru in 37 units, forging connections with host families, teachers, colleagues and friends that cross cultural boundaries.

Ecuador has replaced Peru as a Spanish-speaking SST location, and will also host units year-round. Goshen College is partnering with the Cofan Survival Fund and the program will be based out of Quito. The first unit departed on Aug. 28, led by Professor of Accounting Andrew Hartzler ’98 and his spouse, Ruth Hartzler ’99.

Maple Scholars dedicate summer to research This year, 14 students dedicated their summers to working on Maple Scholars summer research projects. Participants included: Xan Seymour, a junior secondary education major, worked with Jose Rocha, former associate professor of music, in gathering data behind the relationship behind music and the brain.

Goshen College experiences 26-year high for giving toward GC Fund Donors to Goshen College contributed nearly $2.2 million to the Goshen College Fund during the 2018-19 fiscal year, a 26-year high. At the close of the fiscal year on June 30, the Goshen College Fund had received $2,190,763, a 14.8 percent increase in unrestricted giving for the GC Fund over last year.

Overall giving to Goshen College totaled $4,874,781, which combines both unrestricted and designated giving.

“Our donors play an important role in supporting our mission and providing amazing opportunities for our students,” said President Rebecca Stoltzfus ’83. “Through their support, we are able to prepare students to thrive in life, leadership and service through an affordable educational experience.”

Thomas Schlabach, a senior molecular biology/biochemistry major, worked alongside Neil Detweiler ’08, assistant professor of biology, on the establishment and optimization of a protocol for the artificial expression and electrophysiological characterization of ion channels.

Martin Gerig, a senior molecular biology/ biochemistry major, and Neil Detweiler ’08, worked together in studying the comparative physiology and relative susceptibility of yak and cattle lungs to pathophysiological effects of low oxygen exposure.

Jace Longenecker, a senior history major from South Bend, worked with Philipp Gollner, assistant professor of U.S. history, to look at the religious and ethnic history of Elkhart County.

Ebithal Abdelaziz, a sophomore physics major, partnered with David Housman, professor of mathematics, to study the game theoretic models of power, cooperation and resource allocation.

Anne Buckwalter ’19 and Suzanne Ehst, associate professor of education and director of secondary education, worked together to explore the impact of Anabaptist education preparation on beginning teachers’ practice.

Renovated Union Building reopens The Union Building opened its doors in August after an eightmonth renovation project, welcoming visitors to the new Hunsberger Commons, which is home to the Hunsberger Haitian Art Collection (p. 26-27) and the relocated Juanita Lark Welcome Center, as well as an overhauled Leaf Raker Cafe (right). Laura Miller, a senior writing and English double major, worked with John Roth ’81, professor of history, to delve into the popular history of the Indonesian Mennonite Churches.

Emmy Rupp, a junior social work major, and Kelsey Winters, a senior peace, justice and conflict studies major, partnered with Anna Kurtz Kuk, assistant professor of theater, and Phil Weaver-Stoesz ’12, former technical director, to use immersive theatrical methods to train sexual misconduct response team members.

Tyler Lautenschleger, a senior molecular biology/biochemistry major, worked alongside Andy Ammons, associate professor of biology, to investigate the mosquito population dynamics and genetics as it pertains to Northern Indiana.

Kennard Martin, GC’s longestserving employee, dies at 78 Kennard Martin, 78, a campus groundsperson and longest-serving employee in the history of GC, died Aug. 29, 2019. He worked at Goshen College for 58 years.

Martin came to Goshen College in 1961 to work in the dining hall for two years for his 1-W conscientious objector alternative service. He spent 20 years doing custodial and grounds work for the Athletic Department, and 57 years later he still served the college by mowing the lawns and plowing snow.

SOFTBALL (20-33-1, 13-22-1 CL) In their first season under head coach Juliaclare Plezbert, the Maple Leafs won their first postseason game since 2004 and finished in a tie for third in the Crossroads League postseason tournament. Goshen set a number of offensive program records, including hits, runs scored, doubles and walks. Junior Emily Cummings’ (Ararat, N.C.) 73 hits were a program record for a single player in a season, as were her 15 doubles and 42 runs batted in. All told, the team prompted 44 record-book edits by finishing in the top 10 in a given statistic.

Cummings picked up all-conference honors in the pitching circle, finishing third in the Crossroads League with 73 hits and fourth with 14 wins. First-year shortstop Jessica Bachtell (Chula Vista, California) took home a certificate for honorable-mention all-conference after recording 69 hits and 41 runs batted in, each of which would have been a school record had Cummings not bettered them, and hit .385. On the defensive side, sophomore Leah Herrman (Corona, California) won the conference’s gold glove award at third base.

The Maple Leafs posted their fourth straight season with at least 19 wins and pulled a pair of upsets in the Crossroads League postseason tournament before finishing fourth. Clinton Stroble II ’19 (Newport News, Virginia) set a program record with 53 career doubles; he finished with 208 career hits and 142 runs batted in, which put him second and third in the GC baseball record book. He batted .378 to tie for the conference lead, driving in 34 runs and roping 23 extra-base hits.

Three junior classmates were named to the conference honorable-mention list: relief pitcher Colton Daniel (Cayuga, Texas), second baseman Colby Malson (Tipton, Ind.) and outfielder Ben Longacre (Barto, Pennsylvania). Daniel made 22 relief appearances, leading the team with five saves. Malson batted .309 with 50 hits, but made his biggest impact on the mound, holding opponents to a .198 average and posting a team-high six wins. Longacre hit .343 with 13 doubles, finishing among the conference’s top 10 in both categories.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD (INDOORS: 9TH IN CL; OUTDOORS: 9TH IN CL) First-year Simon Graber Miller (Goshen) set an indoor school record — clearing 6’-7½” — while qualifying for both the indoor and outdoor national championships as the Maple Leafs sent a runner, a jumper and a thrower to the NAIA’s biggest stage. Graber Miller finished 14th at indoor nationals in March and 12th at outdoor nationals in May. Sophomore Jacob Gerber (Goshen) added a top-15 finish of his own in the hammer throw, an outdoor-only event. Junior Ryan Haggerty (Freeman, South Dakota) also qualified for nationals in the marathon.

Sophomore Vincent Kibunja (Nakuru, Kenya) took home all-conference honors in the 1,000-meter run with a secondplace finish and Gerber was fourth in the 35-pound weight throw. Gerber and Graber Miller were both conference champions in the outdoor meet.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD (INDOORS: 10TH IN CL; OUTDOORS, 10TH IN CL) Junior race walker Siana Emery (North Yarmouth, Maine) continued a Maple Leaf dynasty by taking home her second and third All-American honors in the race walk while sophomore Suzette Rodriguez (Goshen) qualified for nationals in the weight throw. Emery finished eighth in the 5,000-meter (3.11-mile) race, clocking a time of 28:14.88. First-year Hayley Bickford (Gorham, Maine) joined Emery in qualifying for the indoor race walk, a 3,000-meter (1.86-mile) event that saw Emery finish fourth and Bickford 11th.

Rodriguez finished third in the hammer at the outdoor conference meet, uncorking a 157-foot, 10-inch throw, and set a school record with a meet-winning 53’-5½” in the weight throw. Sophomore Taylor Roasa (Oak Park, Michigan) also set a pair of indoor program records, posting times of 8.23 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 27.23 seconds in the 200.

WOMEN ATHLETES SERVE, LEARN AND COMPETE IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC During May term, 18 Goshen College student-athletes from the women’s basketball and softball teams, along with two coaches and two professors, traveled to the Dominican Republic for the second-ever Study and Sports Abroad course. The course was designed by Doug Schirch ’82, professor of chemistry, and Maria Sanchez Schirch ’11, former assistant professor of Spanish, to provide a study-abroad experience for studentathletes, whose schedules often don’t allow for the college’s traditional semester-long Study-Service Term (SST). Throughout the three-week span of the class, students lived with host families in Santo Domingo, taking language courses, experiencing informative lectures and field trips and competing against local teams.

NEWBERG NAMED NEW MEN’S SOCCER COACH Victor Newberg was named the 10th men’s soccer coach in Maple Leaf program history this summer, assuming the position in early June.

Newberg is a graduate of St. Norbert College in Wisconsin, and comes from Trine University in Angola, Indiana, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons. Before Trine, he worked at Ancilla College in Donaldson, Indiana, where he finished 11-3-1 as a head coach after serving as an assistant for the third-place finisher in the NJCAA tournament.

Goshen College has been named one of the best National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) schools in the country for studentathletes, according to Next College Student Athlete (NCSA), the country’s largest college athletic recruiting network. They ranked Goshen College 27th among 140 NAIA college athletic programs.

Unlike traditional power rankings which list schools based purely on athletic performance, this ranking uses criteria that student-athletes find most important when considering potential schools, including athletics, academics and affordability.

Thirteen of Goshen’s athletic teams were named NAIA Scholar-Teams this summer after posting cumulative grade-point averages above 3.00 during the 2018-19 academic year.

The Maple Leaf women’s cross country team led the way with a 3.81 GPA, leading the conference and bringing in the 10th-highest mark of any team in any sport in the nation.

GC’s women’s volleyball team also led the conference, finishing 20th nationally among teams in their sport with a 3.604. Goshen athletes posted an aggregate GPA of 3.20 with 41 academic all-conference performers and 113 entries on the Dean’s List.

Minh (Nguyen) Kauffman ’74 Minh (Nguyen) Kauffman ’74 has dedicated her professional life to social change and community building across countries, cultures and language barriers, through organizations like Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and the Center for Educational Exchange with Vietnam (CEEVN), an affiliate of the American Council of Learned Societies.

Kauffman grew up in Saigon, Vietnam, and came to Goshen College in 1969 where she met students from across the globe, as well as her future husband, Fred Kauffman ’73.

Immediately following graduation, Kauffman taught second grade at Middlebury Elementary School for two years. In 1976, she and Fred began a 13-year series of service assignments in Guatemala, India, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam through MCC. Through short-term consulting in Vietnam, Kauffman discovered ways to support the Vietnamese when they were still feeling the effects of the Vietnam War.

“I got to practice, discover, learn and relearn how to live and work with people,” Kauffman said. “True partnership enables local people to own and drive their own development. I truly understood what ‘Culture for Service’ meant.”

In 1989, Kauffman created the Education Exchange Center, a project of MCC’s Vietnam program. The organization set about to aid Vietnamese agricultural universities in connecting with Southeast Asian countries to participate in professional exchanges. They also facilitated the work of American NGOs and academic institutions, introducing the idea of exchange programs with Vietnam.

Renamed the Center for Educational Exchange with Vietnam (CEEVN) in 1994, the organization has given hundreds of mid-career Vietnamese the path to international education and opportunity, with Kauffman at the helm. It has produced leaders in many fields, including top ministry levels of government. She also advised the Ford Foundation in its programs in the country.

Kauffman plans to retire in 2020, but the legacy of CEEVN will continue in the hands of a local Vietnamese NGO made up of alumni of the exchange program.

“Minh was the right person in the right place at the right time,” said Stan Reedy ’62, then co-representative for MCC in Vietnam. “She was able to imagine a way to connect assets with needs, bringing her own training and experience together to connect individuals and institutions in countries far apart.”

Among 10 national awards that Minh received in Vietnam is the Presidential Medal of Friendship in 2005, the country’s highest medal awarded to foreigners.

Kauffman lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her husband Fred, and they have two adult children, Tony and Timothy. She is actively involved in Philadelphia’s Vietnamese Mennonite Church.

CULTURE FOR SERVICE AWARD

Carolyn (Yoder) Sauder Carolyn (Yoder) Sauder ’55 personifies generosity and service, giving freely of her time, resources and talents to improve the world and everyone around her.

Formerly the executive director at Sauder Village in Archbold, Ohio, she continues in her 45th year there as a volunteer.

Sauder grew up in West Liberty, Ohio, and graduated from Goshen College with a degree in education.

Sauder met her husband, Maynard, at Little Eden Mennonite Camp. As a newly married couple, they were charter members of Zion Mennonite Church in Archbold, Ohio, and each had a role to play in the family businesses.

Her father-in-law, Erie Sauder, founded Sauder Woodworking, the fifth largest residential furniture manufacturer in the nation, and Sauder Village, Ohio’s largest living-history museum and Erie’s focus after his retirement.

Helping to implement Erie’s vision in 1976 to keep the ancestral history of Ohio alive, she helped grow Sauder

Village by developing relationships with staff, educators and museum and history professionals. Sauder Village opened for its first summer with 42 employees, and has grown to more than 400 employees and 400 volunteers.

“You can’t be the best at everything, so you choose people who are experts and follow their lead and learn from it,” Sauder said. “It’s wonderful to see people succeed.”

She retired in 2000, and her daughter, Debbie Sauder David, followed in her footsteps, taking over as executive director.

“She has led with passion and enthusiasm, encouraging others to succeed,” Debbie said of her mother. “Her support behind the scenes with my dad and grandpa facilitated their successful business leadership.”

Carolyn is quick to mention Maynard when speaking about her accomplishments. “We worked on things together. He was a fantastic leader and we made a good team,” she said. “It’s been a real gift.”

In addition to her leadership at the village, Sauder’s passion for music and the arts led her to help get the ball rolling and serve on the Goshen College Music Center fund drive and planning committee. It is now the home of the Sauder Concert Hall.

Sauder also was on the senior advisory council for the campaign to build a new library at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart. She established the Sauder Stewardship Foundation to perpetuate the spirit of generosity and make a meaningful, positive impact on the community, nation and world.

She also supports Mennonite Central Committee, Mennonite Economic Development Associates and other organizations that promote peace and justice in the world.

Carolyn and Maynard still live in Archbold, Ohio, and have enjoyed traveling and learning about other cultures, and are active members at Zion Mennonite Church.

Rob Vander Giessen-Reitsma ’05 A graduate of Goshen College’s peace, justice and conflict studies program, Rob Vander Geissen-Reitsma ’05 has dedicated his life to aiding others and advocating for peace.

Since the early 2000’s, Vander GiessenReitsma and his wife Kirstin have been leading a community development movement based in Three Rivers, Michigan. Vander Giessen-Reitsma works as the executive director of *culture is not optional (*cino), a nonprofit organization that is rooted in Christ and whose mission it is to model and encourage creative communities.

Currently, *cino’s main focus is The Huss Project, an initiative that began in 2009 to transform an abandoned elementary school in a lower-income neighborhood into a lively community

space. At the end of last year, Vander Giessen-Reitsma’s leadership was crucial in a successful financial campaign to win a $50,000 grant to create a renovated, indoor community space at the Huss School called the Imaginarium, which will allow for year-round programming.

“Over the years, I think we as people and as an organization have grown in understanding that the only way to live alongside and serve your neighbors is to do that in the place where you are,” Vander Giessen-Reitsma said.

The Huss Project promotes community development and has hosted such programs as art installations, festivals and service-learning groups. Over the summer, The Huss Project partners with local schools to provide lunches for children during the week. They also

have an urban farm on site, and 80 percent of the produce is distributed to people in the area without access to fresh vegetables.

The Vander Giessen-Reitsmas also helped start and continue to help run World Fare, a volunteer-run fair trade store in downtown Three Rivers that they opened the same year he came to Goshen College.

“I’m pretty convinced that if we were to try this radical love ethic we might find flourishing for all people, particularly the oppressed, but also freedom for the oppressor in that as well,” said Vander Giessen-Reitsma. “That’s a pretty radical idea and hard to live out in everyday life but it underlies most of what we’re attempting to do.”

DR. RUTH GUNDEN CHAMPION OF CHARACTER AWARD

Kari Heusinkveld ’12 Kari Heusinkveld ’12 has brought the knack for leadership and passion for basketball that she demonstrated at Goshen College to Hillcrest Academy (formerly Iowa Mennonite School) in Kalona, Iowa, where she has served as the head girl’s basketball coach since the 2015 season.

After transferring to Goshen from Hesston College, the point guard wasted no time making her mark on the Maple Leaf basketball program. Heusinkveld started 14 times and appeared in 28 games during her first season at GC in 2010-11, averaging 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. In her senior season, Heusinkveld served as team captain, the first under current head coach Stephanie Miller, and was also named team MVP. She started in 29 games, averaging 7.6 points and 4.3 rebounds each game.

“Deep down I think I always knew I would end up coaching at some point,” Heusinkveld said. “Even at a young age, many of my coaches made comments about me getting into it, so when my playing days were over it just made sense.”

In March 2019, Heusinkveld was a recipient of the E. Wayne Cooley “You Can” Award by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association for her work in rebuilding the girls basketball program at Hillcrest Academy. This award is meant to recognize coaches who are early in their coaching career and are building up a varsity program. Heusinkveld was one of just three coaches in Iowa given the award for girls basketball.

In her first two seasons at Hillcrest Academy, Heusinkveld’s team went 1-37.

Then, in the 2017-2018 season, they

finished with five wins. In the 20182019 season, the team went 10-11.

“I feel like GC taught me perseverance in the face of challenges and that’s something I will forever be grateful for,” she said. “Whether it was in the classroom or on the court, I was constantly pushed and encouraged to give more, do more, be more. Balancing the demands of athletics with being a science major was tough, but it helped prepare me for balancing multiple avenues in my professional career.”

Heusinkveld’s coaching philosophy is one of encouragement. “My goal is to provide a positive athletic experience for each of my athletes and I believe that that first starts with creating a safe, controlled environment that is conducive to learning,” she said.

Garrett Cannizzo ’12 Garrett Cannizzo ’12 was a top athlete and a strong scholar during his four years at Goshen College, which has helped lead him to early success in his professional life, including being named to the South Bend Tribune’s 2018 “Michiana Forty Under 40” list.

The recipient of the 2017 Indiana CPA society’s Emerging Leader Award, Cannizzo currently works in Elkhart, Indiana, as an audit senior manager at RSM US LLP, which is the fifth largest public accounting firm in the country. In this role, he specializes in working directly with companies in the manufacturing industry, and his clients are spread across the country.

Originally from Arlington Heights, Illinois, Cannizzo came to Goshen College to continue his baseball career

and pursue a degree in accounting, while also minoring in business and entrepreneurship.

Cannizzo was a vital member of the Maple Leaf baseball team during his time at Goshen. In his senior year, he maintained a career high 0.321 batting average, and was consistently one of the teams top hitters, serving as designated hitter his junior and senior seasons. He also was a top outfielder, posting an impressive 0.957 fielding average for his collegiate career.

Off the baseball diamond, he was involved on campus, serving in positions such as business manager of The Record and resident assistant.

Since graduating, Cannizzo has been deeply involved in his local

community with a number of non-profit organizations, both in volunteer and board positions, which he notes has helped him create business connections and accelerate his career trajectory. He attributes this to his time at GC. “Being from a big city, I never really understood the concept of ’community,’” said Cannizzo. “After I graduated and moved to Northern Indiana, I truly started to understand and embrace what a ’community’ really is and what it means to those who are involved.

Without the GC community, I don’t think I would have ever learned what that means.”

Cannizzo and his wife Elise live in Granger, Indiana, and attend Gospel City Church, also located in Granger.

1894-1919 Coming to Goshen Goshen College’s June 1903 groundbreaking ceremony rooted the institution in a specific tract of farmland (a stubbly wheat field cleared just in time for the ceremony), but also in the broader civic landscape of Goshen, Indiana, whose enterprising business leaders raised prodigious funds to win the Mennonite Church-directed college for their city. Businessman Wilbur L. Stonex had argued that a college would deliver more benefits and cultural riches to the community than a factory. Now the higher educational beacon of its proud sponsoring community, Goshen

College in its early decades would enjoy easy and regular interactions with Goshen town citizens and institutions, including in shared worship spaces and with local non-Mennonite young people who soon enrolled as students.

chartered trolley cars back to Elkhart to mark a final graduation in that city.

Elkhart Institute had begun modestly in rented quarters in August 1894.

Soon supporting stockholders funded construction of what had seemed a substantial building. But on that June evening, the still-new building was already too small to handle the commencement crowd. The Institute’s Class of 1903 would enshrine its class motto, Vorwärts und aufwärts (Onward and upward), in the façade of the soon-to-rise Administration Building.

A reminder of the past, this stone continues to point us to the future.

1920-1944 Old Goshen, New Goshen An August 1914 performance by Goshen College students, faculty and local citizens on the campus lawn of Handel’s oratorio “Saul” provides a window on the college’s first two decades in Goshen, an era that, after college-church tensions resulted in the closing of the college for one year in 1923-24, came to be called “Old Goshen” (p. 22). Viewed as Edenic by some and dangerously liberal by others, Old Goshen was the laboratory in which the present Goshen College first sparked to life.

The choice of a sacred oratorio on a biblical theme was consistent with Goshen College’s religious priorities.

At the same time, the production — replete with costumes — was

characteristic of Old Goshen’s high cultural ambitions. Music performance, oratory and athletics activities rounded out a Goshen education, pushing the boundaries of traditional Mennonite prohibitions. Critics feared Goshen was grooming students to forsake traditional nonconformity and join mainstream American liberality. External criticism exacerbated the precarious financial footing of the fledgling institution, resulting in the board’s decision to close the college at the end of the 1922-23 academic year.

In the year following, committed leaders labored so that a “New Goshen” could open in the fall of 1924. New President S.C. Yoder and Dean Noah Oyer applied conciliatory skills and wisdom to reopen a more viable endeavor. Some of the ablest products of the oft-maligned Old Goshen education formed the core of a vigorous new faculty. Conflicts and griefs inherent in the original venture — promoting education in a Mennonite context — did not disappear completely.

In 1830, two 100-year-old white oak trees stood close to the intersection of what is now the corner of Main Street and College Avenue.

These trees had witnessed many changes through their life span. This land had been the home of the Miami People for over 700 years. They were displaced to the west during the mid-17th century because of the Beaver Wars initiated by European nations. The Miami established their homes further to the southeast of Goshen when they returned in the mid18th century. This disruptive period of history brought the Potawatomi People into the Elkhart Prairie from the north, just as the two oak trees were young saplings. This land was a favored location where Miami and Potawatomi raised corn, beans and squash, gathered nondomesticated plants, fished and hunted.

The first settlers arriving on the Elkhart Prairie noted the wigwams of many Potawatomi family units.

Then, this land we now call Goshen College, was taken by treaty from the Potawatomi by the U.S. government in September 1828. It is clear that the land was prime farm land, as only settlers could own parcels on the Elkhart Prairie.

The treaty states: “There shall be granted to the following persons, all of whom are Indians by descent, the tracts of land…provided that no location shall be made upon the Elkhart Prairie, nor within five miles of the same.”

The treaty to cede their land was signed by key chiefs; Topenebee, Pokagon and Shipshewanon, along with 66 other Potawatomi representatives and two commissioners of the U.S. government.

The two oaks were listed in the first surveyor’s 1830 field notes as “witness trees” to the post he set to create the northwest corner of Section 22 of Elkhart Township of Elkhart County. As he looked to the west, he described the land as rolling down to the Elkhart River. He then walked east, recording in his field notes that the land was an oak savannah that soon opened into prairie (just past the current Music Center). At the half mile point (approximately the intersection of College Avenue and 15th Street) the surveyor noted a road heading to Fort Wayne. This was the primary trail/road that the Miami and Potawatomi had traveled for centuries between what are now the cities of Elkhart and Fort Wayne. It is also the road that many early settlers used as they came from the east.

Much of the land where Goshen College is situated was first purchased in 1831 by a settler Daniel Cripe, Sr., the first Dunkard minister in the area, and the deed was signed by President Andrew Jackson.

Daniel and his wife Magdalena sold the land to their son Emanuel in 1830, who then sold it to Noah Shoup in 1895.

Goshen College purchased land from the Shoup family in 1903, as the Elkhart Institute relocated to Goshen. The original location of the Elkhart Institute has a very similar land story, just with different settler names.

As we celebrate 125 years, Goshen College acknowledges that its land was taken from the Potawatomi and seeks to establish healthy relationships with Potawatomi in the region. We believe “The Earth is the Lord’s” (Psalm 24:1) –– and are committed to humbly pursuing health with all of Creation and being in right relationship with all people.

Still, the renewed effort found more secure footing that allowed Goshen College to rise again, survive the Depression and achieve full accreditation before its second quarter century would end.

1945-1969 Engaging the World The tumult of World War II opened Goshen College to new encounters with the world. Growing numbers of students and faculty could rely on globes to track future or past periods of service or education. Some of Elkhart Institute’s earliest students had heeded the exotic call to India. The aftermath of World War I had sent students to strife-torn areas in Europe, the Near East and Russia. In the 1940s, many GC students still hailed from rural communities.

Alternative military service requirements for “work of national importance” exposed many in GC’s applicant pools to smokejumping, reforestation projects and work in state mental hospitals.

Participation away from home in such work also increased greatly the number of young Mennonites interested in pursuing higher education. At Goshen, faculty mentors and student peers were actively engaged in post-war relief in 22

Europe and Asia. Soon they ventured on to teaching and development work in Africa, and beyond. A steady influx of international students enhanced the on-campus impact of experiences North Americans brought home from abroad.

When GC sought reaccreditation in 1965, external observers noted that over half of the teaching faculty had some sort of international experience. In looking

to its future, the college decided to build on this evolving strength, launching the Study-Service Trimester (SST) in 1968.

1970-1994 Potters and Poets “Goshen begins with the assumption that what is odd, exceptional and different may nevertheless be worthwhile, if not revelatory.” One could apply departing President J. Lawrence Burkholder’s ’39 1984 characterization of campus culture to most of GC history.

It seems particularly apt in describing the way GC’s academic boundaries expanded during our fourth quarter century. The early 1970s at Goshen College unleashed a flourishing of the imaginative and unconventional — mirroring American trends, but distinctly rooted in campus culture. The teachers, nurses, doctors we continued to prepare carried SST-shaped life experiences with them. But they also studied in an on-campus environment sprinkled with the “odd, exceptional and different.”

The poet Nicholas Lindsay joined the English Department faculty in 1969 with a voice of thunder and a kinetic teaching style unfamiliar in Goshen’s

classrooms. Lindsay tapped into the elemental, the archetypal, the Divine.

Imbued with intriguing outsider credentials, he became an influential apostle of Goshen creative writing, founding Pinchpenny Press (which still continues strong) and inspiring students to become poets.

Lindsay was not alone in thinking outside the pedagogical box. For decades, professor of music Mary Oyer ’45 had taught a peerless course in the classical fine arts. A sabbatical in Kenya broadened Oyer’s gaze, and that of her students, to encompass thumb pianos, drums, indeed myriad artistic and musical forms of world cultures.

Just as Lindsay led students toward the non-conformist profession of poetry, professor of art Marvin Bartel ignited a student passion for making pottery, resulting in an uncommon number of life vocations in ceramics. Perhaps the most novel curricular experiment of the period was a course called “Creative Expression” — inventive in concept but a difficult sell to students — who loved freedom of choice but objected to mandated creativity.

Nick Lindsay served as GC assistant professor of English 1969-76. After returning to his home on Edisto Island, South Carolina, Lindsay regularly led annual, weeklong poetry workshops in Goshen until 2000. The son of Vachel Lindsay, Lindsay’s eclectic resumé included studies in Russian and French literature, carpenter, boatbuilder, collector of African-American lore.

1995-2019 Doors of Welcome What differences exist between GC at age 100 and 125? A 1994 alumnus might notice many. Only 10 percent of 1994 faculty still teach here. In 1994, GC had not yet had a female president, nor offered a master’s degree. The Music Center, the Connector, Romero Student Apartments? — not yet built. Today, with the addition of an underpass, trains no longer provide an excuse for being late to class.

Campus sidewalks of 1994 carried more people, but the variety of people traversing today’s sidewalks has increased significantly. What has moved us from a campus with a white student population of around 85 percent in 1994 to today’s 56 percent? Especially 24

notable is the rise in Hispanic student population to over 25 percent. In the late 1960s, GC began repeated, though not always successful, efforts to increase racial diversity. In 2001, Lilly Endowment invited GC to consider how it might use a “transformational” gift. Early ideas imagined “bridges” to the rapidly-growing local Hispanic population. In 2006, Lilly supported creation of the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning. Running through 2012, that grant sought to make GC education accessible to Latino and other diverse groups, increase all GC students’ intercultural learning and study Northern Indiana’s changing demographics and their implications for higher education.

Through changes in core curriculum, support for students and families, decisions about resources and

organizational change, GC seeks to move “beyond hospitality” — and is enriched by the changing faces on its sidewalks.

Touchstones of 125 years — engaging Indiana and the world, fusing faith and the liberal arts, finding revelation in the unconventional — are echoed, and enlarged, in the words of our recentlyrevised vision statement: to prepare “students to thrive in life, leadership and service. Rooted in the way of Jesus, we will seek inclusive community and transformative justice in all that we do.”

Susan Fisher Miller ’79 was the author of the college’s centennial history book, Culture for Service, and is a member of the GC Board of Directors. Joe Springer ’80 is curator of the Mennonite Historical Library on campus.

Both were born into Goshen College faculty families at the midpoint of the college’s 125-year history, and have been involved observers of GC throughout their lives.

A Beautiful Bequest

How the Hunsberger’s Haitian art collection found a new home in the historic Union Building

W

hen Goshen College Director Emeritus of International Education Arlin and Naomi Hunsberger ’55 arrived in Haiti in 1962 to serve in a rural hospital with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), they didn’t intend to become collectors of local art.

But early in their Haitian experience, the young couple was tasked to purchase a gift for a departing volunteer, and found themselves in the busy Iron Market in downtown Port-au-Prince buying a painting.

them the moment they stepped into the building.

“People asked us what we were interested in buying,” Naomi recalled. “We told them we wanted a painting, and immediately many, many paintings appeared in many, many hands... I suppose you could say that was our first foray into buying Haitian art.”

The longer they lived in Haiti, they more they found themselves spending their free time visiting the local art galleries, becoming familiar with local artists.

After befriending a Port-au-Prince gallery owner named Issa al Saieh, their interest blossomed into a passion, feeding a desire to learn more about the rich visual tapestry offered by this country that they had come to love. The whole Hunsberger family would spend pleasant afternoons at the gallery as a form of entertainment before the evening curfew, listening to stories and watching artists at work.

Under Issa’s guidance, their understanding and appreciation for Haiti’s diverse artistic styles grew, along with their collection. Over the course of 18 years in Haiti, including multiple MCC assignments and five stints as Study-Service Term (SST) leaders, they amassed a collection with more than 90 pieces of art, thought to be one of the largest in the country.

In 2014, the Hunsbergers pledged to donate their entire collection to Goshen College. In 2018, members of the Hunsberger family gave a generous lead gift to renovate the historic Union Building including a new commons space, serving as a catalyst to create a permanent and public home for their Haitian art collection and coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the SST program.

Connecting virtually WE ARE ALWAYS looking for opportunities for our current students and alumni to network in ways that will be helpful and fruitful for everyone involved. This past year, Jair Hernandez ’13, a member of the Alumni Council, connected with David Kendall, GC’s career networks coordinator. They decided to propose a partnership between the Alumni Council and David’s office to directly connect GC students with alumni in various fields. As David notes about his and Jair’s relationship, “I really want students to understand that connections with people can make things happen.” They believe these meetups can serve a catalyst for more relationship building.

Goshen College recently developed a designated Career Networks room, The Link, on the first floor of Wyse Hall.

It is a space for group meetings and consultations, and includes technology for video-conferencing from anywhere in the world. Jair and David decided to use this room and technology to have what they are calling Alumni Virtual Meetups. As Jair notes, “David was looking for a way to help students navigate life after college when they become alumni.

I wanted to think of new ways to get the Alumni Council to make a larger impact for students and Goshen College.”

The decision was made at our spring Alumni Council meetings that the council would support this effort and that council members would be the first to volunteer to share their vocational paths. Ruth Ann Stauffer ’71 joined the trusts and estates group of Anderson Kill PC in the New York office. Gerald R. “Tony” Hurst ’65 Adjunct Professor of Education 1943 – 2019 Gerald R. “Tony” Hurst ’65 died on Feb. 14, 2019, in Goshen, at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer. In his retirement, he had been an adjunct professor of elementary science methods at Goshen College, in addition to having taught middle school science for 30-plus years in Middlebury Community Schools.

J. Mark Ramseyer ’76, Cambridge, Mass., Mitsubishi Professor of Japanese Legal Studies at Harvard Law School (HLS), was conferred with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays, by the Japanese government.

One of the oldest and highest national decorations, the award recognizes his extensive contributions to the development of Japanese studies in the United States and the promotion of understanding of Japanese society and culture. A leading scholar in his field, he focuses his research on Japanese law and he teaches a variety of courses on Japanese law at HLS. John E. Sharp ’77, Hesston, Kan., historian and peacebuilding advocate, was one of three featured speakers at Eastern Mennonite University’s Ten Talks event during the October 2019 Homecoming and Family Weekend, which honored and celebrated the 25th anniversary of EMU’s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding. The theme was “celebrate, reflect, dream.”

Joanne Widrick Tanner ’79, a family nurse practitioner in Cortland, N.Y., recently started Caring Hearts for Central Haiti, Inc., a nonprofit organization, which raises funds to better the community of Carissade, Haiti, and the surrounding plateau. She gets to Haiti about quarterly and writes, “The impact of my SST experience in Haiti has stayed with me all of my life.” Funds are currently being raised for the drilling of clean water wells. 5

There were 62 competitors in his age group. 15 Timothy Stoltzfus-Dueck ’99, a theoretical physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), has won a DOE Early Career Research Award for exceptional scientists in the early stages of their careers. He will use the five-year, approximately $500,000 per year award to develop and test models essential to the confinement of plasma, the hot, charged gas that must be tightly confined in doughnut-shaped devices to produce fusion reactions. Scientists around the world are seeking to replicate and control on Earth the fusion that powers the sun and stars to produce safe, clean and virtually inexhaustible energy for generating electricity. 16

The Elkhart Institute: ‘A laudable enterprise’

AT 9 A.M. on August 21, 1894, Henry

A. Mumaw — entrepreneur, editor, homeopathic physician — opened the doors to the Elkhart Institute. A month earlier, the Elkhart Truth had heralded plans for the Institute as a “laudable enterprise; … distinctively Elkhartan — an institution by our people and for our people.” Nonetheless, according to the newspaper, the Institute would “extend a cordial invitation to the young people of adjoining towns, counties and states … to all who may wish to receive a practical education.”

Although the idea of a “Mennonite college” was being bandied about, the August launch was still a private venture. Mumaw had committed $300

personally, joined by one other Elkhart donor ($25) and 4 Ontario-based donors ($5/each). Temporary quarters were in the hall of the Grand Army of the Republic (on northwest corner of Main Street and Franklin Street in Downtown Elkhart). Mumaw’s 14-year-old son Andrew was reportedly the first of 30 students enrolled that August — a number that had doubled by the end of the first 10-week term. A faculty initially consisting of four men and one woman covered a spectrum of courses from business to music, physical culture to oratory.

Six months later, stockholders of the newly-formed Elkhart Institute Association took on ownership and

further development of the Institute.

Before the decade was out, the Institute had built and outgrown a building in Elkhart and moved to Goshen to become Goshen College.

Past, present, future It wasn’t so long ago that Jason Samuel ’92 (left, in a 1992 yearbook photo) and Duane Stoltzfus ’81 (right, and in the bottom left of this 1978 yearbook photo of The Record staff) were Goshen College students. Now, as professors in the Communication Department and, respectively, general manager for The Globe, 91.1FM WGCS and advisor for The Record, they truly know what it will mean for their students when all of the department’s co-curriculars are in one home together in the renovated west wing of Newcomer Center in Fall 2020, a project just recently announced. After years of being spread out across campus, it is time for the facilities to match the caliber of their award-winning programs.
