Dear Goshen College community and friends, As we embark on our 125th year of providing transformational higher education in Elkhart County, I’m glad to reflect on the past academic year and consider the many ways that your generosity has continued to shape this learning community in creating courageous, creative and compassionate leaders. Here are a few highlights I want to share with you from the 2018-19 academic year on campus: • We celebrated the 50th anniversary of our nationally-recognized Study-Service Term. Fifty years since those first groups left campus for their grand adventure, nearly 8,000 students have visited 25 countries. We celebrated the program’s landmark anniversary with a two-day conference, art exhibits, stories, photos and developing plans for the program’s future.

• We received the gift of a Gamelan — a set of traditional, percussion instruments from the Indonesian island of Java — from the late Duane Gingerich ’69 and his wife Reti, in honor of his former professor, Mary Oyer ’45.

• Through the President’s Innovation Fund, we’ve given $335,000 to more than 20 faculty members to pursue projects in many different fields.

• We saw a 26-year high in giving toward our GC Fund, providing resources that directly impact the student experience at Goshen College.

• The number of traditional undergraduate students attending Goshen College rose for the third straight year, with overall enrollment remaining steady for the 2018-19 school year.

• We recognized four of our outstanding alumni with alumni awards during Homecoming Weekend: David Reimer ’84, Patricia Ebersole Zwier ’76, Jes Stoltzfus Buller ’08, Penina (Acayo) Laker ’11 and Byron Shenk ’63.

• We graduated our youngest ever student. At 17, Mikol Aspinwall ’19 earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and is now working in the tech industry.

• We were named Indiana’s “Radio School of the Year” and the Record won “Indiana Collegiate Newspaper of the Year,” in addition to dozens of other student and program awards, too numerous to list here.

• We celebrated the 60th anniversary of 91.1 FM The Globe (WGCS), which has truly been a cultural beacon in this community.

Amidst our celebrations, our community has also faced significant grief, with the losses of beloved professors, coworkers and friends. These include: • Deb Detwiler ’79, (April 20, 1957 – April 22, 2019), professor of music • Carolyn Schrock-Shenk (July 22, 1955 – Feb. 6, 2019), associate professor of peace, justice and conflict studies • Philip Thomas ’87 (May 1, 1965 – Nov. 29, 2018), adjunct professor of peace, justice and conflict studies • Tony Hurst ’65 (Sept. 14, 1943 – Feb 14, 2019), adjunct professor of sociology • Gerhard Reimer (June 16, 1928 – Jan. 1, 2019), professor emeritus of German • Katherine Yutzy (Aug. 4, 1927 – Dec. 23, 2018), professor emeritus of nursing I want you to know that all gifts — large and small — make a difference, whether to a specific project, to our annual operating or to fund needed scholarships in perpetuity. On behalf of all of us at Goshen College, I humbly thank each of you for your generous giving and vital contributions. With them, we have planted seeds of life, leadership and service. Goshen College Giving Clubs The combined giving power of GC Giving Club members is truly phenomenal, whether they join the Builders at a minimum gift of $1 per day, or the President’s Circle at $25,000 or more. Five giving clubs support the GC Fund, and together, the members of these clubs provided $1,383,046 in “unrestricted” giving for fiscal year 2018-19.
