WELCOME TO THE ATL AIRPORT DISTRICT

The ATL Starts Here

There’s a certain Southside feeling that you get the moment you land here in the District. It’s a flavor, a color, a vibe. In the cities surrounding Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, you’ll find it in the minority-owned restaurants, authentic art scene, historic architecture and lively community events. It’s painted on walls and chalked on sidewalks throughout College Park, Fairburn, Hapeville and Union City. No matter where you’re from or how you get here, you’re invited to soak it in.

All the fun, none of the hassle

Despite its relaxed attitude, the ATL Airport District is raising the bar on Atlanta’s celebrated efficiency and convenience. First, the District is even closer to Atlanta’s airport than Atlanta is, with thousands of hotel rooms offering complimentary airport shuttle service, plus a free 24/7 ATL SkyTrain from the airport to Gateway Center Campus and rental cars. Everything you need is accessible either on foot, by MARTA, or with an easy drive: restaurants, shopping, art, music, theater, attractions, activities and sports. Being located at the convergence of several interstate highways has its advantages, too, like access to Atlanta neighborhoods including Downtown, Midtown, Decatur, Buckhead, Perimeter and beyond.

Lots to do in the District

Walk mural-lined main streets, take in history old and new, and catch a show or sporting event all within the District. Don’t miss the one-of-akind attractions, beautiful parks, playgrounds, skateparks, historic golf course, and invigorating yoga and wellness studios. And thanks to temperate year-round weather, the District is always alive with festivals and events. Check the calendar at ATLdistrict.com for Spin the District cycling races/block parties, classic car shows, family festivals, music events, holiday celebrations and more—almost all free to attend.

CITIES OF THE DISTRICT: COLLEGE PARK

A deep-rooted, genuine and inclusive community, College Park is Atlanta’s gateway to the world. The city offers the best of Southern hospitality with more than 5,000 hotel rooms and an ample supply of eateries, from homegrown to high class, including cuisine from the American South, Jamaica, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, West Africa, New Orleans and beyond.

The home of Southside sports

Three celebrated teams call College Park’s Gateway Center Arena home: the Atlanta Dream (WNBA basketball), the College Park Skyhawks (NBA G-League) and LOVB Atlanta (women’s professional volleyball). Pro Tip: Fans traveling by MARTA can get off at Airport Station and take the free ATL SkyTrain across to the Arena, day or night.

Clayton County contains over 896 acres of parkland, 32 parks, a nature preserve & numerous facilities offering a variety of recreational opportunities.

Clayton County is a major player in many industries: film, food/beverage processing & manufacturing, health services, logistics & distribution and aviation & aerospace manufacturing. With air service, rail service, port accessibility & access along major interstates, Clayton County is the “Logical Choice for Logistics.”

Formed in 2014, the Aerotropolis Alliance has been the driving force behind the revitalization of the area around the airport. Their mission is to improve and sustain the quality of life for those who live, work, and play in Clayton County-Where the World Lands and Opportunities Take Off.

SPIVEY SPLASH WATER PARK

The Timeless Treasure of Fairburn, Georgia

“A city that embraces the future while remembering the past.” These are the words that the City of Fairburn lives by, quietly nestled a few short miles southwest of Atlanta proper. For metro-area visitors in search of the real Georgia, Fairburn distills its considerable charm into a compact sevensquare-mile footprint, where it successfully melds a peaceful country lifestyle with big-city amenities. Anchored by unique dining experiences and one-of-a-kind events and attractions, this charming exurb honors its rich and complex history while progressing into a new era. Here, good old-fashioned fun and leisure—powered by 21st-century industry and transport—make for a fresh take on Southern hospitality.

A step into the past with GA RenFest

Among locals and insiders, Fairburn is best known as the home of the Georgia Renaissance Festival (affectionally known as Ren Fest, or occasionally GARF), where attendees travel to another world in another time—while staying within eight miles of the airport. Popular throughout the Southeast since its 1986 debut, our Ren Fest is a family-friendly outdoor experience taking place each spring and fall, rain or shine, with costumes encouraged.

Visitors are immersed in a festive atmosphere that vibrates with throwback energy from costumed performers & wandering bards at every turn. Throughout the realm, several stages come alive with stunts, jugglers, animal shows, musicians, magicians, and jesters—plus cosplay contests and performances to coincide with themed weekends.

A variety of carnival rides and games are available for kids and adults with seasonal features such as a petting zoo & pony or camel rides. The festival’s food courts, coffee shop, tearoom, pubs and taverns keep the energy buzzing throughout the day with fun fare at a variety of price points.

Visitors can take home a piece of the fun by shopping the festival’s souvenir stands & impressive Artisans Market where dozens upon dozens of local makers display their wares. And there’s always a place for gamers at Ren Fest, with game-themed festival days and a Dad’s Garage improv Dungeons & Dragons show in residence. garenfest.com

Embracing history in Downtown Fairburn

For history buffs & fans of Southern culture, Fairburn’s true treasures await those who seek

Renaissance Festival in Fairburn

out the historic authenticity of its Main Street district. Here, visitors can stroll the tree-lined strip that blends old architecture with new, where quaint community storefronts range from antiques to boutiques and beyond. Catch a show at the Southside Theatre Guild community theater, which has been staging performances since the early 1970s—or even join an audition or workshop! stgplays.com

Some of the area’s most beloved restaurants are also found here, including the legendary Lady Fannie Mae’s Ultimate Fish Fry and local favorite Oz Pizza, a Southside standby that has operated its Fairburn location for over 20 years. That Burger Spot, a creative local sandwich chain, opened its newest location here just this past September. Across the street, the city has converted its two 1917 train depots into family restaurant spaces, a sign of exciting things to come.

At the heart of Downtown Fairburn is its amphitheater. Regular community events take place in its idyllic courtyard including the annual Fall Festival & Parade, as well as the popular Fairburn Farmers Market, Art in the Alley, and the Third Friday Concert Series, among others. Visitors are invited to experience the unparalleled delight of whiling away a Georgia afternoon or evening in the cradle of Southern hospitality, away from the bright lights of the big city (yet conveniently highway-adjacent).

The open road to tomorrow

Those keen to explore—particularly with an interest in Fairburn’s many connections to the outside world by car, truck & freight—will find there’s even more to this hidden gem. Youth and sports groups of all sizes are thrilled to find familiar fast food brands plus a Cracker Barrel along Highway 74, not to mention fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine from Los Mariachis and hearty Southern brunch classics at Kiss My Gritz Breakfast House. This up-and-coming corridor, convenient to the industrial part of town, also boasts name-brand hotels & short-term rentals galore.

Beyond its tourism value, Fairburn offers incredible benefits for enterprise and industry, with a business-friendly government & exceptional

logistics. That’s why several top industries and Fortune 500 companies (including Clorox, Duracell, and DHL) call Fairburn home. The location offers competitive advantages in shipping, transportation and logistics, thanks in large part to both Atlanta’s nearby airport and the CSX Domestic intermodal, which provides a key connection to the ports of Savannah and Brunswick.

Of course, Fairburn is too pretty to be just a haven for industry. With 28 miles of streams and waterways & 368 acres of green space, the city gives “outdoorsy” with natural views and recreation nearly everywhere you look. Picturesque educational campuses add to the city’s beauty, including Brenau University, Georgia Military College, Landmark Christian School, and the Global Impact Academy—all working together to make Fairburn an ideal place for young families to settle as well as an excellent source of new talent for rising businesses. Fairburn is currently undergoing a major push for improvement, with significant investment in pedestrian-oriented initiatives in progress, including a $200,000 LCI Streetscape project. Additionally, area-wide access & mobility improvements will soon augment Fairburn’s existing freight access, thanks to a cooperative investment from the South Fulton Community

Oz Pizza has been a Fairburn mainstay for 20+ years.

Improvement District (CID), government officials, business professionals and members of the surrounding community.

The next chapter: A warm welcome to the ATL Airport District

In addition to these structural improvements, the Fairburn government has recently made the forward-thinking decision to partner with the ATL Airport District, the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) that represents the area surrounding Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The District, which also comprises the cities of College Park, Hapeville and Union City,

has been a source of bright & engaging energy on the Southside since its inception in 2015, supporting and promoting local events, retail/ restaurant partners, hotels, venues, and brands to travelers across the country.

The CVB will now add Fairburn’s impressive inventory of hotels & points of interest to its comprehensive partner network, giving the city access to a higher level of promotion as part of the most convenient and accessible destination in the Southeast. This move also creates opportunities for Fairburn to take part in the District’s content marketing, industry trade show presence for travel and meetings, traditional advertising, and public relations efforts, while high-quality creative support of Fairburn’s community assets will allow its message and reputation to reach a much wider audience.

The CVB looks forward to helping to raise Fairburn’s profile throughout our metro area and beyond, bringing more tourism, event traffic and overall economic impact to this charming city.

ATL Airport District: A Living, A Living Center of African American History & Opportunity.

Georgia’s story has flipped. Once a place many African Americans sought to escape has now become a destination where African Americans are finding new opportunity, community, and pride to lead. From the early years of segregation and Jim Crow, through the Civil Rights era and into the modern day, African American entrepreneurs in Georgia have carved out spaces of commerce, autonomy, and cultural identity while adapting to changing economic, social, and regulatory landscapes.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Black entrepreneurs in Georgia faced both intense racism and limited access to capital and markets. Yet they built thriving ventures that sustained and empowered their communities. Businesses such as barbershops, beauty salons, funeral homes, grocery stores, and restaurants served as safe gathering places and symbols of progress. The Busy Bee Café in Atlanta, founded in 1947 by Lucy Jackson, became a beloved landmark where leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. once dined. Similarly, the Atlanta Daily World, founded in 1928 by William Alexander Scott II, gave voice to African American perspectives during times of

social struggle and transformation.

By the 1980s and 1990s, Georgia’s Black business landscape expanded rapidly. Civil rights gains, supplier diversity programs, and the emergence of a Black middle class fueled an entrepreneurial renaissance. The Atlanta Business League established in 1933 played a vital role in connecting and advocating for Black entrepreneurs.

Over time, service-oriented businesses flourished, paving the way for business such as communications, film and TV production, business consulting, insurance agents, law firms, repair shops, medical & dental practices, fitness spas & gyms plus talented people serving in many different capacities in local governments and Chambers of Commerce who assist and promote local business owners.

Today, the ATL Airport District (which includes College Park, Hapeville, Union City and Fairburn) stands as a vibrant hub of Black entrepreneurship, history, and cultural celebration. Each February, the region comes alive with Black History Month events that blend education, art, and empowerment, Past events: Hapeville highlighted Black creativ-

ity with live art performances and gallery showcases; Union City uplifted youth and education through essay contests and community discussions honoring civil rights pioneers. Fairburn’s Black History Month events turned celebration into economic empowerment, spotlighting local chefs, vendors, and small businesses. These citysponsored programs are more than annual observances; they are acts of continuation, ensuring the spirit of entrepreneurship and self-determination remain strong.

This year (2026) College Park will again honor Black Excellence, Community Leadership and Cultural Heritage in their Black History Month Program on Saturday, February 28th at the GICC. Fairburn will hold a film night on February 26th from 6-8pm and a celebration of Black History, Arts & Culture on February 27th from 10am-12pm (noon). For more information, contact your local city government offices.

Also in College Park, the nonprofit PHOAA (Preserving the Heritage of the Original African Americans), a 501(c)(3) organization, leads efforts to preserve the city’s original African American neighborhood. Through walking tours and restoration projects like the historic Price Barbershop, PHOAA is transforming local history into a living museum experience. Their vision is clear: to create a museum and interpretive center that celebrates the families, faith, and businesses that built College Park’s foundation. PHOAA’s mission statement: “We are preserving the legacy of the people who helped make College Park thrive.”

Restaurants continue to play a vital role in cultural connection. Aye Tea Elle, Buttermilk Biscuit, Yay Beignet, The Breakfast Boys (owned by Lorenzo Wyche, Gee & Juan Smalls), Buttersweet Bakery, Johnny’s World Famous Chicken and Waffles (owned by Crystal Smith, Ne-Yo & Karlie Redd). UnbelieVegan ATL serves soulful plant-based cuisine in Fairburn. Oz Pizza (owned by Chris Wiley & David Howard) is another popular restaurant actively involved with the community.

In Fairburn, Swing ATL has become a local favorite. The 18-hole outdoor mini-golf & food truck park was founded by a dynamic team: Nekeidra

and Richard Taylor, Jonathan Phillips and Masika George who envisioned a space where fun meets community connection. Their mission is “to create something families of color can enjoy together in a place that reflects us, our creativity, and our joy.” The Peach Cobbler Factory Fairburn and SunMed Your CBD Store are some of many Black-owned franchise locations whose owners are active participants in the community. All of these businesses are not just economic ventures; they are cultural institutions. They employ local residents, mentor youth, and create spaces of belonging.

According to recent reports, Georgia now leads the nation in the percentage of Black-owned businesses, with nearly 35% of enterprises identifying as Black-owned and continuing to grow. Challenges persist especially in access to capital, scaling, and protecting legacy businesses from displacement but Georgia’s environment is increasingly supportive. The Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council and local chambers offer mentorship, networking, and procurement pathways that were once out of reach.

The state’s growing recognition of cultural tourism has also opened doors for heritagebased business development, especially in the ATL Airport District, where history and progress intersect. Black-owned businesses are not just shaping Georgia’s economy; they are shaping its identity. From legacy barbershops to smart-tech markets, from cultural museums to creative food spaces, Georgia’s Black entrepreneurs continue to honor the past while propelling the state into a more inclusive future.
