Check the calendar for a variety of seasonal art and music festivals, theater, car shows and so much more and most likely minutes from your hotel or home.

Take the people mover from the airport to rent a car, or jump on MARTA, accessible from the airport, College Park, or East Point, and be downtown, Decatur, Lenox, Perimeter and more in minutes.

SOUTH FULTON Boat Rock is a small urban boulder field located in the City of South Fulton and managed by the Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC). Boat Rock has a long history of climbing and held one of the first US bouldering competitions in 1985.

Climbing at Boat Rock is exclusively granite bouldering-very technical and takes a great deal of balance and foot work. Check it out at www.seclimbers.org/project/boat-rock/ Other recreational, arts, educational and entertainment venues can all be found in City of South Fulton.

HAPEVILLE Bustling with growth, the City of Hapeville is the epicenter of the resurgence for the Atlanta Airport area. The designated Main Street City is home to the original Chick-fil-A Dwarf House and Wells Fargo Processing Center. Hapeville is a walkable community, a little over two miles in size, that offers a charming historic downtown filled with restaurants, shopping, a train depot museum and a lively downtown park.

UNION CITY On the edge of the ATL Guide area, Union City is the gateway to the South Fulton Scenic Byway and is home to the second largest sound stages in North America. Dreaming of dining your way around the world?

Look no further than the ATL Airport District. From Italian cuisine to Ethiopian delights, the District has a plate for every palate. Read on to learn how these trendsetting restaurants are serving up deliciousness in a safe, socially distant manner!

Volare Bistro Volare Bistro is, perhaps, as well known for its finely crafted seasonal cuisine as it is for its extensive wine list. The menu features Italian dishes plus delicious salads, sandwiches and desserts with a wine list ranges from $8 per glass to up to $300 per bottle. Located close to Hapeville’s City Hall, Volare’s outdoor patio overlooks Hapeville’s Veteran’s Park-reservations are encouraged.

Restaurant 356 at Porsche Restaurant 356 is a “contemporary restaurant” that boasts a “relaxed yet elegant feel.”

Located in the Porsche Experience Center, this restaurant’s menu is composed of simple ingredients and innovative techniques. Refined yet approachable, Restaurant 356 adds to the overall Porsche Experience. A perfect place for those that wish to dine with an exciting view of cars whizzing by on the racetrack! Enjoy the views during lunch by making a reservation as the restaurant has limited availability.

The Corner Tavern Our tasty tour continues with The Corner Tavern. The Corner Tavern, which is locally owned and operated, will have you feeling like a regular in no time. With its cozy atmosphere and home cooked meals, The Corner Tavern feels like a home away from home.

Make sure to sharpen your skills at their pool tables or try some of their brews and cocktails.

Plated Lounge The Plated Lounge offers a mixture of Caribbean, Latin and Asian flavors cooked with a southern flare.

This casual fine dining establishment is “sure to hit your soul and satisfy your comfort zone while opening you up to flavors you never thought tasted so good.” Chef Aleem is the owner and world-renowned chef behind this spot that acts as both a restaurant and a catering company. Chef Aleem co-authored a digital cookbook with rapper 2 Chainz? #Meal Time, a 15-recipe book filled with large dishes for the road and accompanying appetizers and sauces, came bundled with the rapper’s sophomore studio album, “B.O.A.T.S. II: #METIME Kiku Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar Kiku Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar serves up a variety of Japanese dishes that go beyond the traditional “sushi” or “tempura” some Japanese

Overdrive Lounge restaurants are solely known for. The restaurant is located in East Point, but its Japanese style Teppan-yaki cooking performed at the table will give patrons an exotic experience. For the sushi lovers, Kiku has a large sushi bar that uses “fresh fish, personality, and humor to create the best sushi Atlanta has to offer.”

Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar was named in honor of the late father and father-in-law of the owners, Gregory and Juan Smalls. The namesake Virgil raised his family on James Island, located off the coast of Charleston, SC and rich in Gullah Geechee culture. James Island inspired Virgil’s own family recipes which, in turn, inspired the menu. Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar is most known for their rice dishes, which were passed down from ancestors brought from rice producing Sierra Leone and neighboring countries. The restaurant proudly states, “Virgil’s was created to provide a space to enjoy great food, amazing service, and an abundance of love, while helping to preserve the Gullah Geechee Culture.”

The Corner Grille Not to be confused with The Corner Tavern, The Corner Grille restaurant has a modern yet relaxed atmosphere. Located on Main Street in Historic Downtown College Park, The Corner Grille resides in the original St. John’s Episcopal Church building founded in 1906. Serving chicken, seafood and steak as traditional American Cuisine with Cajun influences is The Corner Grille’s specialty. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Noodle College Park’s Noodle is a family-run restaurant with dine-in and takeout options and décor that features a 1950’s diner setting plus an outdoor garden. Noodle’s approach to Asian cuisine is one that offers fresh, made-to order dishes with flavors that are reminiscent of Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand. The dishes showcase farm-fresh vegetables paired with exotic flavors and textures.

Be sure to pair the Honey-Citrus Soy-Glazed Salmon with spicy green beans, cool cucumbercarrot slaw, and steamed rice.

Bole Ethiopian Restaurant Now in a new location, Bole Ethiopian Restaurant is a family-owned restaurant that has been serving the ATL District and surrounding community since 2010. Owner Tigist “Gigi” Legese had this to say “Our food is cooked with love. If I would not eat it, I would not serve it.

I make time to serve my customers because some travel for hours to come and eat here. I just hope that everyone takes care of themselves first.” Bole provides quality, healthy Ethiopian foods with a diverse menu consisting of various popular Ethiopian meat-based dishes as well as vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. In fact, their vegetarian and vegan dishes are some of their most popular.

Serving Food and the Community Identifying one’s business with the area in which it is located has long been viewed as a good advertising tool.

Fredericka Jones, owner of Sandtown Pub at 5819 Campbellton Road, has gone one step further-she is donating part of the revenue the pub receives back into the community where her donations help feed the homeless and underprivileged in the area.

“It is a way I can give back to the community we serve as the Sandtown community has given so much to us and our business,“ Jones said.

The Sandtown Pub, which opened in 2017, was originally known as the Tavern at Campbellton.

Jones changed the name to honor the community it serves.

The pub, open 7 days a week for lunch & dinner, also serves brunch on Saturday & Sunday. For a special treat, try the chicken and red velvet waffle.

Another program: Food Truck Fridays-sending out a food truck to different subdivisions and neighborhoods with the capability of preparing and serving a selection of six specific items from their menu. This program also offers select menu breakfast items on Saturday mornings.

“People can order from that menu, wait about 30 minutes, and then pickup and pay for their selections right at the truck.” she said.

Recently, with people voting early, the food truck visited some precinct locations, taking orders and serving the requested menu items to them, again

within 30 minutes.

State representative Roger Bruce, a regular customer of the Sandtown Pub, said Jones has always wanted to “enhance and enrich community feeling and spirit.”

“The Sandtown Pub is a community gathering place and not only attracts Sandtown residents and employees of surrounding businesses but visitors to the city from other areas as well,” he said.

Jones, who has worked in the restaurant business since she was 14, said the pub offers an all-American food menu, including an array of seafood and salads, but its most requested item is its wings in an array of sauces.

In addition, the pub sells draft & bottled beer as well as other alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic drinks.

Although many businesses have closed, at least temporarily, Jones credits the effort of the pub’s employees to make the Sandtown Pub not only a safe environment with a rigid cleanliness protocol, but, as she termed it, “a cut above” similar establishments.

Jones has instilled in her staff the pub’s goal of, when patrons leave, “they do so with a feeling that they have had a great experience, were able to network with other patrons and they are definitely coming back.”

If no one has told you about Catalina, let us be the first. This hidden gem is located in the back of an unassuming grocery store just south of Hapeville on US 19-41. The restaurant is 100% Mexican and boasts that it is not “Tex-Mex.” Patrons cannot seem to get enough of the chorizo, so be sure to give that a try. You can’t beat the choices, pricing and taste of their tacos-the shells are made fresh to order right there. Feel free to shop while you wait for the food or order it to go.

With seven locations in the metro Atlanta area, two are right here in the ATL Airport District: El Progresso II on Vesta Avenue in College Park and El Progresso I on Cleveland Avenue, El Progreso has it all. These restaurants are part store, part butcher shop, and wholly delicious. The authentic tacos are served with cucumbers and radishes to give the tacos added crunch and color. While waiting for the tacos, feel free to check out the selection of meats, spices, and pastries that cannot be found at most grocery stores.
