Welcome to the shores of Lake Saimaa
Here in South Karelia, we only have one rule: enjoy yourself. Finland’s largest lake, Lake Saimaa, offers the cleanest and most inspiring environment. Saimaa is free of expectations and stress – you can focus on relaxation and let go of your worries. The nine municipalities in the area, led by Lappeenranta and Imatra, warmly welcome you.
Although Lappeenranta and Imatra are small cities, they have a wide reach. Internationality and multiculturalism are part of everyday life, as LUT University and LAB University of Applied Sciences attract students from across the world. Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) was established in 1969 as an international science university that combines technology, business and social sciences. Lappeenranta International Airport (LPP) is located just outside the city centre of Lappeenranta, about two kilometres from the heart of the city. The airport offers scheduled flights to Bergamo, Northern Italy.
Lake Saimaa, Finland’s largest lake, extends almost everywhere with its waterways, and Vuoksi, which flows from Saimaa to Laatokka, is a downstream river known for its unique beauty. The lake scenery offers activities for every season, including cycling, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, skating, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding and boating. It is said that the openness of Lake Saimaa once shocked visiting Ostrobothnians who were used to plains. The story speaks for itself.
Saimaa has also been awarded the prestigious European Region of Gastronomy 2024 title, and the area hosts plenty of events centred around local food. Come and enjoy South Karelia’s relaxed atmosphere, magnificent nature, clean waters and delicious culinary experiences. Here, you can truly experience the best moments of your life.

Although the Sandcastle is primarily aimed at families with children, the creative sand sculptures are also sure to keep adults entertained. In the summertime the city’s tourist information office is located at the Sandcastle, and there is an equipment rental shop in the area where you can rent bicycles, canoes, kayaks and SUP boards. The bouncy castle park is sure to bring joy to younger visitors. From Myllysaari and the Sandcastle, you can also venture on the popular waterfront walkways to enjoy the scenery of Saimaa’s beaches and the historic Saimaa Canal.
The beach boulevard also houses the harbour market with its many stalls, floating restaurant Prinsessa Armaada, restaurant Kasinoterassi and Bistro & Café Veera, which is open all year round. In addition, you can also hop on a cruise to the Saimaa Canal or the archipelago, such as the Ilkonsaari island.

Historical treasures, enchanting cafés and unforgettable experiences in the Lappeenranta Fortress.
The enchanting history and vibrant present of the 375-yearold city come together on the cobbled streets of the Lappeenranta Fortress. In 2024, Saimaa is also celebrating the year of the European Region of Gastronomy with various events centred around local food. This year is also the Lappeenranta Culture Dream Year.
The cobbled street leads towards the Lappeenranta Fortress, which was founded in 1649. The fortress is more than just history. Museums, exhibitions, craft shops, cafés, restaurants and year-round events attract visitors. You can explore the history of the fortress on guided tours organised in summer. The townspeople consider the green ramparts to be the best part of the fortress. The ramparts are a place where people like to spend time and celebrate. In winter, they act as a great spot for sledging, and on May Day, the ramparts attract a crowd of picnickers.
FASCINATING HISTORY
The fortress houses several buildings with a fascinating history. One of these is restaurant and event venue Kehruuhuone owned by Etelä-Karjalan Osuuskauppa. Built in 1816, the women’s workhouse was originally founded on the initiative of Emperor Alexander I. If the log walls of Kehruuhuone could talk, they would tell numerous stories of hardship, grief, joy, happiness and achievement. Similar stories are also hidden within, for example, the Majurska House, which was built in the mid-19th century as a home for the families of Russian officers. Today, the building houses handicraft shops as well as the popular Café Majurska.
The oldest buildings in the fortress, such as the main gate guardhouse, which currently functions as the Cavalry Museum, the buildings of the Lappeenranta Art Museum and the oldest Orthodox church in Finland, date back to the last decade of the 18th century. The fortress is also one of Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark’s attractions. The cafés, restaurants, handicraft shops and museums located in the fortress are open throughout the year. Interesting sights, such as medieval martial arts enthusiasts and dragoons, can be spotted in the fortress around the year. In summer, you can enjoy the summer theatre on the ramparts of the fortress, and in winter, you can admire the ice sculptures made by art school students. During the holidays, the fortress exudes the traditional Christmas spirit.

Majurska House was built in the mid-19th century as a home for the families of Russian officers. Majurska’s pastries are skilfully baked with love and served with a big heart. The authentic décor, unique pastries and old-fashioned atmosphere of the café make the place popular among locals and tourists alike. From the very beginning, the café has been famous for its quark, apple and berry pies. kahvilamajurska.fi

Escape everyday life with unforgettable experiences
Mikko Airas, the entrepreneur of programme and adventure service company Tuplakasi Action, defines the word ‘experience’ as follows:
“It’s something that detaches people from everyday life and evokes emotions. It’s about discovering something new and surprising. It’s a real wow experience.”
Airas feels that experiences are strongly tied to nature. His company, Tuplakasi-Action, operates in the breathtaking environment of the Ukonniemi and Saimaa area in Imatra. Airas has noticed that it is often nature that impresses the visitors the most.

The power of cooperation
There is strength in cooperation. This was also realised by three tourism entrepreneurs from Imatra who decided to work together for a common goal.
For customers, cooperation means better services.
Nature, cruises and great food. This summarises the cooperation of three Imatra-based tourism companies: Discover Saimaa, M/S Emma and Vuoksi Fishing Park.
It all started during the coronavirus pandemic, when Taru Kaljunen founded Discover Saimaa, a company that offers nature experiences, cycling and canoeing trips, as well as accommodation services, and began to look for partners. Soon she found herself working together with M/S Emma’s entrepreneur Marko Kiuru and Vuoksi Fishing Park’s entrepreneur Toni Kainulainen.
The Imatra Region Development Company started to coordinate the Saimaan Vuoksi Luontoon project. Although the project has already ended, the common journey of the three entrepreneurs continues.
Cooperation benefits everyone
Cooperation provides new energy and support to entrepreneurs, but above all, it benefits the customer. Cooperation allows for creating more comprehensive services for the customer.
For example, M/S Emma provides a sauna experience for customers and takes them to see Lake Saimaa and the Saimaa islands with the help of field guide Taru Kaljunen, after which the customers are taken to Vuoksi Fishing Park for a hot bowl of salmon soup.
“There is nothing that we cannot arrange,” Kaljunen says with a smile.
We Finns have a strong mentality of surviving alone. We believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness and, on the other hand, we also want to hold on to what we have.
“Everyone needs help from time to time. There is strength in cooperation,” says Kainulainen. Kaljunen has also been happy to see that their enthusiasm for working together has also caught on to other entrepreneurs.

Enchanting nature
The Saimaan Vuoksi Luontoon joint project was named after everything that is essential: the beautiful Lake Saimaa and its unique downstream river Vuoksi, as well as the clean lake nature. Respect for nature and sustainable development are key values in tourism. “We are not able to offer fancy hotel rooms, but we do offer something else. When you hop on a sauna raft and head to the islands of Lake Saimaa or a sandy beach, the natural beauty and peace is something you cannot find anywhere else,” Kiuru says.

Experiences and activities with guaranteed departures
Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland, extends across South Karelia. Its beaches and waves offer diverse opportunities for exercise and enjoying the beauty of nature. Whether you want to go cycling, paddling or SUP boarding, or relax on a sauna raft, Saimaan Palju Events can make it happen.
Jump on an electric bike in Lappeenranta and participate in a guided tour, such as a two-night trip to the Saimaa Archipelago Route or all the way to Puumala. From the hustle and bustle of the city, the trip will take you to Sarviniemi in Taipalsaari, where you can admire the geological formations of the ice age while waiting for a ferry. From there, the trip continues on the waves of Lake Saimaa with a bicycle raft taking the hikers either to Ruokolahti or Puumala. Smaller villages and municipalities located in the embrace of Lake Saimaa offer cyclists both stunningly beautiful scenic routes and a great place to stay. If a long bike ride and an overnight stay do not suit your holiday schedule, you can also explore the rugged terrain of South Karelia on shorter tours. A fat bike or an electric bike ensures an effortless trip, even in more challenging terrain. The routes range from easy to difficult ones that require determination but are great for your mental and physical well-being.
The sauna raft is perfect for birthdays, bachelor parties and corporate wellness days. Before moving onto the waves of Lake Saimaa, you can boost the team spirit with paintball or zorb football. The Savitaipale paintball field features rough forest terrain, and the Lappeenranta field is equipped with various obstacles. A professional instructor will ensure safety and familiarise the group with the basics of paintball. You can also boost the group’s competitive spirit on the zorb football field. After paintball or a game of football, you can continue the day with dinner or enjoy the sauna raft. In summer, Lake Saimaa offers the best setting for an afterparty at the end of an action-packed day.

Paddle towards exciting adventures
Saimaan Palju Events also provides the necessary equipment and useful tips for a successful canoeing trip. A popular long-distance canoeing route on Lake Saimaa is the Väliväylä route that travels from Lappeenranta to Kouvola. As one of the longest canoeing routes in Southern Finland, it offers not only beautiful scenery and unique experiences in nature but also takes the traveller back to traditional log driving days. The 150-kilometre route requires moderate fitness due to its length, but in terms of difficulty, it is also suitable for less experienced canoeists. The route runs along narrow lakes and rivers, mainly protected from the wind, which makes it a safe choice. You should reserve 4–8 days for the trip, during which you can spend a night each in Hotel Salpa in Luumäki and Tuhannen Tarinan Talo in Kannuskoski.
Tuhannen Tarinan Talo offers a unique combination of tradition and modern comfort, making your stay in South Karelia even more memorable. The rest of the nights are spent in nature in tents. There are tourist services and lean-tos renovated for canoers at regular intervals along the route, making it a suitable excursion destination for the whole family. The Väliväylä canoeing route can connect to the Hirvikoskenhaara canoeing route and continue your journey all the way to the Gulf of Finland.
In winter, South Karelia provides diverse opportunities for snowy adventures with Saimaan Palju Events. Winter cycling with an electric fat bike offers snowy experiences in the Lappeenranta and Savitaipale region, while snowshoeing and snowshoe skiing provide an opportunity to explore the snow-covered forests and lake scenery.

Get to know the beautiful Saimaa archipelago on a cruise
“Cruising on Lake Saimaa is like sitting by a campfire. Both make you want to calm down and enjoy the silence. The element is just different,” says entrepreneur Pekka Torri from Saimaan Risteilyt. M/S Saimaa Margareta’s skipper Torri takes customers on themed, charter and scheduled cruises from the port of Lappeenranta to different parts of Lake Saimaa. He believes that people should listen to nature and spend time there in a humble and respectful manner. He leaves out empty phrases and prefers to let nature speak for itself. Nature also sensitises people and makes them open up. Torri says that over the years, he has had many different kinds of conversations with people on the captain’s bridge.
The themed cruises of Saimaan Risteilyt include ringed seal, Ilkonsaari and Salpa Line cruises. On ringed seal cruises, working on nature’s terms means quietly observing the seals lying on the rocks with binoculars. The ringed seal cruises of Saimaan Risteilyt are implemented in cooperation with WWF Finland. “We want to give everyone a chance to see the ringed seals while still allowing them to live their own lives. We share information about the ringed seals but do not turn them into a product.” We want people to see the ringed seals as a part of nature.
One of Torri’s favourite places in Saimaa is the Ilkonsaari island, which consists of two small rocky ridges running southeast-northwest. The nature is beautiful and diverse: Ilkonsaari has sandy and rocky beaches and different types of forests. Torri, who enjoys diving, is especially fascinated by Ilkonsaari because of its clear water. He quotes Father Markus, the retired vicar of the Orthodox parish in Lappeenranta, who was the driving force in building Orthodox eukteria, or small chapels called tsasounas, for quiet prayer, on Ilkonsaari, Saimaa. “Father Markus said something along the lines of ‘If you go to Saimaa, see the nature and don’t find your creator there, you won’t find him anywhere’.”
Saimaan Risteilyt also has another ship, Sister Amanda. Sister Amanda is a high-end vessel for small groups. The vessel has an alcohol licence and can also provide catering. The vessel is ideal for charter cruises and day trips for a maximum of 10 passengers. Sister Amanda is also suitable for longer cruises on all available routes around Lake Saimaa. All the cities, ports and islands of Lake Saimaa with suitable ports are within reach. You can also explore the underwater world of Lake Saimaa on your own, on a guided snorkeling tour or with a diving instructor.

A modern city hotel in the immediate vicinity of services
Original Sokos Hotel Lappee is a city hotel located in the heart of Lappeenranta, with various events held in its vicinity throughout the year. In addition to the location, the newly renovated rooms are a good reason to travel to Lappee. The rooms combine Karelian tradition, Lake Saimaa’s nature, functionality and aesthetics in a fresh way. All the rooms in the main part of the hotel were renovated in April 2023. There are two room themes: Pihka and Paatti. The light-coloured and harmonious Pihka draws inspiration from the Karelian craft tradition and wood, while the dark-toned Paatti is fashioned after Lake Saimaa and steamships. The design of the rooms emphasise respect for traditions with a modern twist. The result is fresh and peaceful hotel rooms for guests to enjoy.
The cosy sauna department is like a small spa, and it is definitely worth visiting for a refreshing break. There is a comfortable lounge area around the 14-metre swimming pool where you can enjoy refreshments. In connection with the sauna department, there is also a small gym that is perfect for working up a sweat.
Original Sokos Hotel Lappee is centrally located in IsoKristiina Shopping Centre. Sustainability as the guiding principle in hotel operations
The international Green Key certificate is framed on the wall of the hotel’s lobby as proof of the hotel’s comprehensive work for responsibility and sustainable development over the years. According to Hotel Manager Katja Pellinen, sustainability means that energy and water are not wasted, staff and customers are instructed to minimise food waste, and local companies and products are preferred in operations. Next, the hotel sought for the Sustainable Travel Finland badge, which it received in spring 2023. STF is a sustainable travel programme developed by Visit Finland. In many ways, sustainability was also taken into account in the room renovation project, both in the selection of materials and providing work for local operators. sokoshotels.fi/hotellit/lappeenranta/original-sokos-hotel-lappee

Sarviniemi has campfire sites, hiking trails, a beach and a boat dock. As the name (“horn cape”) suggests, it is a horn-shaped cape that protrudes far from the mainland into Saimaa. The area is the result of the Ice Age and is part of another Salpausselkä. Saimaa ringed seals have been spotted in the nearby waters, and the area is also a great place to see Lake Saimaa. ekvas.fi
HUUHANRANTA
One of Saimaa’s longest sandy beaches is located in Ruokolahti. The 1.5-kilometre-long beach is ideal for wading and swimming thanks to its shallow sandy bottom. There are several campfire sites in Huuhanranta, and the terrain is also suited for camping. The beach attracts a lot of campers in the summer. You can get to Huuhanranta from Kietäväläntie, which goes through Utula and towards Kyläniemi. When you descend from the ridge to the beach, the view is impressive: the blue Lake Saimaa glistens among the pine trees, and the waves of Huuhanselkä wash the beach. Just go ahead and enjoy the warm beach sand.
RUOKOLAHTI
Artist Albert Edelfelt captured the church hill of Ruokolahti in his painting Women Outside the Church at Ruokolahti (1887). Edelfelt searched for authentic Karelian people from Ruokolahti and sketched them on the spot. He made the finishing touches to the painting in Haikkoo. Behind the Ruokolahti church, in the place where the women in the painting were sitting, there is a monument commemorating Edelfelt’s visit to Ruokolahti. The Ruokolahti church, built in 1854 on a scenic spot, is a wooden cross-church. The belfry, which was built under the leadership of a local named Tuomas Suikkanen, was completed in 1752 and is also worth seeing.

Saimaa sauna tour
Finns have been ranked as the happiest nation in the world several times. It is believed that one of the reasons for happiness is the sauna: in a sauna, the mind and body relax, stress subsides and all the bad things in the world are washed away.
There are plenty of saunas to choose from in the Saimaa region. In addition to traditional lakeside saunas, there are also more unique options. For example, Rautjärvi has a classic smoke sauna for an authentic sauna experience. In Imatra, you can have a completely different sauna experience by taking a cruise on a more than 100-year-old former tugboat, the sauna boat M/S Emma. In Lappeenranta Harbour, you can bathe in the sauna aboard Prinsessa Armaada while admiring the beautiful scenery and the lively harbour.
Of course, the best saunas are the ones located on a beach or on an island, where you can easily take a dip in the water to cool off. But then someone thought of bringing the sauna from the beach to the lake. It would combine two of the best things in the world – the Finnish sauna and lake scenery. A sauna raft was born.
The sauna raft company Saunalautta-Imatra offers a unique opportunity to enjoy sauna while admiring the national scenery of the River Vuoksi. In Lappeenranta, the Saimaan Palju sauna raft, in turn, offers a unique combination of summer heat and refreshment in the stunning scenery of Lake Saimaa.
Whether you are a sauna enthusiast or just want to relax in the beautiful lake scenery, at Lake Saimaa, you can experience the magical power of the sauna and the magnificence of nature at the same time.

Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark –Natural wonders and cultural treasures
Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark is a unique area of geological and cultural significance in the regions of South Karelia and South Savo, consisting of nine municipalities: Imatra, Lappeenranta, Mikkeli, Puumala, Sulkava, Ruokolahti, Juva, Savitaipale and Taipalsaari.
Saimaa Geopark is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark network and offers visitors the opportunity to explore the geology, nature and history of the area. In the area, you can explore the remnants of the last Ice Age. The cliffs, ridges, moraines and boggy lakes are fascinating examples of the effects the ice ages have had on the terrain. Particularly interesting is the formation of Lake Saimaa, which is the result of the uplift of the land after the Ice Age. Geologists have long studied the area, and now visitors can learn more about the Earth from a historical perspective.
The Geopark offers unique nature experiences. The region’s waters, forests and swamps are home to many rare species, including one of the world’s most endangered seal species, the Saimaa ringed seal. In addition, you can spot numerous bird species in the area and enjoy the quiet and peaceful environment.
Nature is not the only thing Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark has to offer, as the area is also known for its rich cultural heritage. The villages and cities tell fascinating stories from the past, and you can also explore the local craft tradition and cuisine. In addition, the Geopark area has many historical sites and museums that offer an in-depth view of the region’s history and culture.
The area also offers numerous activities that attract outdoor enthusiasts and adventurous travellers. A glimpse of history at Luumäki
The charming Luumäki is located in the heart of the beautiful and clean scenery of Lake Kivijärvi. Luumäki is a great place to enjoy the nature and lake environment. Luumäki is known for its diverse outdoor activity opportunities, and the area is also well suited for hiking, fishing and water sports, among other things. In addition, you can learn about the local culture and traditions through the various events and festivals organised there.
The municipality also has significant historical cultural sites, such as Kotkaniemi, which is dedicated to the life and career of President Pehr Evind Svinhufvud. When Svinhufvud was appointed the Circuit Judge of the Lappee Circuit in 1908, he decided to purchase Kotkaniemi by the shore of Lake Kivijärvi in Luumäki. Kotkaniemi became the home of the Svinhufvud family, and it occupied a central position in P.E. Svinhufvud’s private life as well as governmental duties. P.E. Svinhufvud and his wife lived in Kotkaniemi until 1931, when Svinhufvud was elected President of the Republic of Finland. Svinhufvud returned to Kotkaniemi after his governmental duties ended.
Today, Kotkaniemi is the home museum of P.E. Svinhufvud and his wife Ellen Svinhufvud, and it is maintained by the Kotkaniemi Foundation. In 2018, Kotkaniemi reopened its doors to the public after extensive renovation. The museum showcases the life and times of P.E. Svinhufvud. In addition to the home museum, the main building houses a café and meeting rooms. The rooms have been restored to Pehr and Ellen’s time and are furnished with original furniture and objects. The museum also has a changing exhibition featuring various topics.
Kotkaniemi also includes a magnificent garden with outbuildings restored to their 1930s look, which gives visitors the opportunity to experience the historical atmosphere and beauty of the place. The natural beauty of Savitaipale and Tai- palsaari
Savitaipale is an enchanting municipality whose beauty is highlighted by two magnificent lakes, Kuolimo and Saimaa. Savitaipale has proven to be very attractive despite its small population size, as it is the number one cottage municipality in South Karelia. Kuolimo is a clear-water lake with beaches almost touching the Savitaipale Church. The crystal-clear waterway stretches from Savitaipale all the way to South Savo. Kuolimo, which was formed 4,000 years ago, contains remnants of the Ice Age, such as fish species Saimaa arctic char and four-horn sculpin.
The historic and scenic Partakoski offers an opportunity to see the intersection of Kuolimo and Lake Saimaa. The clean and bright rapids are a popular attraction in Southern Finland. The Partakoski landscape includes the Ruhtinaanmaja villa built by Prince A. Barjatinski, as well as the Partaranta village shop, restaurant and marina, which are open in the summer season. Kärnäkoski Fortress is located near Partakoski in the traditional landscape on the isthmus between Kuolimo and Lake Saimaa. The Russians built the fortress at the end of the 18th century to protect the capital city of St. Petersburg, with both roads and waterways being monitored from the fortress. Kärnäkoski Fortress is part of Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark.
Taipalsaari is literally located in the lap of Saimaa. Half of the surface area of Taipalsaari is made up of Lake Saimaa, and the other half consists of about seven hundred islands. The coastline, which is largely made up of magnificent rocky and sandy beaches, extends for about a thousand kilometres. Sarviniemi, located in Suur-Saimaa, is a nature, landscape and recreation destination that offers opportunities for both hiking and boating. The name of the place (“Horned Cape”) describes its appearance: Two horn-shaped lateral moraine formations created by the retreating continental glacier jut out into the waters of Lake Saimaa. Sarviniemi has campfire sites, hiking trails, a beach and a boat dock. Kyläniemi and the Rastinniemi recreational area with its beautiful sandy beaches belong to the municipality of Taipalsaari, although the road connection to the cape travels through Ruokolahti.

The freed River Hiitolanjoki
The demolition of the Hiitolanjoki dams and the restoration of the area have revived both the salmon population and the environment. The area offers many unique experiences for those interested in nature and cultural history.
The water of the River Hiitolanjoki flows freely, and the salmon swim up-river to spawn and reproduce in autumn. The freeing of the river and the demolition of three dams in Rautjärvi – Kangaskoski, Lahnasenkoski and Ritakoski – is a significant environmental act. Now all the rapids and their surroundings are ready and open to the public.
As the highly endangered landlocked salmon population recovers, nature will flourish.
“Travellers are most interested in nature. The free-flowing water of the three rapids is an impressive sight. The freeing of the River Hiitolanjoki has strengthened not only the cultural values of the region but also its natural values,” says Hanna Ollikainen, CEO of the South Karelian Foundation for Recreation Areas.
Hiking trails and resting places
The last rapid to be freed was Ritakoski in 2023. With Ritakoski, the more than two decades of work and the final three-year push came to an end – the unique river route from Laatokka to the headwaters is now free. Fishing tourism is not quite there yet, but for those interested in nature and history, Hiitolanjoki offers many exciting experiences with its demolished dams.
A kilometre-long accessible nature trail runs in the vicinity of Ritakoski and Lahnasenkoski. Kangaskoski, about three kilometres away, also has an accessible trail. All the rapids have safe viewing and resting places, toilets and campfire shelters. Lahnasenkoski also has a birdwatching tower. The bird population in the area is diverse, especially during the spring migration.
Fascinating industrial history
“The area’s power plant buildings are one hundred years old. A museum is under construction in the Kangaskoski power plant building. Old dam structures have also been left in the area,” says Ollikainen. In the museum and around Kangaskoski, you can explore the wood pulp and paper mill that operated in Kangaskoski at the beginning of the 20th century. Ollikainen points out that you can download the Kangaskoski Mobile app, which illustrates what wood processing and papermaking were like more than a century ago.

Parikkala Sculpture Park
Some say it is the most fascinating attraction in the world, while others say it is the most unnerving one. In any case, the Parikkala Sculpture Park is a place worth seeing and experiencing.
ITE artist (ITE comes from the Finnish words ‘itse tehty elämä’, which directly translates to ‘self-made life’) Veijo Rönkkönen’s statue collection is the result of over 50 years of work. There are a total of 560 concrete statues featuring various themes. The Yoga Park alone includes 250 statues doing yoga, but Rönkkönen has also taken inspiration from different cultures, animals and plants. Rönkkönen, who passed away in 2010, was an artist who preferred a solitary life. He said that making concrete statues started as an experiment, and when he learned the right technique, he didn’t want to stop. A magnificent garden was born, the statues of which are in constant dialogue with the trees, bushes and flowers. The oldest of the statues have already been covered with moss.
In Parikkala, you can also explore the area’s other cultural and historical sites, such as the Parikkala Church, which was built in 1817. The municipality charms its visitors with stunning lake scenery, as well as various hiking and outdoor activities in the surrounding forests and waterways. Siikalahti, which is also located near Parikkala, is a popular spot for birdwatchers and offers an opportunity to observe the diverse bird population in the area.
Unique attractions in Ruokolahti
The Ruokolahti area has a diverse selection of sites that will take you on a journey through nature and history. Ruokolahti Church Hill is a place full of history. The best sights in Ruokolahti include Ruokolahti Church Hill, which has been chosen as the most beautiful landscape in South Karelia, and the Ruokolahti Church situated on top of the hill. In addition to the wooden cruciform church completed in 1854, the hill also offers an impressive view of Lake Saimaa.
Ruokolahti is home to a strange erratic boulder called Kummakivi. The boulder lies on top of an egg-shaped glaciated rock, as if thrown by a giant. The natural curiosity formed about 11,500 years ago when the area emerged from underneath the continental ice sheet. Kummakivi was one of the countless boulders that travelled along the receding continental ice. By chance, the Kummakivi boulder stopped right here in the Hauklappian forest when the ice melted. If you are visiting Kummakivi, you should also tour the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark’s two-kilometre-long geological route.

From an ice cream café to a beachside restaurant
The Mankki family was supposed to set up a small ice cream café, but instead found themselves establishing Restaurant Nuotta. Love of good food has always been at the forefront of the family business.
In the summer of 2009, Timo Mankki wanted to set up an ice cream café in the Imatra passenger harbour with his son, who ran an ice cream shop. The business was set up in a ticket sales kiosk of a former steamship company.
The restaurant started as a 44-seat blini and waffle restaurant. The following summer, the restaurant was named Nuotta, which grew into a dining and event restaurant with more than 800 customer seats over the next decade.
Nuotta is still the only beach restaurant in Imatra. The location between Imatran Kylpyla Spa Resort and Holiday Club Saimaan Rauha has been central to the restaurant’s business. Becoming a restaurant owner was no surprise in itself, as Mankki has always loved cooking, catering and providing people with culinary experiences.
Owning a fish smokehouse has its benefits
As the entrepreneurs gained more experience, the menu was expanded, more staff was hired, and cooperation relationships were established with fishermen and mushroom and berry pickers. The coronavirus pandemic boosted domestic tourism, and Nuotta had no shortage of customers. At the end of the 2020 season, Restaurant Nuotta achieved first place in the restaurant category of the national Evento Awards competition.
Today, Timo Mankki and his wife Karina Mankki also run Bistro & Café Veera in Lappeenranta Harbour.
“The popularity of Nuotta is based on the fact that we have a strong concept, supported by our own fish smokehouse. However, that is not enough; in addition to local freshwater fish, you need high-quality meat products. Unlike many other restaurants, we want to stick to a wide menu.”
Both a hobby and a profession
Saimaa is the 2024 European Region of Gastronomy. The title was awarded in recognition of the unique culinary culture of Eastern Finland.
“The title is sure to attract interest, even though few people travel solely for culinary reasons. However, food can play a positive role in the holiday experience,” Mankki says.
The Mankkis are part of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Finlande association, which is invitation only. The association is a gastronomic organisation that brings together professionals and passionate enthusiasts. Timo Mankki can be said to represent both groups, having turned a hobby into a profession. ravintolanuotta.fi

Local fish dishes are the specialty of Restaurant Nuotta
Kippurasarven Särä is prepared as follows:
“First, a leg of lamb is salted for four days. Heating the oven requires about one and a half ovenfuls of birch logs. The roast is placed in the oven after the embers and ashes have been removed. Fresh alder sticks are placed under the tray to give the meat a beautiful colour and a mild smoky taste on the surface. The meat is first roasted for about three and a half hours, after which it is left to cool down, and halfcooked peeled potatoes are added. A couple more hours in the oven and the särä is ready to be enjoyed.”
It is believed that särä got its name from the hollowed-out birch trays used to roast the dish. Over time, cracks (“särö”) would form in the wood, giving the dish its name.
Authentic and honest South Karelian food
LEMIN SÄRÄ – ONE OF THE SEVEN WONDERS OF FINLAND
Lemin särä is the pride of South Karelia and represents the oldest culinary tradition in all of Finland. Restaurant Säräpirtti Kippurasarvi in Lemi attracts people from near and far with its traditional roasted särä dish. Särä is made using a recipe that is over a thousand years old. The owner of Säräpirtti learned how to make särä by working as an apprentice to his parents, who started their business in Lemi in 1978. The popularity of särä is based not only on taste but also on the authentic story behind it. Authenticity is also present in the preparation of the dish, as everything is still done by hand. The meat is salted for four days and slowly roasted in a wood-heated oven using alder sticks and birch logs. Särä is traditionally served with Finnish flatbread, home-brewed beer and mixed fruit soup.
Traditional food can also develop. When the coronavirus pandemic and restrictions hit, it was time to come up with something new. Dry meat made from lamb that had been cooking overnight in the oven was born as a result. The company invested in dryers and other equipment and created a variety of different meat flavours for sale. The handmade YÖN YLI SÄRÄ dry meat makes for a great all-purpose snack and can even be served with wine and beer. You can order Lemin Särä products from the online store or visit Herkkupuoti during the restaurant’s opening hours. The products are also available from retailers. sarapirtti.fi
