I am a self-taught sculptural artist who primarily makes minimalist assemblages of found objects. Many styles of art inspire me, but Surrealism uniquely captures my imagination and is becoming more influential in what I create. Reusing material is fundamental to my efforts. Most of the components of my pieces have had prior lives. I also create land art using natural materials such as rocks, branches and living trees and have several works available to see in the yard and forest outside of my studio.

My work is varied in subject matter. I paint many different things that are interesting or challenging. I don’t feel a need to limit myself to a “theme” or one story. Every artwork means something different to me. I love patterns, colors and layering colors. Some paintings require more than 100 hours to finish. To me, art is a necessity, and an integral part of life. I love working in my studio! It is the highlight of my day.

The only linguistic basis for my visual work would be the title, and even that is suspect. If I were pressed, I might say that I like to think of it as a sort of crucible for materialism, where the result allows for the natural attraction we have for erosion and imperfection to reign, assuaging the nerves that have become frazzled from repeatedly attempting (and failing) to produce and maintain ideal forms. Or I could say I try to make things I like to look at.

Motivated by decades traveling and in the woods, I have a deep love of building things that create lasting connections. Especially passionate to use reclaimed rustic materials and realism with a flourish of abstract. At Twin Oaks, there’s a gentle 1/2 mile trail loop trail through forest with several custom bridges, benches and art pieces along the way. In early May, wildflowers are starting to bloom, including chocolate lilies, glacier lilies, and (if its warm enough) lupine. I’ll have more to see in my indoor gallery.

My paintings offer impressions of the fierce, rugged landscape across the prairies and mountains of the American West. Open grasslands, fields of wildflowers, broken buttes of basalt and sandstone and, of course, the sky. I work to bring my impressions of these landscapes to life in oil paintings on panel and, for all of the raw intensity, to distill an almost ethereal quiet. I work toward presentations of luminous color, engaging texture and surfaces, and subtle references to landforms that come together to create compelling works.

I am fascinated by the process of making inks from materials I forage around my home. My work explores the interconnectedness of nature through color extracted from plants and minerals. Using natural materials creates a unique alchemy, inviting a different approach to mixing and layering than traditional paints. I work simply, allowing the material to lead and drawing attention to subtle layers, transparency, and the negative spaces that emerge between them. The resulting gestural marks reflect a collaboration between the natural world and my own hand.

I see the world as pattern and texture. After earning a Master’s in Textile Design and working as a textile designer, I found my artistic voice in textiles and fiber art. After losing my home and studio in the Burdoin Fire last July, I’m grateful to share tour space with Steve Kowats at Carson Art Garage.

My style and subject matter is a nod to growing up in the wilds of northern Wyoming just east of Yellowstone National Park. I started weaving in 2011 as a way to slow down —and I fell in love with it instantly. In 2019, I created Twisted Fibers Basketry to share that joy with others through teaching. I work mostly with reed and cane from Calamus rotang, a tropical vine harvested in Asia. My baskets are usually functional and beautiful, though I occasionally explore more artistic designs.

After many years creating images for rodeo promotion posters, and then a lengthy hiatus, I’ve picked up a new medium — gourds. They are an amazing canvas with almost unlimited potential. I grow and dry my gourds on the farm. Once dry and clean, I can begin to create something that was first crudely drawn in my sketch book. In most cases, a pencil sketch followed up with either dremel carving or pyrography. From there it’s adding a bit of color with ink dyes or acrylic paints.

I’m a retired art teacher. I enjoy spending time with my creative processes in clay and painting. In the summer, I’m on the water and hiking. In the winter, I live in Baja and teach ceramics. Ideas originate from both areas! My third area of art is lifecasting, which uses the body as a model, creating a sculptural form using alginate (a mother mold) and ‘Terre blanc’ as the final project. This process I do via commission. I will have examples on hand during the tour.

A lifelong drawer, I started painting two years ago, and selling my art a year ago. My focus is on realistic impressionistic portraits, often female, but not exclusively. Birds and animals are sometimes included. I’m very much enjoying experimenting with all the paints: oil, acrylic, water media, gouache, and India ink. I will have examples of many processes in my studio. I also still draw graphite and pastel portraits.

My first artistic memories are of my mother and me painting the paint-by-number ballerinas, sharing the little pots of paint while enjoying the companionship of each other. Then there were the family fishing trips where I sat in the shade and sketched while everyone else fished. Retirement renewed my interest in all things art. Today I am all about acrylics and oils; painting family, birds, flowers and wildlife. All these are abundant in the hills above Mosier, Oregon.

Art Education at the MFA Museum School of Art Boston. Majored in Graphic Art. Created a printing business then taught myself how to weave. Wove fabric for womens’ clothing and sold at craft shows across the US. After creating a double weave blanket, I found mills to mass produce “throws” to sell to stores. I then started painting the weave structures and other realistic landscapes. After moving to Hood River, I studied Chinese painting and changed my style. Living in Baja in the winter, I have been teaching weaving to a group of women for 24 years. I share my studio with one student, Charlie Dine, who has worked with me for six years.

I draw my artistic inspiration from the beautiful creation around me — dramatic landscapes, flora, fauna, and agriculture. Block printing is a type of relief printing that starts with transferring an original drawing onto a rubber or linoleum tile. The design is carved using tools that are similar to wood carving tools. Once the carving is finished, I ink the tile with oil-based, water-soluble ink, then print the design onto paper. I hang each print to dry — which takes about a week. The entire process is done by hand, each print is slightly different as a result.
