A contemporary realism painter, I use transparent and opaque watermedia to portray scenes of nature that grab my heart. My subjects range from mountain streams and wildflowers to cattle and horses on nearby ranch lands. My work is known for its luminous colors and impacting values. When I started out learning stained glass, I didn’t really have a place to work on glass so I didnt do much with glass until I moved to The Dalles. At that time, I met glass blower Andy Nichols who agreed to teach me how to fuse glass. I subsequently met Charlene Fort, who was willing to take me farther into fused glass. I fell in love with what the kiln produced and became an avid glass fuser. My inspiration comes from the world around me.

I began weaving in 2011 to give myself a break from everyday life, I was immediately taken by the craft. In 2019, I created Twisted Fibers Basketry so that I could teach others. I primarily weave with reed and cane from a woody tropical vine “calamus rotang” which is harvested in various parts of Asia. Most of my work creations are utilitarian but also attractive. Every now and then I’ll create something that is more artistic opposed to useful. I create to teach more than to sell a product.

A lifelong drawer, I started painting portraits in 2022. There are so many exciting ways to portray the female face. I have always been confident in my drawing ability, but painting a portrait felt leagues away. I went to work teaching myself how to portray the human face. I work in oil paints, watercolor, gouache, acrylic and mixed media. “The personality of the subject will drive the approach to the painting.”

My first artistic memories are of my mother and me painting the paint-by-number ballerinas, sharing the little pots of paint while enjoying the companionship of each other. Then there were the family fishing trips where I sat in the shade and sketched while everyone else fished. Retirement renewed my interest in all things art. Today I am all about acrylics and oils; painting family, birds, flowers and wildlife. All these are abundant in the hills above Mosier, Oregon.

Throughout my 17-year pastry career as owner of Polly’s Cakes, I often thought, “when I grow up again I’d like to be a potter.” Inspired by gardens, Gorge flora and a love of surface design, I use a growing collection of my own hand carved stamps to imprint slab built clay creating one of a kind ceramic fabric for each piece. The final result is somewhere between a wood block print and a pressed botanical collage. Come see the process!

I build sculpture, objects that occupy space. Sculpture can be seen from all sides, has a mass and a material. It has a surface that light moves across. I have always been drawn to form. When asked why I build a piece I am often hard pressed to give a rational explanation. It goes beyond enjoying the process of fabrication. I am drawn to pieces that ask questions. What does it mean, why is it there, what is it made of, does it do anything? I am drawn to simple forms.

I am a painter and metalsmith living in Hood River. My work features themes primarily of animals and women, often reflecting on relationships, identity, and the nuances of the female experience. These motifs appear in both my paintings and jewelry designs, with the latter turning the women who wear my pieces into living subjects of my art. My jewelry, like my paintings, are an extension of my story, giving life to themes of grace, strength, and delicacy.

I experiment with monotype, collagraph, relief, intaglio, and lithography. My creative process relies on the intuitive, informed by my senses, surroundings, and experiences. A sense of adventure spurs my exploration into divergent themes — from identity and place to the mystical, earthiness to the divine. Clean lines and delicious color are signature to my work. I collect rocks and other found items, using them as base forms for unique, organic vessels. My work celebrates the affinity we feel with the landscape — both our rootedness and our transience. I explore moments of solitude and connection, of fully occupying our space and place in the world.

I feel lucky to be a member of a centuries old craft tradition creating useful and affordable art for the middle class. I’m a craftsman at heart striving to make aesthetically beautiful, comfortable and most importantly functional pots. What excites me?
Color and texture. Beautiful forms. Handles that fit both the hand and the pot. Dynamic and resonantly luminous glazing. Kiln openings.

I am a studio potter, working with mid-range, porcelaneous stoneware. The aim of my clay work is to create something both functional and lovely. Handmade dishes add so much personality to your table and the meals it holds. I love the beauty of plants and use them for impressions in my surface decoration, as well as throw and alter flower vases in the shape of birds and owls. My studio space is shared with fellow potter, Jim Diem. We welcome you to come for a visit!

I have lived at the base of Mt Hood for more than 25 years and gather inspiration from the mountain and other Columbia gorge landscapes. My paintings reflect my love of mountains, snow, trees, and wilderness. I am known for my vivid paintings with bold shapes and color, in both watercolor and acrylic on canvas. I achieve these bold colors by using lots of pigment and not much water. I enjoy creating both abstract and realistic artwork. No two paintings are ever the same.

My work is inspired by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The wood used is salvaged, then finished in my wood shop before I oil and cure each piece. I then transfer the finished slabs to my studio where I use acrylic paint to showcase the unique grain in each while painting scenes from recent adventures and beautiful places. In addition to wood work, I love to paint with water colors, and mushroom-derived inks. There’s a story and history connected to the Pacific Northwest in every piece that I make.

I am totally enthralled with transparent watercolor pigments! I love the transparency of the color as well as the unexpected textures that are produced. The subject matter that captures my interest the most is “close-ups of nature” – flowers, fruits, foliage, birds, butterflies, clouds, etc. However, I have also enjoyed creating atmospheric portraits of our northwest landscapes. My off-grid home is in the forest; living here continually inspires my painting.

My story begins with memories of childhood — going to work with my father, an upholsterer, surrounded by bolts of fabric and passing time in my grandmother’s hardware store, poring through piles of wallpaper books and playing with colored paint chips. I see the world as a plethora of patterns, textures and colors. After receiving a Masters Degree in Textile Design and enjoying my career as a textile designer, I have found my artistic expression using my love of textiles and fiber art.

After many years creating images for rodeo promotion posters, and then a lengthy hiatus, I’ve picked up a new medium — gourds. They are an amazing canvas with almost unlimited potential. I grow and dry my gourds on the farm. Once dry and clean, I can begin to create something that was first crudely drawn in my sketch book. In most cases, a pencil sketch followed up with either dremel carving or pyrography. From there it’s adding a bit of color with ink dyes or acrylic paints.

I am a metalsmith and an enamelist. My passion is cloisonné enameling. Using fine silver or gold wire, I make pictures by bending the wire. To this I add fine-ground, colored glass that is fused and melted in a 1430-degree kiln. The process is repeated until the glass reaches the desired effect. Next the jewelry piece is set in a hand-fabricated setting of unique wearable art. I love what I do. I also love to create special commissioned pieces for a unique you..

Sarah is most excited by the intersection of art and function – how it draws the user into the art – how a beautifully crafted functional piece will be enhanced, itself, by common everyday activities. She creates most of her forms on the potter’s wheel, and then uses a process called sgraffito to etch into the surfaces of functional pieces. It’s her greatest hope to bring joy into the lives of those who interact with her art.

The only linguistic basis for my visual work would be the title, and even that is suspect. If I were pressed, I might say that I like to think of it as a sort of crucible for materialism, where the result allows for the natural attraction we have for erosion and imperfection to reign, assuaging the nerves that have become frazzled from repeatedly attempting (and failing) to produce and maintain ideal forms. Or I could say I try to make things I like to look at.
