My art practice is nurtured by the aggregate surroundings of the forest that envelopes me. As an artist, I predominantly create encaustic wax paintings. Encaustic wax is a blend of beeswax and pine resin. Its transparency and pliability allow me to be both painter and sculptor. My education includes a BFA in General Fine Arts from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.

The only linguistic basis for my visual work would be the title, and even that is suspect. If I were pressed, I might say that I like to think of it as a sort of crucible for materialism, where the result allows for the natural attraction we have for erosion and imperfection to reign, assuaging the nerves that have become frazzled from repeatedly attempting (and failing) to produce and maintain ideal forms. Or, I could say I try to make things I like to look at.

I am a metalsmith and an Enamelist. My passion is cloisonné enameling. Using fine silver or gold wire, I make pictures by bending the wire. To this I add fine ground colored glass that is fused and melted in a 1430-degree kiln. The process is repeated till the glass reaches the desired effect. Next the jewelry piece is set in a hand fabricated setting of unique wearable art. I love what I do. I also love to create special commissioned pieces for a unique you.

My story begins with memories of childhood — going to work with my father, an upholsterer, surrounded by bolts of fabric and passing time in my grandmother’s hardware store, poring through piles of wallpaper books and playing with colored paint chips. I see the world as a plethora of patterns, textures and colors. I have found my creative expression in textile design and fiber art.

I paint in oil on both large and small stretched canvases. I’m primarily inspired by the landscapes of the Gorge: the river, the mountains, the agriculture. My pieces use flat abstracted geometric shapes, pushed perspective, and a touch of whimsy. Clean lines and delicious color are signature to my work. I collect rocks and other found items, using them as base forms for unique, organic vessels. Multiple layers of pigment are hand applied, building rich texture and a tactile finish that begs to be touched! I am drawn to the clean and simple aesthetic for which the mid-century modern Scandi designers became well recognized. Stylized botanicals often appear on my work by process of sgraffito carving and/or free form pencil scribblings.

In recent years, my love for the Columbia Gorge has transformed from awe-inspiring vistas to a deep appreciation for its intricate details. I zoom in on frosted wildflower petals, capturing the delicate textures that whisper stories of resilience. These tiny details, often over-looked, become the building blocks of a vibrant embroidery of sunlight, wind, and hope. The soul of the Gorge! As an evolving artist, I strive to capture not just the majestic vistas, but the emotions this landscape ignites within us, a sense of the things that make us feel but we can’t name yet.

I experiment with monotype, collagraph, relief, intaglio, and lithography. My creative process relies on the intuitive, informed by my senses, surroundings, and experiences. A sense of adventure spurs my exploration into divergent themes — from identity and place to the mystical, earthiness to the divine. The allure of colorful birds, the vigor of animals, the radiant power of ascendant women, and the generative forces of Earth inform my work. See new images inspired by Oaxaca, Mexico.

I guess I started doing woodwork with my dad, and have been at it one way or another since then. For a while, after Vietnam, I was actually a licensed contractor in California for cabinet and millwork. Artistically, however, it has just been the last 20-25 years. I am a veteran woodworking artist based in Hood River, Oregon. I have a passion for fine woodworking with a goal to provide pieces to individuals who appreciate originally designed pieces that are unique and “one of a kind.” My influence is Art Deco and Arts & Crafts, with modern twists, emphasizing elegant lines and intricate details, including inlay, dovetail corners, and mortise & tenon joints. I use domestic and exotic hardwoods and veneers, selecting species for grain, color, and texture.

Nature is my muse. My art work is visceral and demanding. Colors and textures found in nature speak and endless language which connects the physical and metaphysical. With these concepts in mind, my glass art infuses color and texture to represent the Eternal Wheel in a snapshot of glass frozen. Truly, my studio is all I see around me.

Over 25 years ago, I found my way from the corporate world to metal art. I design, draw, and create all of my own work. I enjoy the undisciplined nature of the art and being able to let my imagination flow to create pieces from cold, static material. I’ve been lucky to live in beautiful places that inspire my work and style. My work can range from wall hangings and garden art, to large installations — from commercial signs to fences and gates. Commissions welcome!

I am a full time artist working mainly in acrylic paints and I’m known for my colorful and vibrant paintings. My style runs from representational to abstract and can be small paintings up to large scale murals. I work out of a funky but fun studio out of my home with a fantastic view of the Columbia River. I have been painting here in the Gorge for 28 years. Much of my work is public and can be seen at many various venues around the area. Welcome to my home and studio.

My transition from pastry chef to hand building building ceramics has been natural and full of creative adventure. I come from a family of artists. I spent most of my childhood learning how to create and work with my hands. I sign my pieces as E’Claire because I am Elizabeth Claire, and my grandmother’s nickname for me was E’Claire. My goal is to create functional art pieces that show warmth and personality. During the pandemic, I created a small home studio on my front porch to keep me sane. Pottery gives me a space to meditate and create. Art will always be a part of my life.

I grew up here in Hood River and have resided in the gorge most of my life. I am infinitely inspired by the beauty of nature and I believe my work is a celebration and reflection of that. My main medium is metal smithing and jewelry making, but I enjoy playing with other art forms as well, such as: creating floral mandalas, painting, weaving, resin and photography. Creativity has always been an outlet of mine, I enjoy working with my hands to make beautiful things for myself and others to enjoy.

I am a watercolor painter. I paint primarily wet-in-wet, as I love the look of transparent watercolor. I do my own matting and framing, but also mount some of my paintings on birch panels (no mats or frame). I live in the forest zone, off grid. I am continuously inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds me. I paint “scenes” that span the visual scope and find beauty in everything from cloud formations to landscapes to forest mist, foliage, fruits, flowers, birds.

I began weaving in 2011 to give myself a break from everyday life, I was immediately taken by the craft. In 2019 I created Twisted Fibers Basketry so that I could teach others. I primarily weave with reed and cane from a woody tropical vine “calamus rotang” which is harvested in various parts of Asia. Most of my creations are utilitarian but also attractive. Every now and then I’ll create something that is more artistic opposed to useful. I create to teach more than to sell a product.
