Stabler, WA — directions below jazyjen@gmail.com jensmithart.com
I am a charcoal artist, inspired by the natural world. I work on custom cradled birch panels built by my husband that I apply white paint to and sand off to let the wood grain show, or I will just work directly on the panel. My work is black and white and very contrasting, with color only occasionally finding its way in. I have a beautiful industrial studio that I share with my husband that sits right at the edge of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

962 Wind River Road, Carson, Washington kovachmetalsmith@gmail.com www.kovachmetalsmith.com
Steve Kowats has been a professional welder and fabricator since the age of 18. He retired in 2019 and now relies on his decades of experience working with all kinds of metal to create organic sculptures from found objects. He finds inspiration in nature and his work reflects it. Creating pieces that make people ask themselves “is that metal or wood?” “Is that leaf made from copper?” Steve creates for satisfaction, joy, and for the process itself.

I am a metalsmith/artist who grew up to the sound of a cross-peen hammer. I was soldering and working in my parents production studio at the age of 12. After making the Gorge my home in 2003, the beautiful landscape is always at the heart of my designs which are often about contrast, form and technique. My studio is located in downtown White Salmon, here I make jewelry and wearable art of sterling, gold, steel, brass, and copper.
Directions: Take exit 64 (Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge Exit). Cross bridge. Take a left after the bridge and then take your next right which is Dock Grade Road. This takes you up the hill to the main street of White Salmon, Jewett Blvd. Take a left on Jewett. Rebecca’s work is inspired by her natural surroundings and her love of found objects. She collects stones along the rivers and ocean shores wherever she travels. Her studio is a surreal exhibit of the beauty she finds in the world. Take a drive along the wild and scenic Klickitat River valley and you won’t be disappointed. You may spot a bald eagle or great blue heron on your way. Collections of stones, works in progress, and obscure objects await you.

Clean lines and delicious color are signature to my work. I collect rocks and other found items, using them as base forms for unique, organic vessels. Multiple layers of pigment are hand applied, building rich texture and a tactile finish that begs to be touched! I am drawn to the clean and simple aesthetic for which the mid-century modern Scandi designers became well recognized. Stylized botanicals often appear on my work by process of sgraffito carving and/or free form pencil scribblings.

All my ceramics are hand built. I can make just about anything with clay. I usually build what ever my mood allows. I work in my home in a bedroom converted to a studio and a kiln in the garage. Sometimes I get inspiration from my large flower garden. Some of the time, I see a picture of a teapot, a box, or a sculpture and try that path. At this time I’m doing little clay houses and strange weird characters… also horses carrying different objects… and chickens… All fun!

My acrylic paintings are done in what I call my “stained glass” style where the subject matter is broken up into what I think of as cells. These cells are then painted in with numerous layers of paint giving the appearance of stained glass window.

Directions: From I-84, take exit 69. In town, turn right on Washington Street and then left on 3rd Street. Turn right on Huskey Road immediately after concrete wall. Ponderosa Place is the second right off Huskey. I am at the top of the hill in cul-de-sac.

I start with natural fiber clothing, which I dye using my own uniquely created colors. I create designs that I then handpaint. My paints are made from pure pigment to match the dyes. I hand dye, paint, print, and bead each piece. During Covid, I went down a rabbit hole of upcycling furniture. I love refinishing and painting pieces with chalk paints. There will be a selection of my furniture available for the tour weekend. My studio sits atop one of the most scenic spring vistas in the Gorge.
Directions: Don’t rely on GPS! From I-84 take exit 69, follow the road into town. Turn right on Washington Street, go one block to 3rd, and turn left. Follow 3rd until out of town and it becomes State Road. From the bridge on State Road, my driveway is two miles on the left. You’ll see 1537 on a tree — address numbers DO NOT go in order. My driveway is just after 1550 that you see on the right.

My story begins with memories of childhood — going to work with my father, an upholsterer, surrounded by bolts of fabric, and passing time in my grandmother’s hardware store, poring through piles of wallpaper books and playing with colored paint chips. I see the world as a plethora of patterns, textures and colors. I have found my creative expression in fiber art and textile design. My two dimensional work includes handmade felt used in different ways and disperse dye on fabric.

I started working in stained glass many years ago and moved to fused glass after meeting another glass enthusiast about 10 years ago. At that time I fell in love with fusing glass. Now I make glass jewelry, home decor, yard and garden decor.

My work is living. The experience of painting for me is a process of reaching from within the abyss. This transforms me in the creation of each piece. You as the viewer can experience a state of being, which creates a relationship with the painting. As you change, so does your experience of the painting. My art has been my discovery process. I am a spiritual seeker and teacher. I am forever humbled by the path and maintaining the beginner’s mind.
