Gorge Artists founded the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour. This year marks our 13th year of the free public tour which showcases the wonderful art of Gorge artists and provides an insight into the environment in which art is created. It is our mission to advance art and encourage artists in the Columbia River Gorge by:

• Building community among artists and the public

• Promoting art and business education

• Providing opportunities for the public to experience and enjoy art

It is our desire to support artists so they can flourish in this beautiful scenic area and bring the experience of art to all art lovers.

GORGE ARTISTS

This year, we’ve numbered our tour starting at the “TOP”! Consider starting at our northern-most studio in Trout Lake q and then travel south, through BZ Corners w to White Salmon and other Washington studios e-1). Then work your way to our eastern-most studio on the Oregon side in The Dalles 1!-1^ and continue west through Mosier 1&1*. After reaching Hood River, travel all the way to our southern-most studio 1(-2^ and enjoy some spectacular views of Mt Hood (weather permitting) along the way. Wander north through the downtown Hood River studios 2&-4& and wrap up your visit by traveling to our western-most studio in Cascade Locks 4*. Naturally, you can tour the studios in whichever order makes the most sense to you, but we encourage you to visit ALL of our artists... They look forward to seeing you! I started painting twelve years ago. I was raised in the forest and on occasion I have made the mistake of leaving. I am now firmly planted here where I paint the plants and animals that surround me. My work is available at Art On Oak in Hood River.

Directions: Drive through White Salmon on the main street that runs through town (Jewett). Stay on that street which will turn into HWY 141 and just keep driving... and driving for 11 miles. When you get to BZ Corner, drive past The Logs a little ways and you will see the BZ Corner Launch Point on your right. I am located across Highway 141 from the launch point.

From my log cabin in the woods, I draw inspiration from the nature around me. The materials I carve are of the earth and sea, as are the totems and jewelry I make from fossil walrus, mammoth, and corals.

Directions: From WA Hwy 14 turn north on Alt 141. At the juncture of regular 141 turn left toward Husum. In less than a mile 0.8 turn left on Powerhouse Rd. Go 1.75 miles to 164. Swing wide on driveway.

As an experimental artist, my objective is to create abstract aesthetic works of art by utilizing mixed-mediums in order to discover unique visual imagery found in processes that are often tentative and incremental.

Ted Olson holds a BA in Fine Arts from Portland State University and an MFA in Visual Communications from the University of Kansas. Olson has placed paintings in many homes, galleries, and offices.

Kristie Strasen is an award-winning textile designer, colorist and weaver of small woven pieces. Following 35 years in textiles design in NYC, Kristie moved to the Gorge in 2017 to pursue her passion for color and all things textile.

Experience the only working fine arts studio on the Columbia Gorge River basin. I will showcase and discuss the process behind my one-of-a-kind creations in paint & clay and my renowned paintings of pomegranates.

Overlooking 3 Mile Lagoon, my two-level studio provides river views and a close up look at The Pit, an earthen hole filled with wood shavings and bisque ware, then set on fire, covered with metal sheeting and left to burn three to five days.

Directions: On I-84 East take Exit 87, turn north. Proceed on Hwy 197, take left at McDonald’s and Water’s Edge. Go straight on NE Lone Pine Blvd. until it turns into Blue Heron Court. New inspiration was found in 2018 through a month long stay New York City. Time spent in Harlem and at the Metropolitan Museum and the youthful eyes of children brought new bodies of work, new mediums and renewed interest in ongoing projects.

Life demanded my full attention: I continued to notice the beauty that is light, line, and color around me. Those images are yearning to be set free. A strong printmaking history translates well to multilayered glass where light plays in the spaces.

I started in the 1980’s with free handing my art on clothing. I had before created a clothing line with knits and lace, dying my custom colors. Adding my drawings, I made the byrkitwear line. My inspiration comes from my lifestyle living in the Gorge.

Directions: From Interstate 84, take EXIT 69. As you enter the town of Mosier, take a RIGHT on Washington St.Go one block to 3rd. Turn LEFT on 3rd. Stay on 3rd and it becomes State Road. Once you have crossed the bridge, my driveway is on the LEFT at 2 miles up from bridge. Signs at bottom of driveway on State Rd.

I paint primarily wet-in-wet, as I love the look of transparent watercolor. I do my own matting and framing, but also mount some of my paintings on birch panels (no mats or frame). I live in the forest zone, off grid. I am continuously inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds me. I paint “scenes” that span the visual scope and find beauty in everything from cloud formations to landscapes to forest mist, foliage, fruits, flowers, birds, and butterflies. I am a member of the local artist co-op, 301 Gallery, downtown Hood River.

Directions: Take I-84 Exit 64 and turn south to Hwy 35. Continue on Hwy 35 about 17 miles. Driveway comes off Hwy 35 to the left (east) one third mile past Baseline Rd. Driveway is 0.9 miles long. Follow signs to studio. Parking: Parking available by the studio.

Large, magical landscapes of the Upper Hood River Valley are my current subject matter. Pear trees, Mt. Hood, and Parkdale all appear in my bright, whimsical paintings. They are created with acrylic and oil paints on canvas; meant to make you smile!

I feel lucky to be a member of a centuries old craft tradition creating useful and affordable art for the middle class. What excites me? Color and texture. Beautiful forms. Handles that fit both the hand and the pot. Dynamic and resonant glazing.

I’m a recovering control freak. Really. I’m trying to learn to let go and let my inner artist have free reign. I want a plan; she wants to play in the paint. When I let her go, I never know what will happen. But it’s guaranteed to be exciting!

Directions: Exit 64 Hood River South on Hwy 35 for 8 miles. Right at Hwy 282 (Sign for Odell) approx 1.5 miles. Left on Wy’East approx 1/2 mile. Right into gravel drive by mailbox with #3660. Go all the way down the drive past the gray house and barn until you reach house at end (in the trees).

The gallery exhibits beautiful woven samples of color, design, and weaving structures. The flexibility of the looms, techniques, and patterns will inspire visitors as original fabric, rugs, towels, and blankets are displayed. Our studio is an array of inspired creations. Our weavers create gorgeous effects by warping threads under tension and interweaving various colors and patterns.

Directions: From I-84 Exit 64 head south on Hwy 35. Go 6.7 miles and turn right on Davis Dr. that becomes Highway 281. Proceed .8 miles. The destination is on the right behind the Chevron Station. The studio is upstairs in the light gray green colored warehouse. Parking: Parking available within gated area.
