GORDONIANS, Welcome to the Spring edition of the Gordonian newsletter, which compliments the online Gordonian community website and our social media.

Saturday 22 January, 2022 saw the much anticipated return of our beloved Whitehall Parade in memory of General Charles Gordon.

The weather was fine and dry and the students were thrilled to be able to experience this treasured tradition. The Parade, along one of London’s most iconic streets, was cancelled due to the pandemic last year, for the first time in living memory. But the 200 students together with the Pipes and Drums, more than made up for the missed event as they made their way along Whitehall to the General Gordon statue on the banks of the Thames. There, wreaths were laid on behalf of the Gordon family; the Gordonians and Governors, Trustees; staff and students.

This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Pipes and Drums band and many celebrations are planned throughout the year to mark this milestone. See page 5 for more details.

GORDONIAN COMMUNITY REPORT Saturday 22nd January after the Whitehall Parade, Gordonians gathered in The Shades pub, just around the corner from General Gordon’s statue, for a long overdue reunion. Gordonians who left School between 1969 and 2020 gathered for a good old catch up. Lots of laughter and a good time had by all.

On February 24th 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and as we go to print the war is still on going and the future is uncertain.

Gordon’s School wanted to support the people of Ukraine who had to become refugees in other countries. The School opened their doors on multiple occasions to collect donations for supplies that would be sent to support those effected. There was also an online collection which raised £8,690.12 for the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.

24th January saw our inaugural in-person Gordonian Advisory Panel meeting. In attendance were Paul Ivory 7937 (1980), Jonathan Bell 7918 (1980), Susan Meikle (Bursar), Jennifer Taylor (Head of Finance & IT) and Sue Parkin (Alumni Officer).

Accounts for FY19 were reviewed by all in attendance and signed off by Paul Ivory.

Thursday 10th March we welcomed back to School Gordonians Sammy Northsworthy (2004) Windsor, Wayne Munday (1984) Khartoum and Richard Palmer (1979) Woolwich who kindly volunteered their time and Business Expertise to be a Dragon and support the Y10 GCSE Business Studies

Dragons’ Den event. See pages 12–13 to find out what these Dragons have been up to since leaving Gordon’s.

On the same day, we were thrilled to watch a Career Insight Talk by Gordonian Josh Fedder 9861 (2003) Sandringham, titled ‘A career in Space Travel’. Overview: For many, a career in space means becoming an astronaut, or perhaps an aerospace engineer. But like space itself, the pathways to launch a career in the UK space sector are vast. The space industry is rapidly growing and new jobs are being created every day. In this talk, you will learn about the different career pathways that space offers, and Josh will reflect on his own career in the Civil Service, both in the UK and abroad, and the many exciting opportunities that this path offers. This talk may be interesting to you or to someone you know. We are looking forward to welcoming Gordonians back to School for Annual Parade and the Gordonian Memorial Service which will be held on Saturday 2nd July 2022. Full details can be found on page 16. We would like to let you know that the Memorial Service for Jay Tamsitt 7311 (1969) will now be incorporated into the Annual Gordonian Memorial Service on July 22nd at 11:00am in The Chapel of St Edward the Confessor.

GORDONIAN AWARDS This summer we say Goodbye to our 2019 Gordonian Award winners Harvey Hewson and Ryan Knight. They are both leaving Gordon’s School on a path to continue with their passion and forte of Football and Drama. We are immensely proud of what they have achieved and how they have continually supported and represented the School throughout their years at Gordon’s. A special thank you to Ryan Knight who sang Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring (J.S Bach) at the Gordonian Memorial Service last year and who is planning to sing again this year.

We wish them all the best for their futures and would like to thank them for being wonderful ambassadors of the Gordonian Awards. We look forward to keeping in touch and hearing about the next chapter in their lives.

At Easter, we said farewell to Christine Walker who retired after working at Gordon’s School for 19 years, first as a music teacher and latterly as school organist and music administrator.

Kate Stapely was Teacher of English at Gordon’s School for 14 years from 1 September 2008 to 31 March 2022 and served as Acting Head of English early in the 2010s, before later becoming the Key Stage 5 English Coordinator.

SCHOOL NEWS – ROB AND HEATHER PAVIS FAREWELL After almost eight years at Gordon’s, Rob and Heather Pavis are swapping the leafy surrounds of Surrey Heath for the surf on the North Devon coastline where Rob will take up the Headship at Kingsley School.

As for the abiding memories he will take with him, Mr Pavis said “So many memories. Obviously the big ceremonials but I think Annual on the Front Field for the first time was a real ‘wow moment’ for me.

And the most rewarding part of his job? “The greatest satisfaction from my work and the biggest joy that I have here is seeing the children happy. I secretly stand by and just look at happy children and I get such a warm glow from knowing that I am part of making that happen. That is the most fulfilling role”.

What is he most looking forward to about taking over the Headship of Kingsley School with students ageing in range from babies to young adults? “I’m looking forward to ultimately building something that has my name on it” he said, adding: “Keeping Heather out of the nursery will be my greatest challenge”!

Rob Pavis Rob, Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Heather, who heads up China House, moved to Gordon’s in 2014 from Steyning Grammar School in Sussex where Rob was Assistant Head and Director of Boarding.

While Rob’s time at Gordon’s involved leading a five year digital strategy and developing the sport and curricular at the school, it was through the pandemic that his prowess really came to the fore. Who could forget the cartoons, online assemblies, the ‘disappearing’ Japanese cooking lesson? All were enthusiastically devised and implemented by him.

His biggest achievement at Gordon’s, he says, was welcoming the first boarders into the bespoke Year 7 residential boarding house, Woolwich. “I conceived it, was involved in the design and the building and it has completely transformed boarding here. Whenever you go down to Woolwich it is just packed full of happy kids. It is light and fun, exciting and everything that boarding in Year 7 should be. It’s just magical there”.

He continued: “These children in Year 7 are happy and settled and when going into senior houses they are ready to go into them, they want to go into them.

“It has also brought the boys and girls together. They have learned to live with each other, learned tolerance, acceptance, respect, it has been fantastic.”

While she exudes a sense of calm and order, the quietlyspoken Heather Pavis, does admit to another side since joining China as Head of House: “I’ve become really competitive!” she confesses, adding: “as I am not in the least sporty, it’s something that I have been quite surprised at”.

She has supported her girls’ Day House on the edge of football pitches; netball courts and through the seemingly endless cycle of other Inter-House competitions but prizes, above all, the winning of the Longmoor Drill Cup on three occasions.

“It’s a definite highlight of my time at Gordon’s” she says.

“Longmoor is special because the whole House is involved.

You spend all that time preparing but what’s really nice is the camaraderie when everyone is getting ready and plaiting hair and helping each other. It’s a really, really close feeling. When they go out there and perform well, it’s amazing.”

It’s being a part of their journey from child to adulthood that is most cherished by Mrs Pavis.

For her part, once she reaches her new seaside home, Mrs Pavis plans on taking time out, perhaps restarting her vintage wedding catering business. But high on her agenda is paddleboarding!

Reflecting on over seven years at Gordon’s as a Head of House, she said: “I love the job, have always loved it. I have never had a day when I’ve woken up and thought ‘I don’t want to go to work today’.”

“This has just been the most amazing place to work. When you get into the bones of what Gordon’s is about it’s how much the staff care about each child, I think it is just second to none. It’s something I haven’t experienced in the same depth at other schools. You know every child, what makes them tick – and blow up! You just know them. It’s been an absolute pleasure and privilege” she says, adding: “A large part of me does bleed green”.

SCHOOL NEWS – PIPES AND DRUMS 80TH ANNIVERSARY There are many special events happening throughout the 2021/22 academic year to mark the Pipes and Drums 80th Anniversary. On page 8 you can read about the celebration concert that took place in February.

A custom-made Pipe Banner and Pin badge were designed and made. The pin badges were given to all members of the Pipes and Drums band and sold to cover the production costs.

Feather Bonnets In February, The Gordon Foundation auctioned 5 Feather bonnets and raised a total of £385 to go towards new equipment for the Pipes & Drums. The feather bonnets were introduced as part of the Band uniform later in the Band’s history around the year 2000. We believe that this was due to the connection to the Guards. However, originally when the Boys came to West End Home from Dover, they wore glengarries and thus the Band have gone back to its original roots and now wear glengarries. There are more feather bonnets to sell.

Meet the leader of our Pipes & Drums

During Lockdown 2020, as a creative challenge to mark the 80th anniversary, Mrs Scotson, Senior Pipe Major gave students a two bar phrase as an ending to one measure of a 6/8 march.

Students were then asked to create and compose six bars to complete the measure. 4 students rose to the challenge and between them, came up with a four parted 6/8 march. With the support of Gordonians and The School community (via Facebook) the title of the piece was decided: ‘The Spirit of Gordon’. The piece was composed by I. Bethune, A. Kermeen, J. Gibson and L. Massie, and was first played on September 19th 2021 at a School Parade. To hear this piece of music please visit the School website www.gordons.school/page/?title=Pipes+and +Drums&pid=101.

Mrs Scotson Mrs Scotson is The Senior Pipe Major at Gordon’s School. She was taught by her father, John MacDonald, who had learnt to play at the Army Apprentices College at Chepstow under the instruction of Pipe Major Jimmy Hood. Her first set of pipes were gifted to her by her Grandpa, who also played, which were believed to have been played in the Crimean War. Mrs Scotson began her career at Gordon’s School in October 2016 as a part-time Piping instructor for Period 7. In November 2018 Mrs Scotson was brought on full time to give one to one lessons to students on the pipes and establish a proper programme for the Pipes and Drums, introducing more evening and morning rehearsals.

Mrs Scotson has been reading through the old Gordon Boys’ home Gazettes and looking at the photo archives to reflect on the 80 year journey of the, now 50 strong, Band of Pipes and Drums who continue to reflect the ceremonial tradition of Gordon’s School in everything they do.

Reflections Queen Victoria founded the Boys’ Home in Dover. From inception, in 1885, it had a Pipes and Drums contingent who were taught by the Seaforth Highlanders, who, at the time, were posted to Dover Castle.

SCHOOL NEWS – PIPES AND DRUMS 80TH ANNIVERSARY Sadly, the Home was bombed in 1941 and the Band was moved to their new Home in West End, now Gordon’s School. Pictured below are the six boys who came from the Dover Orphanage to West End, who are the founding members of the Gordon’s School Pipe Band as we now know today, forged over the last 80 years.

The next Piping instructor was Mr Thomson (late Highland Light Infantry). We don’t have exact dates but from these two photographs and content in the gazettes, Mr Thomson was at Gordon Boys’ for around two decades and was instrumental in continuing to grow and develop the high standards of the Pipe band.

Annual 1964 – Inspecting Officer talking to Mr Thompson, long serving instructor of Pipes & Drums The original members of the Band in the 1940s marching through London after the Memorial Service for General Gordon When the boys arrived in West End, the Committee of the Dover Home made available the complete uniforms and pipes to the West End Home. Piping instruction was initially delivered by the Pipe Major Sergeant Thomson of H.M. Scots Guard. The 1942 Gordon Boys’ Home Gazette states how “their performance was excellent, augurs well for the future, as we already have volunteers applying to learn the pipes and carry on this new addition to our training in music.” One could say that statement was somewhat pertinent when one sees the size of the ceremonial Band now.

At this point in the Band’s story, it would seem that the drummers were more affiliated with the (Military) Band. Their instruction came from the Drum and Fife teacher, Mr Nowlan.

After Mr Thomson (late Highland Light Infantry) left the school, the Pipes and Drums received instruction from leading pipers and drummers of the Guards, as, at the time, the Guards Depot was located in Pirbright. Often they were sent to the Depot of an evening and sometimes the instructors visited the school.

Going through the archives, the pipers were in high demand for various events. In the early days, it would appear that pipers also doubled up as Highland Dancers, so quite often it is noted that the ‘pipers and dancers’ performed at various locations as well as at the annual Christmas Concert and Annual Inspection.

SCHOOL NEWS – PIPES AND DRUMS 80TH ANNIVERSARY

1953 – Highland dancing at Annual Inspection What is great to see is that the community engagement that was clearly established and developed then, still continues today. For example, Chobham Remembrance Parade; this is something the Pipes and Drums continue to do which is a long standing commitment noted in the Gazettes.

In 1954, the school was asked by SSAFA for the Pipe Band and Dancers to give a display at Olympia at Betram Mills’ Circus in aid of the “Save the Children Fund” in the presences of Their Royal Highnesses The Duchess of Kent and Princess Marie Louise. Additionally in 1954, at the request of the Caledonian Society, and sponsored by the Daily Telegraph, the Pipe Band gave a display at the Tattoo and Highland Games in aid of the Caledonian Schools. On the 22nd May 1954, the Band and pipers went to Brighton to a Film Premiere in connection with the Cadet Movement at the request of the Duke of Norfolk and the Cadet Sussex Association. Other events of note are taking part in the Royal Tournament in the 1950s, playing in front of Her Majesty The Queen at Westminster Abbey for an Observance of the Commonwealth and the Lord Mayor’s Show, to name but a few. The demand for the Band has never ceased which is evident from the list of engagements that the Band has committed to this academic year (see page 9).

Annual 1963 In the 1970s, Mr Daltrey, a drum instructor, donated a drum named ‘The Daltrey Drum’, which now sits in the Band Room. Students would have to do a ‘drum off’ in the Gym in order to win the prize. This tradition sadly petered out, however, it was resurrected in 2018 again.

This year 2022, Callum Marr of 4 Scots The Highlanders is coming to judge. The winner will be presented the Daltrey Drum prize The Daltry Drum being awarded to at this year’s prize-giving a Gordon Boy named Cane in 1972 and will have their name engraved on the Daltrey Drum Shield in the Band Room.

SCHOOL NEWS – PIPES AND DRUMS 80TH ANNIVERSARY It was during the early 2000s that the Band really grew to what we see today. Students now have access to free one-to-one piping and Highland snare drumming lessons and in addition to Period 7, which acts as a training band, there are morning rehearsals twice a week and Period 8 rehearsals too, one of which is purely focussed on competitions.

Students now volunteer to attend Brookwood Last Post Association’s Remembrance Services at Brookwood Military Cemetery to pay their respects to the Fallen and represent the School and in turn, they are automatically selected to represent the School and Band at the Last Post Association’s Remembrance Service at Menin Gate. The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial in Ypres, Belgium.

In 1970, it was noted in the Gazette that ‘at the invitation of the Brookwood Last Post Committee, 7359 Pipe Major I Bursby was invited to attend and play his pipes at their ceremony at the Menin Gate in May’. This tradition petered out but was resurrected back in 2019. This year, on July 6th, will see their return to Menin Gate for the second time.

80th Anniversary Celebration Events

In the warm lit Chapel of St Edward the Confessor, on the evening of the 25th February 2022, the Pipes and Drums held their 80th anniversary celebration concert.

Starting the evening off, a small group played ‘The Spirit of Gordon’ which was composed by four students in the Pipes and Drums over the National Lockdown in 2020. A range of group and solo performances followed, including performances from our invited guests: The Sevenoaks Trio; The Scots Guards Association Pipes and Drums South; The City of London Pipe Band; Pipe Major Roger Huth; Solo Piping Judge Roddy Livingstone; and the Highland Dancing display from the Esslemonts.

A wonderful touch to the evening were the connections that the invited guests had with the School. In the late 1970s to the early 1990s, when the Guards Depot was located in Pirbright, as was the Piping School, pipers and drummers from Gordon’s were sent to the Piping School in order to receive tuition from leading Army pipers and drummers of the time, most notably, under the instruction of Pipe Major Linden Ingram and latterly Pipe Major Roger Huth. Sometimes they would come to Gordon’s to give tuition. Therefore we were very pleased to have the Association Band there to give a performance, of which Pipe Major Linden Ingram is currently a member. Recently established in 2016, the City of London Pipe Band, Grade 2, rehearse once a month at Gordon’s in the Band Room on a Sunday. Solo Piping Judge Roddy Livingstone has been the adjudicator of several competitions that students have taken part in and was the judge of the online Independent Schools’ Solo Piping Competition that Gordon’s hosted for the first time in conjunction with Radley College.

Pipe Major Roger Huth used to teach in Period 7 back in the 1990s and 2000s. Thus it was very special to have them their to celebrate our anniversary.

2019 Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium

A range of music was heard, from Slow Airs, to Jigs and Reels, Strathspeys and Hornpipes, Piobaireachd and a fairly contemporary, layered texture tune called ‘Steam Train to Mallaig’. Mention should be made to our Highland Dancers who learnt the Highland Fling in only three weeks and put on a great performance. Two of our students gave solo performances of a very high standard. It was wonderful to see the Sword Dance and Seann Triubhas performed by the Esslemonts. One of the students giving a solo performance had a technical difficulty, but it did not faze him and he picked up and carried on in true Gordon’s fashion. Our Finale saw all performers create an avenue from the door of the Chapel to the Parade square,

SCHOOL NEWS – PIPES AND DRUMS 80TH ANNIVERSARY

March 2022 Pipes & Drums assemble outside the band room for members of the audience to walk through, serenaded under the moonlit sky. Members of the audience have since communicated that the Finale was very emotional and it made it an evening they will always remember.

The concert was in aid of Fight for Sight, which actively supports one of our students, and also SSAFA, The Armed Forces Charity which supports our Forces community, many of our students being the children of those serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. We were delighted that ticket sales, bar sales and donations given on the night made £614 for each charity. A great success all round.

Major-General Charles George Gordon would be proud.

For the second time, we are going to have the ‘Big Blaw’ in the amphitheatre outside the Chapel before Annual Parade on 2nd July 2022 around midday. We would actively encourage as many Gordonians to come and join members of the current Pipes and Drums to share your memories, and if you are up for it, a tune or two!

Friday 18th November we have a Pipes and Drums fundraiser in the form of a Ceilidh. There will be a raffle, a buffet and lots of dancing. All proceeds will go to the Pipes & Drums Band towards trips, uniform and equipment. We hope to see you there! ROLL CALL Congratulations to Gordonian GEORGE WHITEMAN (2017) Balmoral, who recently graduated as a commissioned officer in the RAF from the RAF College, Cranwell. Flying Officer George Whiteman, who was a member of the school’s Combined Cadet Force RAF, started his Modular Initial Officer Training Course in June last year and will begin his next stage of training as a Pilot. A former Drum Major in the Pipes & Drums who led the Whitehall Parade in January 2019, Flying Officer Whiteman’s graduation in December was all the more special as his father Flight Lieutenant Stuart Whiteman also graduated, having undertaken the Commissioned Warrant Officers Course!

In the New Year Honours list we saw Gordonian HANNAH RUSSELL MBE become HANNAH RUSSELL OBE! Gordonian Hannah Russell OBE has a lot to celebrate. Hannah has been busy racing and representing @wearecomast in Aberdeen at the @citi British Para-Swimming World Series Event.

Hannah has won 2x World Series Champion Gold Medals, 1x World Series Silver Medal and 2x British Champion Gold Medals.

Always a treat to welcome back a Gordonian to School. On March 1st, the Reverend DENIS ROBINSON, a member of staff at Gordon’s for 37 years, popped in to see students and staff and the Chapel, where he was School Chaplain for 27 years.

She beat the current record of 5,555 by the 13th hour but continued for 24 hours to reach a total of 6,247!!

Lauren decided to challenge herself for her birthday this January to raise money for the charity Rock2recovery.

SPORTS UPDATE GORDONIAN RUNNERS

While the rest of us were hunkering down to avoid Storm Franklin, Gordonian Runner Mark Bissett 8077 (1982) was running The Brecon to Cardiff Ultra Marathon 2022. Mark, pictured on the left, said that his Gordon’s Odd Ball Beanie Hat was essential in keeping him warm and focused whilst Storm Franklin blasted them from start to finish with freezing gales, torrential rain, sleet and hail. ‘This was some of the worst racing conditions I have experienced’ said Mark who completed the 43 miles – in an impressive 8hrs 25 mins. Well Done Mark!

We are thrilled to share the news that Old Gordonian FC football team, ‘The Camels’, have signed a renewed Sponsorship deal with Boz’s Fruit and Veg in Woking. We would like to thank them for their continued support. The boys designed a new Home kit, pictured below, in time for next season where they will continue to compete in The Aldershot and Camberley Sunday League.

The Gordonian Runners continue to impress with their race achievements this year.

Steve Davis 7930 (1980) has been very busy running many races this year. In March, he completed The Limassol, Cyprus Half Marathon in 1:59:16. Well done Steve!

Graham Bartlett 8114 (1983) also went overseas in March to complete the Benidorm Half Marathon in 2:23:59. Well done Graham!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? JOSH FEDDER 9861 (2003) SANDRINGHAM

FONDEST MEMORIES My fondest memories come from the camaraderie and the many adventures through the CCF. From the first time experiencing zero-G in a glider with the RAF to the survival skills learnt from camping in the bush at military camp. I remember one evening particularly vividly, caked in camouflage and crawling across the local heath to capture a target guarded by Mr Fox. I was wet, I was cold, I failed miserably, but it was tremendous fun and there was always tea and toast waiting back at Sandringham House.

LIFE AFTER GORDON’S After Gordon’s, I chose to study Economics and German at Aberystwyth University – with its sandy beaches and three National Parks on its doorstep you won’t find a more stunning setting to study. I then left University with no clue what to do and spent the next three years working for a German market research agency. I had really great times with the company, but ultimately felt that it wasn’t the career for me. I resigned from the job and spent the next three months backpacking across South-East Asia, before moving to New Zealand.

I landed several policy roles across New Zealand’s Civil Service, with my final post in the Department for the Prime Minister.

I recently moved back to the UK to spend more time with family and now lead a team in government as Head of Space Strategy – a role that has taken me to visit a fusion reactor, satellite vacuum chambers, driverless car test sites, and all being well the first rocket launch from the UK by the end of this year!

ADVICE TO YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF Most people don’t know what they want to do immediately after school (and in my case even long after university!) – and that’s ok. The important thing is to start exploring your passions and use your time out of school wisely to build skills around these. Whether it’s advocating for change, gaining work experience, making connections, volunteering... Finally, University is one option, but not the only option. It worked for me, but many of my colleagues in the UK Space team come from all walks of life – there are many doors that lead to a career in civil service (and space!).

WHEN WERE YOU AT SCHOOL: 2002–2009 FONDEST MEMORIES Hockey with Miss Clarke was one of the best times each week, playing a sport with friends and going away and competing against other teams.

Loved being in Windsor house, I made friends for life and memories I will never forget.

As much as I didn’t enjoy marching as much as hockey, it’s now an excellent party trick ;) My friends constantly make me march as they have never done it!

LIFE AFTER GORDON’S I left Gordon’s and went to Exeter university, studied history and then moved to London and started working in sales and marketing. I eventually realised I loved fitness so decided to take a PT course and pursue a career in personal training.

I now work at a gym called MANOR in Victoria and do classes, personal training and I run the operations. I work with amazing people and love my job. I’m glad I took the risk.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHALLENGE AND SUPPORTING ROCK2RECOVERY I’ve always loved burpees and during lockdown I decided I wanted to do something different and raise money for charity. I saw a 1 hour record and then thought why not try 24 hours. I didn’t realise quite how tough it was going to be, but looking back I’m so happy I did It. The previous record was 5,555 and I managed to do 6,427 burpees. I couldn’t have done it without the people there supporting me and staying with me the entire time. I chose rock2recovery as it’s a charity close to our hearts at MANOR and the work they do to support the fight against stress in our armed forces, veterans, 999 communities and their families is incredible.

WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU? Ultra marathon 135 miles in September and an ironman in October, I can’t really swim though so need to start learning!

ADVICE TO YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF Be yourself and stop worrying about what other people think, easy to say now, but eventually you will realise the main person that matters is yourself and how you think and feel about yourself!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? MAX HENDERSON 11544 (2014) GRAVESEND

WHEN WERE YOU AT GORDON’S 2010–2014 FONDEST MEMORIES Miss Ashton’s English class in Year 8 – it was loud and rambunctious. There was space for neurodiversity to thrive. Your value wasn’t determined by how quietly you lined up for class, or how often you remembered to bring a pen, but by how hard you tried and how much you cared.

The environment forged friendships – in fact, the boy I sat next to in Miss Ashton’s class I now work and live with – he went on to get an English literature degree from Queen’s University Belfast. Mr Wadey for caring enough to notice I was different and not obstinate. Him referring me, leading to an ADHD diagnosis, was without a doubt the most positively impactful thing to ever happen to me. I hated him for it, which I’m sure he knew would happen, but I could not be more thankful for it as an adult.

LIFE AFTER GORDON’S After eventually accepting that further education wasn’t for me, I fell into an admin role at an IT distributor. I discovered a latent interest in software (and money) and grew to understand myself more. I decided to pursue a career I could succeed in because of my personality, not in spite of it. 5 years later, I now work for a unicorn startup (google it) responsible for delivering projects that enable the biggest companies in the world to foster an environment of togetherness and inclusivity.

ADVICE TO YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF You do not have to choose between doctor, lawyer and homeless. There are infinite paths to success, and those who carry the drive and vision to be successful will always find it, no matter where they begin their journey. During my career at Gordon’s, some words used to describe me were: Bright, disruptive, unfocused, distracting, loud, class-clown, frustrating. RICHARD J PALMER 7949 (1979) WOOLWICH

FONDEST MEMORIES I joined in 1975 and it was a very different school to what we see now, despite many of the old buildings being largely unchanged! In terms of school activities, I was a keen swimmer and loved shooting but wasn’t great at football or rugby, so at the time I think I just ‘did my time’ and tried to do reasonably well academically. Like many boys, I was at Gordon’s because my parents were always moving (Dad was in the Royal Marines, then the Royal Navy). I enjoyed playing trumpet and for some reason became a bugler, which meant getting up early and going to bed later than everyone else during the weeks when on duty to wake everyone up every morning at 7am and play the various calls needed during the day and for Sunday parades. All that for an extra 5p per week (meaning 35p per week pocket money!). When I left, I did miss the place in some ways but to be honest, I’m not sure why. Maybe the sense of belonging somewhere for 4 years was novel in itself. On reflection, I think those 4 years in what was a tough environment, were the making of me, but to be honest, any favourite memories would be related to when we were able to get out of grounds and up to a bit of mischief, away from the constraints of the school itself!

LIFE AFTER GORDON’S I went to Exmouth Upper School to do my A-levels in 1979 and then Warwick University where I received my BSc(Hons) in Microbiology & Virology in 1984. That convinced me that although I wanted a science-related career, I didn’t want to work in a laboratory, so in September 1984, I was fortunate to get a job as sales representative for Janssen Pharmaceuticals, selling to pharmacies in the NW of England. This was great grounding for me, after which I took a Diploma in Marketing and then progressed over the next 30+ years through various management positions in UK pharmaceutical organisations, finishing my career in a number of general management and global executive positions in the US, Switzerland and finally back in the UK. The Covid pandemic brought an end to the weekly, worldwide travel schedule and I decided to leave full-time employment and set up as a management consultant, specialising primarily in strategic planning in the Global veterinary pharmaceutical market.

ADVICE TO YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF Work hard and try not to take things too seriously. If you don’t enjoy the job, bite the bullet and look for another one. Life’s too short. To be honest, I wouldn’t do anything differently if I had to start again because I felt I always followed my own internal code for better or worse. Sometimes my approach to life held me back, but things always worked out in the end and overall, I have enjoyed my career and life to-date, whilst maintaining my own standards.

GORDONIAN ENTREPRENEURS SAMMY-JO NORSWORTHY 10069 (2004) WINDSOR

FONDEST MEMORIES My fondest memories are those spent with friends in the common room of Windsor House. Those friends with whom I’m still good friends today. Other fond memories are of my art lessons with Mrs Coote and the drama performances with Mrs Sampson, their passion within their subjects and lessons really shone through.

LIFE AFTER GORDON’S After Gordon’s I went on to study for my BTec National Diploma in Beauty Therapy at Guildford College. After I completed my course, I worked in a small local salon where I gained lots of experience and worked my way up to senior therapist.

I later went on to study teacher training at Greenwich University. I taught beauty therapy for 8 years at Guildford College.

Since leaving the teaching profession I have opened my own salon in Horsell. We opened in 2016 and have won many awards for best salon in Surrey, and best salon nationally.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS I opened Norsworthys Health and Beauty in 2016. It is a boutique salon based in Horsell offering Elemis Facials, massage, tanning, eye treatments and manicure and pedicures treatments. I have a small team of 3 beauty therapists. I love my job and the ladies I work with. We have such a friendly salon and I enjoy all aspects of owning and working in a salon.

WHAT ARE YOUR AIMS/GOALS FOR YOUR COMPANY? We are much more than a beauty salon; we are an integral part of a thriving local community providing a safe space for our clients, to enjoy some well-needed pampering and conversation away from the pressures of home and work. We host and attend a lot of charity work raising money for the local community. Eventually I would like to open more salons and a Norsworthys beauty training academy.

ADVICE TO YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF Keep doing your best. Take time to travel and experience new cultures and meet new people. Sometimes life gets hard, if your path demands you to walk through hell, walk as if you own the place!

WAYNE MUNDAY 8302 (1984) KHARTOUM

FONDEST MEMORIES Some of my favourite memories are probably unpublishable. After all, it was a very different era.

However, the moment that my housemaster (Mr P. Quigley) let me know that I would become the House Sergeant for Khartoum House was a special moment. Many of my housemates at the time now hold some very senior military ranks.

LIFE AFTER GORDON’S Since leaving in 1984 I went to university rather than the military. My degrees are in the earth sciences and I would win an advanced postgraduate scholarship to study in Bermuda. I would take this knowledge and thinking and join two geospatial international start-ups living and working across the UK, Europe and North American tech sectors. They would be sold for over a combined US$9 billion.

I worked in strategy for America Online before I founded a leading independent London based digital advertising sales agency in 2002 and sold it in 2010. Since then, I have been an advisor, university mentor and interim c-level in start-ups specialising in businesses looking to grow, pivot or turnaround.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS My current business is called Keystohn Limited. It is a venture builder which means it creates and invests in building new niche ventures. My current investment is a drinks brand dedicated to the Jurassic Coast. The inspiration for the business is a fossil ammonite that I excavated on a trip to the Isle of Wight when at university. Today it is a paperweight in my home office. I have plans to diversify the business and build publishing and marketing business units that are taking shape for 2024. I also want this venture to be a family affair so my son, wife and even my father are involved. My goal is to create a business I can pass on at some stage.

ADVICE TO YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF There are so many ways of answering this question. Firstly, I would tell my 1980s self to invent Google, reimagine the first Commodore 64 computer into an Apple Computer or re-think the Texas Instruments calculator into a Smart Phone. In reality, I would tell myself to find interesting subjects or activities to enjoy learning about; the greatest skill is to have the ability to continuously learn, research and process information; be curious; be confident in your beliefs; find like-minded people to be around, make use of university incubators and funding to explore your first start-up; never purely hunt the money consider social, environmental impact ventures; make time to enjoy life, family and your wellbeing – there is no harder job than starting ventures from scratch, and don’t forget about the people that helped you along the way, and always be humble.

CHRISTIAN ROWE MEMORIAL Christian Rowe 12318 (2018) 2002–2022 A Memorial Service was held at Guildford Cathedral on Friday 18th March attended by around 500 of his friends, family and colleagues. It was a beautiful sunny day. The majestic cathedral, filled with light and music, was the perfect setting in which to give thanks to God for the precious life of Christian. Members of his family, and several friends, gave moving tributes recalling his warmth of character, his natural charm, his great sense of fun, his emotional intelligence and kindness and his outstanding footballing talent. Along with prayers, hymns and Bible readings there were two beautiful musical items: Dorothea Flo sang “You Raise Me Up” and Gordon’s Semper Fidelis Singers sang “You Will Be Found.” A Gordon’s Piper gave a poignant rendition of “Flowers of the Forest” whilst walking slowly down the aisle. Amidst the undoubted and heartfelt sadness and tears, there was a profound sense of warmth and love for Christian and his family and, indeed, amongst all those present.

Christian’s funeral was held at Gordon’s Chapel on Thursday 17th February, another beautifully sunny day, attended by his close family and friends. Whilst many tears were shed there was a wonderful sense of calm and love amongst everyone present. Many lovely words about Christian were shared in tributes, and scripture verses, from the book of Ephesians, gave encouragement to our hope and trust in the love of God. Following a Swedish tradition, the Service ended with each person present laying a white rose on Christian’s casket, before leaving the Chapel.

Both services were led by the School Chaplain, the Revd Graham Wright.

Staff and students paid tribute to Christian Rowe on Tuesday 19th April by planting a memorial tree outside the new 3G pitch and taking each other on in a football match. The Old Boys ended up 7–5 winners in this new annual event.

We are very sad to share the news that Gordonian Michael Tuvey 6688 (1959) China, passed away on the 31st January this year.

It is with sadness that we share the news that Gordonian Thomas Probert 5508 (1946) passed away last November, he was 91.

Greg Smith We have been informed by his family that Greg passed away on the 30 January 2022.

Greg Smith taught piping off and on at Gordon’s School for around 25 years during the 1990s.

Ian Eddie 6240 (1952) We heard the sad news that Gordonian Ian Eddie 6240 (1952) passed away in January 2022.
