Experience and Extend God’s Goodness This summer my family and I had the privilege of visiting the Adirondack Region of New York, with stops at the La Vida Base Camp, Camp-of-theWoods, Deerfoot Lodge and Tapawingo.

We relished the chance to connect with so many members of the Gordon community while drinking in the expansive beauty that surrounded us. White-capped mountains, sparkling lakes, the call of loons, the hum of . . . mosquitos.

It’s really a special place, but it wasn’t always viewed that way. A few hundred years ago, as settlers were leaving their posts along the East Coast and moving westward, they bypassed the Adirondacks. Its cold climate and shallow soil were unattractive in comparison to the fertile land promised out west. But the very traits that were in opposition to the settlers’ thriving brought life to the hundreds of species of flourishing plants and wildlife that we still enjoy today.

At Gordon we’ve been talking quite a lot about thriving in the past several months. You likely saw that we introduced a rebrand in late April, including a new logo and “Learn to Thrive” tagline. (I’m thrilled to share

to thrive? Does it mean success? Does it mean amassing wealth or friends or accolades? Does it mean the opposite of just surviving?

When we think about thriving, we think about experiencing and extending the goodness of God in all aspects of life— and that’s going to look different for everyone. Look at Jeremiah 29. God’s people had been taken captive, dragged away to Babylon as their homes in Jerusalem were destroyed. In turn, they had started, understandably, to conspire about how they would overthrow their captors, escape and rebuild Jerusalem.

But God tells them instead to settle down. Plant gardens and eat their fruit.

Build homes, have families, raise up generations. Seek the peace and the prosperity of the city where you are.

This is what God wants for us: not just to survive and limp along, but to thrive where we are. Even in our own time of exile, of being an alien and a stranger in this world, he still wants us to thrive.

On pages 4 through 7 of this publication, you’ll hear what thriving means to several Gordon faculty and staff.

Wherever you find yourself—whether shallow soil or fertile land, a familiar home or a foreign place—my prayer is that you will experience and extend God’s goodness as you serve God and neighbor there.

We are the land of the living. It’s not a time or a place we need to wait for or find—we see and reflect the Lord’s goodness here and now.

The church is full of people like us, and God uses us to be beacons of hope in the world. This is what it means to thrive: to bring hope in the places we are least expected, to be fully invested in loving our neighbors and to be hospitality embodied.

Thriving is overflowing; it’s experiencing God’s goodness so fully that we can’t possibly keep it to ourselves.

Like the Icelandic thrush there are seasons when we might find ourselves quietly surviving. Frozen by the weight of our world’s challenges or perhaps wind-whipped by the grind of work or the responsibilities of parenting, we might endure, inconspicuous and unassuming, just waiting for the thaw. Our songs are quiet, our surroundings dark and cold.

But the world eventually ushers in new light and warmer days, and we start to see that punctuated between times of surviving can be magnificent seasons of thriving. Thriving isn’t synonymous with easy; after all, the Redwing’s seasons of thriving still involve avoiding Arctic foxes and beating the ice and wind. But these are times of peace, strength, exploration—when we can deeply experience God’s goodness in our relationships, our communities and our contributions at work and home. They are remarkable, melodious.

For the Redwing and for us, thriving is often preceded by periods of surviving. But how glorious when sounds of the whipping winter winds are replaced by complex harmonies, when a song is set free from silence.
