Jeff Zinn is heading into his fifth year as the head coach of the Penn State men’s tennis program. Zinn is 56-52 at Penn State and 442-310 in 26 years of coaching.

Last year, Zinn and the Nittany Lions went 15-15 overall and 5-6 in the Big Ten. Penn State made it to the first round of the 2015 Big Ten Tournament.

Penn State went 22-6 in spring 2014 and went 8-3 in the Big Ten. Both of those marks set new program records for wins. The Nittany Lions also set school records for wins against ranked opponents with 11 and road wins against ranked opponents with five.

Penn State finished in the ITA Top 25 for the first time in program history after entering the Top 25 for the first time in program history on March 25, 2014 and were ranked among the Top 25 for the final seven weeks, including a highest ranking of 16.

The Nittany Lions earned the sixth NCAA Tournament bid in program history in the 2013-14 season. They went to the Charlottesville Regional, where they defeated No. 50 UNC Wilmington, 4-2, in the First Round. In the second round, they fell 4-1 to No. 4 Virginia.

The Nittany Lions finished Zinn’s second year as head coach with an 8-17 record. Penn State faced 19 teams that were ranked at some point during the season, including three wins against ranked opponents. Penn State was ranked for two weeks, March 5-19, and reached as high as No. 69. It was Penn State’s first appearance in the ITA Poll since March 8, 2011.

In his first campaign, Penn State went 11-14, 1-10 in the Big Ten. The squad went 10-4 during non-conference play, highlighted by a 4-3 home victory over #63 Princeton.

In 2012, Jason Lee and Russell Bader put together one of the top doubles performances in program history, going 14-1 on the year and 6-0 against ranked opponents. The duo advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championships, where they were defeated by #10 Oklahoma’s doubles team. Bader and Lee finished the season ranked 28th in the final ITA Doubles Poll. Bader won a total of 24 doubles matches on the season, ranking third in program history for most doubles wins in a season.

Zinn came to Penn State after spending the 15 seasons with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Zinn’s career record speaks for itself, as he posted a superb 231-157 record while at Wake Forest, including a 78-62 record in the rugged Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Demon Deacons made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a streak of 11 consecutive seasons. Before Zinn’s arrival, Wake Forest had never made the NCAA Tournament.

Zinn is credited with pushing the Wake Forest team from a perennial top-75 squad to a top-25 team. He also transformed the Demon Deacons into a top tier club in the ACC and NCAA. Under Zinn’s guidance, Wake Forest finished among the top four in the

ACC seven times in his last 11 years there. The Deacons reached at least the semifinals of the ACC Championships for four straight years from 2007 to 2010, the longest such streak in the school’s rich tennis history.

In 2011, Wake Forest posted a 14-12 record under Zinn’s watch, notching his 11th straight winning season. He led the Demon Deacons to 10 wins against nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-0 win over No. 30 Wisconsin to open the season and a 4-0 victory against No. 46 Virginia Commonwalth in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

In 2008, Zinn led two players to the school’s first ever individual NCAA Championship as the duo claimed the NCAA’s Division I doubles title and became first team All-Americans. During Zinn’s 15 years at Wake, his players collected 23 All-ACC honors. The school had only 12 all-conference players in the 42 years prior to his arrival.

The 1984 Cincinnati graduate continued his head coaching career as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at ArkansasLittle Rock, where he was named the 1994 Sun Belt Coach of the Year and led Arkansas-Little Rock to the NCAA tournament in 1995 and 1996. He was also the 1992 Sun Belt Coach of the Year for his work with the Arkansas-Little Rock women’s team. He coached in Little Rock for six seasons, amassing a combined 133-88 record, including a 79-48 mark with the men.

Zinn’s collegiate coaching career began at Northern Kentucky where he coached for one year (1990). In just one season, he led Northern Kentucky to a conference championship, earning conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his season at Northern Kentucky, he spent seven years as the Director of Tennis at the West Side Racquet Club in Cincinnati.

An outstanding collegiate player himself, Zinn played number one singles and doubles at Eastern Kentucky and Cincinnati. Serving as the Bearcat captain, he was also named the team’s Most Valuable Player as both a junior and senior. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology in ‘84. Zinn then went on to earn his master’s degree in public administration from Arkansas-Little Rock in 1994 and worked as an adjunct professor in the sociology department. He is certified by both the USPTA and the USPTR.

Paul Tobin enters his third season as an Assistant Coach for Penn State. Tobin joined the Nittany Lions with eleven years of college coaching experience, including four seasons as the Head Men’s and Women’s Coach for Division I Saint Francis University.

Throughout his coaching carrer, Tobin has racked up 206 match wins.

Last year, Penn State assisted by Coach Tobin went 15-15 overall and 5-6 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions made it to the first round in the 2015 Big Ten Tournament.

During the 2014 season, Tobin helped the Penn State men’s tennis team complete a historic season. The Nittany Lions finished their season ranked 24th in the ITA Poll, with a mark of 22-6 overall and 8-3 in the Big Ten. Penn State was ranked in the Top 25 for the seven consecutive weeks and in the Top 75 for fourteen straight weeks. This was the first time in program history that the team won 20 wins in the spring. The Nittany Lions also went 15-0 at home.

The Nittany Lions received a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. They traveled to the Charlottesville Regional, where they knocked off No. 50 UNC Wilmington, 4-2, in the first round. Penn State advanced to the second round against No. 4 Virginia. The Nittany Lions won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2.

Tobin was instrumental in the development of several key players. Sophomore Leonard Stakhovsky ended the season ranked 37th in the ITA Poll with a record of 18-8 with eight wins against ranked opponents in 2014. Stakhovsky received the Big Ten Player of the Week Award three times and was an unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection. Stakhovsky was also selected for the NCAA Singles Championships, where he played Vanderbilt’s Gonzales Austin in the first round during the 2014 tournament.

During the 2013 fall season at Penn State, Tobin helped the Nittany Lions achieve an unprecedented 77 individual singles match wins with duel wins over Indiana, Navy, Princeton, William & Mary, and Old Dominion. Tobin was instrumental in Penn State’s 4-3 win over #28 ranked Harvard, coaching Matt Barry to a three-set win over Harvard Andrew Ball.

Prior to Penn State, Tobin successfully turned around the Division I Saint Francis University Men’s and Women’s programs into top teams in the Northeast Conference. In Tobin’s four years at SFU, the Red Flash compiled 76 match wins, 798 individual wins in singles and doubles, and both squads to reached three quarterfinal and two semifinal Northeast Conference appearances.

The Red Flash women’s team ended the 2013 season with a 13-5 record, setting the school mark for winning percentage (72.3) and matching the program mark for wins in a season and advanced to its first semifinal appearance in program history. The 6

SFU men’s team earned an 11-8 mark, its best dual match record since 2000-01.

During Tobin’s tenure at SFU, his players held stellar academic records with an overall GPA of 3.4. Twelve members of his squad made Honor Roll. In 2011, the men’s tennis program was recognized by the NCAA for its high academic achievement, posting an APR score among the Top 10% in men’s tennis. While at Saint Francis, he helped in raising over $12,000 for cancer research. In Feb of 2012, Coach Tobin was honored at an award ceremony hosted by the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Center for his generous contribution and support.

Prior to Saint Francis, Tobin was the assistant coach for the 9th ranked men’s and 19th ranked women’s tennis teams at Division II Georgia College & State University. During his three seasons there, Coach Tobin helped the men’s team compile a 51-18 record while the women went 42-19. The Bobcats also made NCAA Regional appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2011, winning the Peach Belt Conference in 2009, the first in program history. Tobin was instrumental in developing five All-American singles players and two All-American doubles teams.

Tobin is also the developer of SlingHopper Drill Bags - a worldwide tennis-teaching product.

As a collegiate player, Tobin competed at the Division 1 level for top NEC ranked Quinnipiac University and the University of Maryland. Tobin, who was named captain, played #1 singles and doubles for the Bobcats. Tobin made two NCAA singles appearances.

A Long Island, N.Y. native, Tobin received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a Master’s degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching from Concordia University. He currently lives in Hollidaysburg, PA with his wife and three children, Alea, Zachary and William.

2013-14 Season (Junior): Hanzlik did not see any action in the spring due to injury… Hanzlik went 5-5 in singles and 3-1 in doubles this fall…Hanzlik competed at the ITA All-American Championships and Wake Forest Invite… At the ITA All-American Championships, Hanzlik won four straight matches to advance out of the pre-qualifying draw to the qualifying round. He knocked off Murray State’s Adam Taylor(6-4, 6-2), Purdue’s Szymon Tatarczuk(4-6, 6-2, 6-3), UTSA’s Yannick Junger(6-4, 6-4) and UC Irvine’s Tyler Pham(6-1, 6-3) on his way to the qualifying round.

He fell to Virginia’s Justin Shane in the qualifying round. Defeated Stetson’s Simon Julin(6-4, 6-2) at the Wake Forest Invite… Combined with Marc Collado Castells to go 3-1 at the Wake Forest Invite, winning 3rd place in their draw. They defeated teams from UNC Charlotte(8-7(4)), East Carolina(8-7) and Furman(8-2).

2012-13 Season (Sophomore): Hanzlik went 18-17 overall and 13-12 in duals during his sophomore year, while competing in the top three singles spots... Also won six doubles matches while pairing with six different partners... Won five singles matches in the fall, highlighted by reaching the final at the Ranked+1 Invitational. On his way to the final, Hanzlik knocked off Memphis’ David O’Hare(6-2, 6-0), NC State’s Sean Weber(2-6, 6-4, 6-2), and Ole Miss’ William Kallberg(0-6, 6-4, 6-4). Kallberg was ranked 75th in the ITA Preseason Poll. In the final, Hanzlik fell to Virginia’s Alex Domijian, ranked #2 in the preseason poll... Also earned wins at the ITA Atlantic Regional against St. Joseph’s Alex Veronis(6-4, 6-0) and at the USTA Clay Court Invitational against Florida’s Gordon Watson(6-2, 2-6, 10-1)... Hanzlik combined with Bryan Welnetz for an 8-0 win against UNC’s Andrew Gores and Stuart DePaolo at the Ranked+1 Invitational. The duo also picked up two wins at the ITA Atlantic Regional against St. Joseph’s Max Montague and Andres Urrea(8-1) and UMBC’s Alex Drean and Juan Manual Aranzazu(8-2)... Began the non-conference slate with four straight wins, knocking off NC State’s Dave Thomason(6-3, 2-6, 6-3), #69 Cornell’s Alex Sidney(4-6, 6-4, 6-2), Cleveland State’s Joe VanMeter(6-2, 6-2), and #39 New Mexico’s Jadon Phillips(6-4, 2-6, 6-2)... Won nine matches during non-conference play... Claimed Big Ten victories against Iowa’s Garrett Dunn(6-1, 6-3), #57 Nebraska’s Andre Stenger(6-2, 7-5), Wisconsin’s Alexander Kostanov(7-5, 6-1), and #34 Northwestern’s Raleigh Smith(3-6, 7-6(8), 1-0(11-9))... Hanzlik and Welnetz paired up for an 8-5 doubles win against Cleveland State. Combined with Roman Trkulja for doubles wins against Penn and Lehigh.

2011-12 Season (Freshman): Hanzlik had an outstanding freshman campaign, posting a 12-11 spring singles record, including 2-3 against nationally ranked opponents, while also going 4-8 in spring doubles matches… Went 8-4 in singles and 2-6 in doubles during the fall… Opened the fall season with a 4-0 singles performance at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational … Hanzlik followed that performance with a 3-1 effort at the UVa Fall Classic and combined with Jason Lee to also go 2-1 in doubles… Hanzlik defeated William & Mary’s John Banks 6-2, 7-6(2-0) at the ITA Regional Championships before falling to Virginia Tech’s Lucas Oliveira… At the Big Ten Indoor Championships, Hanzlik defeated Iowa’s Marc Bruche, ranked no. 101, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6… Hanzlik entered the spring season ranked number 80… Went 8-4 in singles against non-conference opponents, including wins in seven of the first eight matchups. The stretch included a win against #63 Princeton’s Matt Spindler(6-3, 6-7(2-7), 6-1). Also went 3-1 in doubles, with wins against St. Bonaventure, Bloomsburg, and Bucknell… Played in the two or three spot for non-conference, but worked up to number one spot for most of conference play…

Won four straight matchups in Big Ten play against Iowa, #70 Nebraska, #47 Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Streak was highlighted by 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win against Nebraska’s Christopher Aumeller, ranked #79 in the nation. Highlight of Big Ten doubles play was combining with Taylor Cohen for an 8-6 win over #46 Northwestern’s Sidarth Balaji and Tobias Reitz. Dropped tough doubles matchups against #47 Minnesota, #23 Illinois, and #21 Michigan.

In 2014, Galush was runner-up in doubles when competing in the Boy’s 16s National Championship. Galush entered Penn State as a top-75 recruit in the country.

SARNI TENNIS CENTER The Penn State tennis facilities are first-rate. In addition to the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center which houses four Decoturf courts, a state-of-the-art outdoor facility opened in September of 1998. The second-to-none facility was named the USTA Outstanding Tennis Facility Award in 1999, just one year after its opening.

The Sarni Tennis Center is a $2.3 million facility that features seven lighted Plexi-cushion courts including a stadium court with seating for 1,000 fans; a team clubhouse with locker rooms, meeting and video rooms; and a racket stringing area. Plans are underway to purchase a major scoreboard to enhance the facility.

The addition of this wonderful factility now means that Penn State can enter bids to host major collegiates championships.

State-of-the-art stadium lighting also allows for the Nittany Lions to schedule evening matches, host large tournaments and build a sense of excitement about Penn State tennis going into the future.

Vincent and Sandra Sarni got the ball rolling for the facility with their gift of $675,000. Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries, and his wife are tennis enthusiasts.

Neither of the Sarni’s is a Penn State graduate, although they have been supporters of academic and athletic programs at the University and both have had children attend Penn State.

In addition to the gift from the Sarni family, approximately $500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will also provide for student use of the facility.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY 1997

NCAA Region I at Harvard, No. 5 seed May 9 vs. No. 4 Virginia Tech L, 4-2

The Nittany Lions earned their first NCAA Tournament berth in 1997 with a mark of 12-9 in the regular season and five Big Ten wins.

They were selected as a No. 5 seed in the regional hosted by Harvard. However, the Nittany Lions dropped a 4-2 decision to the No. 4 seed Virginia Tech. Michael Carter led the Nittany Lions with 29 singles wins that year and was an All-Big Ten honoree.

1998

NCAA Region I at Princeton, No. 5 seed May 15 vs. No. 4 Columbia W, 4-1 May 16 vs. No. 1 Harvard L, 4-0

Penn State made it back to the NCAA Tournament the following year, entering the tournament with 11 wins. The Nittany Lions earned the first tournament win in program history, knocking off Columbia, 4-1, in the first round of the regional hosted by Princeton. In the second round, Penn State fell to top seed, Harvard, 4-0.

2006

NCAA Regionals at VCU, No. 3 seed May 12 vs. No. 2 Washington L, 4-2

The Nittany Lions returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, being selected as the No. 3 seed in the VCU regional. Penn State entered the tournament ranked 45th in the FILA Poll with a record of 17-6 and won five Big Ten matches. However, they dropped their first round match, 4-2, against Washington. Penn State won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Washington took a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Adam Slagter earned a win at No. 4 singles to tie it back up at 2-2, but the Huskies clinched the match with three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6.

2007

NCAA First and Second Round at USC May 11 vs. No. 20 Pepperdine L, 4-1

Penn State earned their second straight NCAA Tournament bid in 2007 with a record of 16-6, including six conference wins. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 42 in the nation entering the tournament and battled Pepperdine, the defending national champion, in the first round. The Waves took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Penn State’s Michael James earned a 7-5, 6-4 win against Pepperdine’s Andre Begemann at No. 1 singles, but the Wave claimed wins at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

2008

NCAA First and Second Round at Virginia May 10 vs. VCU W, 4-0 May 11 vs. Virginia L, 4-0

The Blue and White were selected for the NCAA Tournament again in 2008. Penn State, ranked 39th in the ITA Poll, entered the tournament with a 16-11 record and six Big Ten wins. They also had eight wins that year against ranked opponents. In the first round, they took on VCU, ranked 27th. Penn State won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3, led by their 32nd-ranked doubles pair of Michael James and Brendan Lynch at the top spot. James then set the tone in singles with his victory at No. 1. The Nittany Lions also got wins at No. 2 and No. 4 to advance to the second round. In the next round, they matched up against No. 1 Virginia.

The Cavaliers took the doubles point, including a win by their top-ranked doubles team. Virginia claimed singles wins at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the match.

2014

NCAA First and Second Round at Virginia May 10 vs. UNC Wilmington W, 4-2 May 11 vs. No. 4 Virginia L, 4-1

Penn State earned their sixth bid in program history, traveling back to the Charlottesville Regional, hosted by the University of Virginia.

The Nittany Lions, entered the regional after winning a program-record 21 matches during the regular season, including eight Big Ten wins and 10 against ranked opponents. In the first round, Penn State, ranked 23rd in the nation, took on UNC Wilmington, ranked 50th. The Nittany Lions earned a 4-2 victory. Penn State dropped the doubles point, but picked up singles wins at the top four positions. At the top singles spot, Leonard Stakhovsky was trailing 5-4 in the third set, but rallied back to win the set and clinch the match point. Penn State advanced to the second round, where they met No. 4 Virginia. The Nittany Lions took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, with Michael Reilly and Chris Young clinching the point at No. 2. However, Virginia responded with singles wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5.
