Glon 31st year at Penn State

Now entering his 31st season with the Nittany and Lady Lions, Head Coach Wieslaw (Wes) R. Glon, joined the Penn State fencing program as an assistant coach in 1985. Since being on staff, Glon has been an integral part of Penn State’s fencing achievements, which include thirteen combined Men’s and Women’s NCAA Championships and nine second place finishes.

Glon took the reins as Interim Head Coach in August 2013 and quickly set about the task of leading Penn State to its 13th NCAA Championship, an NCAA record. Glon led the Nittany Lion men’s team to a 22-3 overall record while the women compiled a 16-10 mark. He then led Penn State to the NCAA title as eight Nittany Lion fencers earned All-America honors, including then-sophomore Kaito Streets, who won the NCAA men’s sabre individual title. Glon was named 2014 Coach of the Year at Penn State and 2014 Coach of the Year by the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) for his efforts. He was permanently appointed to the Head Coach position in July 2014.

At the time, Glon said: “It is an honor to be named the head coach of the most successful fencing program in the country.

I will strive to continue the tradition of success and integrity that the Penn State fencing program is known for nationally.

I look forward to the challenges ahead and to the opportunity to continue Penn State’s legacy of success.”

HEAD COACH WES GLON

have included track and field, soccer, physical therapy and sports medicine. From 1977-81, Glon was assistant professor of physical education at the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. He left Poland in 1981, and for two years lived in Vienna, Austria where he assisted with coaching the Austrian National Team. He immigrated to the United States in 1983 and served two years as the assistant men’s coach at William & Mary College where he worked with the saber team. Since immigrating to the U.S., he has become very active in the fencing community. He is the founder of three fencing clubs in Richmond,Va and in the State College, Pa area. He is also the founder of the Central Pa Fencing Scholastic League with a number of elementary and middle school programs.

Coach Glon is one of the top fencing officials in the world in all three weapons. He is involved with the United States Fencing Association and has served for the last four years on its Board of Directors as Elite Coach Director. Glon is also on the Collegiate Mid-Atlantic / South Regional Fencing Committee, which he has chaired in the past.

Fencing Master Glon has coached many U.S. national teams, including teams for the Junior and Senior World Championships (1989-1998), the Pan American Games (1991), and the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. In recent years, Wes Glon has been involved with the U.S. National Team in different capacities: as Coach, Team Captain and Chef de Mission.

Over the years, many of his athletes have represented the U.S. on the international arena and have won top honors in their respective weapons. In 2013, he was named Team Captain for both the Men’s and Women’s National Teams and has lead them to be a dominating power house in the fencing world.

Glon is married and has two daughters. One of his daughters, Nicole, was the women’s captain on the 2014 Nittany Lions fencing team and helped lead Penn State to the NCAA crown.

In 2015, Glon led the men’s team to a 17-5 record while the women ended their season with a 15-8 mark. At the NCAA championship, the team finished in second place, with seven Nittany Lion fencers earning All-America honors. True freshman Andrew Mackiewicz became the newest NCAA men’s sabre individual champion.

A native of Poland, Glon was a very accomplished fencer on the Polish National Team, representing his country at many international competitions. He won Poland’s highest fencing honors in sabre six times, between 1975 and 1981, and was bronze medalist at the 1979 World University Games in Mexico City.

Glon earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in physical education from the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. In addition to fencing, his academic interests

Abashidze

Coach George “Gia” Abashidze is returning for his seventh year as assistant coach and brings a long list of collegiate and international coaching experience with him.

A former member of the USSR’s National Foil Team, Abashidze’s team competed in numerous international tournaments, with Abashidze winning his nation’s foil crown.

Before coming to the United States, Abashidze coached the Georgian National Team.

Abashidze came to the United States and coached club fencing in Portland, Ore. before taking an assistant coaching position at Ohio State. While in Columbus, Abashidze helped Ohio State’s foilists win five NCAA individual titles.

Among his athletes are Monique DeBruin, David Willette, Olympian Daniel Gomez and Individual World Champion Miles Chamley-Watson. Abashidze also coached 2008 Olympians Hanna Thompson and Doris Willette, who won the team foil Silver Medal.

Abashidze and his wife, Ia, have three children (Guram,who fenced at Penn State; Anna and Sophia). The Abashidzes reside in State College.

Sintchinov

Coach Sintchinov is joining the Nittany Lions for his second year as assistant coach. Sintchinov has an extensive fencing resume and has been a professional coach since 1976. He also has the recognition of being a Master of Sport in Fencing.

During his international coaching tenure, Sintchinov was the head coach of the Belarus, Egypt and Tunisia National Teams. In 1991, Sintchinov was named Honored Coach of Belarus for his time with the team. He also served as the head coach of the 2000 Egypt Olympic Team.

Sintchinov was a sought-after private and club coach from 20042011 before making the move into collegiate coaching, joining the Ohio State Staff in 2011. Sintchinov spent three years in Columbus as an assistant coach, helping guide the program to the 2012 NCAA Championships. Sintchinov studied at the Belarussian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport, specializing in coaching and teaching.

Hall

Johanna Picard Hall is in her third season as assistant coach. A native of France, Hall received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Penn State. She fenced foil for the Nittany Lions from 1984 to 1988 and was team captain her junior and senior years.

While on the team, she compiled a 160-37 record, finishing her career with an 81% winning percentage. Her senior year, she placed 4th at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals and 19th at the NCAA Championships.

In addition to coaching, Hall assists Head Coach Glon with the administrative duties of the team and focuses her efforts on compliance, recruiting, alumni relations and community outreach.

Hall and her husband, Ken, have three sons and one daughter.

They live in Boalsburg, PA. 6

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2014-15: Radanovich started out her second season as a Nittany Lion strong, with five of her first six contests ending in undefeated wins. Radanovich continued to find success throughout the season, tallying up 12 undefeated duels. Radanovich finished the season with a record of 45-8, which qualified her for the 2015 NCAA Championships. Radanovich competed hard in the championships and secured 5th place in the women’s epee event.

Radanovich was a 2015 All-American.

2014 Men’s Sabre NCAA National Champion

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2013-14: Radanovich had a stellar first year as a Nittany Lion. She was a stand-out fencer on the team besides the fact that it was her freshman year. She went 51-24 in the regular season and went undefeated in 10 of her duals. She qualified to compete at Regionals finishing 4th and qualified herself for NCAA National Championships. At the Championships, she went on to the final four where she ultimately finished tied for 3rd.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2013-14: Streets had yet another impressive campaign as a Nittany Lion. Streets finished the regular season with a record of 32-13. At the Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals, Streets finished 6th which qualified him for a spot to compete at the championship. At the 2014 NCAA Championship, Streets dominated, secured 1st place, and became the 2014 NCAA Men’s Saber Champion.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Jessie Radanovich previously fenced for FFA and LAIFC club teams under head coaches Vladamir Ostatnigrosh and Gago Demirchian. Radanovich is currently a kinesiology major at Penn State. Radanovich chose Penn State for its great fencing program.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2012-13: Streets had an extremely impressive freshman campaign, and proved to be one of the strongest members on the men’s saber team. His 43-19 regular season record qualified him for the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, where he finished in eighth place. The freshman had seven 3-0 performances throughout the season against NYU, Sacred Heart, Vassar, Columbia (twice), Notre Dame, and Wayne State. In February, he qualified to be a member on the 2013 United States Junior World Championship Team.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2014-15: Streets continued to find success in his third season as a Nittany Lion. Streets saw a lot of collegiate fencing action, tallying 26 wins and 20 losses. Streets went on to the NCAA Championships and ended the season with a sixth place finish nationally. Streets was named All-American for the second year in a row.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Katio Streets comes to Penn State from Redwood City, California. He participated in club level fencing at Hristov-Csikany fencers in Sacramento, Califonia.

Throughout the season O’Neill-Lyublinsky tallied nine shutout performances and celebrated an eight match win streak.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2013-14: O’Neill-Lyublinsky saw plenty of action in her sophomore year. She went 48-27 in the regular season. Her hard work qualified her Regionals where she placed 7th.

She went on to compete at the NCAA National Championships where she placed 13th overall.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2012-13: Due to injury, O’Neill-Lyublinsky was only able to compete in the first dual meet of the season.

The freshman had a record of 10-4, and had two 3-0 performances against Sacred Heart and Vassar. She also had a 2-0 record against NYU. O’Neill-Lyublinsky placed fourth at her first Garret Open.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Jessica O’Neill-Lyubinsky is from North Salem, New York. She participated in club fencing at the Fencing Academy of West Chester. O’Neill-Lyubinsky intends on majoring in psychology or pre-med.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2013-14: In her second year as a Nittany Lion, Stanley went 13-13 in the regular season. She had two 3-0 performances against Detroit and Cleveland Universities.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2012-13: Stanley saw lots of action during her first year as a Nittany Lion, and finished the regular season with a record of 17-41. She competed in the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional and finished in 35th place. The freshman had four shutout performances during the season.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Rebecca Stanley comes to Penn State from Willis, Texas. She participated in club fencing with the Woodlands Fencing Academy. Stanley intends on majoring in international politics.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Alissa Hofmann, a native of Cambridge, Mass., joins the Penn State fencing team looking to win another NCAA Championship. Hofmann is pursuing a degree in biology and is looking to do research in her field upon graduation.

Outside of fencing, Hofmann enjoys reading, fashion and hiking.

first year at Penn State and finished with a record of 6-16. Higson recorded a shutout performance against Vassar in her first match as a Nittany Lion.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2014-15: Luminet had another successful season with the Nittany Lions in 2014-15, ending the season with a winning record of 32-17. During the season, Luminet recorded five 3-0 performances against Harvard, NYU, UPenn, and St. John’s.

Capping off a great junior season, Luminet advanced to the NCAA finals, where she finished in sixth place on foil. Luminet’s stellar performance at the NCAA Championship also secured her third All-American status.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: A State College native, Julia Higson chose Penn State because of its atmosphere and the fencing program. Higson is pursuing concurrent majors in anthropology and geography with a minor in Japanese. Higson previously fenced at Central PA Fencing Association under current head coach Wes Glon.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2013-14: In her second year as a Nittany Lion, Luminet saw plenty of action. The now two-time All-American finished her regular season 35-16. At Regionals, Luminet placed third qualifying her to compete at the NCAA Championships. At the championship, she went on to finish 7th.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2012-13: Luminet had an outstanding freshman year, which earned her an All-American status. The France native placed second at the Regional to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships. At the championships, she won 15 of her bouts to place seventh. Luminet finished the regular season with a record of 40-14. She had seven 3-0 performances that came against NYU, Harvard, UNC, Temple, St. John’s, Duke, and Wayne State. The freshman also placed fifth at the Garret Open.

Prior to joining the Nittany Lions, Vigna competed with the Fencing Academy of Westchester under the direction of personal coach Alex Zurabishvili. Vigna earned a silver medal at the 2015 Junior Olympics for her performance on epee.

Vigna chose Penn State for its excellence in academics and athletics.

Kaplan fenced for the East Lyme High School fencing team for four years, leading the Vikings to fourth place in the state championship as a senior captain. Kaplan also fenced for the Thames River Fencing Club under the direction of head coaches David Ghilchrist and Keith Knight. Kaplan is majorig in journalism and hopes one day to become a magazine editor.

All-American 2015 2015 Men’s Sabre NCAA National Champion AS A FRESHMAN IN 2014-15: Mackiewicz was a force to be reckoned with his first season as a Nittany Lion. In just his first three starts, Mackiewicz went 3-0. By the end of the season, Mackiewicz would tally nine total shutout performances. Mackiewicz ended the regular season with a stellar 32-8 record, propelling him into the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals. Mackiewicz placed first at Regionals, qualifying him for the NCAA Championships. At the Championships, Mackiewicz was virtually unstoppable, taking home first place and securing the title of 2015 NCAA Men’s Sabre Champion.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Andrew Mackiewicz comes to Penn State from Westwood, Mass. He previously fenced for Zeta Fencing Club under head coach Zoran Tulum. Mackiewicz is majoring in marketing.

JUNIOR IN 2014-15: Lewicki’s junior season at Penn State was a successful one. Lewicki finished the season with a winning record of 21-17 in regular season play. Lewicki recorded five shutout duels in 2014-15, against Vassar, UPenn, UNC, St. John’s and Stevens.

Lewicki competed in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals and finished in 12th place.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2013-14: Lewicki had an impressive year with the Nittany Lions. In his first full year on the team, Lewicki went 32-15 during regular season action. Lewicki went undefeated in dual action against Vassar, Drew, Columbia, WSU, OSU, Detroit, Cleveland, and Princeton. This qualified Lewicki for the Mid-Atlantic/Southern Regionals.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2012-13: Lewicki joined the Nittany Lions in the second half of the season, and did not see any collegiate action. However, he finished in third place in the Junior Olympics that were held in Baltimore in February.
