2010-11 Section Season heading Outlook Right 2010-11 Outlook Returning Players: After its eighth consecutive winning season (15-11, 3-7), Penn State will enter the 201011 season looking to earn its fourth NCAA Tournament bid in the last six years. Senior captain and reigning All-Big Ten player Eddie Bourchier will lead the way for Penn State. The Nittany Lions will look to bring back their success with seven returning players and the addition of two talented freshmen to this year’s roster.

some good experience last year. Hopefully he will continue to develop and help us out this spring.” Sophomores: Leading the sophomore class for the Nittany Lions is Bryan Welnetz. The Texas native was second on the team in total singles victories (21) and led the team in dual match singles victories (17). Doebler expects Welnetz to Chris Hasyn

Bryan Welnetz

Seniors: This season, head coach Todd Doebler returns one senior in Bourchier, who is coming off a career season. Bourchier went 22-10 and will be the Lions’ No. 1 position player for a second consecutive season. “Eddie did a great job for us last year and really became a good No. 1 player,” said Doebler. “He was rewarded for his efforts by being named All-Big Ten. Eddie has already started this fall by going 8-2 in singles and 6-1 in doubles. That should give him a lot of momentum going into the spring. His experiences at the All-American Championships this fall should also hemp him Eddie Bourchier

“Bryan started his career off well last year,” said Doebler. “Since last year, his game has just jumped to a whole new level. He’s really improved since last year. It’s looking like he’s going to have a breakout sophomore year. He’s improved his backhand a lot and he loves competing. We think he’s really going to blossom into a great player.” Chris Hasyn enters his third season with the Nittany Lions after redshirting last season. “Chris is coming off a redshirt year and worked really hard on his forehand and improving his game,” said Doebler. “He is an excellent double player, so hopefully he can find his way into the doubles lineup. With his hard work and dedication to his game, he will hopefully continue to develop.”

heading into this year.” Juniors: Doebler returns two players from the junior class, including Jason Lee and Taylor Cohen. Lee finished the season last year with 17 total singles wins. In his first season with the team after transferring from Clemson, Cohen went 11-8 in singles and 11-10 in dual match doubles. “Jason is coming off a tough sophomore year,” said Doebler. “He seems to have rebounded very well and has recommitted himself to playing at the level he is capable of. He is working really hard on the court this year. His level of play keeps improving. He should be Jason Lee

Rounding out the sophomore class is Guanhua Chen and C.J. Griffin. The two saw limited action during their freshmen seasons, but will look to have a more expanded role during the 2010-11 season. “Chen is coming off a year where he wasn’t able to crack the lineup,” said Doebler. “He worked really hard over the summer and seems to have improved his consistency and overall level of play. As he continues to work hard and Guanhua Chen

able to have a really good year for us.” “Taylor is coming off a year where he was in and out of the lineup,” said Doebler. “He got

“C.J. came back this summer in much better shape and seemed to have learned a lot from last year’s experience and training with a lot of good players,” said Doebler. “C.J.’s game is right at the point where he is about ready to break through. He is very talented so hopefully

it will happen soon. He is a guy that can definitely help us in singles and doubles.” Freshmen: Doebler added two freshmen to this year’s squad, arguably one of his best recruiting classes in his five years at Penn State. Joining the Nittany Lions will be Russell Bader and Harry Seaborn. “Russell came in after a really good summer and junior career where he made the quarterfinals of the U.S National Clay Court Championship,” said Doebler. “He is really starting to develop into a better player. He is working really hard and we feel he is going to be a guy that helps us in singles and doubles and make big contributions to the team.” “Seaborn as a freshman has transitioned well to all the training on and off the court,” said Doebler. “He is al big, strong guy that has a lot of upside. As he continues to develop, he is a guy that can make contributions to the Russell Bader

team.” Big Ten Forecast: After going 6-4 in consecutive seasons two years ago, the Nittany Lions dropped their Big Ten record to 3-7 in 2010, which featured a very difficult conference schedule. Doebler hopes the squad can build on what happened last year. “As always, the Big Ten keeps on getting better every year,” said Doebler. “We’ve got a bunch of teams that finished high in the national rankings and it’s really a solid conference now. There are no easy matches. Our expectation is that we’re going to work incredibly hard for the rest of this fall and work hard through the spring. When we put ourselves in positions to capitalize on opportunities, it will be important that we are able to do that.” Doebler’s Expectations: “We realize we have a young team. We feel that last year we had a lot of opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on in numerous matches. Had we been able to do that, the year probably would’ve been much different. That being said, a lot of these guys got some experience last year and it will probably make them very hungry this year to have an improved season. It’s tough to say in terms of wins and losses, but our overall goal is always to get in the NCAA Tournament. Then we’ll see what we can do from there.”

MEN’S TENNIS

A native of Hatfield, Pa., Doebler brought a wealth of coaching experience to Happy Valley in 2006. Doebler, who was named the 2004 and 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year, came to Penn State after four years as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. He was named associate head coach prior to the 2005-06 season. While in South Bend, Doebler helped the Irish move into the elite ranks of men's intercollegiate tennis. In his final year at Notre Dame, Doebler helped the Irish finish No. 17 in the ITA poll, defeat 14 ranked teams and advance to the Big East Conference Championship final. Doebler also helped develop the talent of Sheeva Parbhu, who was an ITA All-American and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship. Doebler served as recruiting coordinator, as well as a liaison to the strength and conditioning coaches while at Notre Dame. Prior to his stint with the Irish, he was an assistant at Pepperdine University in 2001 and 2002, helping the Waves achieve national prominence both years. During his time at Pepperdine, the Waves compiled a 43-14 (.754) mark. In 2001, the Waves won the West Coast Conference title, advanced to the NCAA round of 16 and finished 18th in the nation. e following year, Pepperdine was 256, reached the NCAA quarterfinals and finished No. 5 in the polls. Head Coach Todd Doebler WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT TODD DOEBLER

Prior to his time at Pepperdine, Doebler served as head coach at Connecticut College for men's and women's tennis, as well as men's and women's squash for two years. Doebler began his coaching career at Trinity (Conn.) College in 1997 where he served as an assistant for one year for one of the top-ranked Division III tennis programs in the nation.

"I will never be able to adequately express how much Todd meant to our team. His enthusiasm, positiveness and dedication were infectious. Much of the credit for our team's No. 6 national ranking in 2007 should go to him for the countless early morning individual workouts he had with so many of our players. He is going to do some great things at Penn State." Bob Bayliss Notre Dame Head Coach

In addition to his collegiate experience, Doebler served as an assistant coach to the World Team Tennis' Hartford Foxforce in the summer of 2000, which featured players such as Monica Seles, James Blake and Murphy Jensen. His responsibilities included oncourt coaching, conducting promotional clinics and pro-ams and overseeing community involvement. Doebler also came to Penn State with experience as a teaching professional. He served as the head tennis professional at Lehigh Country Club in Lehigh, Pa., during the summers of 1993 and 1994 and as the assistant tennis pro at the Farmington Field Club in Connecticut in the summers of 1997 and 1998. “College tennis is finding out just how good Todd Doebler is. It was no accident that Pepperdine and Notre Dame had some of their best years when he was the assistant at those schools. Todd combines a great passion, knowledge and a tireless work ethic to make an outstanding college coach. Penn State is in for some new highs for the men's tennis program!” Peter Smith USC Head Coach

A 1996 graduate of Bloomsburg University, with a degree in psychology, Doebler also excelled on the court during his playing career. He won the conference doubles and team championships in 1994, as well as the conference singles, doubles and team championship titles in 1995. Sarni Tennis Center

Sarni Tennis Center The Penn State tennis facilities are first-rate. In addition to the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center which houses four Decoturf courts, a state-of-the-art outdoor facility opened in September of 1998. The second-tonone facility was named the facility of the year just a year after its completion. The Sarni Tennis Center is a $2.3 million facility that features seven lighted Plexicushion courts including a stadium court with seating for 1,000 fans, a team clubhouse with locker r o o m s , meeting and video rooms and a racket stringing area.

Plans are underway to purchase a major scoreboard to enhance the facility. Vincent and Sandra Sarni got the ball rolling for the facility with their gift of $675,000. Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries, and his wife are tennis enthusiasts. Neither of the Sarni is a Penn State graduate, although they have been supporters of academic and athletic programs at the University and both have had children attend Penn State. In addition to the gift from the Sarni family, approximately $500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will also provide for student use of the facility.
