- How is sexed semen affecting the beef cattle industry?

- The age of the average American farmer has been rising for decades. Where will the beef producers of the future come from?

SENIOR DIVISIONS WILL DRAW FROM A POOL OF 8 TOPICS AND CHOOSE ONE TO PREPARE IN AN EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH (3-7 MINUTES LONG). PREP TIME IS 30 MINUTES.

- Reading materials will be provided for preparation. If a Beginner or Junior has not prepared a speech ahead of time they can utilize the extemporaneous topic process.

SALES TALK:

This contest requires the contestant to use their sales technique to sell their animal to a judge.

NEW THIS YEAR: It is optional for contestants to bring their animal to the ring during sales talk, but they must have an older SDJSA member to hold their animal during their sales talk presentation. Otherwise, bring a printed photo or picture/video on your phone or iPad of the animal you want to sell. Registration papers must be presented to the judge. A contestant may also bring updated BOLT EPDs and planned matings from Herdbook for the animal being sold.

There are limitations to what can be brought into the contests- no business cards, sale catalogs, additional photos or registration papers, any items displaying ranch /farm logo are prohibited. Any contestant bringing these items will receive a 50% point deduction.

Remember to be creative! Some juniors sell the heifer, others sell the end product of a steer, others sell embryos or semen.

Any Simmental animal is allowed- it doesn’t have to be the animal you are showing this year!

JUDGING CONTEST:

The judging contest will be available for any junior ages 8-21 exhibiting at the SD Summer Spotlight. Contestants MUST REGISTER on Thursday, July 24th from 6-8pm during Cattle Check-In at the DEX. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED FRIDAY MORNING! The cost will be $20 to register for the judging contest, with proceeds serving as a fundraiser for the SD Junior Simmental Association. Age divisions will follow SD Summer Spotlight Divisions - Beginner (ages 8-10), Junior (ages 11-13) and Senior (ages 14-21) as of January 1st, 2025.

The contest will be held on Friday, July 25th at 7:45am in the Cattle Ring of the DEX. Contestants will judge six classes (compiled of cattle, sheep, hogs + goats) and complete two sets of questions on classes. Classes will be compiled by a species representative. Official placings for this contest will be compiled by a panel of three to five members. The officials will write the questions and put placings and cuts on the classes. Contestants will complete a scantron during the contest which will provide their score. The contest will be sanctioned by the SDSU Livestock Judging Series and all questions will be handled within the parameters of the Judging Series.

SHOWMANSHIP:

We will follow the Spotlight age divisions. Please note that in order to be eligible for the Showmanship buckle and be a member of the Simmental Fitting Team at the State Fair, you must compete in three of the four contests. For Seniors, this will include being eligible to be the Simmental Representative for the U-Fit-It contest. Showmanship points will be awarded for the top 5 individuals in each age division that will count towards overall winners.
